Campbell Interested In Bucs But…

March 7th, 2017

Leverage.

Interesting news from uber-NFL insider Adam Caplan of BSPN.

Appearing this morning on the Ronnie and T-Kras show heard locally on WDAE-AM 620, Caplan’s sources — and he is as well-plugged in league-wide as there is — suggest manbeast defensive lineman Calais Campbell is interested in playing for the Bucs.

However, the interest has to be a two-way street and Caplan suggested the interest from Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht is lukewarm to Campbell.

“The interest in Campbell [and the Bucs] is more interest from him possibly wanting to join the Bucs than the Bucs looking out to sign him,” Caplan explained. “Now I am not saying they are not going to pursue him but the fact of the matter is what [the Bucs] need now really is one to two defensive tackles. Remember, [Will] Gholston as we know can go inside. We have seen Robert Ayers go inside. They need to add at least one more defensive tackle.”

It looks like to Joe, if Campbell is that interested in playing for the Bucs, it is Licht who has leverage and he knows it.

So Joe can just guess knowing a bruising, versatile defensive lineman wants to play for his team, Licht leans back in his leather chair at One Buc Palace with a devilish grin, takes a swig of coffee, flips on his computer to watch cutups of Dalvin Cook and Marlon Mack while cranking Pantera so loud Team Glazer is calling an exterminator to check the joint out for termites.

You can hear the full audio of Caplan’s interview below. Audio courtesy of Joe’s friends at WDAE-AM 620.

  1. Rojas Says:

I would love to have him on the team. Can never have enough players on the d line

  2. GboBucsFan Says:

Whhhhhhhatt? This never happens to Tampa.

  3. bucsfaninchina Says:

Either Calais wants that low tax rate or Jameis Christ is working miracles

  4. Ben the Ga Buc Says:

Fully believe Licht knows what he’s doing. I think we’ll get him.

  5. Bird Says:

Hard To know what is true? That should be no brainer for Licht

  6. The Buc Realist Says:

I was listening to Nfl radio on siriusxm yesterday, and just about every other call was a fan of some team asking how Cambell would look on their team… under the radar this guy is not……

  7. Bird Says:

Campbell is from the U. Miami hurricanes so enjoyed playing in Florida with no state tax

  8. MarineBucsFan Says:

I hope we don’t “F” this up. If he wants to play for us then make him a fair offer so we can take our focus elsewhere. There are other players to be had and I think having Campbell and Desean Jackson in place will make us an even more favorable place for FA’s. Others would then come at a bargain and/or our roster could be the tie breaker for FA’s deciding between us and another team.

  9. DBS Says:

Then he must want a vacation and knows Tampa is the most giving place to get it.

  10. DB55 Says:

Rumor has it that the ice cream man doesn’t want to be shown up by a real DT/DE so he’s asked Licht not to sign him.

  11. Lord Cornelius Says:

    Please god

  12. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Dear Lord..I have been a good girl this year, haven’t sinned that much, so please make this happen..

I’ll be even better behaved this year..

Licht!!?? Don’t play games!! Sign him!

  13. Rojas Says:

Hope this is true.. the Campbell rumors kind of died down when they signed Will. If Campbell wants to play here bring him and DJax in.

  14. Mann Says:

Steve i wish that you and Justin would stop all this Marlon Mack nonsense.. Really? He is just the local guy.. Look up Perine from Oklahoma.. Tell me who is by far the better player…

  15. Stpetebucsfan Says:

If we get…DJAX or Pryor…and Campbell we are set for the draft…if we could then get Dalvin and Curtis Samuel as our other WR hybrid do it all guy…we would be rockin’. That would leave at least four other picks in the draft to fill other spots…draft supposedly deep in safeties and WR’s and perhaps an OL.

Hey a guy can dream. More than anything I want weapons for #3 but if we can get Campbell and make our defense stout…it’s time to think about Minneapolis.
I can hear the ghost of Prince singing in the background already…”Let’s go crazy”.

    Exactly..let’s not fook this up..

    Mann:

Steve i wish that you and Justin would stop all this Marlon Mack nonsense

    Ahem.

  18. louis Says:

if this happens, our d line is finally going to be called formidable, to say the least! Picking appropriate depth in free agency and super youth in the draft and we will at least go deep into the playoffs for sure…no go get us some talent for Jameis to play with and wooopppeee!

  19. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Please don’t over think this one Mr. Licht. Please🙏.

  20. Defense Rules Says:

Aah yes, let the posturing begin. Agents, GMs, FAs, media pundits … hmmm, who to believe? How ’bout ‘None of the Above’ until the deal is done.

  21. gotbbucs Says:

If they do sign Campbell I think its safe to say we’re moving away from the traditional 4-3 defense.

  22. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    gotbucs

I do not disagree. I think we already showed some flashes of different D’s last year. I think…or perhaps just hope…that Smitty will really mix it up this year.

We have a lot of very versatile talent and I agree gotbucs if we had Campbell jamming the middle of the line we can use a lot of guys in many different roles.

LVD continues to blitz…Kwon…and I’m hoping since VHGIII is a Ronde clone we let him blitz as well. The kid is not afraid to stick his nose in there and make a tackle…and like Ronde I think VHG will figure a way to get even the giants like Cam on the ground or at minimum tie him up until the help arrives.

I think there are many ways to skin the cat and I see our pass rush improving this year if Smitty gets creative.

  23. Jimmy_Guwop Says:

Sign Campbell. Sign D-Jax… Draft Dalvin in the first, Cam Robinson in the 2nd, Desmond King in the 3rd, Gerald Everett in the 4th, Eddie Jackson in the 5th, Dede Westbrook in the 6th and Hardy Nickerson Jr. in the 7th… Get er done.

  24. feelthepewterpower Says:

Could be agent speak on cambell’s part to help drive up the price….and not from the player per se.

  25. PRBucFan Says:

lol the Bucs would screw this up, Calais isn’t going too be begging to play here.

They better not screw this up.

    Damn this.

  26. PRBucFan Says:

    to*

  27. Canadianbucsfan Says:

    Love the Pantera reference

  28. duthsty rhothdes Says:

Problem w signing Campbell is he isnt a former CFLer or Lingerie League all-star so doing a great football move like getting a proven stud DL is not in the shifty Lichtonomics win at all costs playbook

  29. GenocideD Says:

    F**king Hostile! 1-2-3-4!

  30. EA Says:

If he wants to play here than perhaps they can work something out, I’d be very very disappointed ( Lovie’s voice ) if the bucs dont show any type of interest to sign him.

  31. PRBucFan Says:

Calais’s impact on TBs defense is EXPONENTIALLY greater than the impact Djax will have on our offense.

  32. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

Sign Calais and Jefferson and use the draft to double deep into the deep pool of WR talent. Instant playoff team / contender on the rise.

  33. DB55 Says:

    Dusty

    You are not lying

  34. LifeOfABucFan Says:

PRBuc..you are so right..wow..gets me excited for our fans and team!

  35. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

    Db55 and dusty
Why must u be such negative Nancys?

  36. Defense Rules Says:

2017 Bucs Defense … assuming Bucs pick up 3 defense in draft, grab Campbell & Jefferson in FA, plus re-sign McDougald, Robinson & A. Spence:

    DT/NT – GMC, Campbell … McDonald, A. Spence
DEs – Ayers, N. Spence … Gholston, J. Smith, (Rookie)
LBs – David, Alexander, Bond … Glanton, Lynch
CBs – Grimes, VHIII … Jude, Robinson, R. Smith, (Rookie)
    S – Tandy, Jefferson … McDougald, (Rookie)

That’s a pretty formidable Bucs defense, assuming we draft well of course. Has better depth on defense than we’ve had in several yrs.

  37. ARGH_M8E Says:

    Drooooooling!!!!🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤

  38. ARGH_M8E Says:

The ship is on course!!!! Bwaaaaahaha 😝 This is so fn exciting!!!

  39. Buc1987 Says:

    Fingers and toes crossed.

  40. Not there yet Says:

We are not the patriots so no he can’t sit back like he’s been in the playoffs or to the Super Bowl so he can pay anything he wants. Being he’s only had one winning season its in his best interest to act like it until we actually win consistently

  41. BuccaneEric75 Says:

This could be a great off-season for us!

  42. Canadianbucsfan Says:

    @genocided
    Well done sir!

  43. DB55 Says:

    Goat

    Let’s re-visit this on Thursday.

  44. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    Not there yet,agreed..

  45. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

    Db55
Not here to beef. Just don’t understand the pessimistic attitudes all the time. We just had a winning season. Our QB problem is solved. We have a top 3 wr. We have a strong HC. And by all accounts (besides the negative Nancys on here) we have a very competent GM. And free agents WANT to play for us. It must be miserable to live life in negativity.

  46. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Sounds to me like Jason doesn’t want Campbell.

At least he’s not buying into the hype.

  47. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Oh, as to the no taxes in Florida, Licht says that never helps attract the free agents.

  48. Buc1987 Says:

So if you don’t rate, just overcompensate
At least you’ll know you can always go on Ricki Lake
    The world needs wannabe’s

    Give it to me baby
    Give it to me baby
    Give it to me baby
And all the girls say I’m pretty fly (for a white guy)

  49. DB55 Says:

    Goat

Nah we’re good no arguing. I like to label myself as a realist. Negative Nancy probably the same chit though. Lol.

History doesn’t support us going after the top FA. We’ll see what happens. I have this BBQ dry rub that works perfectly with crow. It’s still brand new though, never been opened, so we’ll see if I have to open it on Thursday.

  50. Bird Says:

    GOAT
You just ripped me two days ago for excitement with bucs interest in desean Jackson comments. Classic. Now you are dogging someone else for being negative about this signing. Wow!

Change your email name. Instead of GOAT. How bout HYPOCRITE

  51. DB55 Says:

And all the girls say I’m pretty fly (for a white guy)
    ——-
    Alt facts, lol.

  52. Rojas Says:

Read a report that the Bucs are interested in Bouye.

  53. TampaBay AllDay Says:

No if, and or but. If he wants to be here then get him

  54. Stpetebucsfan Says:

This headline and others like it say it all…..”interested in the Bucs”.

Still hard to get a handle on all of that after years and years of only hard core Buc fans being interested in the Bucs. We have had seasons where our own players weren’t even interested in the Bucs…where the owners were more interested in Man U…It’s a new day in Tampa Bay.

I feel like Sally Fields at the Oscars…”You like us….you really like us!”

  55. PRBucFan Says:

    Hype?

There is no hype for Calais, just consistent production and dominance.

  56. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

    No bird
    Please return to that thread.
I said that u had read an article that was someone’s opinion (non confermed) that the bucs were SIGNING Jackson. Not that they were interested. So don’t come at me all crazy and keep my name out your mouth

  57. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side.

  58. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

Children should be seen not heard

  59. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Where’s Pablo? What’s his opinion? I will only listen to him for now on..

and whomever said hype on Calais..there’s no hype..the man would make us a threat from day one..

  60. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

And on day two he’d be place on ir

  61. PRBucFan Says:

    what? lmao smh

  62. Buc1987 Says:

I don’t know Bonzai. He doesn’t have that big of a history of injuries.

  63. Buc1987 Says:

PRB….have a go with Bonzai for old time sake!

  64. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

87, I was actually referring to our luck as fans…lol

  65. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Bonzai has been hitting the free base a lil too hard it seems 😀

Jk but seriously first with the Derel Walker love and now the Campbell hate? U dont b makin no sense bruh.

  66. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Jason Licht would not be listening to Pantera, it would be AC/DC

  67. BuccaneEric75 Says:

All I know is that if there are good players who WANT to play here, go F’N GET EM’!

  68. Blake_bucsfan Says:

    ^agreed bro. 1000% agreed.

  69. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I love the fact that we are linked with so many NFC FAs. Weaken the other teams that could be a threat to keep us out of the playoffs.

  70. Trubucfan22 Says:

Sounds like d jax and Calais are a lock to be Buccaneers in 2 days.

If we do get calais, we will have 3 DEs who can also play DT. That versatility will be great to have… but man, i would love to add a real stud DT. But im not complaining about calais one bit. 🙂

  71. PRBucFan Says:

87 you can do what you want lol

Not sure what you mean by old times sake though ahaha.

Also not exactly sure what your going with him about? Lolz

  72. SB Says:

  75. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

Would be a good signing BUT I want Poe
@SB… We gotta hook up for a game…
Got that blue funk big homie… Perfect for the bong
THAT’S WUT THE BUC IS UP

  76. ARGH_M8E Says:

    TruBuc I’m w u

  77. DoNUTS Says:

Cute story but not based in reality. Campbell still has the leverage of 10+ other cap ready teams willing to pay for his services…so I dont buy this Bucs advantage stuff one bit. While I do think #3 is appealing to bring offensive players in….the DEF players are another story…the bottom line is the guaranteed money (Joe knows this)…if the Bucs offer the most then we will have a very good chance to land Campbell otherwise he will go elsewhere. This is not rocket science…its business.

The other factor is the Glazers….I dont buy that all of a sudden they are going to spend all this cap money…they have not done that in a decade. Why all of a sudden now?

  78. SB Says:

Man I would love to catch a game with you and a few other cats here! I live in Montana though. IF we make the playoffs then I WILL fly down if we land a home game!!!

  79. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

    Donuts

  80. SB Says:

  81. SB Says:

Just saw that we are also negotiating with A.J. Bouye from Houston.

  82. cmurda Says:

I knew there would be a ton of responses on this thread. Mention Campbell’s name and the panties get tangled in a wad. I’d much rather have DeSean and draft Cook. I match the Bucs lukewarm interest in Campbell. He’s a stud and there’s no denying that. If we can fit him in than fine, but not at the expense of upgrading positions of greater need.

  83. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

    Sb
    Where?
Like actually negotiations or just interests

  84. DoNUTS Says:

    Mike Evans GOAT Says:

Says the guy who puts GOAT next to Mike Evans name after 4 years in the NFL. Talk about having no credibility or understanding of the NFL and NFL history.

  85. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

Compare ME13 numbers to ANY HOF WR in their 1st 4 years and he is top 5.
So since u wanna come at me crazy, prove me wrong. What does the Manchester United thing mean?

My first Bucs game was Nov 14, 1994 v Lions…the game Barry Sanders ran for 237 yards

Why dont you just tell us about your knowledge of big business and what its like to run a multi-billion dollar international conglomerate. lol You seem so well informed even though your spelling needs work.

“4” years of playing and comparing to HOF players…. total nonsense…even ME13 would tell you that if you asked him…oh and by the way Mr. GOAT…ME13 has played 3 years in the NFL not 4…math must not be your strength. Back to school kid.

  91. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

That DT we need is available and goes by the name of Poe. And Licht would know better than almost anyone the situation concerning Campbell with all his connections in Arizona. Would much rather have a younger Poe for around the same money.

  92. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

U said 4 first in the post above^^^^ so maybe u should go back to school.
And u still didn’t answer the question! Don’t try to stall there bud. Tell me what it means. What is the Manchester United reference to???? Don’t avoid it. Just answer it. Another thing that sounds a bit suspicious is that we have “WON” free agency in the past 10 years. I.e 2014. How did that work out for us?

  93. Broy34 Says:

Doenuts-2014, the year they signed Carl Nick’s vjack and wright. If I hear one more moron talk about the Glazers not spending. Whens the last time a styd signed a 5 year Deal we let walk. You know what fills cap space? Resigning players not shopping like it’s the first of the month at Wal Mart

  94. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

    Broy
This guy donuts isn’t very smart. I don’t think he has been a bucs fan for very long. I can google old names and game stats too

  95. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Bouye is the best free agent not getting a lot of pub. Dude had been balling. Acquiring him would be what I said earlier. Amazing.

  96. James Walker Says:

Man, top free agents saying the want to play for the Bucs? How things change.

  97. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

    @nobos
Yeah, the guy is still young too. Just 25. Only thing that worries me is he only has 1 year of production.

  98. macabee Says:

It changes by the hour. lol.

Refuting a previous report, the Cowboys do not have interest in free agent wide receiver DeSean Jackson, tweets Clarence Hill of the Star-Telegram, who notes Jackson is likely outside Dallas’ price range.

Ok, that’s it! Not passing on another rumor until Jason Licht speaks. This is like a tail chasing a dog. I’m out! See Ya Thursday!

  99. Joeypoppems Says:

So does Pryor and he is a popular choice among fans on here

  100. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

  102. 21pilots Says:

Nice try but I was referencing your statement goofball (see below). My first post had nothing to do with ME13…I only spoke about Campbell. Comparing ME13 to ANY HOF well makes you look stupid. Ask Joe what he thinks…of comparing anyone to any HOF player after 3 years of playing. Its dumb…sorry if it hurts….tears in your beer or is that grape juice? lol

  104. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

Why on earth would the BUCS be talking to a FA CB… Please say it ain’t so… Who did then if A.J. is signed here…I mean he is a starting caliber CB. Damn it Licht I hope your in talks with Poe… Lol you know
    Bring home D Poe

  105. Joeypoppems Says:

And speaking only from a production standpoint, I don’t understand the love for Dontari Poe. His production has been on the decline since 2014.

  107. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

Some1 earlier said that snacks harrison was cheaper and has better stats

  108. Joeypoppems Says:

Not Harrison but the other Giants DT Hankins is probably who he/she was talking about. And if so then yes to both of those. I read Hankins market value will be around $8.6 million a year (I think Poe lowered his asking price to $10 million a year) and Hankins was more productive last season as far as tackles and sacks go.

    Hankins – 43 combined tackles, 3 sacks
    Poe – 27 combined tackles, 1.5 sacks

Granted the Chiefs are STACKED with pass rushing LBs so that could be taking production away from Poe and Poe could be a reason those LBs are having a great amount of success. I didn’t pay any attention to KC throughout the season so I have no idea if that is true or not.

  109. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

    ME Lover
He was talking to me. And if u compare ME13 numbers in the 1st 3 years he IS top 5. The NFL is all about projections. ME13 could very well turn out to be a HOFer. Compare the numbers and get back with me. Compare him to Rice, Moss, T.O (3 best all time) I’ve already done it about 2 weeks ago. But it is a PROJECTION and it is not comparing the entire career. It is projecting the career based on numbers so far
