Storm Departing

August 28th, 2016
Reportedly cut.

Reportedly cut.

So the Bucs have to get down to 75 players on the roster, per league mandate, by 4 p.m. tomorrow. Some cuts are filtering out on social media.

Thus far, all but one cut is predictable and/or not surprising. Mostly camp meat. A couple of guys, if you weren’t told were on the roster, you wouldn’t have known any better.

One cut is slightly surprising and that is running back Storm Johnson, per Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times. Johnson fumbled against the Browns and it’s clear how Dirk Koetter feels about that. (See Kenny Bell)

If one believes in process of elimination like Joe does, it seems rookie Peyton Barber has a good chance of making the 53-man roster. How well he plays special teams will be critical to his job security.

Storm could not weather the storm at RB. Good talent there.

  2. LifeOfABucFan Says:

I like Peyton and mike James too..Peyton will be a great RB at some point..he’s got that hunger..

When he fumbled Friday I text a partner of mines and said that’s it for him bro. I read your article on Mike James being a sure thing last week. I’m not so sure, don’t recall him getting a single snap the other night. I could be late and it could’ve been a minor injury I just don’t recall coming across anything. They seem fascinated by Barber, I’ll say this on his behalf. He has a burst and compact power in his base that is intriguing.

    You are and it was.

    Good lookin out then.

I think Hansborough will end up on the P-squad

    Barber grew up HOMELESS!!

    He is a FREAK!

    He is so focused!

He will run hard on every carry.

    He’s gonna make this team!

  8. Doctor Stroud Says:

It was a crowded backfield, a good problem to have.

  9. LifeOfABucFan Says:

I agree teacherman..he’s your future RB star right there. It’s a natural position for him. He can run right through a wall if needed. Love the kid..

  10. SB with Jameis Says:

Put me in the camp of ‘ when we cut Peyton Barber he will get picked up somewhere else and become a star’
We possibly have the best stable of RBs in the league. Sux to have to let a good one go but that’s the way it is.

  11. Mike Johnson Says:

Storm was not terrible at running back. He flashed here and there. Who Knows..he just might catch on with another team. Good luck to him.

  12. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Is there a list of the cuts already made?

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Nevermind, found it.

    DT Travis Britz
    CB Daniel Davie
    WR Andre Davis
    T Taylor Fallin
    LB Jeremiah George
    DE Martin Ifedi
    RB Storm Johnson
    DT Ishmaa’ily Kitchen
    S Kimario McFadden
    P Jacob Schum
    TE Tevin Westbrook
    S Major Wright

  14. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Storm wasn’t any good at all. He never followed his lead blockers. I remember the first PS game, Vitale opened a hole for him and instead of running through it he broke right and got tackled after a yard or so.

  15. orlbucfan Says:

Thanks for the list, BB. Barber looked real good Friday night. He also hung on to the football. Always a plus there. 🙂 How many more need to be cut? I know they have to be set at 53 before the regular season starts.

  16. Defense Rules Says:

    Gut feel that Bucs will keep 3 QBs, 4 RBs, 5 TEs, 5 WRs, 9 OL, 9 DL, 5 LB, 6 CB, 4 Safeties, 1 P, 1 PK, 1 LS. Just a gut feel.

Not thrilled that we have to carry 3 QBs on the roster this year, but it is understandable given Glennon’s situation (also wish Griffin had performed better this preseason). Convinced that both Barber and James will make it, as will Vitale.

  17. Destro44 Says:

Barber’s greatest advantage is that here is a different type of back. He is a big powerful inside runner, something none of the others are. Hopefully he can become a useful short yardage back this season.

  18. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I think they keep 6 WRs. 2 QBs.

  19. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I don’t think Glennon is going anywhere.

I agree. But I also think a WR might come from the waiver wire. I also think they may try to sneak Griffin onto the Practice Squad, and go with either 6 WR or 6 LB’s.

Wright & George are somewhat surprising in the first cuts, but not shockers.

Looks like Anger won the punting job as I thought he would.

  21. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Anyone got any predictions for final cut surprises?

  22. LifeOfABucFan Says:

I just hope they keep Kourtnei Brown and Josh Keyes..love those two..I’m already ticked off they cut Andre Davis..

  23. Stpetebucsfan Says:

And so Aguayo survived the cuts eh. Oh wait! That was the guys typing last week.

  24. Cobraboy Says:

Bonzai, Myers would not surprise me, nor would Griffin (to sneak him onto the PS).

The real surprised will come when (if) Murphy & Sweezy come off PUP.

  25. JonBuc Says:

Storm sealed his fate when he carried the ball like a loaf of bread/man purse in the 2nd half against the Browns and fumbled away the football. You could pretty much tell he was going to fumble as the play developed.

  26. Cobraboy Says:

BTW, Wright getting cut is no surprise because he’s a “vested veteran.” If he’s on the active roster for the first game, his entire 2016 salary is guaranteed, not a good situation for the team with a marginal player.

That needs to be addressed in the CBA.

  27. Defense Rules Says:

Cobraboy, not sure about the rules, but I thought I read that Griffin couldn’t go back onto the practice squad again because of how we grabbed him from the Saints. And agree that Brandon Myers job may be in jeopardy, but still think Coach K will keep him (not at all sure about Vitale as a TE).

  28. LocalJoker Says:

Joe, cutdown deadline is 4:00pm Tuesday. Not tomorrow Monday.

  29. Cobraboy Says:

Defense Rules: I thought Griffin was picked up on waivers when the Saints were trying to put him on THEIR practice squad. He wasn’t picked of the NO PC unless I have my memory deficient.

Then again the Sain’ts might try the same tactic if the Bucs try sneaking him onto the PC.

  30. Defense Rules Says:

You’re right Cobraboy … found an article which said that the Saints cut Griffin in favor of Luke McCown and the Bucs picked him up off waivers, I guess before the Saints could put him on their PS. Interesting that the article said the Saints cut him because he only threw for 59% in the preseason.

  31. HARVEY Says:

THEY SHOULD HAVE KEPT ANDRE DAVIS ON THE TEAM FOR WR !

  32. SOEbuc Says:

Ive liked Hansborough through the preseason but it looks like he’s not gonna make it
