AFC Head Coach Talks Jameis, Marcus

An AFC coach compares Jameis and Marcus Mariota

Maybe it wasn’t a fair question, but Joe had to ask.

Only one NFL head coach faced America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, and Marcus Mariota a combined total of three times last year.

That was Gus Bradley, the Jaguars’ defensive-minded head coach. He faced Mariota twice in division games (one win and one loss) and lost to the Bucs in Tampa.

Today at the NFL Owners Meetings in Boca Raton, Joe asked Bradley to say what it was like to prepare against them and to identify their differences.

“Wow. That’s a great question,” Bradley said. “Both have the ability to extend the play. One has got tremendous speed; that jumps out with you with Marcus.

“But they both have the ability to extend plays and make plays happen. Both play with very good poise. You know, sometimes you look at the accuracy, the decision-making that they make, and I think they’re coming into their own. The way that both teams went about doing it. Here you are trying to get a rookie to play like a six-year, seventh-year veteran. And how they brought him along and added to their play. I think you saw them both progress as the season went on.”

Yes, it sounds like Bradley would rate Mariota higher because of his speed.

As Joe wrote initially, it might not be a fair question, considering Bradley saw Mariota twice. Mariota also ran for an 87-yard touchdown against the Jaguars.

The best ability is availablity. MM will be out of the league before his rookie contract expires. He’s too fragile to be running the ball n the Tenn oline doesn’t protect him too well.

Woah DB55 its kinda early, might not wanna go an rustle any feathers this morning.

  3. mike Says:

MM looked really good at times. He has better speed and a better arm. At least in year 1, JW made better decisons.

  4. Jeagan1999 Says:

Both are going to be great NFL QB’s for a long time. This may be the next Brady vs. Manning rivalry!

  5. Waterboy Says:

Mariota has a quicker release and seemed more accurate on the short quick forming routes but I wouldn’t agree that he has a better arm than Winston. He had a good rookie season and played much better than I expected but I need to see how how he responds when teams stop worrying about him as a running threat and start sitting on those 3-4 passing routes that they like to throw.

  6. Stanglassman Says:

Wow, for such a great question he really gave you a bland answer with zero insight. I think any ‘joe’ watching the games could have come up with that one.

  7. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Bradley knows he has to play MM twice a year, no point in ruffling feathers.

  8. carload Says:

Whomever thinks MM is fragile and bounced out of the league must not have followed his career to close , dude started almost everyone of his college games in 3 years. He is a pocket passer that can move .

  9. Deminion Says:

Better arm and accuracy than JW??? u crazy JW had his share of bone head decisions.. but he made some throws that only the elite qbs can make… MM was decent if u watch his game its short stuff show me where he threaded a needle like JW jus sayin

  10. Supersam Says:

Id still pick Mariota over Winston any day. Jus my opinion.

  11. cmurda Says:

    @ Mike,

Mariota has a better arm. Ummm, no. JW has by far the stronger, better arm. Mariota’s sole criticism has always been his arm strength and ability to get the ball downfield. My prediction is we made the right decision and mariota will struggle with injuries as a dual threat QB a la RG3.

Wow Sam we are all truly shocked by your statement.

I think you’re in the wrong site: https://m.facebook.com/mariotafanpage/

I’d still pick JW over Mariota any day.

  14. BigHogHaynes Says:

JAMIES will become like Payton&Brady, playing the game with Mind, Body&Soul!

  15. salish_seamonster Says:

Winston doesn’t look as smooth getting it done as Mariota because of the athletic difference. Mariota may even outshine Winston statistically over the course of their careers, but Winston has an attitude that does not accept losing, and that might be the thing that makes Winston a better QB over the long term.

  16. The Other Side of the Coin Says:

The jury is pretty much in on Winston. He is a franchise quarterback. Mariota, while good, has yet to demonstrate that. It’s not so much a matter of skills. Both have a lot in their own way. It’s leadership that sets Winston apart, and worthy of the franchise tag. Bucs made the right choice.

  17. mike Says:

@cmurda… MM’s knock was never his arm. He threw with a higher velocity at the combine than jw. He has a much quicker release. The knock on MM was / is, what happens when hes not in a gadget offense when he only needs to make one read and he can run any time. So far I think both teams have a great qb, but only time will tell.

And that’s why you’re not in the NFL GM business.

  19. Buc since '74 Says:

Did you guys see how well Mariota played at the Pro Bowl?

    Oh….. too soon?

  20. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    MM threw at 56 mph
    Jameis was at 55 mph

The difference is Jameis has Manning like ability to comprehend multi pro-style offenses and defenses, and is also, simply, a superior leader.

I see Jameis, in his first offseason of not playing baseball or prepping for the draft, working on the speed of release, etc. Will MM work on his deficiencies? Sure. But, I’ll put my $ on JW being the long-term better player. No offense to MM. I worry about the ability of his body to withstand the beating. He already hurt his knee as a rookie. What happens when he loses his quickness?

  21. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

LWD you already know. He becomes RG3.

  22. Joseph Mamma Says:

Yeah but how do they both compare to Josh Freeman, that is the question that should have been asked? Also I would like to know if Gus thinks Jameis has an “NFL” body?

  23. Tom S. Says:

I love how Joe felt the need to include Bradley’s comment about his question in the quote. I look forward to the followup post “Gus Bradley REALLY REALLY enjoys Joe’s questions”

You giving him too much credit, more like Jake Locker.

  25. HIRE JIMBO Says:

    Marcus Mariota = RG4

  26. Pick6 Says:

Too soon to draw any conclusions, but I don’t think you could have gotten him to say that the guy he might face twice a year for a long time is the lesser QB.
