Where Will Hargreaves Play?

How best to use Vernon Hargreaves?

How best to use Vernon Hargreaves?

So the Bucs drafted a corner at No. 11. If everything works out for the best, the Bucs have a logjam at corner (you can never have enough).

There is four-time Pro Bowler Brent Grimes. Barring injury, he is a starter.

There there is former Pro Bowler Alterraun Verner. Can the PTSD he suffered under the boot of Coach My Scheme be solved in training camp?

You have a former second-round pick in Johnthan Banks, who had flashes of stardom his rookie year and led the team in picks in 2014, only to be benched last year after suffering a knee injury — benched for Toast Jenkins if you can imagine.

Now you have Vernon Hargreaves. If all these corners max out their talents, what is a defensive coach to do? Dirk Koetter said his defensive staff wasted no time last night trying to figure out the puzzle and marched to their bunkers.

“We’re still trying to evaluate with our current defensive players we have and that’s where the mini-camp the last few days – in fact right after our pick our defensive staff was heading to the film room to take a look at some practice tape from this week,” Koetter said. “We’re still trying to evaluate all that. With Vernon going to be in here next weekend and we’ll get a chance to look at him in rookie min-camp, that’s something that we’re going to have to work out.”

Surely the Bucs are not going to sit a high first round draft pick? Last night, Koetter even tossed out the suggestion Hargreaves could be a nickel corner.

Fun brain-teasers ahead.

What difference does it make who the 2nd “starter” is? Teams employ 3, 4, 5 WR sets now all the time. They’ll all get plenty of playing time regardless.

  2. Lord Cornelius Says:

I keep wondering about Banks at S potentially.

I don’t care what they do with who starts just play the best guys. Nickle & Dime packages are often used in the NFL so even if VH3 starts out as our 4th CB he’d get a lot of playing time.

Banks seems like the only CB of the 4 that isn’t as suited for nickle. Maybe he’s 4th guy then if I had to guess. Or he wins the competition to start outside.

  3. Iron Man Power Washers Says:

Not to mention Jude, who came on strong last year.

  4. Patrick in VA Says:

Honestly, I wonder if Grimes or Verner wouldn’t be better suited at safety. it seems like the natural transition position for CBs who are getting older or maybe have lost a step. Grimes is definitely getting older and I’m not sure that Verner hasn’t lost a step, but I think they could both be that Tyron Mattheiu type of guy. Maybe not at his level but playing the position that way.

  5. j dubb Says:

like lord cornelius i ponder what banks can do at safety. hes one of our playmakers in the secondary so we should try and get all our playmakers on the field. i dont think he could do much worse than last years starting safeties. grimes and verner outside vh3 at nickel and robinson dime.

  6. DaRealistBucFan Says:

Hopefully we will just trade Hargreaves whom should’ve never been drafted by us in the 1st place. Not when Sheldon Rankins is sitting right there for you. We will find out 2 times next year who made the smart pick and who screwed it all up. My only is Sean Peyton got it right. Probably the same reason why the Saints beat us all the time. They get it right we don’t.

  7. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    Lord beat me to it.

    Banks to FS?

  8. Abdominal Snowman Says:

I think you guys are on to something with moving somebody to safety. I like banks on the outside vs taller receivers in nfl south plus he is in a contract year so he wants to show what he can do. If our 4 corners are our best dbs I don’t see why we don’t get all of them on the field on nickel downs.

  9. DaRealistBucFan Says:

I don’t think Verner has lost a step I think he played in a horrible scheme. Grimes has definitely lost a step tho. Not sure why everyone is so excited to see a has been on our roste . And before anyone tries to throw the he made the probowl point up. He was anointed after 3 CB’s turned down the offer to play I’m the pro bowl. Grimes was a source of weakness in Miami’s secondary continually picked on cause of his height. Horrible free agent signing and horrible 1st rd pick. This franchise just got set back 2 more years at least

  10. Abdominal Snowman Says:

    @dafakeazzbucsfan

You mad bro? Cry all you want but nobody moved up for rankins and he isn’t a buc so why you all over his jock? If you a real bucs fan you should root for your new buc.

  11. gotbbucs Says:

They’ll use him the same way Arizona uses the Honey Badger.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Let’s ask Banks to bulk up and play DE!!!

  13. Tbbucs3 Says:

Only the senior bowl crowd actually wanted Rankins. And Banks seems like the odd one out on the depth chart unless they could find good use of him as a rotational player, not sure if banks would like that. Jude AB hasn’t showed anything since he stepped on the field, he’ll get run out out of town by Robinson. Banks is a physical zone corner, has some value but not at safety.

  14. Mnbucsfan Says:

Hopefully Hargreaves plays on the opposite side of Grimes

  15. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    “Where Will Hargreaves Play?”

    On defense!

  16. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I don’t think they’ll know where to put him until they see what he does in the off season.

  17. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I’m hoping they don’t release Banks to make room. Isn’t he in a contract year? This could be the year he proves himself…and that would be a great thing.

Hargreaves should not be handed a starting role. Make him earn it so he appreciates it more. I suspect he will earn it in the off season.

Can you guys imagine how he and Kwon’s excitement will spread???

  18. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Koetter said it in his presser:

“I think the offense has gotten enough attention the last two years, don’t you? We’re looking for defensive players.”

I’m starting to suspect they won’t go after offense at all.

Mike Smith must be dancing the jig right now.

  19. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Did anybody notice last night that the NFL Net showed a pic of the DB’s VHG will be joining and they left Banks out of the picture. Do they not know he was a second round draft choice for us? How do producers get jobs at the NFL net. I can do better.

He was anointed after 3 CB’s turned down the offer

OMG we only got the 4th best DB? 4th out of 64 potential starters…or perhaps it’s 4th in our Conference which would make Grimes a shabby 4th out of 32. Oh the horrors!!!

  20. JollyBucsFan Says:

Could Grimes work at S? similar to how we played Barber near the end of his career

  21. SOEbuc Says:

Iron man- I heard Jude made a nice play in practice the other day also

  22. lurker Says:

then by your probowl logics, lavonte david sux!

  23. martinii Says:

I think you have the luxury of carefully evaluating Banks and Verner, acclimating Grimes and Robinson, and easing Hargreaves into the System. Of course this entails intense competition between the 5 players, but each guy deserves his turn under a Smith microscope. I am a firm believer that high first round picks should be plug in starters which is why I didn’t agree with the pick. That being said it is what it is, so the only alternative is to let them compete and let our new Gator get as much mentoring from veterans as possible.

  24. lurker Says:

we used a high draft pick on a nickel corner? someone geared to mike smith’s defense…a defense that could change in a year or 2 when mike smith gets a head coaching gig again?

  25. lurker Says:

    wasn’t tyrann matthew a 4th round pick…

  26. ATrain Says:

Bucs should have taken a Beast at DT or a DE….

  27. JollyBucsFan Says:

Started watching his highlights. I am now convinced Hargreaves has elite-level ball skills.

and while he might have a slower 40 time and he is shorter he is extremely explosive to the ball and has serious ups.

I am happier now with this pick than I was before. Still not convinced CB was a need. sort of an unknown, but not a need. That being said. draft where BPA and need matches. CB wasnt deep in this draft and now we can snag a couple good DEs through rds 2-3.

    In Licht I trust

  28. unbelievable Says:

Sounds like they may be evaluating whether or not to keep Verner around for this season…

  29. Brian Says:

dareal, give it a rest already. All your crying isnt changing a thing. I trust the FO we have way more than you.

  30. 813bucboi Says:

translation…everyone besides grimes and vhg is on the hot seat in the secondary…GO BUCS!!!

  31. Bucsfanman Says:

Wow! Talk about the record scratching and the crowd falling silent! No matter what, some of you guys will never be happy.

This is a good “problem” to have. It’s no secret that our secondary was as porous as swiss cheese in the summer. Many thought the pick should be DE, including me. Lets see what they do in the 2nd. Maybe it’ll quiet the “he’s too short” crowd.

  32. Bucsfanman Says:

Welcome Mr. Hargreaves! May you have a long, interception-filled career in Tampa Bay!

  33. Trubucfan22 Says:

I have no problem letting VH3 play as the 3rd or 4th cb. You play whoever is the best at their position. I assume VH3 is better than verner and banks and will win that job. But if he doesnt, then so be it. He will get better and he will still see the field in nickle or dime and other sub packages. He could also compete as a return man. i have no problem with any scenario. He is a rookie, you can’t expect a rookie to be out a pro bowl CB. It would awesome if he does, and im sure he will. But im not going to throw a tantrum if VH3 isnt a starter on opening day. That would actually be a good thing. It means we are stacked 4 deep at CB. That would be awesome.

  34. CrustyCrab Says:

See this is what it has come to Coach my Scheme seen what Mike Smith sees. The current DB’s on the Bucs want it easy not willing to use their brain and now Licht is about to throw their arses out the door..

  35. WheresYourBuccaneers? Says:

didn’t really NEED to upgrade anymore (than we did) at corner ESPECIALLY if we could have gotten a ferocious pass-rush by adding Sheldon Rankins. Bad freakin mistake and, oh yeah, he’s in our division. Bad news

  36. DaRealistBucFan Says:

    @ Brian
You trust this FO? 😅😅😅😅 cause you know they’ve been so successful right. How bout finally seeing _500 than you can bore me with how you trust the idiots in the front office. It looks to me that Mr. Jon Robinson was the REAL brains behind the last two drafts clearly evidenced by how poorly we’ve already started out drafting specially compared to Tennessee.

  37. 813bucboi Says:

@wheres….screw rankings…we are well prepared for him with sweezy and marpet….oline is solid…GO BUCS!!!

  38. WheresYourBuccaneers? Says:

    Physics test 101 – ready? begin…
a 6’4″ NFL receiver (who can jump out of the stadium) jumps up for a pass in the endzone…
a 5’11” COLLEGE level corner (who can, aparently, also jump out of the stadium) jumps up for that same ball in the endzone…
Who (more than likely) comes down with it?
    yes, you pass!
Don’t bring up “short 6′ 205 Darrelle Revis”, trust me I’ve seen many of your games, YOU sir are no Darrelle Revis…)
Did the “lightbulbs” in the war room do this math?
nice pick when we have NO PASS RUSH!

  39. Dave Pear Says:

Remember Licht said he has a 3 year drafting plan.
Grimes won’t be here in 3 years.
Let’s give Licht a little slack.
He might actually know what he’s doing.
    Unlike most of us.

  40. Dave Pear Says:

    WheresYourBuccaneers,
We have 3 of the tallest receivers in the NFL.
    The Dunkaneers. Remember?
    How’s that working out?

  41. Stpetebucsfan Says:

I don’t like calling other poster’s names so I’m not going to mention names…but jeebus…there are few real gems posting.

I sometimes wonder if these guys are Buc fans or just trolls. I’m not talking about the regs who preferred a DE or who have concerns about VHG’s height and speed.

I’m talking about the idjits who are thowing Licht under the bus for ONE pick after hitting a grand slam last year. Oh but according to one savant here that’s because it was really Jon Robinson and Licht has no talent at all.

Where do these tools come from?

Quite well i’m thinking! (just ask 4000 yard passer Winston)
