Accurate Jets Kicker Gets Cut

February 23rd, 2017

On Bucs’ radar?

Bucs fans care a lot about kickers these days. Rightfully so.

And the Jets cut theirs today, the most accurate kicker in franchise history.

Joe’s talking about Nick Folk, a guy who was a lot better than Roberto Aguayo last year.

The 32-year-old drilled 87 percent of his kicks in 2016, including 5-of-7 from 40-plus yards. Aguayo made 71 percent and was 4-of-11 from 40-plus. They both missed two extra points.

The Bucs signed inexperienced John Lunsford last month to bring competition to Aguayo.

That was nice. But with Folk on the market, Bucs fans might get a much better gauge of whether the Tampa Bay is serious about pushing Aguayo.

The former Seahwaks Kicker, Hauschka is also available. Either one should be considered although Hauschka did struggle with XPs

  2. Chris Says:

Please sign one of these guys. No way i I want a potential playoff run hinging on miss one soon Agauyo. No matter what Bonzai thinks, this guy will not improve. As I and 87 pointed out, this head case had problems his last year at FSU. This is a 2 year problem with him, not just a rookie year hang-up

Kickers are so hard to find. I guessing the Jets go qb in the 1st round then grab a kicker in the 2nd. i mean thats how it works right?

  4. Chris Says:

3-3 from 400-49, 2-4 from 50 plus. And, he’s only missed two xp in his career.

  5. Chris Says:

Lol Mike. You are if you’re Jason Licht. But only if its a Seminole

  6. D-Rome Says:

Let’s hope Licht doesn’t whiff in free agency on day one (see Sweezy, JR).

  7. mike Says:

Seriously though… I bet they don’t bring in a real nfl kicker like folk or Hauschka. They don’t want to bruise the physchy of their prodigy kicker. They want roberto to go into camp with confidence with no one tough to beat out. We will be looking to add another kicker about week 4 of the regular season.

Folk or Hauschka would force Aguayo to improve or be on the street. The earlier the better. The problem is, Aguayo needs to get more leg strength, and the sooner we bring in a competitor, the sooner the fire is lit. He needs a whole offseason to work on his accuracy over 40… Sheesh, I can’t believe we’re even talking about this. No kicker should have a problem below 50 yards. I am a Jason Licht fan, but I have to say trading up for Aguayo was the boneheadiest move he’s made… Jeezus, we could’ve drafted a safety and a DT with what we invested in an incompetent kicker. Even if Aguayo redeems himself and became lethal from any distance, this 2nd round pick looks dumb. Dear Jason, please go back to the smart GM moves and stop trying to get cute with your picks!

  9. AustinBucsFan Says:

First time ever commenting but I have heard enough about how awful Aguayo is and that he doesn’t have leg strength. Ya’ll obviously didn’t watch the kid in college. He would easily drill them consistantly from 55+ and nailed a 60 yarder in a spring game. His problem is all mental, and I believe he will have that fixed next season.

  10. Buc1987 Says:

    He’s over 30.

    JBF doesn’t want’em Joe.

  11. Defense Rules Says:

Joe, very nice touch in titling these last 2 pieces: ‘Verner Booted’ followed by ‘Accurate Jets Kicker Gets Cut’.

  12. Chris Says:

Yeah 87, cause Matt Bryant was definitely washed up when we cut him. Lol at the JBF over 30 he’s done club.

  13. NFLNut Says:

Unless it’s Justin Tucker … I’ll stick with Aguayo … I believe in the kid and think he will be a great kicker in the future

  14. Chris Says:

Based on the fact on the few kicks over 45 he attempted, he looked like my 10 yr old daughter kicking them? Yeah, he’s gonna be a great one.

  15. Chris Says:

Lol, the worst kicker in the league and ypu wont replace him unless its with the best kicker in the league? Must be a Seminole fan

  16. Rod Munch Says:

Get some competition for kicker, but I think kicker will bounce back and be fine. However you should always prepare as if that isn’t the case.

  17. Ghostofschiano Says:

Okung also released. Give Dotson some competition also.

  18. Buc1987 Says:

    Chris…the mojo is gone.

  19. duthsty rhothdes Says:

ol jason licht always soo crafty keeping us bucs fans on our toes, my sources tell me they have seen licht scouring the pubs of london and is very close to signing one solid ex footballer with an attitude to be the new competition at kicker and that is Nigel Gruff… google him, licht hits it out again

  20. USFBUC Says:

Nice one dusty I would love to see our kicker walk out with a cigarette in his mouth. Might go watch the Replacements.

  21. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I’m not ready to give up on Roberto right now, but if he’s still missing a lot of kicks in the preseason, cut his a$$.

  22. K2 Says:

He won’t have any trouble finding a job. So, the Bucs should pay him $$ to coach our boy. If “Berto” can turn it around great…we cut Folk and he will be picked up by another team almost immediately. If Berto can’t get it together…we have to let Berto go.

  23. Strider ....Sec 147 Says:

Blah Aguayo I believe will be a stud

  24. Trubucfan22 Says:

I think competition is good. But signing nick folk to a Comtract that he deserves would be giving nick folk the kicking job. folk is good enough to be a kicker in this league and he likely would not accept a contract to a team that is having a “competition” for his position. I would certainly respect Nick Folk if he did indeed accept a 1 yr 1 mil contract to help push Aguayo.

Of course I am of the mindset that the Bucs should do whatever they can to help Aguayo. While others are thinking the bucs should do everything they can to replace Aguayo. And I understand that. Aguayo was a train wreck last season. But I won’t give up hope on the kid after just 1 season. I give him to the end of training camp to find his stride. There are decent kickers on the street, I’m not really worried about the bucs not being able to find a kicker last minute before the season starts.

  25. Brian Says:

Not the right thread. Mike Glennon spotting at Baltimore hotel.

  26. cmurda Says:

Why are we talking about a kicker? Stop the madness. More importantly, what are we going to do about long snapper? Bwahahaha.

  27. DallasBuc Says:

It is professional malpractice to have even let AguaOh,no kick in regular season games last year after his dreadful preseason. He put our team in jeopardy every time he was trotted out there. It was humiliating for him, the coaches and player, GM and especially the fans. But GM is ultimately responsible and this keeker is the biggest liability on the team next to the GM himself.
Sign a real NFL kicker or pay the consequences in lost competitive football games.

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Chris Says
“Please sign one of these guys. No way I want a potential playoff run hinging on miss one soon Agauyo. No matter what Bonzai thinks, this guy will not improve.”

Well, you are entitled to want what you want, Chris. I won’t begrudge you that.

For the record, I am not against a true competition for Agauyo. I just happen to believe he will win that competition in the end.

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

DallasBuc, the Bucs really didn’t have any choice but to play him once he was picked. It was not Malpractice, it was necessity. They knew they would have to give him time to work through his issues, and its not like they could put him on the practice squad. Even now, a team who is patient (Raiders?) would snatch him up and give him another year or so.

And since they could not justify keeping two kickers on the roster (which I think would be wise this year), they had to play him.
