“Jameis Winston Isn’t Getting Enough Credit”

A glory days Buccaneer weighs in

Yes, the United States of America is slowly waking up to the sizzle of the Buccaneers and America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

But one glory days Buccaneer thinks it’s taking too long.

That was the sentiment from Anthony “Booger” McFarland during his morning stint on SiriusXM NFL Radio following the strangling of the Chargers on Sunday.

Joe imagines Booger waving Old Glory in the studio as he talked Bucs.

“Jameis Winston isnt’ getting enough credit,” Booger said, explaining to the nation that the Bucs’ 5-1 road record is evidence of the “mental fortitude” driving the team.

And the man driving that bus? Jameis.

Sure, it’s a team game, but it’s a quarterback league and has been for decades. If your QB isn’t driving the bus, and playing well, then it’s awfully hard to get in the right direction.

As Joe mentioned after the November thrashing of Seattle, Joe listened to Warren Sapp tell Jameis’ father after that win that Sapp would have won five Super Bowl rings if he had Jameis as a QB. Never mind that Sapp said the same thing about Josh Freeman five years ago. That’s not the point.

A franchise quarterback means everything, and the Bucs have one.

I expect a win Sunday, that’s not good…. It doesn’t feel right. Gonna keep wearing my ME13 jersey till will lose one!!

  2. ChanEpic Says:

Wombat, same here. It’s strange isn’t it?

  3. 813bucboi Says:

I agree with booger….and i’ll take it a step further and say jameis would’ve succeed this year no matter who was the hc….for jameis, I think learning the skills of who he’s playing with is harder than learning the play book….with that said, im glad he and dirk have great chemistry and have proven to be as deadly as jameis and mike…GO BUCS!!!!

  4. Lord Cornelius Says:

“.and i’ll take it a step further and say jameis would’ve succeed this year no matter who was the hc…”

Just like Kaepernick excelled with Jim Tomsula right?

Sorry I just have to say it lol 😉

  5. 813bucboi Says:

@lord….are you suggesting kap is on the same level as jameis…Jameis showed success last year and only continued to progress….he’s a special player…he would be great with any hc in the league…even jim tomsula….GO BUCS!!!!

  6. 813bucboi Says:

im happy he’s working well with dirk…..GO BUCS!!!!

  7. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Josh Freeman had some of the same ability as Fameis. He was a ball chucker but was simply not a football junkie and a little weak in emotions dept. Young man was simply too soft for someone his size. His ego too fragile. With that defense and Tony Dungy he woulda won a Superbowl!

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Jameis is getting credit where it counts….
His coaches, fellow players, Buc fans and local media…..especially JBF…..don’t expect ESPN to label him “America’s QB anytime soon.

  9. J 2.0 Says:

And he is only 22!!! The future is bright.

Just look at the 3rd down throws. He routinely makes plays that many veteran QB’s cannot make. He is only 22!!! He makes everyone around him better. Mike Evans is a great WR, but I feel it is Jameis that makes him elite!

Everyone get your Jameis jerseys right now. Get your Evans jerseys. We once again have players that you will be able to wear their jerseys for years. No more Josh Freeman jerseys in the trash. No more Cadillac Williams Jerseys to Goodwill. No more re-gifting Mark Barron jerseys. No more re-hashing past glory by wearing your old DB55 or Culpepper jerseys the Ray Jay on Sundays. Get your Winston and Evan jerseys now. They make the horrendous design beautiful to be a Bucs fan!

Shame on you. Freeman routinely threw behind receivers. Many other mistakes but I’m busy. I’ll rephrase in a Trump style tweet…

DavidBigBucsFan99 today compares America’s National QB to the shameful Sleepy Josh Freeman. Not Fair!. Sad. The failing DavidBigBucsFan99 has been banned from JBF message boards.

    (Not a Trump supporter btw)

  11. Rick Says:

Don’t slam Cadillac Williams. He was great running back that had some horrible knee injuries. As a matter of fact, I wore my CW white road jersey to the game Sunday and got tons of high fives for it!

  12. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Man, The Realist was a prophet back in that 2011 comment section.

  13. Lord Cornelius Says:

“@lord….are you suggesting kap is on the same level as jameis…”

Nope not at all but Kap was viewed as one of the bright young QB stars of the league just a few years ago when he was playing with Harbaugh. He’d been to championship games / super bowl / had good numbers/ and was young. My whole point is that coaching matters… a lot. Even to special guys like Winston. You can have talent and still marginalize it.

Also really just wanted to remind you about how terribly wrong & misguided you were on everything you ever said about Koetter & this team this year. ..

that he = Jim Tomsula despite INSANELY different coaching resumes going into their first HC job…
that he lost the locker room & players respect when we have one of the best locker rooms in the league…
that there were no improvements you could see on defense at all when I was pointing out how we were starting to kill it on 3rd down and that we were missing out almost our entire D-line early in the year
that Realist & I’s concept of the players being gassed after the Oakland game was BS. When we all saw what happened after a long week off and time to adjust…

I could go on and on. You may have eaten crow on all this but I don’t think I ever saw it.

NO WAY!!!! I’m a Bucs punter from the Dark Ages, so I have plenty of decent looking gear. Glazer Bros. have the coin to fix the hideous fashion designs. That merchandise ain’t cheap. They need to get with it ASAP!! I’ve been bitshing about it for awhile now, especially the awful looking player numbers and the red pajamas. UGHHHHH!!!!

  15. 813bucboi Says:

    @lord…..lol….lol…

as booger mentioned, jameis isn’t getting enough credit…..I guess booger should’ve mentioned you and @realist too huh…is that what you want?….at some point everyone was wrong about the bucs including you and @realist…..unlike jameis, your nothing special pal…..GO BUCS!!!!

  16. Bucsfanman Says:

Is it en vogue to break out the zubaz yet?!

  17. Defense Rules Says:

@Lord C … “My whole point is that coaching matters… a lot. Even to special guys like Winston. You can have talent and still marginalize it.” Amen to that Lord, you nailed it. Certain talented leaders can define the team, yet without excellent coaching the team won’t win diddly. But … it works in the other direction too. Great coaches fail all the time because they don’t have talented players at key positions. It’s a beautiful thing when BOTH coaching and talent come together to win football games. I’m confident that’s what we’re finally seeing with the Bucs.

And Joe, I agree 100% with Booger that Jameis isn’t getting enough credit. He’s not really carrying the Bucs on his back per se. We’re winning because lots of guys are stepping up at the right times, on offense, defense & ST. But Jameis has gotten us out of jams time and time again, and kept drives alive. He simply refuses to give up & I think that’s a very rare talent. Put an average QB in his place and the Bucs would probably be 4-8 at best right now. We’re blessed.

  18. 813bucboi Says:

@Defense says,”But … it works in the other direction too. Great coaches fail all the time because they don’t have talented players at key positions. It’s a beautiful thing when BOTH coaching and talent come together to win football games.”…..

that was my whole point I was trying to make….good coaches need good talent…simple as that….GO BUCS!!!!

    Nope. I also have Loudmouths.

  21. Rod Munch Says:

Fat Josh Freeman was a great young QB – had he stayed “cleaned” he’d have been our franchise guy, BUT, one big difference is that Freeman didn’t have the heart and leadership that Winston has, nor the intelligence. On those Sapp Bucs teams however he wouldn’t have needed the leadership since there was plenty of that, but the heart might have been an issue when dealing with Sapp and Keyshawn. Another fun fact: Freeman is still just 28 years old. Mike Glennon turns 27 next week – man if Schiano hadn’t ruined Freeman by driving him to (allegedly) drugs then he’d still be here and still be our QB for another decade. What if… Very very happy we got Winston now, but what a waste Freeman turned out to be, and what a completely different franchise the Bucs would be.

  22. Lord Cornelius Says:

    “@lord…..lol….lol…

Nah man I just want to admit you were wrong about pretty much everything we ever debated here this season. Your constant negative opinions of the team & the coaching staff were wildly inaccurate and it’s not debatable.

And yeah – we can all be wrong about stuff from time to time – but some of us actually will admit our mistakes. I find that more respectful than conveniently changing your position and acting like you never said all the dumb things you did.

I’m not sure I’ve seen any poster on here be more wrong about the team than you on so many instances; at least in a single season like this. I’m not saying that to be mean really; just based on what I’ve seen since following JBF the last few years.

Realist & I used to get into it over Lovie. I was pro-Lovie after his first season. I thought he just needed more time as the defense was improving over the 2nd half of 2014. Defensive improvement was pretty much my whole argument and reason for hope. I thought a legit OC would be huge for the team and that his defense would find itself in 2015. I was wrong. I admitted it half way through that season and I was all for firing Lovie before it happened. The defense regressed under his play calling. We lost a ton of games we should have won given our talent. All in all it was obvious that coaching was terrible.

We’ve only added a few pieces to the defense; which has been banged up more this year than last. Our offensive talent level is worse. Yet here we are; with more wins than last year already; after playing 6 of our 12 games against teams that will be in the playoffs this year.

That’s coaching. It’s a lot of other things too… but it’s mostly coaching.

  23. Cat Says:

But he gets most of the blame when they lose.

  24. Lord Cornelius Says:

“But … it works in the other direction too. Great coaches fail all the time because they don’t have talented players at key positions”

Totally agree. My issues was bucboi is using the “good coaches need talent” concept to play down the accomplishments of Koetter & his staff; after he talked tons of sh1t about them all year.

  25. 813bucboi Says:

@lord…..do you think dirk would’ve had similar success with last years squad?….without ayers, spence, grimes and VHG?….I rest my case….those 4 players have had a HUGE impact on this team and it isn’t solely because dirk lets them curse…its because they are more talented than what the previous staff had to work with….

my judgment of the bucs during the first half of the season wasn’t off base….we look like a totally different team now….I just wanted to see consistency….can you with a straight face say the bucs were playing good consistently in the first half?…hell nawl….it was a rollercoaster….from dirk f’ing up the clock, to him quitting on his team to his team not giving full effort as a hall of famer suggest….

my whole thing was that we didn’t have the talent last year….this year is different….I wanted to see proof that the dirk hire was a good move….during the first half of the season it wasn’t looking good….but things have turned around….now you can give dirk all the credit if you want to but as I mention as well as booger, jameis isn’t getting enough credit…..regardless of who was hc, the team would’ve followed jameis regardless….I’ve given credit to those who deserve it….ask your boy @realist…..but like I said, you’ve been wrong at some point during the season(first half) and I was wrong about dirk….

as @defense pointed out we were both right about the bucs….it takes good coaches to win….it takes talented players to win….I prefer the chicken, while you prefer the egg….either way we’re the same….GO BUCS!!!!

  26. Tbbucs3 Says:

Just saw a headline on NFL.com taking about playoffs and saying “Andrew Lucks colts and Mike Evans buccaneers”. Mainstream media has yet to figure out that This is Jameis team.

  27. bobby4919 Says:

when i watched him at FSU i got the feeling that every time he went back to throw he’d throw a TD. I’m beginning to get that same feeling now!

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Winston doesn’t deserve ALL the credit. He’s been great as a leader and QB, but he isn’t doing everything, and this team is in a team “development” stage, so its better to share credit.

  29. Lord Cornelius Says:

“@lord…..do you think dirk would’ve had similar success with last years squad?….without ayers, spence, grimes and VHG?….I rest my case….”

Yes absolutely if they had last years’ schedule!!! We have played half of our games this year against playoff teams! 6 out of 12!

Last year through 12 weeks we had 3 such games; and one of them was @ Houston against Ryan f*cking Mallet who was cut that same year. A rational football fan wouldn’t even count that. So let’s say 2 playoff caliber teams in 12 games… vs 6 this year. That’ 3-4 more expected losses easy.

If we had last years schedule and last years squad with this coaching staff; I’d expect an 8-4 or 9-3 record vs 6-6; if not better.

I get that you’d rather spin spin spin than just man up and admit you were being a jack4ss all year; but it’s absurd that you’re now actually saying your analysis was spot-on early this year; and have shifted to this dumb BS argument that our talent level is SO MUCH better than last year because of 2 30 year old FAs and 2 draft picks.

Talent level is debatable honestly. Yeah we added the 4 pieces you mentioned. However – you ignore all the stuff we’ve lost on offense… Doug Martin / Charles Sims / Vjax … that’s 3 huge names right there that were huge losses the vast majority of this year; that were big contributors last year. You also ignore the fact that our D-line has been more banged up this year than last (jack smith gone for year; mcdonald & ayers missing tons of games, etc). Grimes has even missed time with injury. Hey Jude has been suspended the last 2 weeks and we played a guy last week I’d never heard of.

But whatever man. Not like any of this will get you to own up to your bullsh1t. Carry on

  30. Tampa Tony Says:

If any unit has carried the team it’s been the d. Jameis and the offense are far too inconsistent right now.

  31. SOEbuc Says:

Jameis wants to win too much. He’s too mature. He’s not Freeman getting wasted in SOHO the night before game day.

  32. 813bucboi Says:

@lord…talent is debatable?….do you know how dumb you sound……..your wrong as usual….GO BUCS!!!!

  33. Eric Says:

There are people who can’t tell the difference between josh freeman and Jameis?

  34. Lord Cornelius Says:

“@lord…talent is debatable?….do you know how dumb you sound……..your wrong as usual….GO BUCS!!!!”

Yes talent is debatable. I made a fact based argument for it. Feel free to debate it. Calling me dumb isn’t really an argument.

Your entire argument hinges on adding Grimes/Ayers/VHIII/Spence. 2 30 year old FAs that have already missed time and a rookie CB/rookie DE. Improvement for sure; but you’re acting like we signed 2-3 pro bowlers. None of these guys are going to the pro bowl this year.

Let’s go over this in more detail even though it’s a waste of my time for people like you:

We were a top 5 rushing offense last year with a fully healthy Martin & Sims. We’re nowhere close that this year. We were also much better in games with a healthy VJax last year compared to the games he missed. Joe wrote an entire article about it during that season.

Martin/Sims/Vjax accounted for over 3300 yards of our offense last year. Martin & SIms accounted for almost ~2,800 yards by themselves. That’s like 1/3 of our entire offensive production.

So yeah; when the majority of your offensive skill players from last year have been hurt all season; and you’ve added 2 30 year old medium profile FAs and 2 draft picks; it’s debatable whether the entire talent level of the team is that much better. Not to mention the D-line injuries that were insane early this year when we had guys like Channing Ward starting..

    I’m so dumb.

  35. Lord Cornelius Says:

    “..your wrong as usual…”

This is where I’m done with you. I’ve been right about everything you and I debated this year. Not even in a subjective debatable way; but in a complete objective you are wrong as f*ck kind of way.

I’m no longer feeding the troll.

  36. Doctor Stroud Says:

“Blue 80” is the new “Omaha”!

  37. Buccfan37 Says:

I was wondering if Winston used the “here we go” snap call last season. There seem to be less dumb penalties this year on the offensive side. Here we go Bucs!

  38. Buc1987 Says:

I will never doubt Jameis Winston and the Bucs again.

I will never doubt Jameis Winston and the Bucs again.

I will never doubt Jameis Winston and the Bucs again.

I will never doubt Jameis Winston and the Bucs again.

I will never doubt Jameis Winston and the Bucs again.

Pound that into your brains and you’ll be where I’m currently at as a Bucs fan.

  39. Buc1987 Says:

    Are you there yet?

  40. cmurda Says:

Forget about national media. We won’t get respect until we get into the playoffs and probably not even then. For the ones of us lucky enough to have watched our SB win, do you remember all of the pundits clamoring for the Raiders to win? I do remeber Tony Kornheiser picking Bucs from start and then a couple days before the game Wilbon also picked us and changed.

  41. satchseven Says:

We lost a ton of games we should have won given our talent. All in all it was obvious that coaching was terrible.

no this team was young last year plus jw3 is more comfortable in the pocket now compared to last year and earlier this yr. he is not forcing as much dumb stuff like last year i love him checking down instead for forcing bs to me13 . still there are holes on this team .butnext draft should rally put this team where they should be right on schedule no matter who was coaching.i have been watching the NFL since 1970 and i knew they were not ready last year.

  42. LongSeason Says:

All right. Joe and Jameis have me believing in Jameis. The turnaround from Yucs to Bucs is Jameis. I was tough on Joe and Jameis, but seeing what the Bucs are becoming is fun. Jameis is the reason for this. Beginning with his work ethic and starting with his question he posed to his team mates, Jameis has proven he is the Bucs and yes, the leagues most valuable player.

Numbers are nice. But what do numbers mean for a team? In the grand scheme of things, numbers help but they don’t tell the whole story. What tells a huge part of the story is what affect a person has on a team. Consider the affect that Jameis, America’s Quarterback, pro bowler and Bucs signal caller. Jameis is putting up nice numbers and that is good, but what is great is his affect on the team.

Jameis has taken a franchise that has talent but little passion or spark. What has he done to this team to make him of such great value? He has single handedly changed the passionless, fireless losing culture that was the Yucs and he has created a passionate fire-filled team into the Bucs who expect to win.

Swagger. That is something that hasn’t been seen in Tampa since the days of Brooks and Sapp. This is a change in total team, franchise and community culture. Not only has Jameis changed the team, he is changing the community. The value of this goes beyond stats, numbers and wins. This goes to heart of what creates stats, number and earns teams wins. Jameis has made losing unacceptable for a franchise that accepted weekly curb stompings.

The Bucs would get punched in the mouth early and lose any will to fight. The passion wasn’t there. But with Jameis, the team has learned to recover and punch back. The team is punching back with the passion required to overcome and conquer.

It is this reason that I say that Jameis is my pick for the league MVP. This is over Ezekial and Dak of the Cowboys. Why? Dallas plugged them into a talent laden roster. They have done wonders on the roster. But I beg to ask the question, did they change the team culture as much as Jameis changed the team culture? Did they make everyone else that much better? Or did everyone else on the Cowboys squad make Zeke and Dak play better?

I know their success, but you could see the talent Dallas was amassing. The Bucs on the other hand couldn’t seem to do anything right. Then We get double curb stomped. Jameis asks a question of his team mates and then he writes a passionate letter (we will excuse Winston’s grammar). From that moment on, the team came together and began to play as a unit. That affect, changing the entire culture of the team, the franchise and community to a winning culture is why he should be considered for league MVP. League MVPs have that affect.

Oh. And if I have any Grammatical errors, please excuse them. The worst grammatical error I have seen in my life is Martin missing a field goal. Buc up Roberto, you have a chance to be better than Martin.

  43. James Walker Says:

Honestly, they might have won five Superbowls with either Freeman or Winston.
