Akeem Spence Moves On

March 9th, 2017

Motor City bound.

If this were a trade, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht made out like a bandit.

There were two defensive tackles on the open market: Akeem Spence and Washington’s Chris Baker.

Licht signs Baker and offers Spence his departing gifts as he heads to Detroit.

Baker is a starter in the NFL and could be a difference maker. He’s a stud against the run. Spence? Eh, great guy, so-so backup. For example: The high-pitched anti-Gerald McCoy crowd apparently didn’t see the Raiders game when GMC, dinged up and drained, had to leave the field for periodic breathers, was replaced by Spence. The Raiders gashed the interior of the Bucs rush defense play after play with Spence in for GMC.

That very likely doesn’t happen with big ol’ Baker in the middle.

Baker for Spence? That’s like Brock for Broglio. Or Carlton for Wise.

Upgrade: Bucs.

Advantage: Licht.

Huge upgrade. Best of luck to Akeem in Detroit, but the Bucs definitely improved on defense with the Chris Baker signing.

  2. Defense Rules Says:

See Chris Baker listed as 320 lbs on several sites, and as 298 lbs on several others. He looks closer to the 320 Joe. Is that his weight now?

  3. patrickbucs Says:

    agreed

  4. Joe Says:

He looks closer to the 320 Joe.

Joe has not been in the same room monitoring Baker’s weight. Whatever the Bucs list him as, Joe will trust them and run with it.

Akeem just got signed for 10.5 million @lions..Glad for him!

  6. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Akeem is now a Lion..10.5 mil contract..my other comment is awaiting moderation..

You are going to have trouble sleeping for the foreseeable future, sorry.

  9. Pickgrin Says:

    Good luck Akeem. Welcome Baker!

  10. Eric Denman Says:

Spence was an average DT at best, good luck in Detroit

Why did we not take the kid from South Fl.–The Redskins took him and dropped this old guy..

Yea we saw it. Personally wish McCoy would have stayed in the game more often. If so he could have gotten 2 tackles instead of the 1 he got in that entire game, which went into overtime.

It really could have helped McCoy improve his 277th ranking to 276th against the run.

joe I appreciate your concern but the smiling ice cream man knows he can’t play at the level of ayers and baker consistently. he will get all tuckered out… I smell an injury for the leader of the losing culture to land his arse on IR so he does not get outplayed every week by the new bucs.

  14. tmaxcon Says:

cancer93 will get just enough camera time preseason for some tape for the future tv gig then bow out for the year and let the men take over.

  15. DB55 Says:

We could only wish and hope.

  16. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Congrats Akeem!

    Wish U Well Brotha

  17. Trubucfan22 Says:

10 mil for spence? Lol that guy is way below average. Good riddence.

  18. Mike Johnson Says:

Spence checks average in most depts with an upside for the future. Good luck to him. Baker will be and is an improvement in my book. Score one for the Bucs!
Keep pluggin away Bucs. Keep pluggin….

AC/DC loving GM. Retarded title the joebucs puts into every story.

  20. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I do believe Baker is an upgrade over Akeem Spence, but I also think SPence was underused and never really got to step up. I never considered him a pass rush threat, more of a run stopper threat, and we need pass rush, so I get letting him get away.

    Best of luck to him.

  21. buc4lyfe79 Says:

Wishing Spence the BEST in his new digs, but securing an upgrade over him helps keep Clinton Mcdonald’s legs fresher. WIN WIN GO BUCS!!!

  22. Bucamania Says:

There can only be one SPENCE and it ain’t Akeem.

  23. Louis Says:

In reality this is a very effective trade up in dt. It puts McDonald in a position to remain fresh and step in seamlessly for our d line rotation. Now Gholston and Aires can rotate in on passing downs as well and our potential d line is beyond beastlike

What are you referring to with the 277th…276th?
