“Always Trying To Be Superman”

Former Bucs QB says Jameis wants to be Superman.

Former Bucs QB says Jameis wants to be Superman.

Pro Bowler Jameis Winston may be America’s Quarterback, but he isn’t yet a superhero.

Nor is he Captain America — yet (that’s Roger Staubach). But his zeal to be on that level of signal-callers is what may be dooming his development.

That’s the word from former Bucs quarterback Trent Dilfer. Now an BSPN talking head, Dilfer, who won a Super Bowl with the Crows, is tight with Jameis and like Herm Edwards, Dilfer and Jameis’ relationship goes back to when Jameis was in high school. He is one of Jameis’ go-to people when the young Bucs quarterback is seeking advice and knowledge outside of One Buc Palace.

Dilfer was working the Bucs-Stinking Panthers game and shared a private conversation he had with Jameis after their stand-up for the BSPN viewing audience following the game, as Dilfer detailed on the “Ron and J.P. Show” heard locally on WDAE-AM 620.

“I told Jameis off-camera that I was really proud of his patience,” Dilfer said. “I told him, ‘I know that was hard because you are always trying to be Superman out there. Tonight it really looked like you had the mentality to stay patient and stay close to the vest and trust yourself. You are one of the best late-game quarterbacks, young quarterbacks we have seen.’ Which he did. It was a really well-executed two-minute drill.

“If [the Bucs] want to win more games than they lose this year, this is how [Jameis] is going to have to play.”

Dilfer also explained how early in the game, while Jameis was off-target, the misses were not awful throws. Additionally, Dilfer loved how the Bucs imposed their will upon the Stinking Panthers with a ground game, which he thought intelligently set up Jameis was some solid downfield throws later in the second half.

Can I just say that I’m SICK and FREAKIN’ tired of athletes calling themselves Superman. It’s the most tired, cliche nickname in all of sports… and then it just invites the follow-up cliche when they screw up, “Well, I guess that’s his KRYPTONITE! Heh heh heh,” as if making that connection between Superman and Kryptonite is a comedic leap of Carlin proportions.

If JW wants to be a superhero, I suggest he becomes Green Arrow because, quite frankly, most of the dregs on the Bucs roster have consistently “failed this city.”

  2. Turd Koetter Says:

    “Big Bootie” is his Kryptonite?

  3. Q Says:

Hes not trying to be superman trent dilder , he is trying to extend plays ,hes a competitor

  4. Dr. Lob Says:

Patience for Winston means to not let him throw the ball as much. He needs to work on his accuracy and decision making. Mondays game was a great example on how he missed open receivers. He made some great throws at times but he has to be more consistent or we will still be looking for that franchise quarterback. I have always heard that when a quarterback in inaccurate in college it usually continues in the NFL, lets hope he can correct this.

  5. Chucklehead Says:

Has Jameis ever called himself Superman or a super hero? I think that stems more from the media in describing his will and determination. Can’t put that on Jameis because hes trying to be better.

  6. The Buc Realist Says:

Just imagine how he could play in this defense with a pass rush!!!!!

  7. The Buc Realist Says:

    Sorry, wrong thread!!!

Bucs needs a WR TE and they just need to be a solid #2 options!!! If they could just spread other defenses a little to get the running game and ME13 a little space will greatly help this offense run with efficiency!!!!

Restraint is key in all sports.

A golfer has to lay up or lag a putt once in a while.
A baseball player has to shorten his bat occasionally
A boxer has to wait for his opening

Jameis will learn this and become more comfortable with it…..Koetter is having to lead the way…..that’s not easy either.

  9. Kobe Faker Says:

This is why radio and sports media sucks

Reading some of these posts is mind numbing. Great quotes from differ. Jw try’s to do to much and needs to be reigned in occasionally. He’s a young qb and already is a keeper.

  11. LakelandBuc Says:

I never heard of SUPERMAN going 8-13 against his rivals. Keep your mouth shut and focus on your craft, maybe then you can actually win in this league. Russell Wilson has took his team to the playoffs every season he has been in the NFL, he goes out and get the job done and keep his mouth shut. Let your play do your talking..SMDH

  12. Bob in Valrico Says:

    agree with Lakeland in that
Jameis needs to lead by example and show his leadership on the field.Stop[ worrying about the Why’s and focus on footwork and accuracy. When that improves ,with his intangibles he has a ton of potential. Also it’s 60 minute game, he needs to figure out why he is starting so slow and correct it.

Always be yourself. Unless you can be Batman ….then be Batman!

    LOL, lay off the sauce!

I think we all need to stop calling JW America’s QB until he starts playing like Brady. Brady has different WR’s and TE’s every year it seems and often leads the league in wins and performance. JW has been good in one game this year and a handful last year. Still don’t know how he made the pro bowl over Cousins, but I love that we have him for our future. He will get more accurate and is a natural leader, just far too inconsistent, right now. He has happy feet in a bad way right now and until he settles and gets in a rhythm, he will be a below average QB.

    That too though Realist…lol

Americas QB , all time dumb nickname. It’s not a nickname when only one person calls you it. He hasn’t earned the right for that.

  18. BigStinky Says:

People should STOP trying to make Jameis Winston out to be something he is NOT. Saying he is trying to be Superman or calling him America’s Quarterback is a little over the top. Cam already thinks he’s Superman and Tom Brady has been America’s Quarterback for quite some time now. JW has done NOTHING to deserve either of those nicknames. Does he have potential? Maybe. There is NOT much difference between what he has done AND what Glennon has done. Mike’s stats are just as good as Jameis’ (or better) and everyone wants to get rid of MG8 and make excuses for JW. Their stats are SO close it is scary. Why does Jameis get so much support and Mike get tossed to the side? They both have the same completion percentage and the same amount of games w/out an INT. MG8 got sacked more and isn’t as mobile but stat-wise is better. I am sure someone will have him in for a tryout next year since everyone thinks JW is SO good. I would have liked to see what Mike would have been able to do in this offense at some point. I just hope Jameis’ numbers get better this year or we wasted a #1 pick on him. We already had a QB with better numbers in his first 18 1/2 games AND hope we are NOT wasting more time on another QB. Mike MAY be a better QB and we wouldn’t even know it. Go BUCS!

  19. Chris Says:

Careful Big Stinky, that’s sacreligious in these parts. They like him better because he’s local, has a personality and can make all the throws. Of course, he doesn’t progress through his reads, locks on to Miie Evans like he did his favorite receiver at FSU, that Gruden pointed out on his WB show, throws too many picks, holds on to the ball too long, etc, but in this forum, he does no wrong

  20. Doctor Stroud Says:

Superman? Not with those uniforms. America’s (2nd Most Hated) Game-Manager Jameis Winston will need more weapons around him, and let’s hope AC/DC-loving GM Jason Licht does a better job making sure that he has them.
