4th Round Pick Ryan Smith, Cornerback North Carolina Central

April 30th, 2016

Ryan Smith, Aris Scott

UPDATE: 12:57 p.m. The Bucs continue to bolster their secondary, which collectively was dreadful under Lovie Smith last year.

Man, the Bucs have some serious competition brewing after snatching Vernon Hargreaves in the first round Thursday night. Today they drafted Ryan Smith, cornerback out of North Carolina Central in the fourth round.

Per NationalFootballPost.com, Smith (5-11, 189 pounds) was an All-Mid-Eastern Conference selection and ran the 40-yard dash in 4.47 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine He’s considered an explosive athlete.

He broke school records for solo tackles (168) and kickoff return average (28.1 points).

Speaking to Bucs’ local media this afternoon, Smith said he only played one year of high school football because he was committed to basketball through his junior year. He added that he loves special teams and expects to make an impact there.

Of course, as a fourth-round pick, he’ll likely have to play special teams to wear a helmet on gamedays.

another undersized corner in a league where the better CBs are tall with long arms?

we thinking about putting him at safety?

  9. Tiny Tim Says:

Yea because 5’11 is really keeping revis from being a productive cb. Some of you are hillarious.

  10. Bucamania Says:

Just watched his pro day video. Catch the damn ball! I see why he’s not a WR.

  11. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

Seriously? A 7th corner when P.Cooper, K.J.Dillon, M.Killebrew and Billings plus H.Ridgeway on the board? What a terrible pick.

So much for getting a good DT. To help out GMC. Lol.

  12. buccfan305 Says:

He’s got worse hands than Mike Evans…needs to clean that up….we haven’t had a double digit pick guy since Big play Brian Kelly.

  13. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

Loved the picks so far until now. I don’t understand why we need ANOTHER corner when we have Conte as our starter at safety and 3 really good safety’s availible. Don’t get it. Cmon Licht. Really?

  14. buccfan305 Says:

    Maybe Donnie Abraham …..

  15. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

Excuse me while I toss sum furniture around. Licht and his small school fetishes. Should of known it was coming. Waste of a good pick imo.

  16. Tiny Tim Says:

Some of you clowns bashed licht because of the marpet pick last year because player x was still on the board. I said it last year and i will say it this year, you have absolutely no clue of what this player can do. You have not done 1% of the scouting and research licht has done. Cant we let this man get on the field before we say its a waste? Really, you arm chair gms look foolish.

  17. PRBucFan Says:

    Our future safety

Played safety a majority of his college career

  18. Buccfan37 Says:

North Carolina Central? Might as well been Rhode Island Central.

  19. MarineBucsFan Says:

The way i see it, this guy can give us good field position on a kick return or punt return then Winston gets 2 first downs and boom we in FG range.

  20. BamaBuc Says:

    Well said Tiny Tim!!!

  21. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

I was a big fan of the market pick for your info tiny terd. But wen u have 5 starterror caliber corners and below average safety like M.Wright and Conte and u have KJ Dillion and M.Killebrew still on the board I think I can say that wasn’t the greatest pick. Plus P.Cooper and A.Billings still availible? Those are bigger needs than a 6th corner that aint gonna see the field for a couple years at best. Cmon now.

  22. DB55 Says:

Didn’t Josh Norman come out of North Carolina Central?

  23. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

I’ll take Deone Bush over him any day

  24. PRBucFan Says:

^ When they plan on using him at his natural position again safety you can say it was a good pick. He blew up the combine and is no scrub.

  25. LifeOfABucFan Says:

I don’t care if the kid came from ITT Technical or Barbizon Modeling School, if he CAN BALL so what!!????

Love the film on him so far..and his on his Twitter he went crazy happy..

Love him already!! ( The mum in me coming out again) oh and he’s German born..so at least we can a German…lol…

    not can..*have a German*…

  28. Tiny Tim Says:

Yea im sure you were. Obviously you took my comment i made to the masses personally. Yea, im sure you didnt blast licht for taking sims two years ago when you thought we needed an olineman. Im sure you didnt blast him for picking an olineman late in that same draft in pamphile because your expert research said he was not goung to be good. I am sure you didnt blast donovan smith because the florida state tackle was still available. All these arguments were made in the past by posters such as your clueless self is making now. My point then and now is shut the h3ll up and let this man do his job because your 1% of research is miniscule to the work licht has put in. To call any pick a waste before they put on pads is foolish. But you can continue to look foolish if you like. Its your life.

  29. Tiny Tim Says:

    Fyi….carolina picked 3 dbs in a row.

  30. TheCollegeBuc Says:

Lmao you know you have a toxic fan base when commenters are belly-aching for a “double digit pick guy”. Good luck w/ that. Sorry Licht but you’ll need about three more all pros and two more HOFs on D before we’ll be happy. And for chrissakes get a corner with hands better than ME13 pls hahaha. @Joe this job must pay for itself with all the idiotic comments, the revenue is just bonus

  31. Buc15 Says:

I am so glad it’s up to our GM and not most of you clowns. How many of you bashed last years picks before they even stepped on the field? Tiny Tim said it best. Chill the f out please.

  32. Greg Says:

Personally, I’d rather have gotten Zack Sanchez, but CBS had this guy graded higher, so we’ll see, hope it works out.

  33. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

This young man’s value is his versatilty. Coach Koetter just said during his presser the young man played two years of CB and two years of safety. And that they’ve already decided he will start working with the safeties first. Watch his YouTube video that 4.4 speed really shows. He is who I am most intrigued by.

  34. Buccfan37 Says:

After consideration I’m positive and confident the Bucs improved after this draft. Go Bucs!
