Thursday Practice Notes & Observations

MikeSmith

A special relationship seems to be brewing between Mike Smith and his A-list, young linebackers

Your beloved Buccaneers were back on the practice fields of One Buc Palace today, the final “OTA” event before next week’s mandatory minicamp. Joe’s got plenty of nuggets.

*The picture above is a look at Lavonte David, Kwon Alexander and Mike Smith immediately after practice. Smith is very hands-on with the linebackers corps, and the three seem to have more than just a typical coach-player bond. The consulted together on the field after practice, and walked off the field slowly together.

*Louis Murphy, coming off ACL surgery in November, is in uniform and catching footballs in hands drills but he’s not running as part of a football activity.

*A strong percentage of no-helmet work today. This is a Dirk Koetter thing Joe has written about previously. It’s a way to give guys a heat break while still practicing. Welcome to underwear football.

*Wide receivers coach/offensive coordinator Todd Monken is all pumped up as usual during drills. During a stop-and-go-route drill, Monken is in coverage and Adam Humphries and Kenny Bell look sharp. Humphries had a deep one-hand grab. Monken offers a lot of love for wide receiver Bernard Reedy. (Catch up on him here.)

*It’s a cloudy day but Vincent Jackson is sporting shades and it appears he was granted light duty, a veteran day.

*Punt returns! Humphries is the No. 1 choice. Donteea Dye and Reedy in the mix.

*Lot of work by cornerbacks covering bunched receivers. Vernon Hargreaves gets an education. (Video here)

*For a stretch of offense-vs-defense work, uninvolved Bucs players obstructed the view of media. Nothing sinister. Just the way they were asked to stand.

*7-on-7 kicks off with Jameis hitting Mike Evans across the middle for a short gain.

*Jameis again to Adam Humphries short.

*Mike Glennon enters and throws a dumpoff to Cameron Brate

*Lot of short throws early. It’s Glennon to Mike James in the right flat.

*Glennon to Reedy nicely broken up by Keith Tandy.

*Glennon threads the needle to Dye in between Hargreaves and Major Wright for about 15 yards.

*Incomplete! 45-yard toss from backup QB Ryan Griffin to Andre Davis. Cornerback Javien Elliot in coverage.

*Jameis returns and throws a five-yard pass to Doug Martin who was facing the line of scrimmage. Lavonte David was all over Martin, but Martin hung on while David clapped his hands in frustration.

*Jameis complete to Humphries. Great rhythm there.

*Perfectly thrown low ball to Russell Shepard with Jude Adjei-Barimah blanketing him. Either it was going to be a 15-yard catch in the seam or hit the ground. No catch.

*Bell looks extra quick today. Ten-yard haul-in from Glennon.

*INTERCEPTION! Major Wright plucks a poorly thrown ball by Mike Glennon, who bounces back with a quick strike to Reedy.

*Lots of hand work and punching going on in the offensive line’s designated area.

*Noah Spence seen grinding through drills. Joe’s really not seeing Spence’s quickness, but again, it’s just a drill.

*11-on-11 picks up with Jameis tucking and running to the left side with, apparently, nobody open.

*Next appears to be a designed quarterback run off right guard. Tight end Tevin Westbrook and Kwon Alexander collide accidentally and seem to feel the effects.

*Nice coverage by Alterraun Verner at the right, outside corner position.

*Crossing route. Jameis to Humphries.

*Glennon rolls right and feels the explosion of Hargreaves, who closes and pounces like a cat on Westbrook for a breakup.

*INTERCEPTION! Mr. Hargreaves, who just turned 21, shows his athleticism and plucks a deep ball out of the air from Glennon 35 yards down field.

*Nobody open. Glennon runs.

*Too much time. Jameis dumps off to Brandon Myers, a ball that either needed to be thrown sooner or thrown away, if it were a real game with a real pass rush.

*Cameron Brate and Griffin put in lots of extra work after practice.

*And the moment of practice that got the most chatter was Austin Seferian-Jenkins getting the boot from Dirk Koetter. Ch. 8 video below.

  2. Bob Says:

What is it with this guy?

  3. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

ASJ IS ATURD… big miss by LICHT

  4. JimBucsFan Says:

ASJ is a talented man, so I want to see him on the field….IF he is healthy and committed to this team. Things like today don’t help him one iota. I’ll take Cameron Brate and his chemistry with my boy Jameis over the crap we’re seeing from ASJ.

Rooting for you ASJ! GET YOUR….STUFF TOGETHER!

  5. DB55 Says:

I thought Hargreaves had 2 ints today? I thought I heard a reporter say that while interviewing Koetter today after practice.

  6. Strider ....Sec 147 Says:

    He is a bum

  7. The bucfan 88 Says:

Mike smith is look at Kwon and Levonte like I wanna retire here

  8. LovieBall Says:

So Glennon is throwing the ints now?

  9. Jenaw Says:

Woo Hoo! Glad to hear mention of Javien Elliot. Would really love to see this guy at least make the practice squad. Given how hard he worked just get to walk on to the FSU football team and what he made of that effort, I think he could be a real asset given the time to learn and grow in the pros.

    Keep pushing it Javien!

  10. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I don’t think that was what we are being led to believe it was.

  11. Mike Johnson Says:

Year after year we/the media/the coaches and unknown geromes..hype this team way up there. I for one am Not buying into the hype. Win some games then I will believe! Get to the playoffs, then I’ll believe. Win a playoff game, then I’ll. Better yet? Bring home a superbowl then I’ll surely believe. Until then? I’m waiting………

  12. unbelievable Says:

Agreed, looks like he didn’t know his assignment or something so Koetter sent him off the field to go study instead of wasting time outside.

Still not good, but maybe not as bad as we were thinking earlier… It’s in our best interest as Bucs fans for this kid to get his sh!t together, so I really hope he does.

  13. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Again, probably my most favorite Joe posts are Practice Notes.

    Thanks Joes!!

  14. Buccfan37 Says:

Get out of here, meaning this play is not for you? Nice recap! Humphries getting his shots, coaching likes his effort.

  15. Buccfan37 Says:

Keep up the hyping work, all hyped up.

  16. Ed Says:

All of that is fine, sending players to the locker room and all of that junk. That stuffs mean nothing if you do not win. All i can say is they better win,or the fans will be sending him to the locker room.

  17. LakeLandBuc Says:

Bernard Reedy could win a spot on the roster as PT/KR and slot receiver.. At the worse he could make the practice squad.

  18. Buc1987 Says:

Any missed FG’s Joe? Or did I miss that part?

  19. BuccaneEric75 Says:

87, I can’t tell if you’re serious or joking! It’s Aguayo, of course there was no misses!😉

  20. Buc1987 Says:

Eric…no I’m not. He missed more than a few last season at FSU…

  21. McClorasMaddenDaddy210 Says:

    @Mike Johnson
Damn homie, you still mad? Funny thing just crossed my mind. Didn’t hear one word from you when coach my scheme was blowing wreck last year. This is football! Win or be fired is what your yelling NOW…really? You sir ARE the definition of Troll!
    #blowIToutyourazz
    #BUCUTALKINBOUT
    YO JOE!
    GO BUCS!!!

  22. The Buc Realist Says:

Who would miss after the Head Coach was throwing players out of a Voluntary OTA!!!!!!!

  23. Brent bull/buc Says:

I hope asj works out. If your gm screws up an early 2nd rd pick that hurts. A good gm should pull a quality player there.

  24. Buc1987 Says:

    McClorasMaddenDaddy210…ya wanna know why?

Because him and BigHogHenious were nowhere on this site until Lovie got fired.

You figure it out from there. Perhaps they heard Stephen A Smith saying it was a racist move and that’s what compels them.

  25. Dewey Selmon Says:

Jameis likes #11 and Dirk seems to trust him enough to PR. He could become Jameis’s safety valve for years to come.

  26. BuccaneEric75 Says:

87, definitely not a racist move. I remember a more accomplished white coach that the Glazers fired after losing his last 4 games of the season to miss the playoffs. And he finished 9-7, not 6-10.

  27. Buccaneers Says:

Tighten up defense. I want to hear about y’all getting some INTs off Winston. He needs to get picked a few more to times this preseason to help him learn a lil more…….Next year he will be shredding you up on after who we have. Bit for now y’all should be good enough to get him to make some mistakes! Are you guys not good enough?

  28. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Oh yea, 87, I forgot. They replaced him with a black coach.

  29. BigHogHaynes Says:

Buc 1987: what do you want, all you do is spread bull daily, I can’t post a different opinion than yours? You were here longer than me does that make you JBF police? I signed the required papers to be on this site, which you do not control and you can’t and never will control me in any way, shape, form, or fashion, I’ll continue to read any and all posts even ones I don’t agree with, I’m never afraid to learn something even from someone, “how do you say it like you”! PICK UP THE PIECES/Doobi Brothers!

  30. BigHogHaynes Says:

It th WWE, but I’ll be back for you Buc1987, see that RESPECT!!

  31. BuccaneEric75 Says:

We all may not see eye to eye some of the time, but we can all agree on one thing…GO BUCS!

  32. 911bucs Says:

    Humphries!! woo-woo

  33. SB with Jameis Says:

It is awesome to hear about VH3 making ints and breakups so often. Just putting some poopy tastes in all the mouths of his doubters.

  34. Destinjohnny Says:

Jason’s first draft was not that good looking back now
There were sooooo many plAyers he passed on in both the 2nd and 3rd round wow. We passed on a lot of good players to draft Austin.
The guy does not have it between the ears even a little
I think c- is being kind

  35. DB55 Says:

    SB

I’m taking notice. 2 Ints today. He been running with the 2’s but making plays nevertheless. If you watch the press conference interviews on Bucs . Com you notice all Koetter has been talking about is how impressed he’s been with the defense. I’m getting excited.

  36. SB with Jameis Says:

Amen DB. I fully believe that there are some guys that play as fast in pads as they play without. It all comes from instinct and genetics at that point. If the person is smart and teachable then Dam the “measurables”. Here is to hoping he impresses me even more wearing Pewter and Red!!

  37. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

Bernard Reedy putting in that work baby! I sure hope he’s our return man and not slow @$$ Humphries. Rooting for Andre Davis as well, those are my 2 sleeper picks.

  38. gulfcoast Says:

JOE! JOE!! YO JOE!!!!!!!! Can you hear me? Way down the message board???? Check it. Your ‘Practice Notes & Observations’ portions of this site are great, highly anticipated by me and I very much enjoy them. Thanks!! S/O to the Joes for this nugget alone….
