Kwon Talks Chalk

August 2nd, 2016
Daily early morning work.

Daily, early-morning work between teacher and pupil.

Last night, Joe brought word of how fired up Dirk Koetter gets when he strolls One Buc Palace each morning and sees defensive coordinator Mike Smith and middle linebacker Kwon Alexander in a 1-on-1 chalktalk at sunrise.

Kwon was asked about his daily early morning meetings with Smith and broke down what goes on.

“I get there every morning, it’d be right around 6:30 [a.m.],” Kwon said. “I wake up probably about, like 5:10 [a.m.] eat breakfast, then go up there and study for myself probably for like 30 minutes.

“Then I go up there with [Smith] and I get on the board. That’s been great, it’s making me a better player now. If I’d have been doing that, some good things would come out, so I can’t wait for the season and show y’all.”

Wow! This gives Joe the shivers, in a good way. So Kwon noted if he had done this last year, then he would have been better? If not for that damned energy drink, Kwon was in the running for Defensive Rookie of the Year!

Joe loves this for a variety of reasons. One, Alexander is so driven. But also, Smith seems more than happy to get to the office early to work with one of his charges.

Joe has written previously about sensing a new vibe with this team. Now we’re starting to learn examples. Cool stuff, man.

That whole Kwon interview was really impressive. He has imbraced the role of QB of the defense, learning everyones job on the D and he is working his tail off. Also really cool that Jameis sought out study tips to help for Kwon at the pro bowl. It might be crazy training camp hype, but it really feels like we have a really special team forming. Winstons words for Humphries … “I trust him with all my heart”. man, thats some crazy powerful stuff! If the NFL is really close to parity, then the huge changes that have happened this off season could really turn things around for the Bucs in a big way this year. If we get some wins early, look out!

We need mike on this staff permanently, his intelligence and enthusiasm is
somthing that has been missing previously.Joe. you have peeled back the layers on Smith and shown us what a gem we have. Great analysis.
These sessions with Kwan will help him be in the right position and and recognize what defense to call at middle linebacker.

  3. Patrick in VA Says:

Definitely a new vibe. There have been stories in the past about which players are the first to arrive, but there’s a big difference between logging hours and doing legitimate work. It sounds like we’ve finally got kids in there with talent, drive and we’ve got the coaches that can harness that the right way. I’m telling you guys, stock up on your Bucs gear now before it becomes en vogue to have it and the prices shoot up.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Let’s hope that whatever it is that gets him up at 5:10 am isn’t a banned substance…..Obviously, it’s to bed early for Kwon…..that’s good because nothing good happens after midnight in Tampa…or anywhere else for that matter.

  5. Clodhopper Says:

Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise..

Man, the hype from Joe and Ira these last couple of days is getting me fired up for the season. To think, not only do we have a QB on both sides of the ball, we just might have a Jameis on both sides of the ball!! It’s a perfect time of year for fan excitement to grow!!! Cant wait until next Thursday!!!!

After the deep playoff run this year, super bowl in ’17…will this beloved team take less money to stay together and build a dynasty for years to come

Strange, we never heard about GMC93 and the incompetent one working one on one early in morning!!!! Also funny how KA58 went outside the organzation to talk to pro-bowlers about being a leader!!!!! Didn’t he know he had the supposed old face of the franchise the fearless leader of the bucs D GMC93????

Just to throw a bone to mr. bighogheinous, According to my sources, about a year ago, during an afternoon when coach my scheme had another practice off due to his planned CPT time, ( can’t practice for Thunder). when he usually took a nap, he actually made fresh coffee!!! it was “Very” helpful!!! In fact that was the most helpful he was during the “getting Tennessee ready”!!!!!!! I mean he could have taken out the trash that was full. But with the incompetent one, you take what you can get!!!!!!!!!

  9. Bucsfanman Says:

I love it! A coach that’s willing to teach and a player eager to learn. Only good things can come of this.

    The Buc Realist

There you go buddy – get it all out of your system.
But just remember – this too shall pass.

  11. Buccfan37 Says:

Great! Good things come for those whose wait is the hardest. Anticipation is making me wait. The hype is bursting at the seams. Let it all hang out.

Realist with all is charm actually made a very vslid point. It’s a shame kwon had to go outside the organization when mr perfect gmc is in tge roster. Just more proof the lack of drive and leadership the previous leaders on defense had.

Lead the way youbg Kwon maybe some will rub off on 93

  13. 813bucboi Says:

great to hear kwon perfecting his craft…..GO BUCS!!!!

  14. 813bucboi Says:

@REALIST…..once 8/11 rolls around you cant mention lovie….its dirk’s team once the first preseason game is kicked off….until then…keep making a fool of yourself…GO BUCS!!!!

My one and only comment on this: He went outside the organization to talk to a player at his own position. Last I checked GMC doesn’t play MLB. Besides, he wasn’t asking for advice on being a leader, he was asking how he can study better at his position. Funny how you either didn’t know that, or simply don’t care because it doesn’t fit your narrative. Also funny why you don’t mention that he didn’t seek out Lavonte David (who at least plays LB). But any chance you can get to take a shot at McCoy, you will do it. I talked to him the other day, and he said he’s really sorry he wouldn’t’ sign your underwear, but he was just a little creeped out because you were still wearing it.

  16. Bucsfanman Says:

Yes PLEASE Realist, get it out of your system already! Sept 11th and your promise can’t come soon enough!
Also, isn’t it fair to ask to stop comparing players young/old, current/former? Yes, we know Kwon and GMC are different. But before we exalt the “greatness” of Kwon lets let him get some experience under his belt. A little perspective perhaps? I’m just saying.

  17. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Hawaiian

” Jameis explained that Kwon asked him how to best study and prepare”
JW3 is a QB not middle LB

“‘Sean Lee, how can I get Kwon to get like you?’ From the study points because Kwon always asks me like, ‘How do you study?”
Sean Lee is OLB for Dallas

You are as wrong as a lovie game day plan Hawaiian Buc!!!! Read the article again!!!! Also I don’t remember LVD54 saying he was the “leader” every time a camera or microphone was put into his face!!!!!

  18. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Bucsfanman

I have already said that the “season” starts for me in 9 days!!!!! (maybe that was a typo and you meant to say Aug 11th) Then, only if some incredible stupid coach my scheme news comes across ( which is totally possible at any minute) I will not mention the incompetent one, as I will actually have The 2016 Bucs to talk about and break down!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!

  19. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Perhaps I’m missing the jist of this debate. As for going outside of the organization didn’t we just read yesterday that Kwon went to #3 for some preparation tips and leading a unit and #3 told him specifically to check out another MLB for better advice than a QB could give him.

#3 even tossed in some names of who to check on including Kuechly.

I can’t wait until Philadelphia. This is how far the sports conversation is sinking in the downtime between real action.

Seriously! They’re all freaking trying to get better! Isn’t that the point of this story. I don’t care if they go to bumfk and back in search of whatever guru..whichever other NFL player who might help them….they’re busting their arses to get better guys!!!

It’s all good right now for Buc fans! Enjoy the moment.

  20. Bucsfanman Says:

    ^^^^Amen!

Typo Realist! I meant 8/11, yeah, that’s it!

  21. Lord Cornelius Says:

So basically people hate McCoy because he has announced himself a leader in the past, represents the bad era of the franchise, and is outgoing and happy in interviews.

I get that at least lol. Still think it’s wasted energy because we have more than 1 leader now & McCoy is easily our best D-lineman but either way the team is evolving thank god.

Winston is the Lord Commander but he’s got guys like Kwon/McCoy/McDonald etc as his elected defensive field generals. Vjax probably his main guy on offense with Logan guy.

Still – in this instance about Kwon and Winston – he reached out to Winston because Winston is the ultimate student of the game and wanted to learn his study habits & approach to film. Winston reached out to other LBs at the pro bowl for this. Not sure wtf that has to do with Gerald McCoy and agree that if anything it would be a slight against LD.

  22. Erik w/ Clean Athletics 'The Kwon Alexander of Bucs Fans' Says:

So, does anyone else think Kwon has potential to be DPOY?? Maybe not this year, but who knows maybe this year Lol

Either way, I heard that the Defense is winning so far through the 1st 5days of practice against our prolific offense… If this D turns out of Top-10 or Top-5 performance this year to go with our Top-5 offense, we will win the d@mn Superbowl.

  23. Bob in valrico Says:

    @realist
As you are probably aware sean Lee started as Mike linebacker with Dallas . He was moved to OLB in 2015 to protect him from further
    Injuries.

  24. Bob in valrico Says:

    @ Hawaiian but
LVD did actually work with Jean during pre season and worked with in the early season until Kwan caught up.
And you are right Kwan went Sean Lee because he was one of the
    best MLB in the game.

  25. Bob in valrico Says:

    Edit
    Meant Kwan
