New Buccaneer Says He Was Unwanted

March 10th, 2017

New Bucs DT/DE Chris Baker speaks out

Say what you want about the train wreck Redskins, but you can’t ignore they’ve had back-to-back winning seasons after hiring the right head coach in 2014 — when the Bucs hired the wrong one.

That brings Joe to the Bucs’ new defensive tackle/end, 29-year-old Chris Baker, who was signed yesterday for big bucks.

Baker took to Twitter and said a farewell to Redskins fans that included a line saying “the Redskins didn’t want me back as crazy as that sounds.”

It happens every year in the NFL; good players go unwanted and walk from their teams. Look at Robert Ayers and the Giants, a team that didn’t re-sign Ayers but went big-time shopping in free agency to get help at his position. Look at Michael Bennett, who the Bucs let walk for no good reason.

But players leaving in free agency raises red flags. Why didn’t the Redskins want Baker back? He was well liked, per various reports, and had been a durable presence there since 2012.

Hopefully, by this time next year, Bucs fans can laugh at the Redskins for dumping their 6-2, 300-pound space eater.

Well Baker is wanted here. Bucs have not had a DT they could be proud of since Sapp left.

  2. teacherman777 Says:

    @tmaxcon

you don’t get laid very much do you?

  3. Ben the Ga Buc Says:

Joe wrote “he’s got 12 1/2 sacks over the past five years, but 10 1/2 the last two seasons.” Assuming there are no typos in the statement, I think he may be able to do better than that with GMC, Ayers, Spence/Gholston. Hope that line meshes quickly. And wouldn’t mind one more pass rusher high in the draft.

  4. Tampabayucfan Says:

Perhaps halitosis or excessive flatulence. Maybe he was so stud endowed that he embarrassed his teammates in the shower….

  5. Bucsfanman Says:

Welcome home Mr. Baker! Now, go get you some sacks!

  6. Pa Privateer Says:

Welcome to the BUCS Mr. Baker!!!! We are very happy to have you!!!!

  7. tmaxcon Says:

    Teacherman

I get laid far more than gmc makes a play when it matters

  8. Bucsfan951 Says:

I’m gonna guess tmaxipad is a single male, in his 40’s, divorced, doesn’t have many lady friends, lives in a double wide (hey, I had to grow up in one so I’m not hating, I’ve just better myself so I would never have to do that again), has 2-3 dogs, and doesn’t get much “attention” of the opposite sex very often. Maxipad, tell me how much of these I’ve hit on. I have a friend like you… Metal head that strikes out with the ladies too and hates on everything that is “cool.” Maxipad, you’re a metal head, right?

  9. Bucsfan951 Says:

I’m not trying to be a mean guy, I’m just trying to figure out what type of troll we’re all dealing with…

  10. Joeypoppems Says:

    ^ solid comeback

  11. Mike Johnson Says:

Somebody here suggested Baker would not start for us. Evidently they never watched Baker play for the skins. This guy shows up on film, hits hard. and makes tackles. May be one of the steals in free agency. Yes, he will start!

  12. Joeypoppems Says:

    Damn I got arrow blocked

  13. redblud Says:

    Tmaxcon, absolutely ignorant statement.

  14. BigHogHaynes Says:

According to you that wouldn’t be very much!!

“you don’t get laid very much do you?”

I do! I do!! I DO!!!!!! Two hours ago in fact….that’s right, envy me.

  16. Guzzie Says:

Tmax your comeback was funny though

  17. Eric Denman Says:

Finally a legit NT to line up next to GMC. This is a solid signing Licht, well done sir.

  18. Guzzie Says:

    Probably not true either

  19. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

As to Baker, the Redskins line isn’t all that bad, you know. So saying he should get more sacks here? Anything is possible, but I’ll wait to see it.

Still, he is an upgrade regardless, so I’m happy he is here too!

  20. Pit Says:

Finally MCD will have a good partner there in center……

  21. tmaxcon Says:

It should be easy for you lovers of mediocrity to shut e up by naming five game changing plays in the last seven years. Since you can not ill continue to laugh at enjoy the creativity you fools come up with to justify a overpaid overrated mediocre dt who is not a winner

  22. SCBucsFan Says:

Like Ayers, I think this is a strong signing; not long term but great for next year. Now lets buy us a safety and a center today.

  23. redblud Says:

Ok, Tmaxcon, I’m new here, so at first I was thinking you we’re just trolling, but now it’s pretty clear you’re an idiot.

  24. SCBucsFan Says:

tmax did GMC hit your dog or something?

  25. SB Says:

I really have to start looking at who is posting these comments before I start reading. Every time I read glad I get a little bit Dumber

  26. DB55 Says:

Why didn’t the Redskins want Baker back?
    —————-
I’d say bc the org is a chitshow that is in chaos. Those types of org tend to do stupid chit like letting go one of their captains so he can sign with your division rival. Some orgs just don’t get it.

  27. SB Says:

My talk-to-text is so horrible that was supposed to read every time I read a tmax post I get a little Dumber

  28. Bradinator Says:

They let him go for he same reason they let 2/3s of their WR Corps leave..the front office is a dumpster fire. Who fires their GM on Day One of FA and a little over a month away from the draft? Now Bruce Allen will take over and we know what that looks like.

  29. LargoBuc Says:

Poor Redskins fans. That team looked to have finally risen above the mess. It took alot of guts for Gruden to stick by Cousins at the expense of RG3 all the while outlets like bspn are making it a race issue. But they finally had a team that could actually challenge teams like the Cowboys in the division but it appears it wasn’t allowed to happen and the Boys jump ahead to the top of the division. Again.

  30. Dirks GreatGranpappy Says:

    Amen sb

May god have mercy on his soul

My tmax either lives in the double wide or he lives with his parents still. I can’t put a finger on it. Hasn’t seen his dingy since 1984. Eats cuz he’s unhappy and unhappy cuz he eats

  31. Broy34 Says:

Tmax ENOUGH. If you don’t think people are proud of McCoy you’re insane. Yo u don’t have to be a dick like yourself to be proud. Dude was almost out of football after two years til he got back into church. Just stop. Ifs getting old and I’m sick of Ur moronic thoughts polluting the fan base. We all know your opinion so keep it to yourself. We all know how u feel. Every post dude. Clearly McCoy beat Ur annoying ass and banged Ur wife

  32. Dirks GreatGranpappy Says:

Largo the giants look to be a pretty solid team as well and they always play Dallas close. Looks like one of those two will take up a wildcard spot.

  33. Broy34 Says:

And tmax who the hell can name 5 game winning plays for a team that never wins til last year. When we win we win big. Just stop seriously

  34. R.O. Says:

If MB had a big mouth and rubbed the owners the wrong way. Then that’s a reason right there….

  35. $acbuc$ Says:

Joe would I be wrong if I say that Ayers and Baker is gonna force GMC to act like a Beast. We just stopped the run with one FA signing. Ayers, Baker, GMC and Gholston RBs pick your poison. If those guys don’t stick it too ya then Commander Kwon and LD will clean it up. I’m exited! Licht and the people in the organization see we need some attitude on our team. Ima quote Sapp on this one we just got us a bowling ball of butcher knives in Baker.

Off topic: Joe would bringing Blount back be a bad idea. Remember he likes to get the ball 25 times a game and is a load in the 4th quarter. We got some blocking now. Ps no more practice with the patriots please.

  36. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Okay I’m reading the comebacks but I’m still awaiting one of you to answer his question about naming 5 impact plays from 93 over the last seven years. Its easy calling names trust me I do so from time to time but can one of you step up to his challenge is a better question.

  37. ndog Says:

Tmax is correct McCoy does not play like a #3 overall pick and is overpaid (not that I care but its true). He is an above average player who goes into hiding when the game is on the line. In addition a player looked at the way he is should makes those around him better. Please tell me one player he has made look better than they are?

  38. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

And $acBuc$ you are correct sir, they’ve noticed Mr. Jollyann and his aww shucks antics don’t boad well when facing opponents that are dialed inn collectively to tear into your @$$. You don’t fight crime with good guys, you better served using some Barry guys that are familiar with the tactics of bad guys.

  39. Dirks GreatGranpappy Says:

Tipped ball in sd game that led to pick 6? Any sack is key irregardless of the time or the score so he had how many last year?

  40. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Just watch Swaggy on YouTube the attitude you will notice is immediate. Gawd I hope some of that rubs off. I’m sure Ayers like h3ll yea when it comes to this signing.

  41. Dirks GreatGranpappy Says:

You guys clamor for thugs yet we all ran talib or Blount out of town. How about Goldson and his bad ass ways getting all those flags? Man those non choir boys sure did help

Calais Campbell arguably one of the nicest guys in football yet we all wanted him. Hmm hypocrisy? lil bit

  42. tmaxcon Says:

you guys are hilarious with the come backs thanks… still not one of you highly intelligent fools can spout of 5 IMPACT Plays in seven years made by the almighty disappearing beast… the only reason you get dumber reading my posts is that reality sets in that you have been a fanboy of a fraud….

  43. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

He will love it here in Tampa, with no state income tax, and reasonably priced real estate as well, compared to where he came from.

  44. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Do this anyone. Go to Bucs app and view the video of Swaggy they have on there. The first clip is of him smashing Eli with so much force.. I dare one you to find and load a link a 93 doing something similar.

  45. DB55 Says:

    Tmax

First, ty for your service. I think you’re a hero and right or wrong you should feel free to say what you want when you want. ‘MURICA.

Second, GMC grabbed M. Ryan’s ankles one time and we won. So there, I guess he showed you. Lmao. I gotta stop drinking so early.

  46. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

This dude is about to be the baddest SOB on our D line. Watch.

  47. ARGH_M8E Says:

BUCS fans remember…. He’s known as “SWAGGY” and if u squint your eyes real tight, there’s a lil SAPP in this guy. Just watch the film, and remember I said a lil SAPP. Am I wrong? And is Eli ok after that?!DAMMMMMMMN!!!!!!!! Peep if you haven’t seen it, or just watch it on a loop😜

    https://youtu.be/hYYM1eI52KI

  48. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

I’m very pleased with Djax signing with us for more than one reason. One being it put us a little more on the map with him deciding to come south. It reminds me of Reggie White saying no to San Fran and choosing to go to Green bay instead. But honestly I’m feeling even more excited about Swaggy man. D@$! Kwon about to eat behind this dude.

  49. DB55 Says:

    Argh

You ain’t lying. I thought the same thing. Big man who can move.

FYI – that’s how you play DT.

  50. Steven007 Says:

tmax, it’s well known from the regulars here that you insert your tired GMC disdain in every post regardless of the OP. This just happens to be a post about the DLine so at least there’s the scent of relevance. I assume most of us are working when we glance at our phones for JBF posts. At least I am.. The last thing I’m about to do is research your magical 5 impact plays in 7 years. How about name 5 IMPACT runs that Walter Payton made in his career? Or 5 IMPACT plays that Mr. Sapp made in his career here. I would have to research those too because 5 don’t come to mind. It. Is. Irrelevant. Why? Because GMC isn’t going anywhere. He’s being paid very well with money that’s not yours and money that is not preventing the organization from acquiring the talent they want. Quite clearly the powers that be like him and want him here. These are people that forget more football overnight than you’ll ever know. Would I like GMC to be meaner? Yep. Imagine a snarling, surly GMC. He’d be a scary DT. But he’s not. And that’s ok. Just like it was ok with Lee Roy, the other gentle giant you would have hated in his time. Because he’s still better than most. And now he’ll be better still with Big Baker by his side. By the way, this is not a comeback (not every comment is a comeback); just a statement.

  51. Bucsfanman Says:

@Argh- Just watched the clip and dude, that got me even more revved up! That big man plays downhill! It gave me chills to think what he and GMC are going to do to guards and centers this year. Nasty!

  52. Reach87 Says:

I do not think McCoy rates as a Hall of Famer. However it is easy to pick out a few game changing plays he made thru the years:

10-0 Cowboys up in our red zone. Sack fumble on Romo, Bucs recover
10-7 cowboys up in our red zone. Sack fumble on Romo, Bucs recover
10-0 Bucs up vs Skins w skins in red zone. Sack Griffin and hold to FG
20-17 Bucs up on ATL w ATL on our 50, sack and punt
0-0 vs NO , driving midfield. Tip Brees pass, Buc interception
0-0 at Philly, driving midfield, sack and led to punt
Unable the score, but i saw tape of a safety and separate strip sack vs Miami

What I listed above does not include anything he did this past season.

I assess these are game changing plays because they led to turnovers, points or stalled drives. You asked for 5. Above are 7 and I barely tried.

  53. Joeypoppems Says:

Who actually has time to go look for 5 specific plays through 7 seasons? I get your point tmax but you dont honestly expect people to do that if they love or hate GMC do you? Lol

  54. Joeypoppems Says:

    Nevermind I stand corrected lmao

  55. Dirks GreatGranpappy Says:

    Reach
Next time I’m in Tampa the first 7 are on me

Can someone ask Pablo how to say lawyered in Spanish?

  56. Lord Cornelius Says:

“naming 5 impact plays from 93 over the last seven years. ”

He had 7 sacks and 2 FF last year – let me guess those were ALL garbage time lol?

Pretty sure I could easily name 5 from last year if I went though the game log but it’s a waste of time. It’s annoying because even when I’ve done this people still bury their hand in the sand. Just off the top of my head:

The first win we had was sealed on a Gerald McCoy play where he pushed the interior and deflected Matt Ryan’s pass…

He also had a hand on the ball in the most meaningful play of the Chiefs game where Conte was able to intercept it and seal the win…

Against the Charges; following a Winston turnover; on 3rd and 7; McCoy Sacked rivers and made a 45 yard FG a 53 yard FG that they went on tho miss.

That chargers game was the only game log I checked because I remember thinking he had an important sack. If I went through all the game logs I could probably find like 10 huge impact plays but it wouldn’t matter

  57. Bobby M. Says:

No better comparison then the dysfunction of the current redskins to the era of Dominick. And anyone that was on the roster with Bennett in Tampa will tell you Dominick didn’t want Clayborn sent to the bench for an undrafted free agent. It was best to remove that issue from the locker room entirely, then to…you know….have too much talent on the d-line. That strategy has only worked well for playoff contenders…..

  58. Stanglassman Says:

    ’16 Bucs v Falcons
Atlanta still had one more chance with 1:52 to play and a dangerous offensive trio in QB Matt Ryan, WR Julio Jones and RB Devonta Freeman. However, DT Gerald McCoy tipped away Ryan’s fourth-and-10 pass with just over a minute to play to seal the victory.
    ’13 Bucs v Falcons
McCoy’s 3 sack game I’d say was pretty good.

That was about 1 minute of research.

  59. No_Bucs_Given Says:

Went to high school with Chris. He loves the game and plays with passion

  60. Pickgrin Says:

I was hoping for Calais Campbell – but Baker is a solid player and we got him for 3 full years at just a bit more $ than Campbell is making in 2017 alone. Good value signing and I hope Baker outplays his contract.

You guys are forgetting the #1 rule regarding tmax – “Don’t Feed the Trolls!”

  61. Duke Says:

    NDog,

I have to ask, who do you pick to set the bar at DT? If GMC is above avg, who is above him?

One follow-up question, of the player You’ve chosen, who plays beside him on the line? How does Mr. X’ s teammates compare to GMC’ s?

I’ll take Suh off the board right now because He is a #2 pk, one ahead of GMC, who has been surrounded by high draft picks and/or far superior talent. He’s the persona you and maxi
crave , so it’s a given you’d include him. But that’s not really a legitimate comparison

  62. $acbuc$ Says:

NOS one of my favorite posters. Thanks for recognizing a player!

  63. Bucs101 Says:

Did y’all not just read him talking about the bucs the same way he’s talking about the skins? Good, great or what it’s disrespect. Millionaire or not know when to hold ur tongue sir. Ima buc 4 life. At this point screw Bennett apparently it was 4 a reason that Fan’s just don’t sometimes understand.
