DJax’s Agent At Work

March 5th, 2017

Curious rumors.

So Saturday, all sorts of rumors floated all over social media claiming the Bucs are the leader in the clubhouse to land free agent wide receiver DeSean Jackson.

Maybe Joe is too much of a cynic, but Joe’s tapping the brakes here.

In all of these reports, did you see any source quoted? As in a named source? Of course not. First, it would be tampering. Second, Jackson’s agent doesn’t want to be exposed.

Look, Joe is not denying the Bucs very well could be the landing spot for Jackson. There is no doubt the Bucs have interest. But as Rod Tidwell famously screamed, “Show. Me. The. Money.”

Jackson isn’t coming to Tampa Bay just to shoot pool with America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, on his days off. He’s 30 years old. This is likely his last chance at a major payday. Retirement is near.

A week before the free agent dinner bell rings, it is premature at best to suggest the Bucs are the leader to sign Jackson. Wake Joe up when the bidding begins, then get back to Joe. We don’t know exactly what team is going to go after Jackson nor how many chips they are willing to shove into the middle of the poker table.

With all of these rumors floating out there, it reminds Joe of a famous line from Joe’s good friend, “The Big Dog,” Steve Duemig of WDAE-AM 620.:

“I smell agent.”

In other words, Jackson’s agent is floating these rumors to drum up a bidding war and run up the price for his client.

I realize that before free agency and the draft, most of these rumors are often so much smoke and little substance. More often than not, the rumors represent strategic posturing to throw other teams off of ones true intentions. On certain rare occasions, though, there is indeed fire behind the smoke. This is one time I hope that’s the case. Even if it’s a 3 year deal, DJax would begin a sea change in our ability to move the ball on offense. Get one more WR in the draft, as well as a dependable running back, and the other teams in the NFC South will be trying to load up on defense to try to counter our offense. I’m on board with this smoke, if there’s fire along with it.

  2. Birdman Says:

Be honest Joe, was this written by Djax-fan Joe or Garçon-fan Joe?

  3. KingBuc17 Says:

Did Anyone see John Ross break the 40 speed barrier yesterday …. but then come up lame? Was that really what happened? Was that knee or muscle? He scared me before…. now he really scares me… as much as I would love his blazing speed I would NOT go first round for him.

OK now to Djax, as much as I like him, we should not break the bank. $9M/yr on a max 2 year deal, otherwise go be an Eagle, where he really wants to go and retire.

There are too many other weapons in this draft and 2nd tier WR for our WR2 position, which we can get two for what DeJax is asking. Stills at $9M is a joke if someone pays him that and Brandin Cooks is not worth a 2nd rounder much less a mid first NO is wanting.

Stick Pat at 19 or trade down in this deep draft! If you stick @19 go with BPA in a weapon for Jawbo at 19 which should be McCaffery or Njoku, as Howard, Davis, D. Cook and Williams will be gone.

I would Rather trade back with someone who has multiple mid round picks (CLE, KC, SEA, MINN, TEN) and gain two maybe three picks in this DEEP draft of positions of need. There is not one player in this draft that I would trade up for that would make an impact.
Trade back and maybe still pick up McCaffery RB or Njokuin TE in

Rd1 McCaffery RB or Njokuin TE
    Rd 2a OBI SS
    Rd 2b D Foreman RB
Rd 3 Zay Jones WR or Evan Engram TE depending on Rd1 pick
    Rd 4a Carlos Henderson WR
Rd 4b Carroll Phillips DE or Bucky Hodges TE depending on Rd3 pick

  4. MadMax Says:

    Welcome to Tampa DJAX!!!

Zay Jones wont make it past the top 10-20 of the 2nd, Neither will Obi, and he just might go in the first according to what his combine results are.
And Engram has 1st written all over him, maybe top of the 2nd.

  5. Midnightstroker1 Says:

No on desean no on ross. No on free agency. Draft develop and move on. Stop over spending. Unless its like 5 – 6 mil a year on a free agent just let it go. Let someone else sign them.

  6. Max Says:

I’m not sure how a diva will affect Jameis. Maybe we can take a risk on a DJAX in another 2 years. I think we should have no high maintenance receivers until Jameis is proven for sure.

  7. Joeypoppems Says:

    @KingBuc17

Yes that is what happened. He said he cramped up during the run due to dehydration. He didn’t pull or tear anything.

  8. Midnightstroker1 Says:

This is the same shiet every year. Everyone is hyped about free agency. We got 68 mil in cap space oh we gotta get poe desean. I was for getting desean but no. Everyone is wanting a paycheck now stills wants 12 mil GTFO. Load up on a bunch of udfa and fuqk it. every year same bs.

  9. tmaxcon Says:

    Midnightstroker1

Draft picks and udfa will keep bucs on basement. Bucs must do well and be aggressive in free agency to become relevant and finally win meaningful game in more than a decade.

  10. tmaxcon Says:

Bucs have to get better in all aspects of the game free agency, drafting, offseason prep and game days. Each component is critical to winning consistently which bucs have never done. Being scared of free agency is a loser mindset. Can’t coach, play or run the organization scared that’s loser mindset.

  11. Joeypoppems Says:

Completely agree with you on both those comments tmax, well said.

  12. LUVMYBUCS Says:

  13. Defense Rules Says:

Midnightstroker1, like it or not, Bucs can’t compete in the NFC South without impact players. You can hit on UDFAs once in awhile (like Brate & Humphries), but if that’s our approach to building this team we’ll never make the playoffs. Jameis needs some true weapons, and he needs a quality OLine that can run-block & pass-protect. And he needs a defense $ STs that can keep us competitive in each game. Bucs are improving steadily, but we don’t have the luxury of strictly developing through the draft if we want to compete now. Too many holes yet to fill, thus the need for several impact FAs (WR? Safety? DT/DE?) to tide us over until we can draft & develop their replacements. Same thing with a couple of OLine positions I think (RT & C) … we did ‘OK’ last yr, but our goal should be a lot higher than that.

  14. Joeypoppems Says:

As far as D-Jax goes, the reports that he is flying into Tampa during the legal tampering period is telling. He can’t personally meet with the Bucs but if he is in town until the 9th he could be there to sign the deal.

  15. MadMax Says:

The window is small and the time is right. We’re on the cusp. We need FA WR, FA D line, FA O line. Jackson, Campbell, Mangold! A safety would be nice too but that can also be addressed in the draft….its a need but not as big as the other 3.

  16. Buc50 Says:

So no on Djax and just sign a bunch of ok players and become a perennial ok team. Draft and Free Agency are like the Lotto…you can’t win if you don’t play. We need play makers and Free Agency is how you supplement the misses in the draft.

  17. Harry in Costa Rica Says:

DJax is not my first choice, However… Pairing him opposite of Evans would be a dream! And just imagine what that does for our running game with only 7 in the box?! Could be a very exciting year ahead!

  18. Jonzey Says:

Trade up and get Cook, sign DJackson , Campbell, and Jefferson. Go in 2nd get TE, 3th round get wr

  19. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

Although it has gotten better the last two seasons, we’ve had a loser mentality ever since that Super Bowl team went away. If we didnt sign anyone this offseason, and only improved via draft, then I would consider us to still have a loser mentality. Although they might develop in the future, the time is now to win. We have a young core (Famous, ME, Kwon, etc) and with a few polished veterans that know how to WIN, we will be a very successful team. But unless we sign a few FAs, we’ll have another playoff-less season. Im not saying to break the bank here, but sign a solid WR (one for sure, maybe draft another) sign someome to compliment GMC, and make one inprovement in the secondary. (Do not interfere with VHIII’s development, but only if we deem Tandyland and Conte to be unfit.

And on another note, I dont know why our “fans” call GMC a loser and a sucker. First off, GMC is a playmaker. That’s what our defense needs. Someone who can gobble up RBs and QBs. And I think a reason people think GMC is a loser is because he was apart of loser teams. Its not his fault he was the only solid player on a team that was the laughingstock of the NFL.

  20. Rrsrq Says:

I am all over the place with FA and the draft, this is a good draft and several free agents that are bridge players, Bucs got the money but what they can’t do is mortgage the future in free agency when you know you have to pay ME and JW top money at their positions, not to mention Ali and Donovan. In other words, get good players and let’s ball, just no freakin kickers in the second round

  21. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Get one more WR in the draft, as well as a dependable running back,

Agree Lunchbox. Sign a top tier WR..DJAX..Garcon..Stills…implement the rest of your plan and then load up on D with the remaining five picks…although we may need one for an OL. I suspect that will depend on whether the Bucs brass feels Sweezy is TRULY healthy and Benenoch is ready as Pamphile was when he got the nod.

@KingBuc I’m still with NOSBOS in wanting Dalvin…if we can’t get him then I’m with your pick of Foreman. If we decide to have a bellcow RB then Foreman is the guy….he’s a beast of a runner and incredibly consistent…100 yards+ in EVERY game breaking the legendary Earl Campbell’s record at Texas…and he can block. He’s not a receiving back but that doesn’t mean he has to come off the field on every 3rd down…3rd and 2 or less and he’s obviously the main man!

Right now I hope we come away with either…Dalvin…or…McCaffery..or Foreman. I’m not sold on Mixon or Kamara but if the Bucs braintrust is then I’ll have to trust them. I realize there are some sleepers later in the draft but these are my three faves.

  22. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

That’s gospel Tmax And welcome to Tampa Djax..

  23. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Jonzey a trade up won’t be necesarry he’ll be right bro. I’ll never ask you to trust me again but trust me on this one.

  24. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Some of y’all are somewhat antsy and there is no need to be. You’ve allowed other posters to convince you that a trade is the only way this could happen. That s@!# don’t faze me I see things thru a diffrent set of lenses therefore I know better.DC is already as good as in the building. Just visualize him in that Buc jersey that’s all needed. The how it happens draft night don’t worry yourself wit.

  25. Chris Says:

Except St Pete, Foreman now dealing with a fractured foot

  26. USFBUC Says:

The only team that worries me are the Colts, I think the Panthers will either go CB or Fournette, and I think the Eagles may sign Murray given he has already been spotted hanging out with the Eagles QB.

  27. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Lol heck yeah Nos, and with all the Talent I’ve seen on display this past 2 days, I got no doubt that JL is gonna knock it out the park once amotherfreakin ‘gain.

DJax is already basically locked up at this point. Now we gotta make sure we get that big boy.

Division Champs baby. You heard it here first.

  28. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

I get what some may say about rumors. Thing is where there is smoke there is some fire. They better role out the red carpet for Djax and make this swift and send a message thru out this league “we ain’t bulls@$!in any longer”.

  29. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Whoops wrong thread. I don’t agree the DC is coming to tampa bro. I think that out AcDc loving Gm is eyeing up one of those Match-up nightmare Tight ends in the 1st.

  30. Blake_bucsfan Says:

    our*

  31. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

So, why did all the Peppers talk stop. The guy is the best safety in the draft AND he is an explosive punt returner. 2 abilities for the price of one.

  32. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

If we grab DJax then OJ Howard Fameis will put up over 5000 yards this season. ME13 put up 1300 yards and 12 tds with no one opposite him AND being double covered almost every play. Like it or not Fameis is a gunslinger and loves to throw. With 2 new receiving threats Evans Cam “the Bratest” also Humps numbers will improve. Getting a receiving back is not somuch important because Fameis first instinct is to look down field. We need a back who can run between the tackles, power, can blockand break away speed. OJ is a god blocker. Our line is not the best so it’s going to need that extra help in blocking both run and pass.

  33. Joeypoppems Says:

Peppers is definitely not the best Safety in this draft.

  34. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

    Scotty
He is one of the best ATHLETES is the draft. FAR from the best Saftey. We don’t need a saftey sized line backer with ZERO ball skills. Hard pass

  35. MadMax Says:

Safety? Obi. that is all. a 2nd on him will also make me happy.

  36. Crazylocha Says:

    #DogStrong!!!

  37. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

Engram is my favorite te right now. I’m starting to think of him like a jimmy graham like TE. He is more of a wr than a te. Think if a BETTER FASTER devin funchess. We would use him split out wide more than in line. Love it

  38. TeddyTB Says:

@ME_Goat he looks great but almost too much like a receiver. Howard has that great size and blocking ability to add with the speed. OJ could change the offense in a multitude of ways.

  39. Blake_bucsfan Says:

@TeddyTB I agree with Howard over Engram, but I feel as though O.J. has improved his stock so markedly this offseason that he may now be out of our reach.

And I have no probably that Engram is a receiving specialist Tight end. It would be a knock on him if had only had 4.6 speed. But at 6’3 235 and 4.42 40 he can fly. Only 4 receivers ran as fast or better than him. No doubt in my mind he could be an explosive #Weapon4Winston.

  40. Blake_bucsfan Says:

    no problem*

  41. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Oj looks good no doubt I’m just sole on guy that hasn’t shone dominance on the collegiate level. Engram has. Everytime ole miss played on TV that young jumped off the screen. The done can’t be said for oj. All we really know is he looks good in pads. Doesn’t mean he can really play.

  42. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Has Djax’s plane landed in Tampa yet is the better question.

  43. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    Not sole on a guy

  44. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

They both played in the same conference but one stood out the other didn’t. For my money I would go wit Engram. Y’all seem to be Big on who is being interviewed. It would appear Licht and Koetter feel the same. Njoku will be a better NFL TE than oj.

  45. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Bro, The man had 250+ yards and 2 Td’s against Clemson 2 years ago in the National championship. That aint dominant?

And hey bro, do me a favor, check out this sick Jason Licht quote I posted in the Dirk/Jameis thread.

  46. Blake_bucsfan Says:

I disagree, I think that O.J. stood out very much on tape. He is the complete package. I’m telling you he is the best blocking Tight end in the whole draft, in addition to being an Athletic freak. Fastest 6’6 250 plus guy ever recorded at the combine. There’s not a package he doesn’t fit in, and he would improve every area of our offense.

Engram is a beast too now don’t get me wrong. But he is more of a one dimensional. Njoku is a beast too, but he is the least polished, and the slowest out of the 3. Wouldn’t be displeased to get him, but I don’t think he will have the same impact as O.J. in the NFL.

  47. Trubucfan22 Says:

I actualy like what Davidbigbucsfan99 said. Jameis is a down field passer, he rarely goes to the checkdown and only throws short if that is the play call. Dalvin being a good pass catcher is wasted talent in the Bucs system. And i too would prefer we continue passing down field and stay away from 2 yard crossing routes and flat outs. Get the ball going down field and then pound the rock when the defense is on it’s heels. Then go back down field when they are up on their toes again. I dont think we need to waste a first round pick on a RB in this type of offense. We just need a RB that can get positive yardage on 1st and second down. Winston, mike evans, and gang will take care of the rest. Just say no to Cook.

  48. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

I would gladly take him if it’s for under 7 mil a year. Not worth anymore than that imo

  49. Midnightstroker1 Says:

Yeah tmax go all out in free agency and overpay 12 mil to desean and be irrelevant again. Then what?? Cut them and keep trying again? Im not saying dont be agressive but dont overpay. Tmax loser mentality? You are a bucs fan right? You don’t know anything besdes loser mentality. Youre our ice cream man.

  50. Midnightstroker1 Says:

Im all for improving but you cant just throw money at the problem. You see teams doing it every year. If its a reasonable asking price sure but djax will want to cash in. Plus hes wanting to play for philly. Something dont go his way hes gonna pout. Its not worth it. My opinion. Tmax you’re superior winning mentality and input is wearing thin. You’re an expert on gerald mccoy. Thats as far as it goes.

  51. Eric Says:

    Midnight

You don’t know what you’re talking about.

  52. Eric Says:

Adding desean to this roster will only help. You’ll see.

  53. Blake_bucsfan Says:

@Midnightstroker Going balls to wall in free agency worked out pretty freaking well for the Giants and Raiders.

  54. macabee Says:

I’m way out of school posting this, but i read the comments and figured you guys might want to chew on another rumor. I have no idea if this is valid or more agent speak. You decide!

    From Pewter Plank

    Lake Lewis Jr. of Redskins Wire – a division of USA Today – has said that Jackson will be flying to Tampa when the legal tampering period begins next week to see what can be worked out. Lewis states;

“Jackson could be signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the beginning of the free agency signing period which is Thursday, March 9th. I was told he is flying to Tampa mid-week during the “legal tampering” period where free agents can negotiate openly with other teams.”

  55. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Oh mac these dudes know we a have young G at QB and wanna experience that wave before they leave the game. They see a str8 winner and word travels fast. I wonder how fast Dalvin telling the whole NFL he wanna be a Buc traveled. At least 4.49 fast I’m assuming.

  56. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Buccaneer Princess can’t wait to see you wit your new handle Trubucfan22.

  57. Midnightstroker1 Says:

Giants and raiders went how far? What about the jags? All free agency winners last season. Were going as far as winston is gonna take us. That and our defense. Adding djax will help but its a bandaid. Not a long term solution.

  58. Midnightstroker1 Says:

Id be up for marshall over djax in free agency. If he is cheap enough.

  59. Blake_bucsfan Says:

They made it to the playoffs friend. And if not for Derrick Carrs unfortunate injury the Raiders would’ve have gone much farther.

Scared money don’t make money son.

  60. Eric Says:

He’s definitely a band-aid/bridge player. Still doesn’t mean he’s not worth it. Writings on the wall we’re drafting a wr too to mold under him and Evans. I could seriously see us contending this year. No more waiting.

  61. Midnightstroker1 Says:

Yeah making it to the first round friend and get blown out by the packers. Carr yeah would have could have. Whats your take on the jags? Friend…

  62. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Ok you mean the Jaguars, as in one of the worst coached teams in football Jaguars? Why would you try to use them as a point?

And yeah idk about you, but I wouldn’t be the least bit mad if the bucs sign Campbell & Jackson and we only made it to the playoffs.

You’re telling me you wouldn’t be happy if we made the playoffs? Friend…………………………………………

  63. Eric Says:

    Friend!?!?

    Baby steps…..

  64. Midnightstroker1 Says:

I want more than just a wild card exit. I want us to be able to draft consistently i wanna be able to have free agents come here without having to overpay every time. I want to be able get comp picks. I want consistency pretty much. Would i be happy if we made the playoffs sure who wouldn’t.

  65. Joeypoppems Says:

And to be fair most of the Jags FA signings were on defense and they had a top 10 defense last season.

  66. Midnightstroker1 Says:

    Friend…lol

  67. Blake_bucsfan Says:

@Midnight, Look I want us to win the superbowl every year too. But the only effect Free agency is going to have on the draft, is if we get all our desired targets, it will free us up to draft the BPA on Offense or Defense.
