Bolting For Bosa

April 27th, 2016
"Jason, how the hell do you expect me to fix this defense if you don't draft a defensive end tomorrow night? What's the matter with you?

“Jason, how the hell do you expect me to fix this defense if you don’t draft a defensive end Thursday night? What’s the matter with you?”

When teams began trading up in recent weeks to obtain a quarterback, that meant better chances the Bucs were going to get a premier player, likely no worse than the second-best player at his position.

The more Joe is trying to read the tea leaves of what teams may draft from No. 3-8, the more Joe thinks Ohio State defensive end terror Joey Bosa just might fall to No. 9 where the Bucs are sitting.

If Joe was Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht, he couldn’t call in that pick quick enough.

In fact, Joe is hardly the lone person thinking this. BSPN Bucs beat man Mike DiRocco walks to the podium at the outfit’s Bristol studios and makes the pick for Licht.

And yes, he bolts for Bosa.

And, thus, the Bucs will finally have an edge rusher. The last time the Bucs had a double-digit sack guy at defensive end? Oh, that was another Big Ten dude like Bosa, Simeon Rice.

I don’t know if Bosa is gonna live up to his hype. I think he’s gonna be a quality player but not elite. I wouldn’t cry about picking him but id rather have Buckner or Lawson or even Dodd. But say Ramsey falls to 5 which I doubt but if so you have to consider trading up. Give Jamis his buddy and between those two and Kwon the team would be on its way.

  2. d-roca Says:

Draft bosa if hes there. Hes only 20 he will get bigger and better. Now to the morning cup of joe. Wow ill take another cup please

  3. PRBucFan Says:

lol please no to Bosa, dude is a product of that D

  4. d-roca Says:

    Pr
Why cant he be a product of our D?

  5. Jeagan1999 Says:

Bosa may jot be as explosive as JJ Watt, or quite as quick as a guy like Simeon Rice was…but Bosa has great strength, violent hands, good speed and a relentless motor! He is a true 3-down player who is strong against the run and pass! He did not have as many sacks last season at Ohio State, but his QB pressures went up as he harassed and harangued opposing passers! If he is there for the Bucs, our defense will be much better with him this season.

Then add a slot receiver in the 2nd, and a corner or safety in the 3rd.

  6. Onetrickpony Says:

aw snap, reload………aw snap, reload………aw snap, reload………….. the heck with it

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If he’s there, we should take him….

  8. Kevin Says:

Isnt noah spence the absolute best pure pass rusher in this draft??? Why is he ranked so low because of his past? Anyonc xan screw up when theyre young. If hes the best pass rusher he is who I want. Hes going to fall to a team who is already a contender.

  9. Chris Says:

Like i said i don’t think he’s gonna be a bust or anything, just not quite as good as everyone thinks. But if he’s there and so is Buckner, id take Buckner.

  10. WheresYourBuccaneers? Says:

  11. Tom Edrington Says:

Steve Duemig had interesting observations about Bosa yesterday……there’s a reason the guy is falling…..

  12. Wombat Says:

    Best player available…..

  13. DavidbigBucsFan Says:

One trick pony? Can play the run and pass how is that one trick? Now if he’s smart he learns to do all the moves like a wicked spin move no one will expect from him. Now if only he gets a haircut and get rid of that girlie headband. This aint the 80s! Plus the shoulder shrug can go it’s sooo cornball!

With Spence didn’t he have an addiction? Once an addict always an addict. Not trying to be mean but that’s the human mind for you.

  14. Dan Says:

Yes please! My only concern with Bosa is that he predominantly plays on the left. The same spot as Ayers. Rookie DE don’t typically have great seasons so I wouldn’t mind rotating the two. Or have Ayers slide inside on passing downs.

  15. Joseph Mamma Says:

Dude is no Simeon Rice that I can tell you, but we need better edge rushers period. I still can’t believe we got to sign Rice as a free agent. What the hell were the Cards thinking?

  16. CrustyCrab Says:

    @Tom
Bosa is not the only Buckeye to have a drug problem Noah Spence was released for testing positive a second time and Elliott was also reprimanded for the same drug.

  17. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

Bosa is a terrific talent and one of the very few DE’s worth a top ten pick. He may not of put up 5he sack numbers most 9f us would like but as long as he can put pressure the QB he will do just fine for us. Don’t forget we have the best DL coach in football so if anyone can improve Bosa’s technique and develop his pass rushing skills its coach Hayes.

  18. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

There will never be another Rice so u guys can let that go. Just like there will never be another Sapp or Brooks. They are a one in a generation of a kind player that don’t come around very often.

  19. Tom Edrington Says:

@Crusty Crab: I’m aware of that, Steve pointed out that it is a huge flag for most GMs

  20. FLBoyInDallas Says:

A guy who runs 4.84 isn’t going to be some consistent double-digit sack guy so you can stop dreaming. Maybe a couple times in his career he hits those numbers, maybe. Most likely he’ll average around 7 sacks a year over his career, and I don’t know if that’s #9 in the draft type of value.

For comparison Sapp ran 4.69 and Rice 4.66. Yeah, Michael Bennett ran a 5.13 but Bennett has played in 98 games in the NFL and has only 40.5 sacks which comes out to about 0.4 sacks per game or 6.4 sacks per 16-game season. And it took Bennett 8 seasons in the NFL before he hit double digits in a single season. Heck, even slow Adrian Clayborn ran a 4.78. So…there ya go. Draft Bosa at your peril.

  21. Waterboy Says:

Bosa only had 1 yr with double digit sacks in college I’m not If he’s as good as some say or just overhyped.

  22. Jrbdiddy Says:

Why are people so enamored with Buckner? Dude is not a great pass rusher. He sets the edge well against the run but he isn’t ever gonna be an elite pass rusher. If you watch his tape he mainly gets pressure on the qb and TFLs because he splits the T and G from time to time when the line slants. At the next level he will get washed inside more often then not because NFL offensive line coaches and players will stop his one trick. He rarely wins 1:1. He definitely isn’t a speed rush end evident by his 5.0 40 time. Fits better as a 3-4 DE.

  23. Tiny Tim Says:

Some experts say bosa is not a top 10 talent. Heres a suggestion, lets let licht do his job and let him draft who he and his scouting department feels is best for this team regardless of position. All these arm chair gms saying that licht should run to the podium if player x is there is just comical. As long as they do not draft a kicker, punter or qb at 9, I will be good with the pick. They know who they want right now and it may not be bosa.

  24. Waterboy Says:

I haven’t watched any game film yet but I’m not sure why I haven’t heard more talk about this guy:

    https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2016/03/18/draft-pff-scouting-report-shili/

  25. Greg Says:

They say his combine didnt help him and oh yeah he is rumored to have an issue with party drugs and was the only guy at the draft that refused the drug test. If you know over a year in advance of your most important interview of your life and that there will be a drug test and still refuse it? That’s all I need to know about him. He just gets talked about all day because he is from Ohio State.

  26. Buccfan37 Says:

Just legalize all drugs. If a player can play well on drugs where’s the problem? Stop making criminals out of players or “free” people for that matter who haven’t made someone a victim. The drug war is a war on all Americans.

  27. SOEbuc Says:

If I lived in Ohio I would have to be pretty drugged up also

  28. 813bucboi Says:

man after watching the mock draft on nfl network last night, im starting to wonder….mjd, ike taylor bucky brooks and another guy(forgot his name)were all surprised that carl davis picked bosa going to tampa with vhg still on the board…they all said they would rather draft vhg and then grab a de like e.ogbah in the second….they said they think bosa is a beneficiary of playing with elite talent….they all said they like his motor but think he will be average….then everyone sitting at the table which included Michael irving, mjd, Daniel Jeremy, bucky brooks, ike taylor, steve Mariucci and 2 other guys(former scouts) started to rave about vhg and his ability….they all stated how they think he is the best pure cb in the draft and no one was concerned about his height or speed…one thing they did mention which I knew but never really gave much thought was how they think vhg is the most nfl ready cb in the draft not only because of his technique, footwork and ball skills but because he was taught the position by his father who coaches dbs and linebackers and is also highly regarded in the college coaching circle…they had ramsey going 8th to Cleveland and vhg going 11th to Chicago…pairing him with kyle fuller would be nasty for the bears…after watching them talk about both bosa and vhg in depth, im hoping more and more for vhg at #9 with a de in the second and third round(ogbah and carl nassib)….GO BUCS!!!!

    DavidbigBucsFan

experimenting with a few party drugs is hardly an addiction nor does it mean he is or will always be an addict. that is one of the most ignorant and short sided comments on jbf and that takes a lot to make that list.

  30. tmaxcon Says:

    ^^^^^^ sighted not sided

  33. LUVMYBUCS Says:

*Trust your eyes from watching tape, not the 40 time.

There are many players who can run fast in a straight line but are not football players. In evaluating, there has to be a balance between 40 times and the actual playing of the game.

  34. Waterboy Says:

    @813bucboi

I agree. I don’t really love the idea of drafting Hargreaves but the more I listen to people that watch more football than me I’m starting to think I may be wrong about him. I think they could easily grab a guy like Calhoun, Ogbah or Dodd in the second rd to play DE and from what I’ve read Calhoun is the #1 rated edge rusher in this draft.

  35. CrustyCrab Says:

Without Noah Spence getting a lot of attention Bosa numbers dropped

  36. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    DE/OLB – Terrell Suggs | 40 yard dash time: 4.84 seconds | *106.5 Sacks

  37. HarlemBuc Says:

If 9th comes around im taking Spence over “Mob” Bosa… There I said it… I want Von Miller over kroy bierman

  38. HarlemBuc Says:

And Hargreaves is waaaaay to short to matter says the guy an inch smaller who hits harder

  39. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    DE Michael Strahan | 40 yard dash time: 4.89 | *141.5 Sacks
    * Similar to Michael Strahan, Bosa would be a strong side edge rusher in a 4-3

  40. Greg Says:

If the guy cant get clean for a drug test he knew about for a year how will he be clean for a random test? There are other options at DE even in the second round.

  41. uckinator Says:

Oh my gosh my golly, how Bosa likes his molly’s, now give him a few million, and then watch go off to oblivion. No GM wants a addict infecting his locker room. Drug is very hard to quit.

  42. Greg Says:

People need to stop acting desperate thats how mistakes are made. We need hel everywhere and there is no Simeon Rice in this draft. There are a couple Booger McFarlands though. Get a guy that wont get suspended like Bosa was in school. You can take chances with 3rd round pics not a top 10.

  43. Mnbucsfan Says:

I hope the Bucs could get Noah spence with there 2nd round pick

  44. pick6 Says:

agree with greg, kinda. teams that have stayed bad for years usually have a substantial mix of very talented college players with blatant red flags in their draft history. cleveland has been the king of this, with manziel, josh gordon, their young CB, just to name a few from the last half decade. for us, guys like tanard jackson (stabbed in college), mike williams (kicked off team), and daquan bowers (medical) have gone from penciled in long-term starters to non-factors in the league.

  45. 813bucboi Says:

@waterboy….”I think they could easily grab a guy like Calhoun, Ogbah or Dodd in the second rd to play DE and from what I’ve read Calhoun is the #1 rated edge rusher in this draft.”….I’ve read the same thing and completely agree…GO BUCS!!!

  46. CalBucsFan Says:

    @LUVMYBUCS

Thanks for the time comparisons, I’m with you on your conclusion too. A faster DE doesn’t mean a better DE as he may get manhandled by a lineman. Bosa has a skill set of working his way to the QB that isn’t measured by a stopwatch and is difficult to teach, it’s instinctual. If he’s there, take him without hesitation. If he’s not, I would take Rankins and let him & McCoy blow up the pocket.

  47. unbelievable Says:

Boss was partying and doing all same drugs as Spence. The difference is Spence was caught and had to change schools. And ecstasy is not something your are physically addicted to like heroin. So your “always an addict” line is BS

Spence is the most pure pass rusher but not big enough to handle the run. Bosa is a very good player but I don’t think he is the speed edge everyone is hoping for.

  48. Getaclue Says:

    Bosa=Jared Allen

  49. Buccfan37 Says:

Buccaneer Bonzai… Thanks for the compliment. How about the countries that have legalized drugs, like Portugal and a couple of South American and other European nations. Drug use has decreased there with legalization. I would guess your work is with the industrial, medical, pharmaceutical or police state complex. You don’t believe the US military is guarding the poppies in Afghanistan and the big banks are laundering that money from US sales of heroin?

  50. Mike Johnson Says:

Spence/Buckner.Dodd/Lawson..I don’t think we go wrong with either of these. I just get this funny feeling in my stomach about Bosa. I think he’s gonna play hard. But there is some hype with him. I like the motors on others a lot better.
The best pure pass rusher though is Spence. But if Bosa is there, I think Licht takes him.

  51. White Tiger Says:

A 3-4 DE is completely different than a 4-3 DE…Bosa is a poor mans JJ Watt. If you don’t have speed then you should either be explosive (look at long jump & Vertical), or powerful (vert & bench). JJ Watt is off the charts explosive and has power for days. His speed is only adequate. Watt revolutionizes the 3-4 DE position.

If we’re going to run more 3-4 schemes, and blend it with some 4-3 (or maybe some of that weird “amoeba” 3-3-5),Bosa would seemingly be a great fit, Especially listening to the players describe Mike Smith’s system, we almost have what we need. For a standard 3-4 system, Bosa would be overkill at the number 9 spot in the first round…and if we’re running elements of a 3-4 until Smith builds out his bench strength, but with an intent to commit to a 3-4 base, then I’d expect a man-cover corner/safety at the 9 spot (especially with our terrible DB situation, regardless of scheme). If we’re going to run a tweener system 3-4/4-3 hybrid…then Bosa makes sense.
