Bobby Rainey Hits Free Agent Market

March 9th, 2016

bobby rainey 1112The new league year is upon us, and Bobby Rainey has not earned a return voyage with the Buccaneers in 2016.

Rainey has hit the free agent market.

Back in 2013, Rainey was pulled off the street by former Bucs rockstar general manager Mark Dominik when Doug Martin was injured. Rainey turns 29 in October and certainly has low mileage on his legs. He’s a just-ok returner and a very good No. 3 or No. 4 running back.

Joe’s not sure what the Bucs have in mind at returner. Adam Humphries is an option, but it doesn’t feel like a quality option.

Rainey is replaceable, but him moving on definitely represents a hit to what was a super deep stable of running backs.

Perhaps this is a bit of a nod to running back Mike James, who Joe thinks is a talent poised to break out like he did in 2013.

    Thank God

Rainey is a luxury…..we have Martin, Sims & James…..like him but he wasn’t great as KR/PR…..we can do better.

I’d really like to see us pick up a versatile FB

    @Tampabaybucfan

why are you so fasinated with the FB??? How about Stocker as your versatile FB!!! He is TE/FB, now that is versatile!!!

  4. Trubucfan22 Says:

He sucked. We can certainly find any bum off the street to do anything he could do and better. He can’t even consistently catch a punt. He should have been cut during last season after all the muffed punts.

    @ Realist

I simply think a blocking/running/pass-catching FB adds much more to the offense…..when Stocker is in….it’s almost exclusively for blocking.

My thought is that the FB position is the 4th RB position & you use an additional WR for the KR/PR……perhaps Bell or a TBA/FA

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

A FB like Earnest Graham….for example.

  7. ColoradoBuc Says:

Hey guys, we still have approximately $48.0 million, less Keith Tandy’s salary for net year (wasn’t publicized). Let’s get cracking!

  8. unbelievable Says:

    Agreed TBbf.

Allows you a lot of versatility out of run formations. Not sure it’s high on Lichts priority list though.

  9. Trubucfan22 Says:

Mark Barron re signed with the rams on a 5 yr 45 mil contract.

  10. Lord Says:

Vernon signing with Giants. Time for the end of the world party to kick off

  11. canadian bucsfan Says:

Vernon is gone to the giants for 5 years 85 million

  12. CC Says:

So far the Bucs have less players than when they finished the season and have added nothing to the roster from last year.

  13. unbelievable Says:

    That’s not surprising.

Free agency last a long time and most new coaching staffs will get rid of players first.

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ CC

    Patience…..we will improve…

  15. Lord Says:

17 mill per year for Vernon lol my god maybe GMs really have lost their minds over DEs this year

  16. canadian bucsfan Says:

    @lord
I agree. I wanted Vernon but not at that price

  17. Tom Edrington Says:

No Bobby Rainey? Oh hell, cancel next season…..

  18. Big Marlon B Says:

Mike James needs some burn. after he was drafted, i watched some videos and interviews and came away very impressed with his team first atitude. he’s a guy who will do anything he has to do to contribute, you have to find a role for a guy like that on your team. even if he gets 5 touches a game and carves out a role on special teams, he needs to be on the final 53.

  19. James Walker Says:

Rainey dropped a few, but he is still worth it if he signs on the cheap. Mike James needs to be the #3 RB.

  20. Espo Says:

I think he fumbled his way out of consideration for our roster. He made some good plays for us as well, which made me a fan of his, but I’m ok seeing him go. He’s done well for himself without being drafted. I hope he remains employed elsewhere.

I will miss Rainey, he showed he was one of the better RB in the league in 2013. But when u can’t hang on to the ball it really doesn’t mean how good you are. Fumbling is most likely what cost him his job. Won’t miss him as a punt returner tho. We can Def do better there. I’m excited to see what Bell can do in the return game. He is th fastest guy we have on offense. Looks lie he will be our only deep threat too. Unless we draft or sign another speedster.
