Deeper Look At Daryl Smith

March 18th, 2016

Strong resumé.

The more Joe looks at this signing yesterday, the more Joe thinks the acquisition of linebacker Daryl Smith may be the sleeper of the free agent season.

Per the Bucs, since Smith arrived in Baltimore in 2013, he ranks fifth in the NFL in total tackles at 371. In that same span, he has the second-most passes defended. Only one other linebacker has more. His name? Lavonte David.

The Bucs multimedia maven Scott Smith put out an interesting factoid last night on Twitter that speaks of Smith’s abilities. He is one of two linebackers since 2004 to have over 1,000 tackles and 30 sacks. The other is Karlos Dansby.

Is Smith a spring chicken? No. But until the Bucs draft and develop a stongside linebacker, he’ll do.

I hope we draft deion jones from lsu in round 3…I wouldn’t mind miles jack at #9 if bosa, Hargreaves and Stanley are gone…GO BUCS!!!

  2. Biff Barker Says:

Now we know the rationale for sending Lansanah to the curb. Maybe Carter too.

  3. Jbeachbuc Says:

Having lived in JAX for many years, because of him playing in Jax, I’ve known him to be one of the most underrated and overlooked LB’s for years. Haven’t seen him play since he departed the Jags tho…

  4. K2 Says:

Improved an already very strong linebacking group…like how this is taking shape.

  5. Pickgrin Says:

Daryl Smith’s #s the last 3 years are eye opening for an “older” player. Seems he has not lost a step at all – or if he has he’s making up for it with his smarts like DB55 did the last couple years he was playing. Great pick up!

Question – what will the back of this guy’s jersey read? We already have a J. Smith at DE and a D. Smith at LT.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I wonder what Smith would have thought of us bringing in Smith to coach Smith?

I also really, really wonder what Miko thinks?

  7. BucsfanMe Says:

Assuming the 4-3 base defense, well be starting Kwon, David, and Smith. Is there a better case to be made for LB core with any other team? I cant think of anyone close. Joe?

  8. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Good pickup, and another solid, solid vet. If Licht and his guys can keep hitting a good percentage in the draft, the young athleticism should thrive under good veteran leadership.

  9. the real Bucobruce Says:

it takes a great man to retract from his original statements good job Joe!!Tampaaaaaa

  10. JAB83 Says:

    @Joe….

Why does this matter we are gonna lose anyways so why not save the money???

Better question….. Does this change your mind about MG8???

Better yet…. Meaningless games mean what???

Joe I hate to say it because I like your site…. But I am going to bash all of you Joes in to sloppy joes if you don’t apologize for your MG8 article… Not because your point was wrong but because you took a good point and offended me with a stupid point. That in all honesty was wrong and well made you sound like a we taught it fool….

That said maybe the only reason you made the point is because all you Joes lack an education hirer than 8th grade….

It simple Joe… Just say sorry and restate your point cause it was a valid one at the time..

    MAYBE NOT SO MUCH NOW????

    What say you “SLOPPY JOES”…

And yes that is your new names for now on…. #1 reason???? ” The Real Coach Smith” said so. (Perhapps) When he read your article… I won’t repeat what else he said….

    @JAB83
Shut up cry baby. If you don’t like what the joes say go to Buccaneers.com to get your 1 article every 3 days And take Mike Johnson with you

  12. 74 bucs fan Says:

    JAB83 – you’re a jackass! Simple as that! Jackass.

  13. William Walls Says:

Also, if you’re planning on having a defensive scheme that can shift on the fly from a 4-3 to a 3-4, you’d better have 4 solid linebackers. Daryl Smith definitely makes that goal much more reachable.

  14. mike10 Says:

I would take Myles Jack in a heart beat

  15. Rod Munch Says:

Legit question, but if he’s so good and everyone says he’s good and still playing well – then why was he spitting time last year and why did the team cut him when his cap hit of $3.5mil is no longer a large number. I don’t know, I’m just asking.

  16. DallasBuc Says:

What the sht is JAB83 all panty bunched over? Does he really expect an apology for something?
    Bizarre
