Will his defense be smothering?

Joe is damned nervous about this game Sunday between the Rams and the Bucs. With all the injuries to the Bucs offense and the Rams having a ferocious defense, Joe is not sleeping well.

Leave it to Pat Kirwan and his Real Football Talk website to deliver honest X’s and O’s about this game.

Kirwan, joined by his SiriusXM NFL Radio co-host, former NFL quarterback Jim Miller, and former defensive coordinator Greg Robinson, look at many angles of offense vs. defense — and vice versa — for both teams.

Each predicts a one-score game and the panel is split 2-1 on who wins. You can watch it all right here.

Another beatdown tomorrow at home will be the beginning of the familiar death spiral.

  2. DB55 Says:

I had more confidence that we would beat the cards in AZ than I do about us beating the Rams at home.

  3. Buccfan37 Says:

It will take an all out concentrated effort for the Bucs to win. And then some. Go Bulls!

  4. Tbbucs3 Says:

If the Rams put up 20+ points on us, I will be on “shoulda hired Jim Swartz” bandwagon. He’s already turned the Eagles defense around completely.

  5. Ndog Says:

Dang this town is full of chicken sh*ts, scared of the freaking Rams?! And the comment above about us having a better shot on the road against a pissed off team that lost in NFC championship game last than the Rams is laughable. We might lose but are you kidding me with being scared or nervous about any team espically the flipping Rams at home! You guys make me sick and this is why we have NO home field advantage, cause we have a bunch of scared bithch*s in the stands.Ridiculous! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Last Buc Fan Says:

No way we loose this game.

  7. unbelievable Says:

    Ndog preaching truth right there.

    Softest fans in the NFL.

Worst home field in the NFL.

I used to scream at other Bucs fans when I lived in FL and attended home games. Get loud people! Geeze, it’s only your freaking team!

  8. Last Buc Fan Says:

    What he said👆🏾

  9. DB55 Says:

    Ndog

I feel your passion. Emotions are getting the best of us for sure. I see this as a bigger challenge than last week bc we’ve lost some of the best players to injury and stupidity. But if you think the game is in the bag I guess that’s all we need to know. Someone get Vegas on the line a bet the mortgage on the Bucs over the Rams. #easymoney

  10. Joe Says:

I had more confidence that we would beat the cards in AZ than I do about us beating the Rams at home.

Same. This is not a good matchup for the Bucs. At. All.

The Bucs offense is beat up. If the Cardinals can shut down the Bucs, imagine what the Rams will do?

  11. DB55 Says:

Let’s not get carried away now. I’m a reasonable man but this heat is making me absolutely crazy.

  12. DB55 Says:

    Thank you Joe.

  13. ptwalk Says:

The truth is, It’s not the Rams that people are afraid of, it’s that our team won’t show up. I believe we show up big and whip some ass, injuries or not.

  14. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

I’ve been saying since before the season that my expectations for this season are the playoffs. This is the kind of game that playoff team wins. Home opener against a team that can’t throw the ball? Yea, this is a must win game if we are going to make the playoffs.

  15. orlbucfan Says:

I sure as whatever ain’t losing sleep over the LA Sheep. Jeff Fisher is a playoff proven HC. Fact. Both Dirk Koetter and Mike Smith coached the Dixie Chicks together into playoff teams. Fact. We’re finally playing in Tampa Bay. Fact. Fisher has to fly his team cross-country to play 3 time zones ahead of when they normally function. Fact. Both teams have injuries. Fact. Joe will post Countdown Clock tomorrow so we’ll win. BETTER be a fact! Go Mighty Bucs!! Fact.

  16. Dooshlarue Says:

The beat down in the desert didn’t suprise me although it was a little worse than I thought it would be.
However, we need to play the Rams like it’s the freaking superbowl and get our heads out of our asses.
We are not all of a sudden a bad team even with our injuries, we just have to rise up to the challenge and play smart, hard and fast and we will be 2-1 and all the fair-weathered fans can start talking about how we’re great and going to the superbowl.

Hell, they might even let NOS-BOS out of the sanitarium.

    Go Bucs!

  17. The Buc Realist Says:

The Injury bug has not been kind to the Bucs. Taking down some big names out of our line-ups!!! I really do not think that the Bucs can play their game and win. Coach Smitty and Head Coach Koetter are really going to have to dig deep into the bag, and come up with some of the unexpected!!!! They will have to cover up the shallow depth on this team, which we already knew!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!

  18. Clodhopper Says:

We’ve seen nothing to make us think this is an easy or even expected win. What have they done so far? Beat a team we swept last year and damn near let them scream You Like That!!?? Then get clobbered just like the last four years. They’re the same old Bucs until they ain’t. This game can be a big step in the right direction. Like Bonzaii says, you have to earn your props. They haven’t earned spit yet.

  19. Broy34 Says:

“Of the cardinals can shut down the Bucs imagine what the Rams can do” joe what the hell are you on. The CARDINALS ARE ELITE AND CAME OUT PISSED AR HOME. –imagine what the Rams can do. Back to pawloski’s podcast if I’m Gnna read that malarkey and yeah u people r absolutely moronic. Week 3 had a bad game and opening up at home y’all are scared s-less. Gimme a god damn break. Can’t change the culture without the fans and I support better from upstate New York. Pathetic. Pathetic

  20. richbucsfan Says:

    Rams 23-Bucs 3

  21. Joe Says:

    Broy34:

If you are p!ssed at Joe for writing the ugly truth, better be sitting down listening to Justin.

  22. KCool Says:

Does anyone know why Smith sits up in the box? It would seem smarter for him to be down on the field, you know, like a normal coach.

  23. stpetebucsfan Says:

If we buy into all the old NFL axioms like the game is won in the trenches…On one side of the ball we’re good to go…sadly our OL faces the best DT in the game and the entire Rams DL is very good.

Still aside from Doug we haven’t lost anything on Offense. We have to hope Rodgers is at least the competent NFL pro he seems to be. Everything else is go.
We won’t miss ASJ because we have Brate and Myers and ASJ has never been an impact player here. Plenty of targets and playmakers.

Our D is where the injuries are most frightening because we lost Jack Smith and Ayers in a part of our game we can least afford to…edge rushers. We have to hope that Noah Spence grows up overnight and blows up.

I’ve seen Vegas lines anywhere from the Bucs giving 3 to 5 points. That’s about where I would peg it. Game could come down to Aguayo. How do we feel about that?

  24. Cobraboy Says:

I don’t know if this team can respond to a team physically punches them in the mouth.

Which is exactly what I expect the Rams to do: run the ball down the Bucs throat, and bludgeon the running game and Winston. IF the team shows up.

I don’t feel good about this game at all.

  25. venbuc Says:

Losing last week to AZ was one thing…if Winston shows up we win. It all keys on if he shows up!

  26. mdsbuc Says:

Some may think Jeff Fisher a bad coach, but he has had his way with us over the years.

I remember in 1995, his first full year as head coach in Houston, the last year there before the Oilers moved to Nashville. The Astrodome was a mess and fans in Houston weren’t showing up, partially due to the impending move the next year by the team, and because the Oilers were sporting a pathetic 2-5 record.

Our Bucs headed into the dome, under Sam Wyche as HC, looking much better at 5-3. Most Buc fans were quite confident of a Buccaneer win there. Fisher and the Oilers kicked our butts, 19-7. Unforgettable….

  27. mdsbuc Says:

Damn I wish we could edit after posting. Proof positive above!

  28. mdsbuc Says:

…and btw, Fisher’s all time record vs. the Bucs is 8-1.

  29. BigStinky Says:

The outcome of this game is simple to figure out, it ALL comes down to how good Jameis plays. Will he play like he did in Atlanta or play like he did in Arizona? He started out both games not being able to hit a pass 25 yards or longer. In Atlanta, he started throwing short passes for MOST or ALL of the first half and got into a rhythm. In Arizona, he threw deep early and often and NEVER got into a rhythm. He couldn’t even hit a slant pattern in the 4th quarter without throwing it high. Wonder if Dirk will EVER figure out that JW needs to throw short passes until he gets into the game? NOT driving 2 hours to watch Winston play like chit and drive home pissed off. Would rather watch it on TV and save my money until he gets better. Hope he finally does get more accurate and justify us spending a number one pick on him. Tired of rooting for a team that picks top 10 in the draft EVERY year. Go BUCS!

  30. Guzzie Says:

Does anyone trust Jameis after last week he seems to play well against bad defenses, good defenses overwhelm him, hopefully that changes soon cause this Rams defense isn’t as good as Denver or Carolina, so 1-4 looks like real possibility

  31. Destro44 Says:

Quick reality check on the three Rams. Yes they shut down the Seahawks, owners of the worst online in the NFL. It’s a fact. The same Rams team that gave up 28 to the 9ers juggernaut offense in week one. Not exactly the ’85 Bears.

On the we should have hired Swartz crowd. First Philly has completely different personnel. And look at the 2 train wrecks they played. The Browns and Bears are two of the worst offenses in the league.

Stop acting like you think you will be discovered as the next great GM and try getting behind you team.

  32. Tbbucs3 Says:

Destro44, when Jim Swartz coached the Bills they had one of the most underrated defenses in the NFL, as soon as Rex Ryan takes over look at the result.

  33. Destro44 Says:

Tbbucs3, I agree Swartz is a good DC but he isn’t a miracle worker either. Bills defense also had different personnel, Mario Williams, Kiko Alonso, and several others that aren’t there from 2 years ago.

  34. godzilla13 Says:

After facing Matt Ryan and Carson Palmer it should be a better match-up for our defense. We all know what Case Keenum (14-17 234, 2 TD, 158 QB rating) did to us last year but how many of you realize that their receivers went 14-16 87.5% completion rate?. The Rams commit a lot of penalties as well. Pressure and blitz Keenum, cover their receivers, no turnovers and control our penalties and we will win this game.
