Koetter Cuts Day 1 Practice Early

July 28th, 2016

Jacquies SmithLots of smiles on the One Buc Palace practice field about 10:30 a.m. today.

On Day 1 of training camp, head coach Dirk Koetter got the ball rolling early on his promise to keep things easy on his team this spring and summer.

Koetter cut practice short, about 10 minutes in total.

This wasn’t lost on the players.

“We know he’s going to do some things to try to keep us fresh this whole training camp,” Jacquies Smith told Joe. “Obviously, he’s doing his part and we appreciate it. So we have to do our part and go all out when we’re working.”

Alterraun Verner said there’s no question the team appreciates the rest. “We feel it,” Verner said laughing.

Combine the morning practices, training periods without helmets — those walk-through sessions were back today — and the Bucs adding lights to training camp for night-time walk-throughs later this summer, Koetter is not messing around with what he perceives as a negative: players practicing in extreme heat.

Very hot and dry baking to the oldies. Some clouds would help.

I like it, keep ’em fresh. I have lived in FL my whole life. you never get used to the heat enough to have an effect on gameday.

I have mixed emotions on this. Obviously they cant cut game days short because of heat but if it keeps players fresh and they can finish in the 4th qtr than it will be worth it.

I never played at a professional level, but I’ve played and practiced enough football in the Florida summer to know and agree with what Koetter preaches. I like his approach and the players should be mentally sharp enough to learn what’s being taught instead of focusing on how exhausted and dehydrated they are.

The CBA has already cut down the number of practices, move them to nights or tell them to suck it up. Today was only the first practice. No wonder most teams look like crap the first 4-5 weeks of the season. Will the indoor facility be done next year Joe?

@big says…”the players should be mentally sharp enough to learn what’s being taught instead of focusing on how exhausted and dehydrated they are.”….I agree….GO BUCS!!!!

Koetter is spot on! We all know the cliche..practice makes perfect!

Only perfect practice makes perfect! Many times when your brain is fried in the heat the lessons are lost and the work becomes counterproductive.

    Koetter is the man!
