Jameis The Greeter

Face of franchise for newcomers.

Face of franchise for newcomers.

In two weeks, the NFL draft arrives. A true, glorious day for NFL fans across the globe.

One person looking forward to that is America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston. Why? Because he is the team leader.

One weekend after the draft the Bucs will host their rookie minicamp. Rookies, led by the draft picks, pile into One Buc Palace to get their first taste of the NFL. And Jameis is looking forward to greeting them.

Jameis spoke about the soon-to-be newcomers earlier this week.

“I can’t wait,” Jameis said. “I’m all into welcoming somebody in because I know when I came in, a lot of people have their guard up because they don’t know what to do expect. They’re like, ‘This guy is in the NFL, he might think he’s like this,’ and I’m just coming from college, I need to be this type of way so he doesn’t think I’m a bad guy.

“I’m going to be like, ‘Bro, be yourself. That’s the easiest way that you can have success quickly in this league. So be yourself,’ and I’m not going to be trying to put [any] pranks on [any] rookies or anything like that. No, not at all. I’m going to accept them in because they are part of this family.”

Jameis also said while he does believe in having fun while grinding, he doesn’t believe in rookie hazing.

Joe just assumes the way Jameis is wired, he sees hazing as wasted time, time needed to work and finally get this damn team out of the friggin’ division basement.

I don’t think this team is good enough to justify rookie hazing. Nobody needs to earn their way on to this team at this point. We haven’t accomplished anything. Once we’ve done something then we can say that a newcomer needs to earn acceptance. At this point, I think Jameis’ approach is about where the Bucs are. Everyone willing to come here and work should be welcomed enthusiastically.

Winston’s demeanor makes everyone welcome, that’s part of his quality that stands out. I can only think of the Graham Nash song “Be Yourself” to highlight that quality.
