Robert Ayers Says He Expects To Play

If there’s an element of the Bucs that needs a boost more than the dreadful kicking game, it’s the edge pass rush.

And here comes the cavalry, aka a one-man gang known as Robert Ayers.

The Bucs’ pass rush rush hasn’t been the same since Ayers was lost with an ankle injury during the first half of the Week 2 debacle in Arizona. Hell, against a banged up Panthers offensive line, with statue Derek Anderson at quarterback, the Bucs didn’t register one darn hit on the QB. Will Gholston and friends were not ready for prime time.

Ayers was limited in practice this week, and he jumped on his Buccaneers Radio Network show last night and offered no specific timetable early in the program. Ayers simply said he was encouraged but he also was encouraged a few days after the injury.

However, later in the show Ayers’ game of spin evaded him.

Ayers was asked about how good it is to be back home at Raymond James Stadium for a home stand.

“This is my first home game as a Buc,” Ayers said. “You know, other than preseason, my first home game. I missed the other ones. So I’m excited to be able to display my talents, you know, in front of this great Buccaneers fan base.”

Joe’s taking that as a clear indication Ayers is playing Sunday against the Raiders. It’s not as if Ayers didn’t attend the previous Bucs home games. Unless, Ayers somehow got confused, look for his “naturally pissed off” self squaring off with Raiders left tackle Donald Penn.

    I’m still concerned about his bum shoulder Steve Duemig told us about.

    Bum shoulder? Don’t nobody sit out of a game bc of a bum shoulder. What do you think this is pee-wee football? Man up and play some ball. #ballislife

    Penn and Zuttah should’ve never been allowed to leave. Dom and Rah doing a Soviet-style purge to consolidate their power while ruining the damn team. But anyway, as far as Ayers, even if he only plays 30-40% of the snaps that’ll be a big boost to this defense for sure.

    @FLBoyInDallas,

    Both played under Rah and Schiano. It was Liht and Lovie that got rid of them.

    ^You’re right, forgot about that. Those two staffs blend together in my mind because they were both just as horrible.
