Warming To JPP

February 12th, 2017

Unwise investment?

When three-fingered pass rushing specialist Jason Pierre-Paul became a free agent last year, Joe wanted nothing to do with him.

That was because it was uncertain if he could fully recover from damn near blowing his right hand off in a Fourth of July fireworks mishap two summers ago. As a result, JPP has to play with a mitten-like club on his hand to compensate for his lost digits.

Last season, JPP seemed to prove that, despite playing with 1 1/2 hands, he can still get the job done. He played in only 12 games but still had 54 quarterback pressures, per the PFF tribe. JPP also proved to be skilled at batting down passes.

The Bucs still need a pass rush. Yes, Joe just loves the passion and fire of Mr. Beasting, Robert Ayers. Joe is geeked at the promise showed by rookie Noah Spence. However, Spence is coming off shoulder surgery. Who knows what kind of a pass rusher he will be?

Jacquies Smith, coming off knee surgery in Sepember, simply is unreliable. Talented, yes, but he cannot stay on the field and may not be rehabilitated by opening day.

JPP, who turned 28 last month, is likely looking for a long-term deal. Joe would be skittish about that. If somehow he can be had for three years, OK.

While the Bucs have oodles of Team Glazer loot to spend this offseason, keep in mind major contracts will have to be offered just around the corner to talented youngsters including Mike Evans, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, Donovan Smith, Ali Marpet and Kwon Alexander.

Simply put, the Bucs did not draft Spence and sign Ayers to share time. So if the Bucs did go get JPP, just a hunch Spence might be out of the picture as a starting defensive end.

  1. Garv Says:

Unwise IMO. Far smarter to go interior with a guy like Calais Campbell. He can play DE as well, move up and down the line. JPP is only two years younger and has only one good hand.

  2. JA Says:

Veto—JPP is moody and sometimes aloof, therefore high maintenance. Although I must admit, he appeared to give it his all last year, ala Doug Martin in a contract year. I’d rather have a trench warfare guy, with a little less talent, that simply loved to play football.

  3. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Tho would be a great signing for the right money. Ayers rushes well inside on passing downs and we could see JPP, Ayers, McCoy and Spence on one line, with David threatening to blitz. Me like.

  4. rayjay1122 Says:

I think Spence will be fine. I agree with Garv’s comment above, go for Calais Campbell if he becomes available. If we get consistent push from the interior line then I think we are good with Spence and Ayers. J. Smith also is talented and hopefully on a rotational basis or for quality depth, he can stay healthy.

  5. duthsty rhothdes Says:

Get him the guy plays like firecracker

  6. BKNYfootballhead Says:

JPP has a custom made glove now, it helps him grasp better. The mitton-club is history.

  7. Joeypoppems Says:

I would rather not see FA signed to long term deals. If we can get him for a 3 yr deal like Joe mentioned then sure.

  8. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    @BigPoppaBuc… Me like too
Now as someone who wants the BUCS to concentrate on #trenchwarfare if rather we target DT in FA… Campbell or Poe. Draft DE… Barnett or Harris if they drop. Ayers eventual replacement. Hell start now. Ayers can come off the bench to replace anyone on the line. NOW we’re talking

  9. Blake_bucsfan Says:

I’m all for getting as many studs into our defensive line rotation as possible.
You look some of the prolific pass rushes from recent years, that were so good they garnered Super Bowl rings for their respective franchises.

The 2013 Seahawks Had Red Bryant, Chris Clemons, Michael Bennet, Cliff Avril, Bruce Irving to lead their pass rush. In addition to housing a stable of Studs at DT. Brandon Mebane, Clinton Macdonald, and Tony Mcdaniels.

And the 2015 Denver Broncos historic superbowl winning defense had beasts like Von Miller, Demarcus Ware, Shayne Ray, Derek Wolfe, and Malik Jackson.

So why can’t the bucs go out and Get Calais Campbell to strengthen our interior Depth, and Grab JPP or Melvin Ingram to bolster our Rush?

I think any big time investments made to our trenches would be very wise. But that’s only if the signings work out.

  10. Bird Says:

Spence out of the picture. Joe s – please stop smoking all those herbs.

  11. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

@Blake_ man I hope Licht goes all in with the chips. Gotta make a splash play in FA this year…2 or 3 would send this fanbase into a frenzy… Knowing the team is going all in. Last year’s haul was nice but damn it… We need to go big… I’m tired of going home
Whoever they bring in…2 or 3 big NEED signings and we’re off. Needing only to grab a few pieces

  12. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    @Bird…
Never blame it on the trees man… Lol
But yea he’s on something talking like that

  13. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

I have mixed feeligns on this one. I don’t think his production is the question, but his character. We fo nit need any locker room cancers on a team making a playoff push. Also, I think we need to focus more on someone to compliment GMC on the interior. I think Calais Campbell would be a perfect compliment along with Ayers and Spence.

  14. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Rushing Downs
    • DE – Robert Ayers
    • DT- Calais Campbell
    • DT- Gerald McCoy
    • DE- William Gholston

    On Passing Downs
    • DE-Noah Spence
    • DT Calais Campbell
    • DT Gerald McCoy
    • DE *Charles Harris

Yeah – Good luck with that

  15. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

@LUVMYBUCS…. Ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding lol btw
Ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding

  16. ME13 Says:

If we can bring JPP home an hopefully Poe or Fairley !!! Then you can rotate an keep the Heat an stop the run!!! We got to build to beat Atlanta an stop the run against the Cowgirls !!! Got to have Depth!! Love the pieces we have ( Goldson Spence Mcdonld GMC RAjr Jac Smith!!! But we got to have the guys to compete!!

  17. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Outside been a beast, against 3rd & short – and rushing downs.
Please go back and watch the havoc – Calais Campbell causes on 3rd & 5+.

I don’t know how many times – you see this dude completely collapse the pocket.
He uses his 6’8 frame to bullrush guards – dropping them into QB’s lap…
    …almost errrrr time.

  18. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    WhatdaBUCisthis

    I mean damn bruh
We gotta make – a push for this dude.
Don’t get me wrong I settle for DT Chris Baker – But we gotta make a mover for Campbell

  19. LUVMYBUCS Says:

That spin move Charles Harris utilizes – is verrry reminiscent of young Dwight Freeney

  20. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

There’s no reason to question JPP’s production. He proved he can still play and be effective even with the oven mitt. But his character- that is what has me questioning his signing. I’d rather go with someone to compliment GMC on the interior. I think Calais Campbell would fit in nicely along with Ayers and Spence on the outside.

  21. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Charles Harris

  22. ME13 Says:

Guys like JPP & Poe don’t hit the market every yr!! So if you want to win a championship you got to have beast!!! You add them 2 our D-line ole Smitty mite stay 3yrs to go back to back !!! We are not a lot of pieces away!!! If we could add K Stills on offense !! Draft OJ IN the 1st get that big S uconn 2nd WR 3rd mean Joe Mixon 4th an then trade the 5th 6st 7th to get another 4th an draft another WR !!!

  23. Joeypoppems Says:

    @ME13

The reason guys like JPP and Poe dont hit the market is because they are good enough for teams to keep at all cost. Don’t expect anything different this year. Except Poe, I can see KC letting Poe walk.

  24. Suave_Jones Says:

I like the idea of Calais Campbell more than anything else. I want the big body inside to blow up the OL, demand doubling over the C and allow GMC to get single matchups because we KNOW what he will do when he has a 1v1.

  25. Lunchbox Says:

    Yeah, get blocked.

  26. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Calais would be huge for this team man..

  27. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

    I can’t help it 😂 Lunchbox.

  28. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Me personally I don’t want Calais because he’ll make gmc’s job easier. I’m done wit him. I want Calais because of what he’ll do. And that’s be disruptive for four quarters.

  29. RightBucAtYa Says:

Get Blocked? Lmao I’m just laughing at how ignorant that statement is. Never mind me , carry on…

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

JPP didn’t do well because it was a contract year. He’s consistent, which Martin is not.

  31. StPeteBucsfan Says:

I’m not as jacked as most about FA’s. Yeah I know we need help but again they are almost always tainted…or their present team wouldn’t let them walk.

I certainly concede some of them are just cap casualties…most however are overpriced…again I don’t mind paying too much IF they produce…but no more Ghosts.

Licht is just rehabbing his rep in the league. I read about a half dozen reviews yesterday and almost all praised his drafting but are still withholding judgement because of our HORRIBLE FA signings his first year.

I honestly do not know who was responsible for those FA’s but they were putrid. They are the major blotch on Licht’s career….were they Lovie’s picks or Lichts?
Is that why Licht may have greased the skid for Lovie because of that first year of disastrous FA acquistions that soiled Licht’s rep as well as Lovies? Just askin’?

  32. LakeLandBuc Says:

I don’t understand the logic of keeping Noah Spence as a ” Situational Pass Rusher”. I mean why would you pass up WR Michael Thomas, to draft a Part-Time player. As bad as we needed a WR to compliment Mike Evans, we pass up a great one for a Part-Time Player. Noah Spence should be a” Every Down DE”, all of this JPP talk is crazy.

  33. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

    Campbell over JPP all day

  34. LakeLandBuc Says:

I agree, I would sign Calais Campbell and let Will Gholston walk.

  35. Blake_bucsfan Says:

i Would keep Gholston and sign both Campbell and either JPP or Ingram.

  36. jerseybuc Says:

Giants have a decision to make. They have Jonathan Hankins and JPP both looking for deals and they can’t sign them both. They already have a huge contract on their other DE for multi years at over $80mil. The priority is JPP but he is asking for upwards of $15 million and 4 years or more.

Guy gets in a zone and is a man beast but he also tends to disappear at times. He will likely be among the top 5 highest paid DE’s in the league after free agency. It is a risk, I would much rather go after Calais Campbell who also brings some leadership to the locker room.
Hopefully, things are about to get interesting….

  37. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

No to Calais Campbell. He’s inconsistent and past 30.

At least JPP has more years in him and a lot to prove.

That said, he signed a one year deal with his home team last year for a reason…to earn a contract. I don’t believe he will hit the market.

  38. Boomer33 Says:

Jacques Smith was starting to beast the season before last. I would like to know more about his estimated recovery time from the people in charge.
