“He Got Lucky Last Year”

The football gods shined on America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, last year.

Just look at how Jameis, especially his ankles, got absolutely beaten up in preseason but didn’t miss any time.

The Bucs dodged serious bullets there, before the offensive line was shaken up and then jelled beautifully.

But there is no denying Jameis likes testing fate. Too often — and too needlessly — Jameis sacrificed his body. Eventually, throwing blocks will catch up to him, in addition to his win-at-all-costs approach to the game.

Joe’s not saying Jameis should play scared, but it would help if he got a little smarter — and built up a body to match his game.

ProFootballTalk.com guru and ultimate NFL insider Mike Florio ranted on this topic yesterday, via PFT Live on NBC Sports Radio.

“He needs to devote himself to getting an NFL body, and he knows it,” Florio said. “He acknowledged it after going to the Pro Bowl, that he needs to get his body into a better overall physical condition.

“And another reason why he needs to do what he can to build up his body, he plays very physically. He is not afraid to stick his head in there when he’s running the ball. He’s not afraid to go make the tackle when there’s an interception. So the more you build yourself up, the more you guard yourself against that inevitable injury.

“He got lucky last year. Because as reckless as he can be, we preach this to all young quarterbacks, avoid contact at all costs. The more you get hit, eventually, you’re going to get hurt. With Jameis Winston, if you can get your body looking more like the typical NFL player, especially a skill position guy, a quarterback, a younger quarterback, then maybe you’re going to guard yourself against those injuries that are inevitable if you keep running into the end zone head first, or putting your head down and absorbing contact.”

Joe agrees with Florio wholeheartedly.

And it seems Dirk Koetter does, too. Later this week, Joe will share Koetter’s candid takes on Jameis’ body delivered at the NFL Scouting Combine.

And people openly question why Glennon is still here.

  2. Ben the Ga Buc Says:

I think he will. He seems to be the kind of kid who makes things happen when he sets out to do so.

  3. Bo Says:

Jameis is “country strong”!!! Ask Bo Jackson who is also from Bessamer.. Bo never worked out and was the strongest dude on the team. That’s country strong.

  4. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Preach Bo some don’t quite get it.

  5. Tampa Tony Says:

I’d rather he be more accurate than be country sckrong…

  6. ArmandG Says:

I concur: Bo “Jameis is “country strong”!!! Ask Bo Jackson who is also from Bessamer.. Bo never worked out and was the strongest dude on the team. That’s country strong.”

  7. DB55 Says:

He should get his body more like mariota that way he can avoid injuries all together. But seriously his ankle bothered him all season. In St. Louis it was very noticeable. But one thing I never understood is why we never ran the qb sneak. He is 6’4″ 230, I think he can fall forward for a yard.

  8. Bob in Valrico Says:

@DB55 Lovie was usually punting or trying a field goal in those situations.

  9. mike Says:

Bo didn’t have a 45 year olds body in his 20’s.

  10. Cat Says:

Florio is obsessed with Jameis’ body. I remember when he questioned whether he had the athleticism to play in the NFL. I’d rather my QB watch film than work on getting a six pack.

  11. Pickgrin Says:

” if you keep running into the end zone head first”

I doubt Jameis will ever quit doing this. Its his instinct. Its part of his will to win no matter what.
If the game is on the line – Winston is going to do what it takes to score and win. And if that means taking off to daylight and diving for the end zone – then he’s going to do it.

Why would you want to try to coach that out of him?

Yea- the NFL is rough. But you know when a lot of injuries happen? When a player has let up – when they are not playing strong. When a player is going full boar with maximum intensity to get into the end zone – he rarely gets hurt that way.

So yea – play smart – don’t do it too often – don’t take unnecessary risks – but if the drive or the game is on the line and you see an opportunity – Go get that 1st down or TD young Jedi.

  12. OAR Says:

“country strong”….of course it depends on what country you are talking about.

  13. Mike Johnson Says:

Me think Jameis only knows one way to play. That’s all out and taking whatever risk comes. That may work your 1st 2 to 3 yrs. But in the league (Not For Long) of vicious hits, he’s bound to get his sooner than later. No..I’m not wishing it. Its justa fact..like losing in Vegas is a fact! If we don’t get help at the RB position. And I mean on the level of Dougie was giving..Look for Winston to take even more risk to get 1st downs. And this does not bide well for him.
Russian Roulette is great..until Your bullet comes around!!!

  14. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Careful. Building up arm strength might effect his deep ball accuracy…

  15. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

JOE, any hints that a team has called regarding Glennon?

  16. OAR Says:

Paraguay strong or Kazakhstan strong are probably not where a football player’s body should be.

  17. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

Just imagine Jameis still having all of his great traits but being able to run like Tebow.

  18. James Walker Says:

There is a difference between “gym-rat strong” and “wilderness strong” Watch “Alone in the Wilderness”, the story of Dick Proenneke building a cabin in the wilderness of Alaska using only basic hand tools. Most NFL players would be dead by midwinter.

  19. Bucsfanman Says:

“Country strong, gym-rat strong”? What the heck are you talking about?! This may be the dumbest thread I’ve ever read!
    Bo didn’t work out?!
    Seriously?!

  20. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

@mike- do you recall how Tom Brady’s body looked at his combine. Dude fairing pretty well wouldn’t you say.

Love love love Alone in the Wilderness. I’m Mesmerized by his story. Dude was cut too, sawing all that lumber by hand will gets you some guns. Ha, I thought I was the only person on earth to see that documentary. Thanks PBS.

  22. DB55 Says:

    James walker

    There’s a part 2, if you didn’t know.

  23. oxycondoms Says:

tom brady is the last name you want to bring up when making a backwards comment about the importance of taking care of your body. Brady is doing well because he takes his diet and fitness very seriously , as a professional should. thats what separates him at his age from the rest of the field. the day jameis starts to take on this type of mindset there will be no stopping until then he is just cheating his potential

  24. biff barker Says:

This country strong is crap. I want winning strong. Think Brett Farve.

Sweating out quarts of that hideous swill served at the Ol’ Sombrero, watching him beat us game in, game out.

A QB needs to stick his head in there when a game is on the line. I was critical of some aspects of Winston’s game, but he’s no wuss. Teams feed on that toughness,

  25. Nuc if u Buc Says:

Bo was country boy corn fed strong, and his career ended in injury….

  26. mike Says:

@nole sat… i do . He looked like jameis without the gut. He worked really hard at it, sounds like jameis will do the same.

  27. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Roddy White was released. Sign’em?

  28. mike Says:

@luvmybucs… please no! He is done! It would be about as good as when we signed Tim Brown.

  29. William Walls Says:

    “Country strong?” Seriously?

  30. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    mike

    Lol, just checkin’

  31. DB55 Says:

Roddy White is better than 75% of our receiving core. I think him coming to TB is pretty much a garuntee unless bellicheat calls.

  32. Pickgrin Says:

    “Teams feed on that toughness,”

    Exactly Biff

  33. Pickgrin Says:

Roddy White would be an excellent pick up if the price is right.

  34. Mike Johnson Says:

Lets welcome the..Atlanta Buccaneers! I could be wrong But they never won a superbowl with those players..or coaches.

  35. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

Any of you that don’t know what “country strong” is or don’t believe in it have never met a Rancher. I know 60 yr old men that you would Not want to tangle with that have never lifted a weight and aren’t trained fighters. But they are so f-ing strong that if they get their hands on you then you are through. Im not saying Jameis is “country strong” and I’m not saying he isn’t. I’m just saying that “country strong” exists.

  36. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

Help me out guys……..when did Mike Johnson get here?

  37. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Bucs SB with Jameis

right after his hero, lovie, was fired!!!

  38. The Buc Realist Says:

or at least that was when he changed his screen name!!!

  39. Mike Johnson Says:

    1960 sir.

  40. Mike Johnson Says:

YOU be my hero Buc Realist. Lovie is gone. Kicking back drinkin cold ones collecting millions You and I will never see. So much for YOUR..Lovie Fetish.

  41. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

Thanks Realist. He is new to me.

  42. Pickgrin Says:

quite the johnson isn’t he Bucgator?

  43. Kevin Says:

He said he will get in shape and work on his footwork and I believe he will…

Alex Mack is now available but Im sure a contender will lure him in before yhe bucs can. That guy wants to win. We need to show we can win before we can get guys who want to wun to come here

  44. Dewey Selmon Says:

#3 isn’t lucky, good things happen to good people. I would give Roddy a chance, he knows Dirks system and can help Bell develop and cover for a Vjax injury.

  45. unbelievable Says:

Hey realist don’t worry, he told me I have a Lovie fetish in another thread too.

Pretty sure he is either 14 years old, or schizophrenic. Maybe both?

  46. Mike Johnson Says:

Ham..you are correct again there Unbelievable. You know something there pal….You are truly..unbelievable! What a Believable name handle.

  47. Rusty Says:

I remember we tried to change Freeman’s style of play. Didn’t work out so well. I say, let him be himself.

  48. Bucwylde Says:

I see what you did there Pickgrin 🙂

  49. C55 Says:

Yea cause tom Brady, Aron Rodgers, drew Bree’s, Ben rothlisberger are all just jacked up and shredded . smh
And @ db55 comment Winston should build his body like mariota so he doesn’t get hurt . hmm how did that work out for mariota last yr ? What he miss 2? 3? Games . He just needs to watch his weight and keep doing what he does.
