No Receiver At Trade Deadline

November 1st, 2016
Passes on supplanting roster.

Passes on supplanting roster.

Despite the Bucs scraping the sandlots and velvet-lined lounge of the Vero Beach Ramada Inn for the likes of Freddie Martino and his Band of Renown, due to a rash of injuries at a critical position, the Bucs decided to stay put at the trade deadline.

The Bucs, for better or worse, will try to make a run at the final nine games of the season with Mike Evans, Rudy Humphries and a bunch of receivers pulled from the recycle bin for America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

Joe isn’t sure what to make of this. Are the Bucs raising the white flag for the season do the suits actually believe Jameis can overcome every defense the rest of the year knowing full well if Evans can be shut down, so too can the Bucs.

  1. Ben the Ga Buc Says:

Disappointing. Cue all the Jason Licht haters.

  2. R.O. Says:

Raising the White Flag.. Not sure what the expectation was? Was there a chance we may over achieve, sure. With a wildcard exit. But realistically 6-8 wins was the O/U. No? No speed on “O”. D line does not play the game on the other side of the Line of Scrimmage. Say what you want about GMC, he is not a game changer. Daryl Smith has done nothing. and got torched on Sunday. Safety play is horrendous. LBs can’t tackle. Should I go on?

  3. BucTrooper Says:

I will tell you what to make of it:

The strategy is literally “hope and pray.”

    Hope Jackson can contribute something.

Pray one of the scrubs steps up and grotesquely over achieves.

Hope the other teams in the NFC are equally decimated by injures.

    Pray the fans don’t notice.

The lack of a move shows me that the Bucs aren’t serious about making a move this season to get to the postseason. So why should we be serious about them??

  4. DB55 Says:

Bucs are raising the white flag for the season
    ——————
I’m not really convinced the glaziers want to win. Maybe saving a few mil in cap money is more important. It’s hard to believe that neither Dirk or Jason felt the need to upgrade the roster.

Honestly don’t know what this org is doing anymore. I was disappointed when Boldin signed with the Lions. Now I see Percy Hardin back from retirement. I’d even take a Steve smith right now at least we’d get someone real to tell us what’s really going on in this locker room.

  5. North Korea's Quarterback Says:

Licht has made some nice draft picks. But his bad decisions are just terrible.

  6. Todd Says:

How Jason could not see our depth at wr was terrible at training camp is beyond me

  7. D-Rome Says:

The Buccaneers aren’t committed to winning.

  8. Joe Says:

    North Korea’s Quarterback Says:

LOL Given the fact the NFL is very likely unavailable to the North Korean populous, this made Joe laugh. 🙂

  9. 1nebuc Says:

EVERYDAY I READ THESE POST AND ALL I REALLY EVER HEAR IS A BUNCH OF GRUMPY ASS OLD MEN. I WONDER HOW MUCH FOOTBALL YOU GUYS HAVE PLAYED . YOU GUYS ARE WHAT WE CALL TV PLAYERS AND EXECUTIVES . THIS IS A GOOD TEAM NOT GREAT BUT GOOD . IF YOU REMAIN PATIENT WITH THIS STAFF AND NOT JUDGE THEM ON THE PASS YOU WILL WATCH SOMETHING BEING BUILTTHAT WILL MAKE YOU VERY PROUD IN A YEAR OR TWO. GO BUCS

  10. Buc1987 Says:

This guy Licht I tell ya….

    Just kidding.

  11. 813bucboi Says:

this is a head scratcher…..maybe he’s tanking for myles garrett…..GO BUCS!!!!

  12. Conte Piscateli Says:

Let’s face it, he had to look at what he can get in trade and compare that to what may be available in the draft and free agency next year. Let’s face it we aren’t 1 WR away from a Superbowl run, so no you don’t trade a draft pick for a half a season rental of a player. I think if we would have won Sunday maybe he would have made a move. At 3-4 we can’t seriously trade the future for a run at 8-8.

  13. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Tmaxcon (If your out there)

Concerning our “DT Gerald McCoy to Dallas” conversation

We’ll the Jets attempted to take advantage of the opportunity

    Per: PFT

“The Jets are actively shopping Sheldon Richardson as the trade deadline approaches, according to a source who spoke with Mike Florio of PFT (on Twitter).

Sheldon Richardson (vertical)This jibes with a previous report which indicated that the Jets have approached the Cowboys about a potential deal. While we heard last week that the Jets were unlikely to move Richardson, it now appears that they have ramped things up with hours to go.”

  14. JJ Says:

Wow, I didn’t know Sternberg/Silverman were in charge of the Bucs too, LOL! I was hoping Cutler and Jeffrey would suck last night nobody else is worth it that was being talked about. Now we know we are not getting any more help so it is time for someone to step up. When we win this game Thursday and are a half game back, they will regret not getting Jamie’s more help. Sad but expected. Damn Sweazy killed us in so many ways- now we are gun shy on a trade. Getting Jeffrey would have allowed us to go WR later in the draft, too.

  15. Defense Rules Says:

Disappointing to say the least. Our GM isn’t giving Jameis (or Koetter) a chance for a winning season with the roster he’s put together. I know it takes years to build through the draft, but FAs & trades can fill in most of the gaps in the meantime. Licht’s 2016 draft produced 1 starter (Vernon) and 1 rotational DE (Noah), but pretty much wasted the rest of the picks at this point. The rest are only getting playing time because of injuries; other than that they’d be riding the pine. Starting to look like he’s stocking this team with a bunch of undrafted rookies and captures from other teams’ practice squads. Bucs have the money to make some deals, and instead we’re operating on the cheap … again.

  16. 813bucboi Says:

    1nebuc aka dirk koetter….lol….GO BUCS!!!!

  17. ElioT Says:

They probably realized that they don’t have a chance of making the playoffs regardless of who they could have brought in. They’ll be lucky to get to 8-8 and that won’t get you a Wild Card this year.

No reason to mortgage the future, this team needs as many picks as possible.

Just hope they can continue to build on something and foster some kind of depth for next year.

    Go Sucs!

    #lichtmyb*lls

  18. Kobe Faker Says:

Tampa bay buc has two games at home with atl and chicago….

If they lose both, they lose the city for the year, and only 40% will come back next year

  19. tmaxcon Says:

    LUVMYBUCS

good info luv… I am disappointed in Licht… Too many gambles going into the season with all the injury histories to key members of the roster and gambling on every WR not named Evans. I am glad they did not make a bad deal but I would have liked to see a move.

  20. ben Says:

I wonder how many season tkt holders are ok with the same bad record year after year.. Sure , lets spend another 2 high draft picks on a kicker.

  21. JJ Says:

Plenty of cap room next year it wouldn’t have been a rental, just sayin’.

  22. iamkingsu Says:

Can we please address Center and the left tackle position please?? Move Donovan smith to right Or even kick him inside. This team will look a hundred times better.

  23. BucsFan90 Says:

Hey at least we have Sweezy, Aguayo and Grimes. No need to panic

  24. BucinJAX Says:

1nebuc, I resent that comment. I’m not a grumpy ass old man! I’m just a grumpy old man. So far, my ass hasn’t gotten grumpy at all.

  25. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The time to acquire a WR was in FA or the Draft…..no sense in mortgaging our future by giving up a draft pick for one now.

And, Joe…..I understand that receivers like Martino & Dye are inexperienced and not developed yet….but there are countless examples of WRs who were at their level that eventually produced. Let’s just hope Martino & Dye don’t turn to JBF for encouragement.

  26. AtlBucFanDan Says:

“Tampa bay buc has two games at home with atl and chicago….

If they lose both, they lose the city for the year, and only 40% will come back next year”

About the only thing I have agreed with you on, Kobe. I’d like to add that if we lose these two, our likely next winning chance in Hades will be New Orleans.

  27. AtlBucFanDan Says:

    BucsFan90: Don’t forget about Jackson

  28. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We have $10 mil to buy a top receiver in FA next year…..why give up a high draft pick and the money now?
Our rounds 1-3 should be WR, S, DE (order depending on available player)….we need a top WR, TE in FA or a S. We will have a boatload of cash next year.

  29. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Tmaxcon

Yeah, but I wonder how much of that was based on Koetter & Smith’s assessment of roster. But your right though – evidence: signing Sweezy and the Aguayo pick. But
it goes a little deeper than that. I’ve heard several times over the past three offseasons – that the BUCS where in on several high profile free agents. But couldn’t sweeten the pot to close the deal.

Could it be that he’s not a closer??

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I agree with not trading away any picks.

I don’t know why any Tampa fan would trust Jason Licht to carry out an actual good trade outside of the draft itself.

He absolutely sucks a vet evaluations.

If his strength is the draft, then how does it make sense to take away picks for a trade that probably will not pay off anyway?

  31. LUVMYBUCS Says:

…If he’s not a solid closer. Then ownership has to make a change. You know what I’m talking about. How many sales reps/managers have you fired that couldn’t cut the mustered? You can have an amazing office – solid backend staff (support) a solid product. But if that sales floor can’t sale water to a wale – your just waisting good advertising dollars on leads. Essentially just spinning your wheels.

  32. rayjay1122 Says:

They better hope that ME13 stays healthy or it is going to be really ugly.

  33. grafikdetail Says:

    1nebuc for president!!

  34. iamkingsu Says:

This is definitely waiving the white flag anybody want hat disagree is nuts. This is a vertical offense with no one that can get vertical. They (Licht,Koetter or whoever is running the show) knows this.

But they know they can get away with it by just saying Jameis has regressed. No the talent around him has regressed that includes everyone but ME 13. I’m not asking to mortgage the future just bring somebody in that can run. It’s somebdody on the street or someone’s practice squad somewhere that is capable of getting deep. But You’ll never here #3 complain about it at all like you’ll here somebody like Aaron Rodgers. The kid is a true leader.

  35. Doctor Stroud Says:

If the Bucs were in a better situation, such as a winning record and a chance to make a run at the playoffs, I would support a trade, but sadly, that is not the case. Despite the heartbreaking losses this season, the Bucs are still in position to take the lead in the division. Will they “siege the day”? This Thursday’s game is a litmus test. For now, the GM/coach are probably content to just ride out this season and see what happens. How many years does Licht have left on his contract? That might determine how aggressive he is in going after players and wanting to make a run.

  36. tmaxcon Says:

    LUVMYBUCS

i agree if he is not a closer than a closer needs to be brought in… Players want to win thus making bucs one of the most least desirable free agent locations in NFL… The no state tax and weather sales pitch is beat to death and has very little weight in a nfl players decision making process I would bet. young hip rich guys don’t weigh weather and no state tax into the equation that works for retiree’s just fine. The only two ways to break the cycle is Win or Overpay their is no other solution.

  37. Warrenfb12 Says:

Ya this is baffling to me. Bucs are in the hunt currently, would really be if they beat the Falcons, yet we are going to trot out Russell Shepard and Cecil Shorts? Come on. I think that it is a serious case of neglect by the FO and stunting Winston’s growth. I understand a build through the draft mentality, but to expect a rookie to come in next year and make an immediate impact is foolish.

  38. Brent bull/buc Says:

How weak. I get being frustrated by losing but you can’t handle losing? You have to stop supporting Bucs who you guys claim you love. Wow that’s soft and stupid. What are you guys 8 years old?

  39. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Both Dye & Martino have 4.4 speed and know the playbook….that’s why they will be on the active roster this week….it would take a couple of weeks for a new acquisition to be ready.
Lets hope that Shorts starts to produce….we badly need him to show up.

If I were Koetter, I’d run a lot of 2 TE sets and get the ball to Brate more…..that along with more screens should improve our offense.

I agree that the empty backfield sets aren’t producing as well as play action…..at this point, play action on 1st & 10 will work for us most any time.

  40. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    tmaxcon

True – But some the deals they’ve lost out are to losing organizations.

As for overpaying a little – on a good free agent to solidifying a position.
Sure its not the long term solution but drop off in talent out ways everything else.
I mean how long– will we keep saying — next year this –next year that.

  41. JabooBuc Says:

It would be nice to know what the deal is with Sweezy. If he can come back and be a healthy contributor then maybe this line gets good quickly. Move Marpet to center, with Sweezy and Pamphile at guard and then add another vet or draft pick. This allows us to either draft receiver high or sign a top tier FA and then dedicate a lot effort to the defense.

  42. Buc 4ever Says:

As a season ticket holder since 1999, I am about to give up. It sucks going to games when the Bucs have won just 3 of their last 21 home games. And then to have the nerve to send a survey asking how did I enjoy the game! You must be kidding me. I pay for 5 tickets a game and it seems I am more upset after the game than the coaches and owners. Bring in talent or loose life long fans who have stood by since 1976!

  43. DB55 Says:

Just as a reminder last year the chiefs started their season 1-5 and lost their best offense player. They finished the season 11-5 with a playoff birth thanks to their 5 pro bowl defensive players.

We have 3 pro bowl defensive players in GMC, LVD and grimes. We are not too far off and we have the best rookie DE and CB in the league. So what’s stopping us?

  44. tmaxcon Says:

    So what’s stopping us?

Heart on Defense and too many injury prone players with so called “Star” labels.

  45. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    DB55

Yeah but look at that Veteran Staff & Defense they had though

    Staff
    • Andy Reid – Head Coach
    • Brad Childress – Co-Offensive Coordinator
    • Eric Bieniemy – Running Backs
    • Andy Heck – Offensive Line
    • Bob Sutton – Defensive Coordinator
    • Emmitt Thomas – Defensive Backs
    • Al Harris – Secondary/Cornerbacks

    Defense
    • Jaye Howard LDE
    • Dontari Poe NT
    • Allen Bailey RDE

    • Justin Houston LOLB
    • Derrick Johnson LILB
    • Josh Mauga RILB
    • Tamba Hali ROLB

    • Marcus Peters LCB
    • Sean Smith RCB
    • Ron Parker SS
    • Eric Berry FS

+ Lets not forget Arrowhead Stadium (Historically) is one of the toughest
venues to play – from November onto the end of the season. They won
    6 at home – and 4 away.

  46. Loubucfan Says:

WTF, as a season ticket holder, this is the pile of $hit that the Glazers are going to put on the field. No receivers,no running game, no defense, no weapons for jamies. We’re f’d. This is a big FU to the game and the fans. I wonder if this tactic would work over the pond at MU football team. As they say back in the neighborhood, screw me once shame on you, screw me twice, Shame on ME! See if I re-up Glazers, you cheap bastards!

  47. Tackleblockwin Says:

Hang in there Bucs fans. Being a fan of this team is not for the weak hearted. It’s tough…but someone’s gotta do it. 🙂

  48. richbucsfan Says:

It could be that there are too many holes to fill by trade so the thought is to let it go til the draft. This truly is a pathetic excuse of a team. Talentless for the most part with a few ‘good’ players. Can’t win anything but a participation trophy with that. Hey, didn’t watch the game Sunday…went on a family outing. Much better use of time…

  49. Billy Buc N Brazil Says:

WTH is our GM doing? Why didn’t we sign CJ Spiller? Why didn’t we make at least a play for T. Smith or Jeffries? No let’s just roll with Mike James and a beat up R. Sheppard! I have to really question the decision making and most importantly the thought process inside One Buc Place!!

  50. RP Says:

Marques Colston is better than anything we have and he’s sitting at home waiting for a call.

  51. AtlBucFanDan Says:

No team ever admits it; this is a rebuilding year or two or maybe even 3. Our GM said it when they let the last coach go.

“It does take time, but I think while you’re building a good football team you can compete.”- Jason Licht

  52. Getaclue Says:

Anyone we could acquire you can’t expect to even make an impact for at least 4 weeks. When have you ever seen a wr just walk into a new club and dominate before getting the playbook the timing and the Rythm down. I think they feel like they have seen enough potential in Shepard with some of his catches the last couple weeks, Murphy is close to returning and Shorts is starting to learn enough of the playbook and getting healthy enough to where he may be able to contribute now down the stretch

  53. Tackleblockwin Says:

    @getaclue

    Agreed.

  54. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Anyone who claims the Bucs are “in the hu t” wull bave to convince me of that.

  55. Spacebuc Says:

    LMFAO, Loubuc!

Said it before, and I’ll say it again…
    Growing pains,Y’all.
I know, it sucks right now.
It sucked for Dallas and Oakland before this season too.
Bucs are on the same path..
Once dialed in, they will be in contention for many years.

  56. Tampa Tony Says:

Funny how he will gamble with a kicker in the 2nd but not trade for a wr

  57. Patrickbucs Says:

No one we would of traded for most likely would of played on Thursday anyway. What did the Bears want for the oft-injured Jeffrey? He was tagged this year so you’re going to give up a 2 or a 3 and tag him again and pay him $13-$15 million next year if he cannot agree on a long term deal? Not sure of actual amount but what if he didn’t want to play here moving forward? Doesn’t make sense to me anyway. How many we trades were there’s?

Harvin can step in with the Bills because he’s familiar with them, their QB, and their playbook.

  58. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

And the 49ers wanted a 3rd for Torry smith lol what a joke

  59. LakeLandBuc Says:

    GO Sucs

  60. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Makes no sense to me. We have no depth at WR or RB and we do nothing. Not to mention we cut a guy who I personally believe would’ve made a good safety, hell anything is better than Conte! Guess we are playing for draft picks now. Jameis is struggling as is so we do nothing and expect him to improve with no talent around him. Smh

The direction this team is headed is totally the wrong way…confused is an understatement. We will trade a 2nd round pick for a kicker but not for a stud WR which we desperately need. F’n stupid

  61. cmurda Says:

Trade?…. Trade? You kidding me? I just hope we can win a game.

  62. unbelievable Says:

Obviously Torry Smith and Alshon Jeffrey were not worth whatever those teams wanted, be it draft picks, contract negotiations by the end of the year, plus as Getaclue said… they wouldn’t be able to have any impact for at least another 2 – 3 weeks minimum.

We’re stuck with what we have at this point.

Here’s something I was thinking about Jameis on Sunday… he started the game very well, right?

Remember the shot he took in the head when trying to dive for the TD. Maybe he got a a concussion. We know he’s a crazy competitor, would never take himself out, etc. I just can’t understand how his accuracy and ability could change that much in a game where the defense didn’t change anything it was doing. I know our run game was less successful as the game went on, but still.

    Just a thought…

  63. MadMax Says:

Just shrug and laugh…. season is over and they know it. We beat 2 crappy teams and thought we might be onto something but NO! That ugly loss to the raiders reminded us how bad we really are. We suck and are years away from even thinking of playoffs.

Is what it is….nothing we can do about it.

  64. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

    @getaclue

Someone like Marshall could’ve walked in day 1 and put in work or Landry n even Jeffries could’ve done it quickly. The other guys yes you are correct, those 3 I have to disagree with you. They can build timing but football IQ and talent would get them through and in turn get us through.

For a 2nd and maybe a later round pick for Marshall or Landry would’ve been totally worth it.

The worst thing is if Chicago doesn’t tag Jeffries again he has made it perfectly clear he wants to play for the panthers. Imagine him and Kelvin on the outside and Funchess in the slot and Olsen at TE… Unstoppable

  65. KingBuc17 Says:

You have got to be kidding, patience? People this is about building a team for the ages around your rising star QB, Jamies. It’s not going to happen in one year but injuries have really depleted our depth.
Now I would have made a trade for Enunwa, a conditional 5th and Banks as they need CB help. This would have given JW (Joe, please stop calling him America’s QB) a speed threat to grow with.

Also, I can’t believe Jason Litch didn’t make a move when in the draft he gave a 3 and 4 to move up and take a kicker. He could have gotten a receiver and safety to groom. Even if Aguayo goes on to be a Janikowski, you don’t give away those valuable picks for any kicker, you could have gotten in 6th or 7th round. Was Connor Barth that bad?

  66. AtlBucFanDan Says:

I’ve been asking that (Was Connor Barth that bad?) since the beginning of last season when they signed K. Brendza. I thought they may have learned a lesson or something…

  67. KingBuc17 Says:

    Tampa Tony Says

Great simple quote, he will gamble on a kicker with two quality picks (3&4) to take a kicker, but not work a trade to get JW someone to grow with? Unreal. I know it’s hindsight but any GM will tell you that was way to high for a kicker. You need weapons (speed)!

  68. Trubucfan22 Says:

In order for the bucs to trade for a WR, one would have to be on the trading block. I haven’t heard of any WR really being available. And even if there were a WR available, what would their price tag be? Sure we could probably loft a 6th rounder for a number 5 WR. But that doesn’t exactly help the team in any way. Or we could trade a 2nd rounder for a guy in the last year of his contract, and hope he resigns with us after the season.

I would venture to say that licht dipped his fishing pole into the waters, but no one was biting.

  69. Getaclue Says:

That being said can we all relax. If we sweep the Falcons we have a legit chance to still won the division. Packers squeaked in at 8-8 and won a Super Bowl . We were one play from playing for first place Thursday. I know it was heart breaking but it’s better than getting blown out and Winston drove us down to get ahead and the defense let us down. Still 9 games left, some team start off hot and fall off, you never know when a team is going to get hot

  70. Trubucfan22 Says:

The issue with saying that the bucs could have got Aguayo in the 6th round, is that we will never if that is true. Maybe the saints do take him at the end of the second round. They were there and also needed a kicker. Who knows. Maybe some team wouldn’t give up a 3rd round pick but a 4th. We do not know. So stop throwing it around like you have some inside scoop. We will never know where Aguayo would have gone if the bucs didn’t take him. And speculating is useless and counter productive, what’s done is done. Get over it already.

  71. Big HogHaynes Says:

Licth = ALL POWER! GO BUCS GO COLIN STEP/UP AMERICA!

  72. FLBoyInDallas Says:

They counted on an aging and injured VJax to give them one more strong season to keep some of the heat off Evans. Boy were they ever wrong. And with Murphy coming off a torn ACL they literally had no one else. This is an example of very poor planning at the NFL level. Textbook mistake by an inexperienced GM and HC. Hopefully they learn because this is the type of sh-t that costs jobs.

  73. evolvingBucfan Says:

Licht is already hoping for drafts pics it seems,

i dont see the Licht at the end of the tunnel

  74. evolvingBucfan Says:

was there not trade option for banks?

  75. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Licht is so garbage, he hs whiffed on EVERY single FA signing and then looked foolish giving money to the 3 “stars” of the team who have now seemingly spent the money without earning it. Oh I forgot that lict drafted a stud DB in round 1, oh wait now he didnt, it was that 2nd round K that he got great move, shrewd, oh wait……licht has to go

  76. VT Buc Says:

I understand not wanting to trade away draft picks for free agent signings since there is a below average history in FA signings recently, but why is there no (apparent) attempt to play to the Bucs’ strengths? Depleted D line and a rookie pass rusher that is fast and undersized? Big guys like Gholston and Ayers to bookend a 3-4 with Spence standing up next to Kwon, LVD and Smith? Yet we keep lining up in a 4-3 and getting no pressure on anything but below average O-lines.

Even if Spence is a liability in coverage, why not try to stunt him more from a standing position?

  77. America's Commenter Says:

It’s not like trading for a receiver at the trade deadline would make a huge difference on this team. It takes awhile for new receivers to pickup the offense and build chemistry with the QB, at least a whole offseason program and training camp. This team is who the experts thought they were, somewhere between 5 and 8 wins in 2016.

  78. Trubucfan22 Says:

VT buc, maybe you haven’t been watching but the bucs have lined up in different fronts. You do see LVD playing on the LOS. Which he has almost never done in past defenses. And I have seen Noah Spence stand up and pass rush. It doesn’t happen every down, but Smith is mixing it in the defense. If you want them to commit to a 3-4 full time, well that is a tough adjustment. Learning mike Smiths version of the 4-3 has been a long transition, that isn’t even complete. switching now to a 3-4 version with players unfamiliar to that defense will take a lot of getting used to. Right now I think the the bucs need to keep things fairly simple, and just execute the easy things.
