Lovie Endorses Mike Glennon

March 16th, 2017

Flip-flopper Lovie Smith

If there exists a person who has no right to endorse Mike Glennon as the Bears starting quarterback, it’s the guy who benched him twice.

That would be Lovie Smith, who arrived as the 2014 head coach of the Bucs and promptly benched Glennon in favor of career loser Josh McCown, arguably the worst personnel move of the past dozen years — and one Joe never will forgive.

Glennon, however, became a starter after three games for the injured McCown. He performed better than McCown, but Lovie benched Glennon again en route to a 2-14 season that embarrassed Tampa Bay fans from Lakeland to Largo.

So, naturally, Lovie has the stones to endorse Glennon as the Bears’ new starter. The Chicago Tribune wrote about it today.

“What quarterbacks play in the league?” Smith said Thursday at Illinois’ pro day. “Guys that can throw the football. Mike Glennon can throw the football. Bright mind. Good guy. He’s going to be a good locker room guy. The Chicago Bears got a good football player, a guy that should help bring the Bears back.”

And people wonder why Joe drinks.

  3. Zwak Says:

Shut up Lovie, good luck Mike!

  4. Buc50 Says:

Kiss of death. Hopefully Glennon can overcome that endorsement.

  5. SteelStudBuc Says:

Lovie means we’ll… I think it would be exciting to see Glennon play well. Definitely an upgrade over Cutler.
Mr Smith is horrible with QB’s
    He’s a bad coach

  6. Negative Jeff Says:

ZWAK is spot on. And Lovie is a stubborn loser. Nothing worse than that.

  7. franka813 Says:

….said the man who cut Derrell Revis

  8. DallasBuc Says:

Among other things Incompetent Lovie Smith endorses include:
Ghost Johnson, Trash McCown, Anthony Collins, Toast Jenkins, toast, long afternoon naps during the workweek, hiring his own GM, hiring his own son, poor talent evaluation, poor decision making, sweet tea, basements, profanity-free professional locker rooms, calling everything ‘as simple as that’, embarrassing proud fan bases, excuses for poor performance, 2-14 and 8-24.

  9. SteveK Says:

    Wow, back off Lovie.

Lovie, along with the Tampa Two Mafia/Freemanites can all get lost.

If Lovie had the slightest clue, he would’ve left Glennon as the starter after he beat The Steelers in Pittsburgh.

Lovie and his friends and family plan should be on the hot seat at U of Illinois.

What a bad, terrible, sh!tty era of Buccaneer football.

Dude is full of BS and his pass defenses are the WORST in all of organized football: peeweee-NFL.

  10. The bucfan 88 Says:

Roflol hahhahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahah ah hahahahahahahahahaha that a great the man who benched glennon for mclown never beaten his former team is endorsing him wow Thank you lovie so when we kick the living crap out the bears we all know it’s all right cause lovie smith endorses glennon lol this crap is hilarious

  11. Matt Says:

I like to look at it as: Lovie always said he puts the players in who give them the best chance to win. Glennon gave them the best chance to win, however, he played McCown over Glennon so they could tank for Jameis, which in turn gave them a better chance to win over glennon. (Jameis would give most teams a better chance to win). I like the endorsement. Go bucs but I’m also rooting for glennon big time.

  12. Buc4Lyfe79 Says:

I’m just glad the Glazers had the good sense and “stones” to own up to a mistake and send lovie dovie packing…now, if they’d just properly assert their foot in Jason Licht’s rear concerning Mangold or Kelce, i’m sure all Bucs fans and Jameis included, would sleep better at night.

  13. FutureBucsGM Says:

Had he not we probably would not have drafted Jameis, wouldn’t have hired Kotter, wouldn’t have Jason Licht. So, just chill. It’s okay to be professional every now and then.

  14. The Buc Realist Says:

Thanks for nothing to the incompetent one!!!! We are just waiting for that 3rd rate college to hand him the pink slip so he can go ruin some high school football program!!!!

  15. JonBuc Says:

Benching Glennon was the worst personnel move in the past dozen years? Joe Inc. must have Ryan Pace’s ear ( Bears GM ) then. I just don’t see it with Glennon. He will send John Fox off to retirement in style this season.

  16. Rod Munch Says:

    Tank for Winston…

Come on, everyone knew what that was about.

  17. d-roca Says:

I look at the bright side. Lovies losing brought us our QB. No bright sides for lovie tho down in his basement. I think him and tedford are talking qbs right now actually. Go bucs

  18. Brendan Says:

Gag me!!!! Can you please stop mentioning that clown until Illinois fires him and sends him back to his basement. I still have a sore back from doing backward flips when the Glaziers fired him. By the way Glennon better load up on insurance after Lovie gave him the kiss of death.

  19. SB Says:

I don’t wonder why you drink Joe. 😂

  20. Dewey Selmon Says:

Lovie’s old team goes 9-7 the first year after he gets fired, the qb he benched is now the starter for the 1st team he got fired from and poor Lovie went 3-9 and had one of the worst pass defenses in college football. just wow.

  21. Pa Privateer Says:

BWAHAHAHAHAHA. Go back to your basement Lovie!!! I hope Glennon is successful and goes to the podium someday and calls out Lovie. OMG I hope to God that Glennon has a successful couple years and forces Lovie to watch his blessed bears win with the QB he never wanted.

  22. ARGH_M8E Says:

    Who?

  23. ARGH_M8E Says:

  24. BigMacAttack Says:

Not really a ringing endorsement, but that’s probably a good thing.

  25. theodore Says:

Seeing Lovie in front of the Bucs logo is giving me the willies.

  26. Tackleblockwin Says:

    Just stop it, Lovie.

  27. Tampabayucfan Says:

What an absolute joke to an ex-coach who is totally irrelevant. He blew any chance Glennon had at being a starting QB for the Bucs going forward…..for that, I am happy…but it wasn’t from Lovie’s brilliance, it was his incompetence.

  28. ClodHopper Says:

How is possible, after all we’ve been through, Lovie still surprises me with his nonsense?

  29. Buc4Lyfe79 Says:

L Murray off the market…signed by Vikes.

  30. SB Says:

I am Totally on board with you Pa Privateer

  31. iamabuc Says:

I’m telling you, man, our team is like a flicking soap opera….lol..here’s hoping for better days.

  32. The Buc Realist Says:

2 years!!! 2 years of pure garbage from the incompetent one!!!! 2 years of knowing that the Bucs had no chance!!!!! 2 years of knowing that they would finish last in the division!!!!!

The biggest mystery is how he made it to year 2?????

just like the incompetent one’s reputation, this class is dismissed!!!!!!

  33. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Jo you should drink because you refuse to see the tank for Fameis is why he benched Glennon. He knew Glennon would lose us our first franchise qb by winning. You see what you want to see as well as you don’t see what you don’t want to see. See what I mean?

  34. tdtb2015 Says:

Joe! Because of Lovie we got JAMEIS!!!!!

    His coaching got us Jameis!!!!!

    All is Perfect!!!!!

If Glennon was not benched, Mariotta wouldn’t be here either!!!!

    We got Jameis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I look back and now I am grateful HE GOT US JAMEIS!!!!!

He took us rock bottom and we are now talking the probability of a Super Bowl appearance within the next 3 years if not sooner.

He also got us Licht and Koetter!!!!

    Can you here those cannons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I look back and honestly I am at peace with the past. It got us to experience real football again!

Thanks Lovie!!!!! HE GOT US JAMEIS!!!!!!

  35. gotbbucs Says:

    Worst.bucs.coach.ever!

His monotone voice still sends chills up my spine, almost as much as Raheem Morris’ senseless ramblings.

  36. Mike Johnson Says:

Lovie also endorsed Jamis Winston. Knock it off Joe!! Haven’t we had enough of..LOVIE FEASTING?

  37. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

The Colts did it to get Luck but you don’t hear them crying.

This just in NFL.com got the Bucs in the top 10 power ranking. The boys are finally getting som rec

  38. BigMacAttack Says:

Glennon was another total waste of a draft pick.

  39. Scbucsfan Says:

BigMac, when we drafted Glennon there was no way you knew Winston would arrive.

  40. Pickgrin Says:

That “worst personnel move of the past dozen years — and one Joe never will forgive” is the decision that got us Jameis Winston. McCown was the tank. Lovie should be praised for tanking for Winston. C’mon Joe – you really think we lost 14 games by accident?

  41. DallasBuc Says:

“It’s never about the future. It’s always about the future.”
    -Incompetent Lovie Smith

    You are welcome!

  42. BigHogHaynes Says:

LOVIE: No longer a part of the organization. GLENNON: No longer a part of the organization! Simple as that! In essence no need to hold onto Lovie’s Balls!!

  43. Buccfan37 Says:

Wow..Glennon getting more popular here since he left. Hot topic Lovie can’t catch a break.

  44. The Buc Realist Says:

But we had to waste the offseason and part of the season COACHING THE lOVIE out of the roster!!!!! IF we did not have to do that, it would have been playoffs this past year!!!!!!!

lovie is like school on sunday…….no class!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  45. Poor Glennon Says:

Arguably he worst move in the past dozen years???????You were in agreement at the time. You loved you some Freeman and hated on the mob from day one. What now that the Bears signed Glennon to 15M per. Now he’s a good QB hahahaha. You need to throw yourself under the bus on Glennon. Not just blame Lovie

  46. Poor Glennon Says:

Buc unrealist. We would have made the playoffs is Winston didn’t choke in the clutch (vs Dallas) and then (vs Saints). 1.5 to 1 Int/Td just won’t cut it. Neither will 60% comp. The 3 to 1 ints/TD and 65% comp win consistently in NFL.

  47. tickrdr Says:

IF, IF, IF, IF, ……….. Lovie were going to tank the season to get Jameis? Don’t you think he should have/would have let the Glazers KNOW that was his PLAN all along so that they wouldn’t FIRE HIM after only ONE season with JW3 at the helm??? Now, it is perhaps possible that Lovie could be that stupid, but if so, then I am even more so SMDH and LMAO that he got fired the very next year!!! The irony of “but we were 4 – 12” seems so sweet!

    tickrdr

  48. The Buc Realist Says:

    If,,,lovie got a third year….

The Bucs would have finished last in the division for the 3rd straight year!!!!!!!

And we would be talking about the new head coach and new schemes right
    now!!!!!!!

  49. Blake_bucsfan Says:

@Buccfan37 Lovie deserves every shred of ill mannered scorn directed his way.

His stubborn and prideful nature have become his downfall. His unwillingness to change his philosophies no matter how much evidence shows that they are not working.

Yes, he may once have been a good football coach, but he is oblivious to his faults, and has refused to evolve along with the game.

I’d believe all this tank job bs if it weren’t for the fact that Lovie has proven his incompetence to be legit. Both in his 2nd year with us, and in his train wreck of a first season at U of I.

For those of you who believed that Bumbling Lovie Smith tanked anything other than the last game of 2014 against the Saints… It wasn’t known that Jameis would Declare after his 2nd year of College. We learned that very late in the season. Well after Lovie had Benched Glennon for McClown, even though Glennon was clearly playing better than that Bum.

I am STILL scarred mentally from that first game of 2014 against the panthers. And I owe that to Lousy loser Lovie and Stewart McClown.

    WORST QB COACH COMBO EVER!

  50. Buc1987 Says:

Ha ha ha this is hilarious. Lovie.

Tickrdr….McCown wasn’t the tank until the season was done for. Not sure what the Glazers were in on or thinking at the time. Lovie …could be that stupid. YES he could. He could be just an empty suit these days too.

Either way. I’m happy now, and I’m sure Glennon’s even happier.

  51. Buc1987 Says:

    McCown was the tank.

We’ve been over this in here. Over and over again.

Pissh the off-season. Draft hurry up and get here, and no Blake, before you start up, I’m not going over my theory again on McCown being the tank. lol 🙂

  52. Buc1987 Says:

Lovie also could have been the scapegoat for the McCown vs Glennon tankjob!

Who’s to say what the soccer brats are thinking.

  53. Blake_bucsfan Says:

87 McCown wasn’t the Tank. He couldn’t have been. We had no way of Knowing that Jameis would come out that year.

We purposefully tanked the last game of the year. That’s it and that’s all.

  54. Howard Returns Says:

    I’ll never forget you….Cannon.
    MGM 4 life…..*sniffle*…..

    …..I said I wouldn’t cry……

  55. Howard Returns Says:

    Poor Lovie.
    Everyone be nice.

  56. Bobby M. Says:

The follow up to this statement will be….why did you bench him…which lobs Lovie the opportunity to give his vague comment about “sticking to the plan” aka tank the season for Winston/Mariota. Im guessing there’s some hard feelings between Lovie and the Bucs.

  57. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Bobby M. The “Plan” he was reffering to was to have Glennon be the Quarterback of the future. But that was all a Lie. Lovie never wanted Glennon, he wanted to prove himself right.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not nor have I ever been part of the MGM. Once I knew we had a shot at getting Jameis, I was all in on the kid from that Moment foward.

But it still aint right that Lovie benched a kid that was performing much better than the Bum that he brought in to be his guy.

  58. Buc1987 Says:

No Blake…..MOST of us KNEW Winston was coming out. Joe as early as October.

So did you too. National media, maybe not so much.

  59. DallasBuc Says:

Agree with Blake, only last game was tanked once scoring Winston hung in the balance entering week 17.

  60. Buc1987 Says:

I know it’s hard to wrap your head around, but come on. Was Lovie REALLY that dumb? I don’t believe in conspiracies. To me there isn’t one here in Tampa cause it actually happened.

Okay…well peace out for now. Lovie. lol

  61. Blake_bucsfan Says:

After a 3 year stretch of going 11-33, Lovie the Dummy SUCKS! And he is a truly awful Head Coach.

  62. Buc1987 Says:

We’ve already gone over and over this. Did you expect them to start pulling players in week 10 or so? Nope.

    Nice chatting with ya though.

  63. Blake_bucsfan Says:

So yes 87 Lovie is that dumb.

  64. DallasBuc Says:

Don’t forget kids that Jason Licht was incompetent Lovie Smith’s righthand man and lapdog GM en route to the worst record in the whole damn league. The resulting Winston franchise QB has more to do with our recent improvement than any decisions Licht has made. All this fact tends to conveniently get lost in the perspective these days.

  65. Pa Privateer Says:

I never comment twice on the same topic but I can’t help myself……GO BACK TO YOUR BASEMENT LOVIE. Perhaps after another year in your basement will help fix ………..pffft who are we kidding….just stay in your basement and never show yourself again. I am not the leader of the MG8 mob but I hope he has a couple successful years in Chicago. MG8 don’t forget to mention the Pittsburgh win that put you back on the bench….

  66. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Explain the 3-9 record with a young up and coming college team 87?

And turning their pass defense within their conference from one of the best, to the very worst.

Is he still tanking for Draft picks? Does Lovie not know that there is no College draft? Some one should tell him so he stops tanking…

  67. Blake_bucsfan Says:

DallasBuc, We started 2-14, We just finished a 9-7 on the verge of the playoffs.

We are continuing to build a comprehensive team anchored both by a promising young nucleus of talent, and Experienced competent veterans.

We will continue to improve. We will make the playoffs this year. Bank on it.

    And get over yourself bro.

  68. tickrdr Says:

    @Buc1987:
If you are saying that Lovie and McCown had some secret conspiracy that only the two of them shared, then how could anyone want to play for him ever again in the future? And if Licht or the Glazers signed off on such a ridiculous thing, why then did he get fired ONLY ONE YEAR after drafting the man who was supposed to save not only his ass but the franchise?

    tickrdr

  69. DallasBuc Says:

Blake- I expect us to make the playoffs this year. In fact, I expect it every single year because you have to make the playoffs in order to win a SuperBowl.

  70. TampaBay AllDay Says:

    @ Howard Returns
I literally laughed out loud @ that comment

  71. TampaBay AllDay Says:

Bro u got the comment of the year im still dying about that MGM comment

  72. USFBUC Says:

Tickrdr – I honestly think the only reason the Bucs fired Lovie is because Coach K was a strong candidate for head coaching positions elsewhere. Had that not happened we might still have Lovie as the head coach.

  73. DallasBuc Says:

What most people fail to acknowledge and appreciate is how successfully effective incompetent Lovie Smith was at eradicating harsh language from the locker room. I mean come on guys, this team didn’t win every game or almost any game for that matter but holy gosh darn it there was no foul language that year or two and isn’t that what this game is all about?

  80. SteveK Says:

Who wants to make a bet?

I bet Mike Glennon wins more football games in the NFC Morth this season, than does Lovie in the B1G.

Glennon is gonna haunt Lovie all the way in Illinois. It’s going to be great to see MG8 prove Lovie wrong.

I wonder if Lovie reads the Newspaper Sport’s Section from the comfort of his basement? Glennon is about to give him some good reading material.

  81. BUC IT Says:

Lovie…. you didn’t even give Glennon a chance!!!!… only cause you didn’t want to be blamed if he didn’t succeed. He was clearly the best qb on your team until we got Jameis.

  82. BUC IT Says:

…i just realized that I just sent a message like I was talking to lovie. What an idiot. LMAO

  83. NCMike Says:

Tmaxcon and Buccaneer Bonzai are both probably filling out new insurance applications, since the ones they sent to Mike Glennon recently will now have to be sent to another company. $18 million guaranteed dollars is a pretty nice chunk of change. Congrats to Mr. Glennon!

  88. Howard Returns Says:

    *MGM*

  89. FLBoyInDallas Says:

I can’t stand Lovie Smith whatsoever, so take what I suggest here as coming from someone who would NEVER stick up for him no matter what. This is my honest opinion.

Lovie was under orders to tank that season so the Bucs could draft their franchise QB (Winston or possibly Mariota, depending on whether they ended up drafting first or second). When Glennon proved to be just good enough that there was no way they’d end up first or second in the draft, they pulled him.

Look at the entire season and how it played out. Look at that last game against the Saints. Look at the decisions to play or not play certain guys all year long that seemed so confusing. When you put it all in the context of purposely tanking for a QB it all makes perfect sense. Lovie may be incompetent, but he’s not a complete fool who can’t even look at his roster and realize who’s a better player than another.

No wonder Lovie was fuming after getting fired, claiming he was set up and stabbed in the back. He tanked on purpose because he was TOLD to do so. Yes, he’s a bad coach and I’m glad he was fired, but if you look objectively at all the evidence and ignore the official narrative you’ll see the plan all along was to tank for a QB.

It’s been done many times before so it shouldn’t be shocking. Look at the Colts sucking for Luck, and other teams in recent times. It’s a known strategy although no one will openly admit it. If fans were convinced they were wasting their money because their favorite team was losing ON PURPOSE FOR AN ENTIRE SEASON there would be a revolt. This is why you’ll never hear an owner, GM or coach even come close to admitting such a thing. Ever.

So back to Lovie…yes it’s totally possible that he likes Glennon and thinks he can do good things with the Bears. If he was ordered to tank the season, and pull Glennon as soon as he showed too much of a propensity not to lose, then it’s entirely believable that he would have good things to say about Glennon and his chances as a starting QB. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit that the reason Chicago was the ONLY team to offer anything close to the contract Glennon received was that with Lovie’s still-existing relationships there they knew the situation that went down in Tampa. They knew he tanked for Winston and they knew Glennon was pulled on purpose. Hence their confidence in signing him to a starter’s contract. They aren’t stupid. They had inside information directly from the source.

    Ponder on that for awhile.

  90. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

The tank began after Tedford left and we didn’t go out and get a real offensive coordinator going with Arroyo who had never called plays before instead. McClown was next because Lovie saw him up close and personal and the last game was the finish. I always believed the Glazers knew rs plan but after the 4 game skid to end the 2015 season they had no choice but to fire him

  91. The Buc Realist Says:

Some here need to replace “tank” with “incompetence” and they would be closer to the truth!!!!!

Maybe, Maybe things could have been different if the incompetent in his first few press conferences he talked about ” building” and “growing” but he grabbed the mike and said “fans should not be patient” and “winning” !!!! Which could not have been farther from the truth, and “Exposed” that there was not plan!!!!!!!

And if I was a NFL Owner, I would push for, If a team finishes dead last, and gets the #1 overall draft pick, It should void the head coaches contract!!!! No money owed!!!!! Finishing dead last is an embarrassment!!!!! the Incompetent one pulled player in the last game, But was the league’s largest buffoon for the other 15 games!!!!! Out matched, out coached, is the Buc legacy coach my scheme left in Tampa!!!!!!!

    Good Riddance!!!!!!!

  92. BurgDweller Says:

So Lovie came out of his basement to endorse a mediocre player. Back to the basement now Lovie!

  93. Buc1987 Says:

I see others were more than willing to discuss the tankjob. Good seeing how I was one of the fans the started the theory. Talked about it for days. Convinced myself it happened. No need to keep rambling about it.

FLBoyInDallas…you’re damn close. I mean Lovie may have been clueless on gamedays, but really. Not starting Glennon over McCown?

I just wonder how many times Glennon got on the phone with friends and family and said : “This is is bullsh** man.”

  94. The Buc Realist Says:

    @buc1987
