“A Lot Of Defenses That Kind Of Confuse Offenses”

March 26th, 2016
"Did you hear the one about opposing quarterbacks completing 70% against the Bucs?"

“Did you hear the one about opposing quarterbacks completing 70% against the Bucs?”

We learned last week that Dirk Koetter is proving more of an anti-Lovie than previously known.

So it’s not surprising he’s teamed up with the ultimate anti-Lovie defensive coordinator, Mike Smith.

Smith believes in making life mentally challenging for quarterbacks facing the Bucs’ defense — disguising, surprising, adjusting and attacking.

Lovie Smith? Well, he was about sticking to his nearly 20-year-old, well-known playbook, whether he had the personnel to execute it or not.

Lavonte David recently spent a few minutes with Casey Phillips of Buccaneers.com and shared some early impressions of Mike Smith. David noted Mike Smith has “a lot of defenses that kind of confuse offenses.”

What a concept! Bucs fans should be smiling this morning.

Joe is willing to bet second-rate quarterbacks like Case Keenum, Derek Anderson, Brian Hoyer, Kirk Cousins, Austin Davis, Ryan Mallett, Matt Hasselbeck and Marcus Mariota won’t light up the Bucs’ defense like a Christmas tree this year, as they did over the past two seasons.

20 year old system. Forced on players that never wanted to play in it. Well said, Joe . Confuse defenses? What a novel concept . There will be none of that in Illinois, per Lovie’s “my way only” policy.

Um, what’s all this anti-Lovie talk? He is a great guy and a “defensive guru” I am told. According to the afternoon local sports talk show host prior to Lovie’s most recent unemployment anyone that wanted lovable LovieDovie fired after two fantastic Lovie-style seasons is motivated by racism.
I wonder if wanting to craft a defense that in practice can stop opposing NFL offenses in the spirit of being anti-Lovie is also considered racism?

In that interview one of the first verbs used was “attacking”. What a refreshing sound.

  4. Patrick in VA Says:

It’s upsetting that we’ve amassed so many shameful lists as we have over the last few years. the list of awful quarterbacks that dissect our defenses. The list of woeful edge rushers. The list of personnel blunders. The list of hapless coaches that are thoroughly out-coached regularly. I feel good about the way forward and I think we’ve nailed it with the front office and coaching moves we’ve made, which will bring about positive results from the team, but sweet Jesus has this team been a train wreck or what?

    Deceptive statement.

He feels differently about joint practices…that is not “anti-Lovie”. It’s simply a difference of opinion.

I am happy about the direction of the team thus far. Hopefully the plan will be a success on the Sundays and we will get back to being a contender again. Playoffs after a decade drought would be surreal.

  7. DB55 Says:

I want to spend a few minutes with Casey Phillips.

  8. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

For example…I don’t drink beer. Joe does. That doesn’t mean I am “anti-Joe”.

    Shakes head.

  9. DallasBuc Says:

Not drinking beer does kinda make you anti-Joe.
    Anti-American too!!

  10. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @DallasBuc

I have Dutch roots too…so it makes me anti-Dutch too!

  11. rayjay1122 Says:

There are 10 types of people, those who like beer and those who like binary. I choose BEER!!!

  12. DallasBuc Says:

    Nah, you just hate America

  13. BigHogHaynes Says:

Forced on players that never wanted to play in it………..I hope they are able to pick up this new multifaceted 3-4 morphing into 4-3 Defence on board now! I don’t see it getting much better in 2016

  14. Defense Rules Says:

Joe, it’s taken me a couple of years but I finally figured out why I enjoy the JBF website. Only sports site I know of that can lead with an article on Lavonte David ‘spending a few minutes with Casey Phillips’ talking about defense and within 7 comments … Wham, folks have transitioned to beer, the Dutch, and more beer. And all this with just the limited Saturday morning crowd. Never quite know where the Friday night crowd will end up.

  15. NashvilleBuc Says:

    @bonzai
I don’t think Joe is saying Koetter is anti-Lovie (meaning he is against or opposed to Lovie.) I think he’s saying koetter is THE anti-Lovie (in the same sense that matter and anti-matter are defined or maybe like Superman and Bizarro)

Koetter is, in some ways, behaving the opposite of Lovie. (Not behaving in ways that mean he didn’t like or respect Lovie.)

  16. TB4EVA Says:

That list of quarterbacks makes me sick man. That alone is grounds for firing a defensive coach.

Haven’t you seen beerfest? He goes home wasted thinking its that extremely hot chick but its really that extremely fat chick. BEER’S THE BEST!!

  18. tmaxcon Says:

I’m just excited a coach will finally take advantage of players skill set versus turning former pro bowl players into bench warmers

  19. MadMax Says:

@Defense Rules, you nailed it lol. Friday night? Well I was delving deep into the DE prospects while having some cold ones. I know the hatred around here for DE’s from Clemson, But Im telling you, Shaq Lawson is going to be a helluva gamer. Im not crazy about him at #9 but he will go in the teens.

Anyways, back to beer. Anyone tried those “best damn root beers or cherry colas”? Man those things will sneak up on you. Dont drink too many, 3 or 4 then go to bed.

Oh Koetter and Mike Smith was mentioned here….ya, have some beers and enjoy what you’re about to see 🙂 much needed transformation.

  20. Buccfan37 Says:

Some things fat are beautiful, like a big fat Bucs winning streak.

  21. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @DallasBuc

No…just Cowboy fans who troll other teams websites pretending to be a fan.

  22. LJ'sDaddy Says:

    Thanks Nashville. ..someone to explain.

  23. canadian bucsfan Says:

Come on now. We all know drinking beer is Canada’s national past time

  24. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Bonzai now that was funny☺. I’ve wondered about that guy since I discovered this site.

  25. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

And even funnier thing is we beat them in a close game this past season. We gone go jerryworld and beat the hell out they a$$ next season. You know with tony romeo on the field this time. So no-one can make any excuses. CAPITOL MUTA@$!# the cowboys!!!

  26. gotbbucs Says:

I think I’m most excited to possibly draft the best talent on the board, regardless of what scheme somebody wants to pigeon hole them into. I really hope this isn’t all just smoke and we sit there in a straight 4 man front all game again.
I’m cautiously optomistic for this team to supposedly finally stick there nose into the modern era of NFL football. Where good QBs with multiple weapons can drop 40 points a week and multi scheme defenses can demoralize you.

  27. Buc1987 Says:

    I hate Lovie Smith.
