Daryl Smith talks to Joe

Will the Bucs have an unexpected hole in the starting lineup next year?

Veteran strongside linebacker Daryl Smith hasn’t missed a game this year and has shown his versatility. He’s blitzed. He’s covered. He’s come off the edge as a defensive lineman. And he has an interception and fumble recovery.

He’s also been a loud voice helping the Bucs understand Mike Smith’s defense.

But Smith, 34, has made 180 NFL starts.

Today, Joe asked Smith if he was ready to say he wants to play NFL football next year.

Smith said he won’t commit to that yet and will think about it after the season. That’s been the case for Smith the past two offseasons, he said.

Smith said there’s nothing necessarily football-related that would affect his decision. It would be more of a personal/family call.

The Bucs are paying Smith $2.5 million this season, and he’s been worth every penny as a reliable veteran and a locker room presence.

Joe hopes Smith signs up for one more year.

Note: Expecting his stock to drop after recent injury.
Maybin is currently recovering from – his third procedure on his shoulder.

Ayers, Smith, Grimes great pick ups by Licht for our defense. I would love to see Smith back again next year. Hopefully winning will make it hard for him not to come back next year.

It would be nice to have him for another year but we should definitely be looking down the road and grooming someone.
@LUV- I’d be OK with Maybin!

I have been trying to pay attention to the linebackers for the last few games and noticed that they have this dude pretty much doing everything. Blitzing, dropping into coverage, anchoring against the run, etc… He is not beating the world, just doing his job. Which is what a defense needs from some players.

Not everyone is going to impact the game every single time they step on the field. It is doing the little things right consistently that impacts the team and helps them win. Which Smith seems to do quite often. Underrated signing.

With 5 wins already, I’d venture to say no way in hell we end up with the 4th pick dude. Unless you imply a trade

  7. R.O. Says:

Just about say.. What’s that guy snorting?

  8. Rrsrq Says:

Maybe Mark Barron comes back, not

  9. Ocala Says:

Zach Cunningham from Vanderbilt in round 1 would give the Bucs arguably the best and most dominant linebacking trio in the NFL

  10. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

He means 4th round pick. And we already have Smiths replacement on the roster. Devonte Bond

  11. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Jason Licht will fill his position…with an injury prone veteran.
