Report: Three Assistant Coaches Signed

January 15th, 2016
Koetter 2

New staff grows

Nothing is official, but Alex Marvez of FOX Sports and SiriusXM NFL Radio is Twittering the names of three new Bucs assistant coaches hired by the Dirk Koetter regime.

Per Marvez, Mark Duffner will be the new linebackers coach under defensive coordinator Mike Smith, and Jon Hayes will coach defensive line. Hayes had the same role with the Bengals, and Duffner served the Dolphins in the same capacity.

Nate Kaczor will take over special teams. He had the same job in Tennessee.

Interesting that Michael “Ghost” Johnson’s D-line coach has moved on from Cincinnati and lands in Tampa.

This guy sucks, this team sucks and all Bucs fans on here are idiots!!!!

S.O.B. Mark Duffner…what the hell has he ever done?

My name is “The Kevin” and I live in a VAN…DOWN by the river.

    You idiots!

  3. DB55 Says:

Wake me up when we trade gmc.

  4. Buc1987 Says:

    DB…Wooooooooooh (Ric Flair)

Move up to the top 3 and take Bosa. Like hitting a reset button.

  5. BuccaneEric75 Says:

    87, LOL!

  6. Jim Says:

    Bosa gonna be a bust

  7. DB55 Says:

Mike Smith insist on playing tough. He don’t fall for no bananas in his tailpipe. It’s a new day (again) in tampabay.

  8. DB55 Says:

    87

The crystal ball is very murky keeps telling me “ask again later”

  9. BuccaneEric75 Says:

55, haven’t seen you in here for a while!

  10. Bobby Says:

Loved Koetter’s press conference. The last question where he was asked what kind of coach he would be and he answered “I’m a football coach” and went on to explain how he always wanted to be his father who coached multiple sports and did pretty much everything from reading every football book ever written to writing plays out on napkins, etc. I think football is in this guys blood and I think he’s passionate about winning. I feel good about the hire and I believe Licht will get him the players to plug in. Mike Smith is an awesome hire and I look for next year to be a huge step forward.

  11. Waterboy Says:

    Hope Terry Robiskie is next.

  12. K2 Says:

Those are all great coaches and are big up-grades. Just look at his average D-line sacks…big improvement on the way.

  13. DB55 Says:

    75

    Missed you too baby.

  14. Wesley Says:

Really should have retained Nickerson he’s done a fantastic job as linebackers coach.

  15. Tbbucs3 Says:

Love the Mike Smith hire at DC and he’s the only one in the building with NFL head coaching experience so will be a great assistant to Dirk as he builds his head coaching reputation. Our new d line coach is experienced and got production out of Michael Johnson. Don’t know about the special teams guy cause the Titans are usually not very good at that.

  16. Tbbucs3 Says:

Then again the Titans are not good at anything.

  17. Pickgrin Says:

Hate to see Hardy go – thought he did a great job with Kwon last year.

Or maybe Kwon is just that good no matter who his coach is…

  18. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I hate to see Hardy go as well. I wonder how well he fit into Lovie’s style anyway. Hardy always played on the ragged edge…nothing like Lovie’s defense last year.

  19. BucFan20 Says:

No more Back to the Future. He wants his own people. It’s over. Time to build a defense that works.

  20. Dave Says:

    Don’t need Bosa.
Lawson looks to be a beast. Same with the OK St kid, Ogbah.
Plenty of DEs in first round.
Need a good CB in round 2 or 3 and a WR

  21. Rrsrq Says:

No Cullen, no Hardy, this is a wait and see, jury is out

  22. Chromolly Says:

I expect GMC and 3/4’s of the line canned and maybe GMC for a 3rd,maybe a second if we find a sucker…Mark dumbanick set this franchise back 7 years.Thank God licht is here…Team is heading up….Sorry ass people like lovie dovie..Screw hardy and every single coach not named Koetter that lovie dovie softy brought here. ..Tired of these soft ass people like GMC in Tampa..

    TRADE GMC!!!!

  23. SuperSam Says:

    Loving this new coaching staff

  24. ChessMaster Says:

    It’s Jay Hayes…not Jon!

  25. ChessMaster Says:

Jon Hayes is the TE coach for the Bengles.

  26. meat Says:

Loved Koetters presser too. He is so much like Arians its crazy. Love him. Finally excited as a Bucs fan even if our bumbling owner is embarrasing. Totally a dude who inherited his dads money….. did you see him at the podium? Joel or Bryan or whomever, he was a bafoon. As long as he cuts big checks for whomever Lict says, I feel like I can finally support my team again! A great offensive minded head coach, a fiery d coordinator- THANK GODDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

  27. Trubucfan22 Says:

Duffner sounds like a good hire. He has been working with linebackers for a long time. Worked with Mike Smith in Jacksonville. And was a college HC. He’s got a good looking resume. Would be surprised to see him be a DC in the near future.

The other 2 dont have wiki pages, so i got nothing on them.

  28. tdtb2015 Says:

The Bengals have posted 40+ sacks in all but one of the past five seasons. Hayes seems like a good pick!

  29. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I remember once a long time ago one of my bosses asked me who I had in mind to take my place? Whoa I said am I getting a pink slip here. No he said I’m just letting you know that any good manager who is loyal to his organization always realizes one of his most important objectives is to identify his successor for the good of the organization/team.

I think Licht and Koetter get this. Smith is here to repair his rep and get back to another HC. I love that motivation. I suspect that some of these hires have been told when and if Mike goes you’ll be next in line.

  30. tdtb2015 Says:

  31. Howard Cosell Says:

They’re moving fast this time compared to some of the other coaching changes. That’s good. The sooner they can get to work.

The Schiano hire took until Jan 29th.

  32. Eric Says:

    @1987

“A van down by the river”

Hilarious brother. I love that skit. Nice work.

  33. Eric Says:

This time lets not panic like there is a pending nuclear invasion because Mike Smith might leave.

  34. DoNUTS Says:

Nice nugget from Ira Kaufman today

In the lone season Koetter and Smith worked together as coordinators in Jacksonville, the 2007 Jaguars went 11-5 and won a playoff game.

  35. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Cleaning house….and fast….some of this planning had to be going on days ago…..OK by me…..all new defense….will be interested in DB coaches…..perhaps they are on playoff teams now.

  36. THETRUTH Says:

Is hardy Nickerson still on staff????

  37. Trubucfan22 Says:

Leslie frazier is the ravens new secondary coach.

    Those poor stupid fools.

  38. Howard Cosell Says:

Lol, Leslie Frazier is like Lovie lite.
Ideally I would have liked Jim Schwartz and to keep Cullen and Nickerson, but hey, Howard is still optimistic.

  39. kak Says:

Am i seeing some of you suggest we trade GMC????? you crazy or something he’s our strongest defensive player for the past 5 years + he’s not a trouble maker and will never be. He’s as solid as you can get. And yes I know we have lavonte too but he can’t do it alone we need to build our defense around these two pieces.

  40. Trubucfan22 Says:

Sensible fans are not. I honestly can’t wait to see what a new defense (coaches, players, and scheme) can do to help GMC get even better. I don’t think gmc was challenged enough by Lovie and Leslie. We should expect the world from gmc, and he should be able to deliver. He is that good. Coaches just need to figure out how to unleash him.

  41. godzilla13 Says:

I am excited Mike Smith is DC and that he has cleaned house all the way on defense. He will bring the true “smash mouth” football to Tampa. No more Tampa2. No more confusion in the secondary. Lets go get a CB in the first round and go get Adam “packman” Jones in FA and play some “bump and run”. Or should we say “punch and run”? I hope Koetter does the same on offense. Clean house and start fresh.

  42. Nate123 Says:

This team is becoming terrible blazers have made the wrong move on defense on offense it’s okay…

  43. Tbbucs3 Says:

We have something good going with the our interior offense, 2 promising rookie OL, depth at RT, Joe Hawley is only 27 and of course Doug and Jameis. But lack of WR depth has made me actually miss Louis Murphy. Humpries is a number 5 and Dye went to a d2 school because that’s what he is.
    2016 WR depth Chart.
    1- Mike Evans
    2- V jax
3- Free agent- Travis Benjamin, Anquan Bolden, Percy Harvin (Boom or bust)
    4- Louis Murphy
    5- Humpries
    6- Bell

  44. lurker Says:

if you ever had any credibility, it is gone now. really, the defense was fine, then? cullen and nickerson were better coaches? lovie was a better dc?

  45. White Tiger Says:

As a dyed-in-the-wool Buckeye, I’d love to land Bosa, but – and this takes a lot for me to say – I could just has happily see us land Mario Williams in free agency.

Just hope Mike Smith keeps the wraps on the 3-4.

If we’re going to be Atlanta Falcons 2.0 – lets not channel the atrocious Atlanta Falcons who ran that “hybrid” 3-4…and gave up 167 yards to Bobby Rainey…

I’m intrigued, but my expectations are low – we’ll see what we see.

  46. unbelievable Says:

Lol at the people saying clean house on offense and defense. Also the same people who want 9+ wins and the playoffs or will be ready to change coaching staffs again.

I believe Mike smith will mostly run a 4-3. And you’ll still see cover-2 / Tampa-2 in certain situations. It’ll be nice to finally see the corners finally pressing guys at the line!

  47. lurker Says:

What he coulda done with revis…

  48. RealBucFan Says:

We will be fine at cb. Banks and Verner are true press man corners, so is Sterling Moore. Could use compitition at the posistion. Ramsay, if possible. If not, best teams draft best available, not need. No problem with trading down if Paxton Lynch is still on the board. I bet Houston would call.

  49. Pancake Block Says:

Janoris Jenkins and Mario Williams in free agency would pretty much make the draft luxury picks……b.p.a….imagine The gems the gm can find without having to pick for need?

  50. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I said it weeks ago. Outside of Winston, GMC is our best player…and highly considered to be the best 4-3 DT in the league. If he were to hit free agency, he would get a massive deal.

I think it was Jimmy Johnson who, when he was hired with the Cowboys, determined the best player on the team and traded him for multiple high picks. Those new picks fixed the team and they became the top team. I think on of them was Emmott Smith.

I love having GMC here. I think he is the top leader on defense and is a workhorse. But…if Licht is as good at drafting as you people think…acquiring 2 firsts and 2 2nds would instantly replace him and fix this team.

My question is this…does ANYONE believe a GM who has shown little ability in trade negotiations could pull it off…and keepthings quiet until the deal is done?

  51. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I would like to see us take our Glennon pick, or 5th and both 6 round picks to trade up for better players…..I’d like to see us grab at least 3 starters in the draft…..DE, CB, S…(order would depend on players available)

Use FA to find another DE & WR

    We can get this done!!!

  52. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I also think assuming Mario Williams will actually hit the market AND that Licht can seal the deal is a mistake. After year 1 with Movie, he is gun shy on free agency.

  53. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Leslie Frazier hired as secondary coach of Ravens. He’d make a better ball guy.

  54. Buc1987 Says:

Bonzai….Hershal Walker trade built the Cowboys.

Got a gaggle of picks for him… They turned them into pretty much a dynasty.

  55. unbelievable Says:

The amount of picks jimmy Johnson got for walker and some other guys he traded was unprecedented. There won’t ever be a trade / cleaning of house with that much immediate impact ever again.

  56. Bobby Says:

If I’m a GM I’m salivating at the thought of a DT who can get double digit sacks and pressure the QB, fill run gaps and just basically wreak havoc. I AM NOT GOING TO TRADE THIS GUY IF I HAVE HIM ON MY TEAM!!

  57. StPeteBucsFan Says:

GMC is good to borderline great. He has a few years left to move that needle.

Hayes worked with the one DT I consider as good…maybe better than GMC…Geno Atkins. Think Hayes and GMC will be talking about any of Geno’s tricks…think Hayes will be able to motivate GMC with Geno on his resume.

It’s been said that good players always play well but that great players make those around them play better. If there is one knock on GMC I can accept it’s that last part. GMC up till now has simply not made those who play around him much better.

But I think that can work both ways…GMC would have clearly benefitted from another good player who makes those around him play better..thought it might be LVD but he’s a quiet guy…still could be Kwon but with Smith and Hayes coaching them perhaps the entire team will improve enough and we’ll actually get to see GMC at his VERY BEST. Imagine that!!! He’s play very well for us but what if he used that amazing talent combined with some help on the D to take it up a notch. Wooooieee.
