Help Still Available

March 11th, 2017

Bargain hunting?

Yes, Joe is typing this in the wee hours of the morning, hoping to beat Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht to the punch if he tries to pull off a move first thing in the morning.

There is still help out there for the Bucs if Licht is so inclined.

As Joe has stated, what the Bucs do — more specifically what they don’t do — in regards to a guard will speak volumes about the confidence the Bucs have in guard J.R. Sweezy. Fankly, he’s only a rumor for the vast majority of Bucs fans because they’ve never seen him on the field with Bucs gear, gameday jerseys or practice garb.

Pro Bowl guard T.J. Lang, late of the Packers, is still on the open market if the Bucs need help there. So too is center Nick Mangold, late of the Jets.

Wide receiver is grim right now. The best have all signed. Aside from drunken jailbird Michael Floyd who cannot leave the state of Arizona for the foreseeable future (no Bucs fans, Licht’s not going to sign him), possibly the best receiver is former Titans pass-catcher Kendall Wright. Joe wrote about Raiders free agent receiver Andre Holmes a month ago, and reports have him being courted by many teams.

Joe is going to guess Licht has solid intel on Wright from his friend Jon Robinson, general manager of Tennessee.

And if the Bucs are looking for a running back, Latavius Murray is still on the sidewalk.

The lack of movement on the center front when there’s a 6 time pro-bowler on the open market and a 29yr old starting pro-bowler on the eagles trade block is very disturbing. What’s the old saying? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Pretty sure I’ve heard Koetter himself utter those exact same words. Bottomline, why F up a good thing with Marpet at guard when you have two pro-bowl options at center available? Meanwhile you have an unproven since major back surgery guard who has yet to participate in a team practice for you much less a live fire game? WAKE-UP and WISE UP JASON LICHT!!!

  2. Buckin-around Says:

Joe get some rest ,Our two new toys from the Redskins are holding their press conferences tomorrow @ 1 buc, early, maybe Jason will have a last minute surprise signing there as well

  3. Joeypoppems Says:

Anybody know what is up with TJ McDonald? He is the best SS left in FA and I havent heard anything about him so far. I know he could be facing a 2 game suspension but if Wilcox signs in Seattle, maybe we should take a chance on him.

  4. Spartin Says:

I totally like how you tell Licht to wake up and wise up. It’s like you get paid to be a GM as well. Good call!

  5. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Trade a 2018 4th rounder for Kelce at center. Bucs are getting a compensatory 3rd or 4th next year anyway because of Glennon’s big payday, and Kelce is a Pro Bowler with several good years left in the tank.

All the rumors out there about Mangold are that he’s washed up. He’s not worth more than a veteran minimum deal or maybe a couple mil a year at best. There’s a reason we’re hearing nothing about the guy. At least Hawley’s getting crickets. Mangold is getting complete silence.

  6. Capt.Tim Says:

Good call on the early rise, Joe. Licht has proven to be a 24 hour GM!

To everyone who is concerned, thinking that Licht is counting Sweezy.
I dont think he is at all.
He is counting on Kevin Pamphile.
And His work last year has proven he can
If Licht has faith in Dotson
Lt- Smith,Lg-Pamphile, New center, Rg Marpet, RT- Dotson
    If Sweeny proves servicable.
    LT-Smith,Rg-Sweeny, new Center, RG-Marpet, RT-Pamphile

So, I believe Licht is comfortable, with which ever of those occur.
Licht may still sign a center. Now, or in the second wave of Free agency, After the the draft.

Another option- Can Pamphile play center? Can Caleb Beneoch?
Ben Gottschalk started a game at Center last season- could he be Ready for an extended shot at the big Time. Hes still on the Roster list I just looked at.
And so Is Josh Allen- Who was signed, then later promoted to the active roster.

I think that Licht will draft A Center.
But we do have some interesting, and very workable, Options.

Unlike more WRs, another RB, A second TE, and depth in our secondary

Hey Joe isn’t Adrian Peterson still panhandling on Dale Mary Highway?

  10. Guzzie Says:

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, funny, did you watch Bucs games last year? The center position is broke, finding a guard is way easier than a stud center, either 4th Year Pamphile or 3rd year Marpet moving to center is a move for now and the next 7-10 years, Sweezy or Benedoch can fill those guard spots, even Evan Smith

  11. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

FLBoy in Dallas do a little research on compensatory picks. Glennon signing a bloated contract is not the only variable. The will be no comp pick. I will cut you some slack assuming that you don’t visit this site often. This has been covered numerous times.

  12. CaptBuc Says:

Let me start by saying GREAT JOB so far. D-Jax and Swaggy should really help. I like the resigning of Gholston. We all know Licht isn’t done . As things settle down he will sign a couple more players that can give us depth if not help right away. So sign Foles to give us a good back up QB. Get us Wilcox he will bring some thump to the defensive backfield and we can offer him something Seattle can’t, a shot at a starting spot. Resign Robinson for depth at CB not to mention gunner. Bring in Mangold he still has a year or two left in the tank and it doesn’t cost you a draft pick. We really missed Mankins leadership last year. Then here is a thought outside the box I heard on the radio yesterday. Sign Cordele Patterson as a flex player. RB out of the backfield, WR, KR, and gunner now that Shep is gone. He shouldn’t cost you much and with Koetter’s imagination and Patterson’s speed Koetter could be a mad scientist. Think about it D-Jax is already stretching the field Patterson should have room to run. I know this is easier said then done. And I trust Licht. BUT I have also heard that the Bucs are very happy with their O-line and there is little depth in the draft that scares me! As I remember hearing that last year about our receivers about this same time of year and look how that turned out. PROTECT the franchise. #3. Come on Licht continue your magic get us a couple more players so we can truly go BPA in the draft. GO Bucs!!!

  13. Jeagan1999 Says:

Well done….so far Jason Licht! But there are some more pilevels does we can upgrade. I’ve been on the Kendall Wright bandwagon for a while. He caught 93 passes in Nashville just a few seasons ago, is a good slot guy, is still just 27 yrs old, and would only cost around $2.5 mil a year. He’s a productive guy who was not used properly by the Titans! GET HIM! He’d be a great compliment to Evans and D-Jax! You can also NEVER have enough good offensive linemen! Mangold is a NO BRAINER! He’s an instant upgrade at Center for 2 years while we groom a young guy….priced around $7mil a year! Don’t know much about Lang, but if he’s better than what we currently have on the roster…..GO GET HIM TOO! Believe it or not, the Bucs are now in one of those Championship windows for the next few years, and Jameis needs weapons and protection for us to take advantage of this opportunity! MAKE IT SO, JASON LICHT!

  16. Buccaneer scotty Says:

    What about McDougal?

  17. Trubucfan22 Says:

With the bucs signing DJ 11 mil and baker 6 mil. That is 17 mil

Glennon is getting paid 18 mil or something like that. Which basically makes it a wash. No comp picks. If we lost glennon to a big deal and didnt sign any free agents, then we would get a comp pick. But our active nature in free agency doesnt bode well for getting comp picks.

  18. Trubucfan22 Says:

TJ lang? Arent we pretty happy with Marpet and Pamphile, if sweezy plays thisbyear that will just be a another guy to add in the mix at guard, also evan smith… 3 or 4 starting caliber Gs already, no need for a Lang. But a center would obviously be welcomed. I dont like the idea of moving Marpet to center, if he had come out as a rookie as a center then great, but he has established himself as an elite RG. Why mess that up?

  19. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I think you are missing a few good free agents in your assessment, J0E.

  20. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

My vote is against Nick Mangold, but if we have no other option…

IF the bucs want to let Martin go for cap reasons, I love the idea of Latavius. Big back, terrific GL runner, decent hands, still very young.
