Liking The Brent Grimes Signing

Yes, Brent Grimes turns 33 in July. Yes, he’s only 5-10.

But to read Greg Bedard’s breakdown of the Bucs signing the Pro Bowl corner, it was a very smart move. That’s what the SI.com football writer/analyst typed when analyzing the transaction.

In short, Bedard says Grimes still has gas left in the tank and grades the signing with a B+.

Buccaneers sign CB Brent Grimes

Details: Two-year deal. After being released by the Dolphins, the veteran cornerback found a home on the other side of the state. Grimes, entering his 10th season, is still an upper-echelon cover corner who has good ball skills and is not afraid to mix it up physically. He’ll turn 33 in July, so the worry is that he’ll drop off quickly. But the Bucs are such a mess in the secondary, he’s very much a needed addition. Grade: B+

Well, the Bucs are a mess in the secondary because a certain coach now working for a low-rung Big Ten school made them a mess. Simple as that.

Joe fully expects a rebound from Johnthan Banks and perhaps a rebirth of Alterraun Verner. It should tell Bucs fans something that the Bucs decided to keep Verner (for now) despite his hefty $6.75 million salary for 2016.

    You misspelled Miko…

The Grimes signing is good. This guy will bring a certain needed toughness to our secondary. Its the baggage which accompanies the signing that could bring down the locker room once its starts. This TMZ want to be starlet spreads the kind of rhetoric that pulls teams apart.

I would rather us resign s.moore…I would’ve wanted grimes back in 2012 but i’ll see…GO BUCS!!!!

Darrel Green did it to he was like 50. I trust this cat still got ample game left in him.

  9. Buccfan37 Says:

I like the Grimes addition also.

  10. Tom S. Says:

I like the Ayers signing more than the Grimes addition purely because 33 is not an age you want your newest 8 million dollar a year corner to be regardless of what they accomplished in the past. Champ Bailey started to really recede around that time, Charles Woodson was freelancing more as a safety at that age, Aeneas Williams had his first major injury at 34 before finishing his career as a safety. It’s very hard to expect Grimes to match his production of the past few years over the next two.

  11. Trubucfan22 Says:

If grimes does age quickly after this season, then we have a huge need at Safety that he could fill. Win/win.

  12. JAB83 Says:

Actually it seems to makes sense… Would not be shocked if he is here to compete at safety as well…. All depends on camp and what THE REAL COACH SMITH thinks of the current talent at CB…

And yes I am dubbing Mike Smith “The Real Coach Smith”…. Feel free to run with it Joes….

I like all these veteran signings. It’s a way to mentor their rookies once drafted. We will get 1 or 2 of each at DE and CB. The same way VJAX is mentoring ME. Shoot we may grab Hargreaves after all. Being a 5’10” CB. I much rather get the 6’1″ CB projected to Bucs with 4.3 speed.
