“Trust Me. They’re Not Just Standing There In Cover 2 Or Cover 3”

Dirk Koetter explains today’s trickery at One Buc Palace.

Lots of disguise rolled out from the Buccaneers’ defense today at practice.

It confused America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, a few times. Imagine what it did for Joe and fans in the stands.

Of course, that’s a great thing in the world of the Bucs — an unpredictable defense after two years of predictability. The reason junk QBs like Case Keenum and Derek Anderson, among other examples, were able to carve up Lovie Smith’s defense was because it was so damn easy to figure out.

Mike Smith has a very different approach.

“It’s not the easiest thing. Trust me. They’re not just standing there in Cover 2 or Cover 3,” Dirk Koetter explained today, while discussing the challenges his offense is facing.

Koetter explained that movement among the defensive line and linebackers is all calculated and difficult to process.

“They were doing some crazy disguises today. I mean, they were doing a lot with their front,” Koetter said. “So the quarterback’s first job, the quarterback and the center are trying to get the protection straight. And they were giving us some walk-around looks today. It’s really, we saw a couple of snaps of it yesterday, but when you start getting unique fronts and walk-around fronts, those are always a challenge. Then after you get the protection set, then the clock’s winding down, you got to snap it. Then he’s got to see the coverage and make a good decision. It’s really good work for us.”

Joe’s a little tired and won’t pile on the Lovie regime this afternoon. The above quotes tell a better story than Joe every could.

The other obvious aspect of this new and improved defense…is that it’s going to be a great challenge for a second year QB who is going to see perhaps more in practice than he will on an average Sunday.

  2. dusthty rhothdes Says:

Rookie Marcus Mariotta thought he was playing against Illinois week 1 not a nfl team w a superbowl coach

I was sold when I heard “we will be gameplan specific”. Imagine that.

I expect a heavy dosage of Dougie when we face Denver and KC.

the legend of coach my scheme has been EXPOSED!!!!

Soon the sheep will know what the few were begging about all of the last 2 years!!!! I hope that when we start seeing exciting football again that those with agenda’s will become just Buc fans again!!!! For now, the truth has ridden to the surface!!! and the faint of heart and fool-hardy need to hide or start thinking of new screen names again!!!!

Because just like lovie’s reputation, This Class is OVER!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!

I am thankful we had Lovie. Without him we may not have Jameis and Coach K. Thank you Lovie for your ineptitude.

  8. Nate Says:

We are going to rock the nfc south this year… Sean Payton will be fired this year.. Cam will look human.. and Atlanta will have no defense.. its ours for the taking!

  9. K2 Says:

Are you saying the pieces on a chessboard are movable? Wow! Strategy…what’s that?

  10. Pawel Says:

Dirk saying they are not just standing there, should let everyone hint that is what he saw with Lovies defense.

  11. LargoBuc Says:

Im really enjoyimg this new defense. I can’t wait to see it in action. To think Falcon OC Kyle Shanahan struggled with Lovies defense, wait til he has to go against this! Aggressive play, complicated line shifts, week one can not get here soon enough!

  12. Buccfan37 Says:

These ain’t last years Bucs, that’s for sure. Coaching and attitude are like light years ahead. These Bucs are going to beat down the cellar door in grand fashion.

  13. Waterboy Says:

Agree with Noneya on the Lovie hate.

  14. BigHogHaynes Says:

There’s nothing new under the sun, this team will be playing a new scheme on defence this year, will it work remains to be seen. FACTS!)

Your last sentence was succinctness at it’s best! Bravo

Realist you are such a clown. There are no sheep up here accept you. You are Joes puppet because all he has to do is is suggest something even close to Lovie and you’re up here with your schpiel. He uses a nifty name and you run with it like the drone you are. All Joe gotta do is say jump and like the little lap dog you are you bark and leap.

All the people up here are Buc fans so stop acting like you are the biggest fan. There’s no one up here with an agenda but you. You’re up here to constantly bash Lovie. He’s gone and has nothing to do with the Bucs so leave him gone and let us all be “just be Bucs fans” as you so stupidly suggested. How can we if you and the other clowns keep bringing him up? Focus on the future and what Koetter talks about. He never brings him up why do you? 10 years from now you’ll still be talking about him. If you hate Lovie so much why didn’t you seek him out and punch his lights out, get some of that rage out? We know why because like all gutless wonders you’re all talk.

I’m like Mike Johnson I’ll believe in the proof of this is a better coaching staff and team when the season is going on and the team is playing good. Old saying goes the proof is in the pudding. I’ll start to believe it’s tasty chocolate pudding when it starts to taste and smell like it not just look like it! Class dismissed!
