Practice Video: New D-Line Lessons & Drills

Rookie Noah Spence and the Bucs’ D-line get in hands-free work.

The Bucs have invested a lot of faith in the ability of veteran defensive line coach Jay Hayes, who spent the last 13 season with the Bengals.

And there’s a difference seen on the practice field.

One drill that intrigued Joe is hands-free work. It’s all about developing instinctive, technically-sound movement, defensive end Will Gholston told Joe. And it’s new to Gholston, who’s in his fourth year at One Buc Palace.

“Yeah, we start off with the hips and make sure you clear your hips, then we do a club rip to clear your hips,” Gholston said.

Joe’s got exclusive video of Noah Spence running through the hands-free hips drill below. As for Hayes, he’s all over players — positive and negative — in this drill and, really, in every drill. (Video disabled June 5, per NFL media rules)

    This looks like a dance step from the Virginia reel.

    Hayes said something about what he noticed on film lacking in GMC’s game during a recent presser. He said something about utilzing his hands more. A lot folks round here are kinda luke-warm on GMC but if anyone can help change that sentiment I’m thinking this dude can. Kinda scary to think,a meaner nastier more agressive version of what we already are familiar with. I keep hearing that soundbite from a week or so ago. “Play violent play violent play violent”.

    @Joe

    Any truth to the rumor that GMC93 kept getting stopped on the second obstacle during that drill, because he was “double teamed”??????

  4. SB with Jameis Says:

    He looks like he could be a DWTS candidate in the future. 🙂

    The video was exciting.

    Is there anyway to have clips at least 30 seconds long? 10 seconds is not worth my time.

  7. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Bonzai

    just decrease the speed under the “settings”!!!!!! LOL!!!

    what a strange drill.

  9. Owlykat Says:

    The proof is in the pudding but we do know how effective our new DL Coach was in his years at Cincy. I am expecting a big improvement in our DL this year because of his drills and methods. Cullen was good but his successor is as good as they get!

    I second what Owlykat just said.

    For the first time in memory, Bucs coaches, scouts & Licht spoke about hands, hands use, hand speed and hand strength prior to the draft.

    Interesting.

    Maybe they’re onto something…

    Exclusive video? gtfo. lol

  15. Harry Says:

    The drill itself is not that interesting, it is what and how Hayes is teaching that is. He breaks it down so it is more instinctive, more fundamental. I think Hayes is going to be a huge factor for us.

    What excites me about Spence and gives me hope for him being productive in just his first year is he has a Complete repitwore of weapons in the pass rush game. He doesn’t have just one move that he lives off, he does them all well, and u don’t know wich one is coming if your a lineman. To have that coming out of college is very incouraging if your a bucs fan, and it explains why he was labeled the best “pure pass rusher” in the draft.
