Why Was Brandon Marshall Counseling ASJ?

September 28th, 2016

asjStunning news coming out of The Big Apple, where troubled former Bucs tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins now plays for the Jets.

Per Newsday, future Hall of Fame receiver Brandon Marshall began counseling ASJ when he still was a member of the Buccaneers.

“I’ve been talking to Austin for a week now, even before this even happened,” Marshall said Tuesday. “When I saw what he was going through I reached out to him. We’ve been talking for a while. He is a great talent. When I heard yesterday we claimed him I was like ‘This is God sent. If he needs me, I am there. I’ve already connected him with the right people in the city if he needs them.”

Umm, so what was Seferian-Jenkins “going through” before he was arrested for DUI that was so evident Brandon Marshall reached out to him?

Now that’s a hell of a question!

In the story linked above, Marshall says he has a bond with ASJ and is so glad he’s on the Jets.

good luck to the kid… not sure new york is the best option to solber up and get your crap together but good luck

  2. Birdman Says:

    Alcoholism.
Does no one want to say it or is everyone just dumb af?

  3. Mitch Says:

I have always believed ASJ was intelligent athletic and had all the intangibles except for his mental health. I think Brandon Marshall reached out because Marshall has previously & publicly dealt with his own mental health issues. I think he sees some of the same stuff going on in ASJ’s life. Best of luck to the kid.

  4. Lamarcus Says:

Why wasn’t a buccaneer teammate counseling him? Oh no leaders out side of Winston.

  5. BucinJax Says:

Birdman, his alcoholic problems could being triggered by mental health issues.

this loss killed me… just beat me the f up… I may need brandon marshall’s advice lol.. Anyhow, any update how Glennon is performing with the surface. Any delays in getting Jaboo everything he needs. How’s is his gestures coming? Good Technique and speed is important to the success of the bucs. A good positive glennon story always cheers me up after a loss. i may have finally lost it but I am pining for a glennon story.

I’m not surprised asj did not wanna be here at all!!!!!! I don’t think he liked the heat or Evans. He new he would be the 3rd or 4th target if that. When u got Evans brate Humphries sims and Jackson that needs the ball. One thing I will say about him is that he can catch that’s all. The jets are perfect for him. He will be getting the ball thrown his way because the jets are average offensively.. He reminds me of Kellen Winslow jr. I wish him in marshall the best because they both have mental issues like many Americans

  8. BucinJax Says:

Lamarcus, maybe they were. And, maybe no one had his complex type of problems. Brandon Marshall his own problems, recognized ASJ’S, and reached out to him. We still need to see if ASJ will listen to anyone much less be able to concur his own demons.

  9. BucinJax Says:

    Conquere

  10. Kevin Says:

He will be a stud just like blount, barron, talib, bennett, ….you get the point

  11. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

kevin the common denominator in the poor management of the bucs has been the owners, throw some money at mckay and get him back here to show scouts how to recognize talent and then draft and also grab FAs because licht sucks

  12. Mikadeemas Says:

Maybe Marshall counseled him on how to get cut, so the Jets could claim him.

  13. Miko Says:

@Mikadeemas….yeah, exactly what i think. He couldn’t handle sitting behind Brate, so he found a way to get a new team…

  14. Waterboy Says:

May have the same borderline personality disorder that Marshall has and struggled with early in his career before getting the help he needed.

  15. BigHogHaynes Says:

What a mess we are making! Somebody please get a grip…….and quick!!

  16. Joseph Mamma Says:

BucinJax, his mental health issues could be triggered by a chemical imbalance.

  17. Bucsfanman Says:

tmaxcon is calling for a Glennon story?!!! Get him some help and QUICK!

I wish ASJ the best. Hopefully it’s something that he can work out.

Why wasn’t a buccaneer teammate counseling him?

This is a very good question and I believe it speaks to the issue of culture at One Buc. Coach Koetter is right about the culture with the team. Like the old expression “there’s something in the water” it isn’t much different than Koetter’s statement of “it’s hard to figure out what it is.” There’s something about this team that goes way beyond record. Talib and Blount are the most notable players in recent memory but there have been others.

I really believe the issues goes beyond wins and losses. Over the past four years the Saints have had only one winning season yet they don’t have a culture of losing.

Maybe some were!!!! Chug, Chug, Chug Chug!!!!!!!!!!

Its time to change the culture!!!! and stop the few that bring down the many!!!!

  20. jerseybuc Says:

Getting kicked out of practice, not knowing the plays, maybe the kid had some mental issues behind his lack of preparation who knows. Marshall has turned his life around by recognizing and finding the proper medication to help himself so perhaps ASJ has a mentor that can help him. If this is the case it would be surprising that the Bucs were unaware of any pre existing condition.
My take on him all along was that he was just a knucklehead but this may explain why this guy hasn’t ascended as we all thought he should have.

  21. 813bucboi Says:

ASJ was a knuckle head but dirk let his emotions get in the way of being professional and a leader….you don’t just release him…not in the position we’re in….you make him inactive for a few weeks….fine him…during that time you try to trade him…if you cant trade him than just make him block when he’s on the field…..make him earn passes but you’ve got to get something for a former 2nd round pick….

all of this culture change talk is BS….sunday I saw a team fight to the end and refused to lose until the hc made a coaching 101 meltdown….this team seems more mentally tougher with players like jameis and kwon taking on more of the leadership role….sunday that team found a way to win but the hc and dc found a way to screw it up….simple as that….GO BUCS!!!!

This is a perfect fit. Brandon Marshall is who he needed. Not to mention a fanbase with a brain.
    ——————————
Seriously, some of you people are disgraceful. You have no idea what it means to be a teammate and look out for your own. Brandon is a god send for ASJ and just like everyone else you’ve run off the team he too will be a major contributor elsewhere.

“I’ve been talking to Austin for a week now, even before this even happened… When I saw what he was going through I reached out to him. We’ve been talking for a while.”

That IS an interesting statement Joe. I too wonder what ASJ was “going through” earlier in the week prior to getting popped for the DUI that Marshall was in contact with him about.

I’m guessing that ASJ is facing a suspension from the league for the DUI? – or at least a heightened level of scrutiny in its mandatory drug and alcohol program if its only his 1st “offense”? Anyone know the details on that side of it?

  25. safeflt1 Says:

Best of luck to the kid and hopefully he turns his life around and gets the help that he needs form someone. As for the other comments on him getting “help” from the Bucs…none of of have any idea what took place behind closed doors at OBP. Nobody except the folks there know what help was offered or extended, so lets not pass judgement since we don’t know!

  26. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The DUI is obviously troubling….but the dashcam video is very damaging because it shows he’s an idiot.
At least he’s gone to a market where an automobile isn’t necessary.

As far as Marshall speaking to ASJ before the incident and him ultimately ending up being a teammate…. Doe’s anyone else find this coincidence interesting?

  27. R.O. Says:

I would be shocked, SHOCKED!! If BM makes it to the HOF. I don’t believe he is worthy…

  28. Upthegut Says:

    Tampering ??????

  29. Mike Johnson Says:

Brandon Marshall was probably telling ASJ..Get the hell out of Tampa Bay!!!

  30. Lamarcus Says:

We need leaders not talent all pro dt. McCoy should go. I’m sorry. We need more dogs on this team. I see no leaders other than Winston. Ayers could be that but wtf is McCoy doing other than his own job? Let him go.

  31. wesley Says:

You just know he’s going to have a great career, he is after all an ex-buc.
