Home Run!

April 29th, 2016

BSPN weighs in.

Jason Licht has a track record, so says BSPN.

Last year, picking America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, BSPN says the AC/DC-loving Bucs general manager belted a home run.

Last night, that power hitting streak continued, so says BSPN in this video, for more than one reason.

Ok, last night, after unwrapping our shiney new draft pick and finding Hargraves, was kinda like when your mom gives you one of those “need” christmas gifts and you unwrap a nice pack of underwear. After sleeping on it, I say what the hell, I needed new underwear. Our secondary was horrible last year and Hargraves can only help. Add in the trade and this does look like a good move. It is hard to look at the highlights though, He looks small even on a college team, but I am on board.

  3. Destro44 Says:

I was very happy with the trade down, that extra 4 was nice, and I felt better about Hargreaves at 11 with that 4th than would have at 9. Now with the was all the dlinemen have hung around we should find help there in round 2.

  4. Luther Says:

Right now the ball is heading towards the warning track. Does the ball make it over the wall or does it get snatched out of the air…tune in at 7:00pm. If we don’t get Ogbah, Dodd or Spence, it’s not a home run for me.

  5. Tbbucs3 Says:

Those complaining about this pick is comical, Elite upside in VH3 and we get an extra 4th rounder. And a lot of you guys would’ve rather had risked this pick on a project DL player(Spence/Rankins). I bet some of this crowd haven’t watched more 10 snaps of Hargreaves. His size actually fits his style of play just like grimes, Hargreaves is quick and smooth. Taller corners struggle with in breaking routes, this is why Banks can’t cover slants and digs. And I’m not saying VH3 is small either cause he’s not, Licht even said he looks thick. Same height and weighs more than Mike Jenkins, who while not being good, gotta admit he did look big out there.

  6. Walter Says:

I’m calling B.S. on this notion that Hargreaves has “elite upside,” Ramsey has that, not this guy. His ceiling is being a better than average corner, his floor is being a horrible bust.

  7. Luther Says:

Gator Fans crack me up. If Tebow was playing corner, you would be ok with the Bucs taking him. I don’t have a problem the the pick as long as we get one of the top 3 DE’s left. If that doesn’t happen, yes, I question our moves.

  8. Jameisbucsfan Says:

Trade up for Jalen Ramsey! Oh wait….. I woke up and we still drafted a gator. Oh well, time for him to prove me wrong. Go Bucs, now we just need to get Jameis’ friend Noah.

  9. 1nebuc Says:

    Im going to be honest…
I am a NOLE and my “ABSOLUTE HATE” for the LIZARDS wont allow me to be excited about this pick. However he is from Tampa and I’ve watched him play since little league so I will EVENTUALLY get on board. It will just take some time…

  10. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Dreambig

That was an excellent simile!!! Yes it was like opening a Christmas present that took care of a need not a want. Disappointing for some at first but in the long run we’ll be fine.

Considering the “difference” some have pointed out between Ramsey and VHGIII and I was a Ramsey supporter had he been available…I expect Ramsey to have a career that challenges another FSU DB Deion Sanders. Given all the hooplah from the Nole fans here Ramsey better be the next coming of Neon or they are simply homers.

  11. Walter Says:

Just watched some Amari Cooper and Kelvin Benjamin highlights. Man, they sure loved going up against VH3, now Kelvin will get to have him for lunch twice a year.

  12. mike Says:

Im a gator and watched every game. VH3 looked amazing 2 years ago. Last year he was so inconsistant. Tabor was our best cb last year. He got beat deep way too much in 2015. He was a great tackler and was great on slants and short passes. Almost all corners except the elite need time to develop, that why I would have gone D Line in the 1st round and take a corner in the 2nd or 3rd. Now we have to go D Line in the 2nd and can’t take the best player availible. Great to get a free 4th, but this pick is for 2017 or 2018.

  14. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

Some of u ppl will never be happy. I don’t know how I call your selfsame actual bucs fans if u don’t support them. I’ve watched him throught his whole career at US and I know a good football player when I see one. The bucs need turnovers and VH3 is a ball hawking DB that will provide that.

  15. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

My level of disappoint was mild. I still think he will be a very good player.

As opposed to my disappoint when Freeman was drafted, and I was thinking, “I think we just threw away the next 5 years”

    Completely different.

  16. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Now, that he’s here, I am a huge Van Hal…er, Vernon Hargreaves fan. Let’s get those INTs!!

  17. BigPoppaBuc Says:

I just hope he’s coachable. Like others here, my concern is that he’s peaked. He’s got skills, but is going to need to learn every nuance possible to survive in this league.

  18. iamkingsu Says:

I preferred Apple or William Jackson III if we were going to go corner because of I immediately thought of Julio Benjamin and Funchess. I’m a lifelong Noles fan and I think Ramsey is more Cromartie than primetime which is still not a bad nfl career. But if you told me before the combine and all the measurables that we got Hargreaves I would’ve been thrilled so im coming around on this pick after a having a night to sleep on it.

  19. Pickgrin Says:

If you can ball – that’s all that matters.

VH3 is going to be a good NFL player. Perhaps very good.

If you draft the guy who is widely called the best cover corner in a “deep” CB draft – then you came away with a good player. The extra 4th round pick was a nice bonus.

Just about everyone on here was saying pre-draft that they trust Jason Licht’s judgement. So you either trust him or you don’t. Too many are bitching and/or feeling underwhelmed about this pick.

Don’t worry Bucs Fans – Be Happy! Licht knows what he is doing. We got better last night. End of story.

Brent Grimes is an excellent CB – but time will soon catch up with him. In the meantime, VH3 will be stuck to Grimes like glue – learning the ropes of what it takes to be great in the NFL as an athletic yet somewhat vertically challenged CB. Hargreaves is just under 5-11″. Its not like he’s 5-8″. That 39″ vertical jump will more than make up for the couple extra inches of height that Hargreaves is supposedly lacking.

Welcome back home to Tampa Bay VH3!

And BTW – all this is coming from a Nole lover and Gator hater. And yet I welcome Hargreaves to the Bucs with open arms and a smile.

  20. ARGH_M8E Says:

Walter – Go have a coke and a smile:)

  21. DB55 Says:

My theory is that Licht was going to draft Jack Conklin but Tenn traded up and took our pick. picking up an extra 4th was smart on Licht’s part. Drafting a hometown kid who wants to be on the team is great.

I hope the uf v FSU rivalry runs thick in practice and these two push each other beyond limits.

That’s the best I’m going to be able to do on the positivity tip. Can I get an A for effort?

  22. iamkingsu Says:

I was more mad at the time that we only got a 4th for trading back knowing that Giants were going to take Floyd. Licht could’ve squeezed out a three. But I already was criticized last off season on here for talking about the watered down deals Licht make.

  23. Bucsfaninchina Says:

@ARGH_M8E Nice Richard Pryor reference 🙂

  24. rayjay1122 Says:

So, we get one of the better CB’s and get a higher 4th round pick. VH3 is not the best player in the draft but what did we expect from the #9 spot? SOme of you I think are such Gator haters that it would not matter how good he is. He is one of the better DB’s and he wanted to be a Buc. Some of you are just amazing to me with your negativity. We will still get needs addressed before the draft is done. Though some of you will not be happy with anything that we do in the draft.

    SMH at idiots!!!

  25. Bucsfaninchina Says:

Whiners dude. Ive never seen a fanbase nit pick and be so critical, more than Bucs fans.

Regarding Hargreves – Jaboo and Grimes are gonna be this guy’s best friends. A little in-state rivalry between two competitors will be fun to monitor, and Grimes is the template for any undersized CB to follow. Hargreaves also represents a very solid fallback for next hear, once both Verner and Banks may or may not be on the team. And what is all this “he will never be an elite #1 CB” talk. The dude is 20!!! And still lit up the college ranks. Its a bright beautiful day in Tampa Bay folks.

  26. DB55 Says:

If you want to see another negative fan base check out the Giants blogs. And they won a SB this decade. Let’s not forget this franchise hasn’t won more than 4 games in the last 3 years so every decision is open to debate.

  27. Bucsfaninchina Says:

Oh I havent forgotten about my lowly Bucs’ losing ways. But I know when to celebrate, and Licht’s performance last night is a cause for celebration.

  28. Pickgrin Says:

Bucsfaninchina – NOW do you see why it would have been beyond idiotic to draft Spence at #9? Sorry man – couldn’t resist the the “Told Ya”.

  29. Bucsfaninchina Says:

Lol Ill take it. I am a Spence homer, and should Licht pull off drafting him tonight (and cementing himself as a Buccaneers legend, having drafted two first round talents in the first two rounds) you will find me running around my house screaming with joy

  30. iamkingsu Says:

So Seattle didnt get a 3rd rounder for trading back later in the round?? I’m interested in getting the best deal possible not happy just to get “something” for a player. I said this last offseason though that we were setting precedents with the trades we were making last year smh

  31. 813bucboi Says:

@WALTER….vhg has way better ball skills technique and footwork than ramsey….why else would a cb be moving to safety….fsu vs uf has nothing to do with it…fans like yourself were just singing licht praise and chanting,”IN LICHT WE TRUST”….just because he didn’t select another Seminole you guys got your panties in a bundle….to be honest I was pissed at the fact last year when we took Winston and all the fsu fans were putting their 2cents in when Winston had major off and on field issues with his ints and character…I changed my mind about him and even bought his jersey after talking to my uncle who is a huge fsu fan….his words were simply….HE’S A BUC NOW…HE’S IN THE PROS…FORGET COLLEGE….the kid played over 30games…out of all those plays he’s played people question 3..vs kb vs cooper the bowl game….wow….ramsey got cooked and burnt just as much as vhg if not more….licht made the right and best pick so get on board or root for the panthers….GO BUCS!!!!

  32. SOEbuc Says:

DB55- Yea but if we had picked up Leonard Floyed, my bedside table would probably still be sitting in my TV screen this morning.

  33. DB55 Says:

    Soe

Rankins, Treadwell, Coleman or Tunsil would have been fine with me.

We could have drafted the best DT, S, WR on the board as none of those positions (that we need) had been selected. Instead we picked the 3rd CB off the board. But apparently he’s Revis, Ronde and Deion all rolled in one.

  34. 813bucboi Says:

@db55….salty I see…before the pick it was all, in licht we trust and if licht makes the pick i’ll sign off on it…now everyone(fsu fans or gator haters) are filling all salty…pepper up…he’s a buc….GO BUCS!!!

  35. Sim Says:

VHIII was a great pick for a number of reasons. First and foremost he is a really good football player. Second, he is NFL ready and will be an instant impact player. Third, he has the best ball skills of any DB in the draft and its not even close. Fourth, the Bucs continue to build a group of identifiable players that will draw fans in. They now have Jameis and VHII, both state school guys and both will help get RayJay packed. Plus, both are winners.

I agree with Joe that the Bucs need a pass rush, but I didn’t see a guy at #11 to get that done. Floyd was a reach and at that spot and now they;ll be in a position to get a quality DT, DE or LB with pick #2.

  36. Buc_The_World Says:

@ Walter you really sound like a fool when you use Amari Cooper and Kelvin Benjamin to downgrade Vernon Hargreaves. You would had made more sense if you said Donteea Dye or someone like that but you pick two of the best receivers to come out of the draft in the last two years who have burnt many of the corners they played in the NFL. What’s your point?
