Day 1 Training Camp Notes & Observations

July 28th, 2016

EvansSmithcamp

Joe is your eyes and ears at training camp. The Bucs came out with loads of energy, though it was just an underwear football (no pads) session for Day 1. Here’s your need-to-know.

*Team Glazer is in the house, with one member of Team Glazer pulling in immediately behind Joe at the One Buc Palace security gate. Yes, Joe made sure to be driving at proper speed.

*First “play” of practice, an end zone drill with Jameis rolling left on all plays, is a throw to Mike Evans in the left corner of the end zone. DROP! Evans seemed a little bit in disbelief. Every other connection in that drill was spot on, including a nice toe tap on the back line by Vincent Jackson.

*Drop! Russell Shepard from Jameis.

*Kenny Bell makes a sweet catch away from his body on a ball behind him. Bell finishing hard to the end zone on all catches today, especially a thread-the-needle from Jameis. Yes, it’s still underwear football. Pads and hitting appear Sunday.

*Jameis is razor sharp early. The stands at One Buc Palace are 70 percent full, even though it’s not open to the public. First public practice is Saturday. Lots of fans at the cool new kids zone.

*Near interception by Alterraun Verner on a jumped short route by Vincent Jackson. Verner couldn’t hold the ball.

*Jameis to Austin Seferian-Jenkins. DROP! About 10 yards on a seam route.

*TOUCHDOWN! Deep ball, 40 yards, Mike Glennon to Russell Shepard, with Johnthan Banks getting burned. (Video here).

*Another near pick by Verner. Jameis held the ball about five seconds, which would never happen in a game. Still a nice play on what could have been a pick-6 if Verner held on.

*Jameis tried couple of passes to ASJ over middle but no connections. The second pass, Kwon Alexander seemed to disrupt ASJ’s route just as the ball was closing in on him.

*Will Gholston lining up all over the line. Seems to be left end on run defense.

* After dropping the first pass of training camp, Mike Evans hauls in a pass over the middle from Jameis in traffic and turns it into a nice gain.

* May not mean anything but Bucs using a lot of guys in motion and shifts.

* Still underwear football. Periodically, Bucs go topless and practice without helmets to keep cool.

* Most excited crowd has become so far? When the cheerleaders walked through.

* Kevin Pamphile working at first-team left guard with J.R. Sweezy not practicing.

* So far. Verner keeps flashing big time.

* Perfectly thrown pass from Glennon to Bell in stride. No, the pads are not on yet.

* Kwon Alexander should have had a pick or bat-down on a Jameis pass. Perfect position but didn’t get a hand on ball in blanket coverage on a short throw over middle.

* Noah Spence at right defensive end (he had lined up at times at outside linebacker) knocks down a Glennon pass.

* Jameis hits Shepard right in the chest on a bomb down right sideline. So he has trouble with long passes, eh? Brent Grimes was burned on that play. Interesting, rarely was Grimes thrown at all day. Jameis gave Shepard a big high-5 after that one.

*Camp meat alert! Linebacker Adarius Glanton had a nice bat down while covering running back Storm Johnson. Rookie free agent tackle out of Louisville, Kelby Johnson gets screamed at for being on the ground during a run play. Big no-no when it’s still underwear football. Great way for guys to get hurt.

*Yes, there was an F-bomb mini-tirade. This time, courtesy of defensive coordinator Mike Smith. Joe could not tell — or find out — who was the recipient. Smith spent most of the day calling plays through the microphone/headset system.

wonderful. With Verner reestablishing his confidence I imagine he catches more of those should-be pick-6’s.

Not good to hear about Evan’s drop. But I am not as worried as I am abt ASJ.

Good to hear Bell is showing up. Underwear football I know. but route-running, speed, and catching skills can still be put on display

  4. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

    Any notes on Aguayo today?

Nothing of note at all. Bucs didn’t work on everything today.–Joe

When I shared the Verner training video with peeps, you just had the feeling he’d been working hard. Looked in great shape, and reminds me of Martin last season primed for a breakout year.

The “it’s just underwear football line” only appears in passing or after positive plays from Kenny Bell. Way to be objective Joe!

  16. GhostofTedford Says:

I predict a good year for the Bucs and a great year for Verner. I always suspected he was misused.

  27. Jacob Says:

Feels like your scouting for another team why do we need to know Jameis only rolled out left at practice?

Who said he ONLY rolled out left at practice. Don’t make stuff up. –Joe

  28. Bucnut2 Says:

Not sure I trust the “drops” stats from the Joes. When I look back at the the tape, some of Ms”s drops we just plain BAD throw from America’s QB.

    Good notes JOE. Thanks!

  34. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

It’s training camp season and therefore prediction time. My favorite backup QB (Glennon), who’s capable of competing for the starting QB spot on a fair number of other NFL team not as lucky as the Bucs in that department, is destined to carry the Bucs on his back for a couple games this year (spelling JW3 until he returns from a minor injury) and gets the W’s needed for the Bucs to make the post season THIS YEAR. Some will still curse Licht for not trading Glennon away for a 2017 6th round pick, but most will realize the wisdom Licht and the Bucs had bolstering the QB position with two talented players while they could. Presidential election predictions are also available upon request 🙂
