When Chucky, the lone coach who brought the Bucs a glorious Super Bowl win, was stomping around One Buc Palace, he had a famous demand of his players in practice.
Bring the juice!
It seems like Bucs defensive coordinator Mike Smith is the same way. While Smith may not have the in-your-race personality of Chucky, his raw enthusiasm for the game is rubbing off on his players.
That’s what Bucs defensive tackle Gerald McCoy explained to Pat Kirwan last weekend when Kirwan and his co-host, Jim Miller, broadcast their fabulous show, “Movin’ the Chains,” heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio, live from One Buc Palace.
Pat Kirwan: Mike Smith, new coordinator. We know him very well. He’s been around a long time. You are sitting in the room. You have heard it all before. What are you hearing from Mike?
Gerald McCoy: The thing about Coach Smith, it is hard for him – he never really frowns. I have seen him frown one time and it was a practice indoors at Tropicana Field due to the weather. We didn’t have too good of a period [in practice]. It was a bad period for the defense and it was really the first time that I saw him, like frown since he has been here which is a testament to how he loves the game. Every time he talks to us he is always smiling. So, when you bring in a coach with as much energy as that, it makes you want to learn what he is talking about. He could be talking about a food recipe, not even football, but the fact that the energy he brings, and how much he loves what he does, it makes you want to tune in even more and perfect what it is he is talking about. That’s what makes us believers in the defense that he is putting in.
GMC noted how the Bucs will be versatile. They will run a 43 front or at times run a 34 front. Then GMC threw out another wrinkle saying the Bucs can and may employ a 52 front at times.
“Listen, this is Mike Smith we’re talking about,” GMC said.

Love it man. Get this defensive unit to respond to coach Smith the way the Hawks D did wit Pete Carrol before he broke the trust on the goal line of the Superbowl.

I love the 52 when you could drop one back in coverage and really disguise who is rushing. Or bring them all and blitz an lb… Just be damn sure to get there!

he’s smiling like he’s seen your wife naked and she didn’t even know…..the defense did play with a lot more energy….it was only one preseason game but im encouraged….now if we can get GMC to frown, get in players faces and hold them accountable for their performance we’ll be alright….GO BUCS!!!
