“Right Back In Pro Bowl Form”

October 24th, 2016

mccoyfalconspreCue the reality-challenged Gerald McCoy bashers.

The Buccaneers’ very candid head coach had plenty to say about McCoy this afternoon at One Buc Palace.

Asked about McCoy’s impact at San Francisco while coming off a calf injury, Koetter started raving about his superhero on the defensive line.

In fact, Koetter said it was Pro Bowl McCoy on display.

“I think Gerald gets a bad rap sometimes, people don’t appreciate what he brings to the table,” Koetter said passionately.

“I mean, having coached against him, you’ve got to double team him or your guards are going to struggle to block him. Your center definitely can’t block him single. And so, he can beat a double team and when he does get singled he’s going to get penetration. He had a sack, caused a fumble – we didn’t get that fumble.

“You know, I said Gerald was going to be on a pitch count (laughs) he played 64 plays, I think he took himself out one time. A lot of the players that come back after a three-week absence, they look a little rusty out there and we had a couple guys that were in that category. Gerald did not look rusty; he looked like he was right back in Pro Bowl form. Gerald is one of those unique players that makes the other guys around him better and we were very happy to have him back.”

So there you have it. McCoy is back. Granted, the interior of the 49ers’ offensive line is nothing compared to the Raiders’, but it was a strong return by No. 93.

Lol. The GMC bashing was always misplaced at the Least. I won’t go into the other end of the Spectrum. Fans look really stupid when they dispute what the Entire NFL of Players say. I will take the Players and opposing Coaches word Any day and 3x on Sundays

  2. tmaxcon Says:

He’ll be on IR within 3 to 4 weeks.

  3. SB with Jameis Says:

And if he has an Additional 3 sacks in 4 weeks what will you say tmax?

  4. tmaxcon Says:

If they are his traditional meaningless first quarter sacks I’ll laugh. if he actually made a play that matters I’ll be the first post saying great job but I will not have to eat crow. She will get hurt again

  5. Buccfan37 Says:

I agree with SB, we won and the entire team made it happen.

  6. Chucklehead Says:

I have a hard time bashing the dude. Hes hurt a lot and maybe hasnt had the numbers some fans think he should, but hes is a beast when healthy.

  7. SB with Jameis Says:

Well considering his Sack was in the second half your argument doesn’t hold water bro. I think you are misguided by thinking that even the Best DT Ever wins games for a team. They can only play their part as best they can. So far Zero professionals call him a slacker or weak. You can choose to try and convey to people around here that you know more than the Pros but, respectfully, I am not buying it.

  8. tmaxcon Says:

Not misguided. He’s paid to be elite and is good to average. Now factor in all her boo boos and that money could be spent better elsewhere. Unless you are game changer and he is not teams can’t waste that kind of coin on a always hurt smiling ice cream man… And that garbage time sack yesterday with a 34-17 lead was indeed meaningless

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ tmaxcon

Perhaps you are in need of a “tmaxipad”…….kind of got the grumps lately…..relax….we could be 0-6…..GMC could be on IR so you couldn’t trash his weekly games….Perhaps some sort of medication or therapy would help….
I’d just like to see the happy Tmaxcon…

  10. tmaxcon Says:

I lost all respect for man after he and his fellow defenders who he was the unquestioned leader of quit on three separate coaching staffs…. You can bring all the excuses he has no help, bad schemes, whatever there is no excuse for quitting and that is exactly what he has done not once but three times. He’s a locker room cancer with a smile and a bunch of you bought the BS… Bucs will never win consistently until he is gone

  11. LargoBuc Says:

It’s funny, I’ve never heard nothing but praise for Mccoy from his peers. Saying his sacks dont count because of when they occur is laughable TMax. Show me a three tech who records a majority of their sacks on third or in the fourth.

  12. Cannon Says:

The d-line plays better when he is there. Much better.

  13. Mojiska Says:

So only sacks in the 4th quarter of a tight game count??? My guess is you will never eat crow because you will keep coming up with new rules to tell yourself he is average. Every time someone brings up a valid point you laugh it off, call him names and say that doesn’t count. It’s really getting old and starting to make you look like maybe you have something personal against him.

  14. LargoBuc Says:

Quit on three staffs? He was on IR fir Raheem after he tore his biceps, which is serious and not just some Jay Cutler bullspit. He didn’t quit on Schiano either. The team hated his guts but there was no quit, maybe a little in the finale at Nawlins but you cant use one game as evidence that someone quit.
As for Lovie, that secondary was so bad, partly due to talent, partly do to coaching. But how can you accuse anyone of quitting on Lovie if his coaching is as bad as you claim? You can’t spin it both ways.

Offenses change their blocking schemes/game plans when he is on the field. The other players not named GMC have to step up, too.

  18. Brion Says:

Keep it up guys. Ideally, we run Mcoy out of town and he plays on a team with over-rated losers like Aquino Talib and Michael Bennet. That’ll show e’em. Can’t fool smart people that live in Tampa. (Go Trump!)

He is still overrated. Koetter im suspecting a smoke screen here man. He is good not great. Come on Joe don’t be like the WWE and shove these Roman Reigns esque type guys down our throats. Btw wheres the love for Gholdston? Now this guy is a gamer.

Damn Mojiska, are you saying GMC slept with tmax’s significant other or something??

  22. Issic Haggins Says:

Great Talent but constantly over penetrate away from the play ? Fight to the ball is the game, not maximum penetration away from it. He would easily have six tackles a game if he quit over penetrating to look pretty? If he had Ayers attitude/ in game drive he would be the best d tackle in the NFL period .

Sorry, but once again this is Ignorance at it’s finest. Joe is not singing GMC’s praises. He is merely reiterating what NFL Players say. GMC is ALWAYS voted to the TOP of his position by PLAYERS. Geeeeesh how hard is it for some of you simpletons to SEE that the Players he Plays against think he is One of the Best and Special???? Just stick to you guy’s day jobs

  24. Lamarcus Says:

I agree w tmax. I seriously. Come on how many years we didn’t win w him. We can lose win or without. Last 2 games proves this. I don’t know what tape ppl are watching of Mccoy when they salivate over his talents. And locker room? His will to win? Idk about that but he will make one or two splash plays a game or 2. He gets voted to all pro this and that yea yea top 100 yea in a weak dt class around the league. Like Sapp said he going to get double teamed by default cuz of position he plays.

  25. Ind.Bucforlife77 Says:

GMC did play well, as did W.G. And I seen N.Spence get off the ball fast to flush Afro man out of the pocket. I see a great pick in N.Spence, and believe towards the 3 quarter everyone will know him, 2017 will be a big year for Spence. How about HayJude on that blitz that Cap never seen coming. Perfectly Squared hit and rang his bell. Great play calling by M. Smith. If he wants to be a head coach next year, he will have some choices, as I believe that’s how we got J. Hayes to come to Tampa. When C.M., R.A and others get healthy, we all could be in for something we haven’t seen in a long while, Go Buc’s

Simpletons? Haha. That’s funny. No actually it’s more complexed than that. Watch Joey Bosa yes Bosa. A new guy. A true difference maker

  27. Lamarcus Says:

And no I have nothing against McCoy. But when we get ” alley beating” I tend to call out our biggest stars. I bet anyone he won’t be a buc too long.

P.s. we should beat teams like 49ers and Panthers. Simple as that.

  28. Doctor Stroud Says:

I agree with IH that GMC needs to develop an attitude like Ayers (or even Sapp) but only to the extent of holding his fellow defensive players accountable. Sapp rode his teammates hard when they didn’t execute, and that is partly why those defenses excelled. That is just not GMC’s personality, and he is not going to change at this point. Still, the defense is better with than without him. We need all hands on deck for the game against the Raiders.

    ………………………….
GMC has been voted in the “Top 100 ‘Players” every year in the last 5 years by Players! Players! They get paid to PLAY! Their word means a great deal more to me than some disgruntled Bucs fans, most who haven’t been here before 2000. If you have been here from the beginning as I have you would understand.
Also Defensive Tackles DO NOT WIN GAMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

I have said if McCoy had a legitimate pass rushing threat to take the heat of of him, he would be incredible.
Dwight Freeny was to be had, but we allowed Atlanta to grab him.
I am glad we have GMC back

  31. tmaxcon Says:

    Fan boys are hilarious…

  32. SB with Jameis Says:

Nobody, Not One of you can give a good reason why Your Opinion is more Valid than the Players that face GMC every year.
That’s ok we should all just buy your reasoning over theirs. I have YET to hear anyone dispute this.

  33. SB with Jameis Says:

Actually not as hilarious as people who think they know more than the pros tmax. Carry on tho

  34. SB with Jameis Says:

I build Homes for a living. To hear a waiter tell me how to build something is HILARIOUS!

  35. Capt. Blighe Says:

49ers announced they will be willing trade Torrey Smith.

    Get to work Licht #DOYOURJOB!

  36. SB with Jameis Says:

I can buy this in Only one way Blighe. SF has zero QBs but he couldn’t hack it at Balt either. Shep and Hump will soon be Household names with JW leading the way

  37. LargoBuc Says:

It’s okay SB. He has nothing so he resorts to calling ppl “fanboys”, which is just him admiting he is wrong.

  38. LargoBuc Says:

We could make good use of Torey Smith’s speed.Smith is the burner, Evans is the muscle while Shep, Hump and Brate are consistent.

  39. SB with Jameis Says:

Yeah Largo but I hear the Eagles are hot on Smith

  40. LargoBuc Says:

Joe, why is my comment awaiting mod?

  41. LargoBuc Says:

True, I hope Licht can pull it off w/o giving up too much.

  42. SB with Jameis Says:

IMO I believe in Jameis to turn Sheppard and Hump into threats. Who ever heard of TY Hilton, Austin Collie and the likes without Peyton. With a good run game and a stout Defense an elite QB can turn average WRs into stars. JW is not elite yet, but the ingredients are All There. I would take Smith but not give much and we don’t have alot to give.

  43. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Same old crap from the same idiot over and over again. It’s much less fun when you re-use the same stupid crap every time. “Blah blah blah, give me 5 game changing, game winning, all world, plays he’s had, blah blah blah.” What an idiotic argument. Even though he’s beat Atlanta twice, in back to back seasons, both on the road, and both on 4th down to end the game, that isn’t’ enough. This d-bag wants him to create a sack, recover the fumble, and return it for a TD – all on the last possession of the game. That is literally his argument against McCoy. LMAO. Keep it coming!!!

  49. SB with Jameis Says:

Hey, at least we have us some JW3 and some VH3, amiright?

  50. LargoBuc Says:

That fumble forced by Jude and recovered my Mccoy helped put keep that game out of reach. Had Mccoy not played, who knows if anyone on that line has the awareness to recover it. It was a heads up play. And that’s the difference between having a player like GMC and some average guy.
By the benchmarks some posters have set, a majority of the top defensive tackles are average, going by their logic.

  52. DB55 Says:

VH3! Gotta say the kid is impressive. Sitting here watching tbvden and this kid is good. Tackles like ronde, covers like Talib, hits like hmm idk but he brings a stick. I like’em.

Most surprising, teams don’t test him. Weird right? Rookie CBs always get tested and tried. KB got 70 yards on him and that’s prob the most yardage he’s given up all season. Idk haven’t looked at stats or anything just imo based on his play.

I was wrong SB I thought he’d get manhandled and it’s the exact opposite. Great chit man!!!

  53. Mike Johnson Says:

Great to have McCoy back. The defense is always much more aggressive with his playing and presence. Gonna need all of his effort and then some against the high flying Raiders.

  54. SB with Jameis Says:

Yeah DB. He has done better than I thought so far. I thought he would go for the picks more. He hasn’t. Part of me wishes he would, but he has yet to give up the big play so I should take that over Last Year…………SHIVERS………… Just Imagine if we could somehow land Jalen Tabor in the draft next yr and put those two back together. Tabor already has 2 Pick 6s this yr along with another pick this yr.

  55. DB55 Says:

Why must you take such a dumb stance?

    ———-
I seek the truth my brother! Seek and you shall find. Plus, I don’t like a certain poster very much so I like to counter his efforts. Lol. It entertains me quite frankly.

Tape don’t lie bro, idk what to tell you.

  56. DB55 Says:

Well he caused an int against KB on mnf. Darryl Smith caught it. Let’s see if he covers Cooper this week and how he does. He might actually be the real deal, who knows?

  57. SB with Jameis Says:

DB, you and I have been Allies despite our collegiate alliances for about 5 years now. We are Bucs fans first in This forum. All is Good right now bro despite the slow start. Let us look forward to a Home win that I Hope you get to see personally. If we beat Oakland then it is On!

  58. DB55 Says:

Going to the TNF game vs ATL.

  59. BigHogHaynes Says:

  60. SB with Jameis Says:

Awesome Bro!! If we beat Atl again then ALL is possible!

  61. LargoBuc Says:

Atlanta gave us everything week one and we still beat them in their house. At this point we have to be in their heads a bit. A psychological edge never hurts.
And as far as Oakland goes, their offense is good but so is Atlanta’s. If Jameis stays consistent and is continuosly backed up by this running game, we can win. Won’t be easy but it’s a great chance to get something going at home. Finally. Go Bucs!

  62. SB with Jameis Says:

Yeah Largo and let’s not forget that Oakland’s Run Defense is 2nd Worst in the League behind SF’s
What is it with these California teams. Are the all sissies against the Rush???

  63. SB with Jameis Says:

Hey Joe, you said that to be at Least 2 and 3 at the Bye was a goal. How do you feel at 3 and 3 Out of the Bye? Can we win our first Home Game????

HE Doesnt over penetrate its just the other 3 guys dont so they are 3 steps back. when ayers is in you see the difference cause they both are getting up field and penetrating together.. you should be on the other guys for not penetrating, i guess if he didnt you would be complaining he never has any push.

It is like tellin SAPP he dont rush the quarterback and use god given speed, spp had Rice

Sapp had booger , Marcus jones (13 sacks) and chidi my point is he had a crew that rushed up field and created pressure.

They knock McCoy for being to quick off ball and penetrating fast. Should be on the other guys for not doing the same.

Yet for me this defense has been playing well since Denver game.

  70. McBuc Says:

That old defense had great players at every level as well. GMC has not played on a team that good. You guys are fooling ourself that think he is average.

This makes McCoy a GOOD DT…
The point is McCoy makes STAR money…GREAT DT Money…How many times did you hear his name Sunday..Except for at the end of the beat down NONE..

Look t McCoy’s first game when Ayers was in the Game demanding everyone play… McCoy looked Great.. Getting in the back field Knocking down passes

    BINGO!! GO BUCS SUNDAY!!!!!

  73. D-Rome Says:

Some of you people truly make me laugh when it comes to Gerald McCoy. I hear so much about “splash plays” but what DT in the NFL makes splash plays. He has three sacks this year. The same amount as Aaron Donald and he’s managed to do that while playing two less games?

Name five splash plays Suh has made in his career. Stomping on opponents doesn’t count. Name five splash plays Aaron Donald has made in his career. The league leader for sacks by a defensive tackle is Kerry Hyder and he has five. Right now GMC is tied for 4th for sacks by a DT. Some of the mouth breathers around here act like you expect him to get pick 6’s every other game.

Gerald McCoy is currently 6th among DTs for sacks among active players and three of those guys have been playing since 2004. Since he has come into the NFL he’s 3rd in sacks among DTs. He’s 2nd among DTs in passes defended since he came into the NFL. He has far and away more passes defended than Geno Atkins

If the Bucs didn’t pay top dollar for McCoy someone else would have and there would have been teams lining up. Why is that so hard for you guys to understand? So he’s not Warren Sapp. Who in the NFL since Sapp retired has been as good as him? Sapp was a once in a generation talent.

As Tkras put it best a couple of months ago: Don’t be that idiot fan who thinks the defense is better off without Gerald McCoy.

  74. THETRUTH Says:

D-Rome. You hit it on the head

These same guys were yelling for Mike Evans to be cut or traded cause he dropped balls last year even with 1000 plus yards receiving. Couch coaches

  75. unbelievable Says:

    Well said D-Rome.

And the fact of the matter is stats like sacks only tell part of the story. If you’re swallowing up 2 or sometimes even 3 offensive guys, you’re creating lanes for other guys on the line to get sacks, tackles, etc.

There’s no stat for that but players are only as effective as the rest of the guys around them. It’s called the ultimate team sport for a reason.

  76. DB55 Says:

Well if Tkras (lmao) said so then …..rotfl
