Bucs Pick Offensive Tackle/Guard Caleb Benenoch

The Bucs’ 2016 Fifth-Round pick.

UPDATED 2:33 p.m. – Jason Licht drafted two offensive linemen in the fifth round back in 2014. Joe dubbed them the Milk Cartons because they M.I.A. as rookies.

One was cut, Kadeem Edwards, the other broke through last year, Kevin Pamphile.

Now the Bucs have drafted another O-line project, drafting Nigeria-born, UCLA junior tackle Caleb Benenoch (6-5, 305 pounds).

From UCLA’s website:

2015 – Started all 13 games along the offensive line (nine at tackle and four at guard) … Team leader with 35 consecutive starts … Team surrendered just 14 quarterback sacks, the second-lowest total in school history … Helped pave the way for Paul Perkins, the third-leading rusher in school history.

2014 – Started all 13 games at right tackle … Named honorable mention all-conference … Helped pave the way for the Pac-12’s leading rusher, Paul Perkins, who ran for the second-highest single-season rushing total in school history.

2013 – Started the last nine games of the season at right tackle … Named second-team Freshman All-America by 247 Sports … Presented the John Boncheff, Jr. Award for Rookie of the Year on offense at the team banquet.

Joe likes the experience, and the Bucs certainly have proven they can develop young linemen. Joe wonders if Ali Marpet’s offseason “procedure” had anything to do with this pick.

Guhhhhhh. Draft a WR. Try that kid from Germany.

  2. feelthepewterpower Says:

The kid ran a 4.98 at the combine…3rd best.

  3. wesley Says:

Good pick projected to go 3rd round.

  4. Bucfan951 Says:

    Good little project player

  5. feelthepewterpower Says:

I can see his speed working well with our zone blocking scheme that Koetter runs….he also scored well in the broad jump and has lengthy hands to keep defenders at bay.

  6. Joseph Mamma Says:

Yeah the German Wideout looks like he could turn out to be a beast.

  7. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Why would MArpet, who plays guard, have anything to do with drafting a right tackle???

They took him because our two RTs are 30+ and injury prone.

  8. BamaBuc Says:

Agree German WR and baby Gronk with our 6 rounders

  9. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Say hello to your future right tackle. He looks the same way Marpet did on his pre draft video last season.

  10. BuC LiFe Says:

Love this pic and Joe Kadeem Edwards signed with the Jags, so he actually hit on both .. Get Braxton Miller !!!!

  11. Guzzie Says:

Next get a WR like Mike Thomas Mo Boerhinger Charone Peake or S like Jeremy Cash Tyvis Powell you know what skip safety we can convert one of our 7 corners and draft FB Dan Vitale Glenn Gronkowski or Adam Janovich

  12. unbelievable Says:

@Bonzai, he can also play guard. Some think he’s better suited for Guard at the pro level, others think he’s a tackle.

  13. feelthepewterpower Says:

guard requires a bit more strength…probably a better fit at tackle…but man….I can see him pulling in space with his quickness and springing doug martin for a td (this time doug doesnt get caught from behind lol)

  14. robert Says:

    good pick.

  15. unbelievable Says:

yea he’s got some speed which I like!

  16. 1999Bucsfan Says:

  17. Trubucfan22 Says:

    This our future RT

Glad to see that Licht is the anti-Dom when it comes to OL. Dom drafted 1 5th round OL player in 5 years. Licht has drafted 5 OL players in 3 years.

This Benenoch guy looks like a nice developmental Tackle pick. He carried a late 3rd round grade coming in and I heard the announcers on ESPN say they were surprised he came out as a JR – that he was really starting to look like a good player last year and that if he stayed in school 1 more year – may well have been able to work his position up to a 2nd round pick or better.

If he’s got that much upside – then I’m glad we got him now for cheap and let the OLine coaches work with him for the next couple years and he might turn into a good starter or solid back up. I know they like how Pamphile has developed as a pretty solid multi role OL back up player and hope he continues to develop well enough to be a good starting RT when the time comes – This pick gives them another prospect to work with in the same vein who can play T or G. Can’t complain at all. Picks at this point – if they contribute in any meaningful way over the next 3-4 years – then the pick was a success.

  20. Buccfan37 Says:

He should feel right at home in this central west coast Florida weather. I like this pick.

  21. Tiny Tim Says:

    @Pick

Licht is the anti-Dom because he understand you pick the BPA regardless of position as oppose to reaching for need. Its as simple as that.

  22. Dave Pear Says:

    Great value pick.
Remember that Licht is drafted nag 3 years out.
He’s like the Bobby Fisher of NFL GM’s.
    Always thinking ahead.
    Gotta like that.

  23. Dave Pear Says:

    ^
Drafting not drafted nag.what ever that is.

  24. Buccfan37 Says:

I guess that is pronounced Ben-e-knock, not sure though.
