Statement From Doug Martin

March 10th, 2016
doug martin 0310

Explains his love of Tampa Bay.

Late yesterday afternoon, Bucs fans from near and far let out a collective giant sigh of relief. Everyone’s favorite Muscle Hamster was back with the Bucs.

The NFL’s second-leading rusher re-signed and will return for the 2016 season and, hopefully, beyond. And that’s good news.

Martin, of course, is humble. He’s not much of a vocal guy and his interviews border on painful. So he issued a statement last night on social media that Joe can only guess is meant for Bucs fans.

So Joe decided to pass it along because it is pretty cool.

  2. Evo Says:

Hey Joe’s. You are aware that Doug actually keeps track of who still calls him the muscle hamster right? Just saying! Keep calling him that and he will end up giving thr the cold shoulder when it’s time for an interview. He’s done it to certain national and local people already

  3. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

  7. GerbilsGoneWild Says:

Great statement. It’s nice to not see arrogance in an NFL player for a change. JW, struck me the same way with his demeanor.

  8. Buc Neckid Says:

There are many different faces of Leadership
That right there is a good one

  9. a Says:

  10. Kevin Says:

The guys hates muscle hampster. After two years of requesting people still insist on using the musccle hampster. He even signed it the dougernaut. Give the guy a little respect he asking nicley.

  11. tdtb2015 Says:

Awesome! We want more players like Doug. Class Act!

  12. Eric Says:

For that kind of dough I would not care if they nicknamed me possum’s pecker.

  13. mdsbuc Says:

    Money Hamster!

  14. Rrsrq Says:

Who was the last offensive player the Bucs rewarded in a second contract, Donald Penn?

  15. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Rrsrq

Luke Stocker signed a 3 year deal last year!!

As for DM22, congratulations on signing the contract most likely for the rest of his career! I hope he stays in shape and health as he earns every penny of his contract!!

  16. James Walker Says:

This sends a good message to the locker room, especially players like Mike Evans and Winston.

  17. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Class act…it’s so refreshing to see humility and genuine fan appreciation in the NFL today. Rip up opposing defenses Muscl..er, um Dougernaut!

  18. BoJim Says:

That was a really nice statement. I’ve always liked ‘Muscle Hamster’ but I think he’s earned being called ‘Dougernaut’. So glad he’s a Buc!!

  19. DallasBuc Says:

Jason Licht passes the first real test in the post incompetent Lovie Smith era. Congratulations GM Jason Licht. I look forward to more sound decisions from you to help drown out your record if the last two dreadful years of free agency.
Licht struck a fair deal with Martin and I can now enjoy the rest of the offseason.

  20. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    Now that was funny Eric☺..

  21. ElioT Says:

Why do you Joes have to be d-bags and use the old nickname?

    So stupid…

  22. Bob in Valrico Says:

    @Eric
I can think of a lot of names but Possum ‘s Peker isn’t one of them. They play dead all the time.

  23. Bob in Valrico Says:

Good letter to fans and teammates. He was rewarded for last year and has a fire in his his belly to prove he deserves it.With the addition our new road grader it doesn’t look like the four verticals will be in play as much as we thought.
It is a good thing that Koetter convinced Lovie to keep Doug last year.Team is
    headed in right direction.

  24. Guzzie Says:

hope he does well, still need to draft a young back to groom, cj Prosise or Daniel Lasco

  25. bucs4life86 Says:

We will Continue to keep our core players in tact and let them develop and grow together. Licht has brung the blue print over from New England and knows how to build a winning franchise from the ground up. No more trying to buy all your good players in free agency like the Jaguars, dolphins and Raiders. Look how far it has gotten them. (Nowhere). U don’t see teams like the Pats and the seahawks going crazy on the first couple days of FA. U sign a couple 2nd tiers guys to fill holes and build your team thru the draft. It may be boring at this time of the year for sum BUC fans, but get used to it cause this is how it will be from now on. And Licht has already showed that he knows how to draft the right players so I think we are Def headed in the right direction. BUC fans should be very exited for the future. Because it is looking very bright.

  26. BigHogHaynes Says:

I hope you out preform this contract and make them come back to the table after two years! GO DOUGERNAUGHT!!0

  27. Guzzie Says:

Bucs4life….this is how it’s gonna be for now on…..until the next 4-12 season and we crucify licht for being too passive in FA or bash him on his poor FA record, hope he succeeds, but our coach is not Belicheck, and most of NE people become flunkies outside NE, but hopefully we sign another backup today

  28. MadMax Says:

This is EXACTLY why I wanted us to get this deal done and not see him somewhere else! Nothing but mad respect for Dougie as a player AND a Man. Thanks for making everyone happy Licht. Now we dont have to worry about spending a 1st or 2nd on RB.

  29. Joe Says:

Hey Joe’s. You are aware that Doug actually keeps track of who still calls him the muscle hamster right? Just saying! Keep calling him that and he will end up giving thr the cold shoulder when it’s time for an interview. He’s done it to certain national and local people already

Oh, well. No one tells Joe what he can and cannot write. “Muscle Hamster” may be the greatest nickname in sports. If Doug Martin doesn’t want to talk to Joe — never had any issue before — then so be it. Joe has never heard of or seen him shut down any reporter.

Let Joe be clear: He has zero issue with Martin. Has a good relationship with him.

  30. Buccfan37 Says:

Doug wanted to stay with the Bucs more than he hates his famous nickname. This is Muscle Hampster Country.

  31. cmurda Says:

That was amazing Dougernaut ( He really does hate Muscle Hamster). I take back everything I said about not going over 7 mill per year for Dougie.

P.S. Joe, I’m pretty sure Dougie doesn’t like the nickname but he isn’t going to cut you off because of it. The man doesn’t seem to be that petty. Also, he can’t blame us for calling him Muscle Hamster. It’s one of the best nicknames ever.

  32. Birdman Says:

Joe your attitude pains me. If anyone can tell you what you can and cant call him, it would be the dude that youre trying to make your living off of. I know youre covering the Bucs and not Martin explicity, but have some respect man.

  33. PRBucFan Says:

lol He get’s visibly angry when he hears that nickname and actually did not even allow them to say it in his live interview on nil network with him.

Hope he doesn’t read this, cause even though you don’t care it matters to him and he’s outright said he feels it’s disrespectful.
