Bucs Hunting Right Tackle Mitchell Schwartz

Coach Warhop reunion?

Coach Warhop reunion?

Cue the misguided stat geeks and others who think the Bucs don’t know what they have in Demar Dotson.

Per Cleveland.com, the Bucs are hunting and sniffing the representatives of Browns right tackle Mitchell Schwartz. The 26 year old is considered among in the top tier of NFL starters at the position.

He was a second-round pick of the Browns in 2012.

Interesting, he played for Bucs offensive line coach George Warhop in Cleveland, and he was a “Cal” guy in college for former offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford.

Yes, the Bucs have Dotston and veteran Gosder Cherilus. But Schwartz represents an upgrade in talent and longevity.

  1. HIRE JIMBO Says:

HELL YES, we will have our “bookend” OTs for the next 5 years. I’m all for it

  2. Lord Says:

Please. Sign him. Cut Godser and his 4.5 million. Trade Dotson for a 4th. Draft developmental tackle with that pick for depth

  3. tmaxcon Says:

He would be a great pickup… Next go get Sanu or Kearse

  4. Kalind Says:

I’d rather spend that money on someone like Alex Boone, or Kelechi, but this isn’t exactly a bad idea.

  5. tmaxcon Says:

    Lord

sorry but dotson has ZERO trade value certainly not a 4th

  6. Bob in valrico Says:

Anything that gives Winston more time
And lf he can handle blitzing linebackers
    is very good thing.

  7. Pickgrin Says:

If Mitchell comes here – I’m guessing Cherilus and his $4.5M contract for this year would be jettisoned – and that Dotson and his $1.75M cost would be retained for competition and solid yet inexpensive back-up status.

Oh yeah! How bout adding Incognito at Guard too? Then re-sign Martin, and add Mario Williams. Then get Bosa in Round 1 and Braxton Miller in round 2! Watch the wins pile up in 2016!

  10. tmaxcon Says:

    Jeagan1999

man that would be awesome…. i like the way you are thinking…

  11. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

Don’t forget guys that Alex Mack isn’t happy in Cleveland either.

  12. gotbbucs Says:

Yes please. He’s a top 5 right tackle. Spend 3/4 of our cap space on our guys up front on both sides of the ball.

  13. macabee Says:

Mitchell Schwartz, OT, Cleveland Browns, 26

ProFootballFocus.com gave Schwartz It’s best rating at right tackle. Schwartz ranks seventh among all tackles, first among those on the right side. He has given up 12 total pressures in 260 drop backs, about one in every 22 plays. Denver’s Von Miller leads the league in pressures. Against Schwartz, he got just one pressure. Schwartz is not a dominant run blocker, but he’s better than average, ranking ninth in the league at his position.

Schwartz is younger and a definite improvement over both Dotson and Cherilus. We keep one, but not both. The decision will be made in training camp if not sooner!

good day sir… You’re dead on protect the investment.

    buc priorities

    1. Protect Winston
    2. Get Winston legit weapons not projects or potential weapons
    3. See Number 1

I’d like to see Smith moved to guard and a stud LT brought in but I am in the minority on that I believe.

  15. James Walker Says:

You got to keep talent around in case of injury. Don’t just dump decent players because someone better comes in. If he is injured week one then what?

  16. gotbbucs Says:

    @Bucs SB

Mack is a free agent too. He opted out of his contract in Cleveland. I would prefer Schwartz to Mack anyway.

  17. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

    Braxton Miller in the second???????????
Have you bumped your head Jeagan?

  18. salish_seamonster Says:

GO get him and a decent interior lineman then we don’t have to draft OL.

ALL good suggestion up above..some an incredible dream but not impossible!

  26. salish_seamonster Says:

A little dose of reality ought to be mixed in with your free agent fantasy cocktails. It’s just ludicrous nonsense if it has no chance of happening.

  27. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    tmaxcon

Remember Asamoah is coming off a hip injury (recovered after a year off)
So he won’t break the bank.

    +

Alex Boone is seeking a contract in the $6-$7 million annually

Plus your saving what? $4.5 by releasing Gosder Cherilus

    Yeah It can happen

  28. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    NJBucsFan

    I can respect that

  29. tmaxcon Says:

    salish_seamonster

you maybe right but a lot of nonsense is posted here every day that is why people come back. The bucs have cap space and both boone and swchartz are available. Protecting winston should be the teams top priority so from a business standpoint LUVMYBUCS is correct…

The dumbest scenarios posted here frequently are the ones that say Glennon is worth a 2nd round pick when in reality it’s more like a 5th or 6th at best….

  30. Defense Rules Says:

Aaah yes, tis the season of rumors and speculation. The only Bucs news I think we know for sure today is that Logan Mankins has retired, so we’re minus 1 at this point. And oh ya, that Doug Martin is being looked at by at least 6 other teams. Or is that a rumor; hard to keep track sometimes.

  31. salish_seamonster Says:

Everything is a rumor until papers are signed. You can’t trust media reporting between now and the draft. It’s all the NFL offseason hype-machine.

  32. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

Free has been released by the Colts. Dude can’t even find a third string job.

  33. salish_seamonster Says:

    tmax, LMB-

I can’t agree that it’s good business to go after 2 first tier O lineman when there are other needs. I mean, I would welcome it if it happened, but I just don’t think that’s their M.O. It would surprise the hell out of me.

  34. biff barker Says:

Tmax “Take WangMaster OneLove aka Mike Johnson with you…”

That’s pretty damn funny right there.

  35. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    salish_seamonster

Yo man – check this out. This is the typical Bullsh!t we discuss around this time of year. According to Joe – Its the most active time on this site#hitbait

Everyone’s engaged, Its the begining of new calender years – So there’s hope

    Anything can happen

  36. biff barker Says:

I wouldn’t be opposed to drafting an OL at all. BPA. There should be some pretty damn good value in later rounds.

We’ve got the scratch to sign FA’s as needed.

  37. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    salish_seamonster

I hear U. I know we have other needs. But there’s a good chance – we might have

Offense Line, Wide Receiver, and Defensive back in free agency. Then hit the defense hard in the draft. This Sh!t’s fluent man. Gotta be able to stick & move.
Alot of money is being thrown at anyone with a pass rush.

  38. tmaxcon Says:

    salish_seamonster

there are many needs on this team, I do agree but if you can protect winston for the next 5 years with smith, marpet, boone and swartz you have to make that move.. Smith and Marpet are on the cheap for 4 years which buys time. I understand your point that being said franchise qb are once in a generation on a team and they must be protected. The defense has needs but I for one believe they are fewer than some would like to think. Lovie and his staff were horrible bordering on criminal fraud… I am all for building int he draft but you have to get talent when you can get it. Bucs have been NO where near the salary cap for years and have actually carried over significant money every year for the last 5 minus lovie’s 32 million dead money adventure…

  39. Jeagan1999 Says:

Bucs SB with Jameis….Ill admit to being a bit of an Ohio State homer, but Braxton is an amazing slot receiver. Good hands, great body control and very nifty in the open field. He will be gone somewhere in round 2. He’d be an awesome addition to Evans and V-Jax! He’d be another great weapon for Jameis!

  40. pick6 Says:

anytime a young (27ish or under), highly drafted player from a team with tons of cap room becomes available, i have to wonder about the player. i don’t know how the Browns’ RT depth chart looks these days, but they hardly seem like a team that would let a quality RT walk, especially with Hue Jackson coming in

  41. GhostofSchiano Says:

What are you guys trying to do? Become the Dick vermeil rams 2? The greatest show on natural grass? WE NEED A DEFENSE. The Broncos just showed us that, as did our very own and honored 2002 Bucs and 2000 Ravens. We need defense!!!!!!!

  42. Lord Says:

Dotson could at least fetch a 6th he’s still a valuable starting RT on a cheap salary with 2-3 years left. At the time of our trade Mankins play was on par with Dotson when we traded a 4th for him. He wasn’t an elite guard at that point just solid like Dotson.

Probably better off keeping him I just love the idea of 6-7 young lineman

  43. finishers Says:

we’re going to draft all D!!!!

  44. Destinjohnny Says:

We will have a chance at a franchise left tackle in this draft…
if we got one then moved the Donavan to right tackle we would be formidable yes formidable…… I said it.
The Glazer boys won’t do it but we need to get spend the $$ for a DE then let the draft come to us the rest of the way.
Two free agents isn’t asking a lot for as much money as we have to spend.

  45. Stanglassman Says:

Bucs kicking the tires on G Sweezy, Chandler and RB Ivory.

  46. finishers Says:

I would like Malik Jackson, Olivier Vernon and throw in M.jones or T.Benjamin plus Martin that’s my list.Go Bucs!!!!

  47. Rrsrq Says:

    I’m with ^^^ finishers

  48. The Real Drew Says:

This would totally rule out Ronnie Stanley in the draft as “best player available” pick at 9. It’s not like DE where we could stand to sign 2 and draft 1 or 2.

  49. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I wonder if they figure to put Evan Smith in at Left Guard. He is better at guard than at center.

  50. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Remember, there was talk of moving him to guard at the start of last year.

Smith comes with a low price…they might just put him at LG for a year to reduce the number of spots to fill.

  51. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    But I prefer Incognito

  52. Kevin Says:

I woukd really like to see Evan Smith get cut if he shows up looking like he sat on a coach with a built in toilet seat and fridge since cleaning out his locker

  53. Kevin Says:

I wish they would have took incognitop last season…

  54. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Schwartz has been on my Free Agency wishlist…so I hope we get him.

  55. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @Kevin

I don’t personally like Evan Smith either…but…he is better suited to play guard than center, and putting him in Mankins’ spot could buy the team a year to fill it in a more permanent way.

At least, that’s what I suspect their mindset might be.

Cutting him would be a bad idea. Even if we get Incognito. Evan Smith can be depth for guard AND center…that kind of depth is good the have.

  56. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Sign this guy ASAP if possible. 26 year old stud Tackles don’t come around too often. Then sign a LG, maybe Alex Boone or Incog. And look at Mack if he will sign for around 8 million instead of 10-12. Doubtful but you never know. The number one priority is to protect Jameis. That starts at the line.

Worry about both lines, a WR, CB, and Safety. Personally I would sign 2 Cleveland Browns, but it wouldn’t be Mack and Schwartz. It would be Schwartz and Tashaun Gipson. Gip can dominate if healthy. Which he should be by now. He is an all pro free safety. We could play McDougle in the box and let Gipson run wild over the top.

Can’t wait…its almost free agent time. Close to $60 million to spend, wisely, I hope. Lets go Licht.

  57. godzilla13 Says:

I agree that players of this caliber and age only come around so often and they are the ones in FA that you sign them to a long term deal. Mitchell Schwartz (6-5 320) is the right choice as the dinner bell rings. By releasing Gosder Cherilus it would pay a quarter of his salary. Schwartz has also not missed a single one of the Browns’ 4,427 offensive snaps since he was drafted. It will cost all of $12,000,000 a year to sign him but if you want the best you have to pay for the best. Who is next on the menu.

  58. salish_seamonster Says:

^^ 12 million? No thanks. That’s All Pro salary for a RT. If that is what his market is, then hell no. I like this idea if it’s in the 8 million range.

  59. godzilla13 Says:

I hear the Bucs are I interested in Seattle’s J.R. Sweezy. He was a college defensive tackle conversion who is gaining attention, and price, in this free-agent market. There are 10 teams showing interest. It is being reported that a $15.75 million, three-year contract is going to be signed by guard Richie Incognito with Buffalo. Sweezy is a nasty, at-times dominant run blocker who remains inconsistent in pass protection but has upside. Seattle has invested too much in Sweezy to let him leave without a big fight. He would fit right in with Ali Marpet, who could move to Center and bring some attitude with him to or line. If Licht can pull off a RT Mitchell Schwartz and G J.R. Sweezy signing, our OL would have a huge upgrade. Here is what we could see –

    Donovan Smith-Kevin Pamphile-Ali Marpet-J.R. Sweezy-Mitchell Schwartz
