“A Very Solid Hire”

Bullish on Dirk Koetter.

Former Super Bowl-winning coach and NFL talking head Brian Billick took to his NFL Network forum last night to sound off on the Bucs’ hiring.

In short, Billick believes Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht hit the nail on the head.

“Yeah, if you have not heard this before then this is breaking news: This is a quarterback-driven league. You are seeing the Giants want continuity for Eli Manning with Ben McAdoo. In Miami, they want help with Ryan Tannehill, they go get the quarterback whisper in Adam Gase,” Billick said. “Obviously with the success Dirk Koetter had with Jameis Winston, they wanted to sustain that.

“Now Dirk Koetter is a good coach and he has a lot more experience, certainly, than those other young quote/unquote quarterback gurus. This is a guy who is a former head coach. He has been in this league.

“This is a good choice for Tampa Bay because it combines a guy who has brought Jameis Winston into the league so to speak and developing him and there will be continuity there but they also get a coach who has a great deal of experience.

“This looks to be a very solid hire by Tampa Bay.”

Yes, Joe is on board with Koetter.

Now go get Jim Schwartz.

Can’t argue any of the points Billick makes. It’s too soon to be casting a bust of Koetter in Canton, but I’m at least optimistic about what looks to be a solid HC hire for the Bucs. I think we all learned a valuable lesson from Lovie…wait and see how the team plays first before we start celebrating in the off season for a return to NFC South relevance. Give ’em hell Dirk, let’s go Bucs!

Mike Nolan for DC?…worked with Koetter before…

  3. CC Says:

Schwartz would be a great compliment to Koetter, but looks like he wants to stay home and coach in Tenn. Glazers will have to pay the man to change his mind.

    This was a solid hire….

Glazers to Licht….”Jason, we’re going to let you do the coach search and hire….we like Dirk Koetter for the job and we’re sure you agree. Now go find us a coach”

  5. Eric Says:

The guy knows his offense and Jaboo did really well in his system.

Never know how a coordinator does at the top spot, but nothing is ever certain.

Let’s hope we finally, finally, finally catch a break and this works!

  6. BucTrooper Says:

For all the reasons BRIAN BILLICK states, that’s exactly why I thought Koetter was selected.

I think Winston is the Glazers favorite player of all time (since buying the team anyway). This hire was more for his development more than anything.

I don’t view the Lovie firing as the Bucs canning their head coach; I look at it as the Bics fired their defensive coordinator.

We really need to look outside the box with defensive coordinator. I posted earlier that the way they hurt us in the dungy days was hitting our staff . D line coach Rod Marrinela ! Lb coach Lovie Smith asst lb coach Joe Barry, DB coach HERM asst db coach asst db coach Mike Tommlin . Special teams coach Rich Bicsaci . So i would go after Arizona Cardinals db coach Nick Rapone . Watch the Arizona Cardinals dbs . He is innovative and relentless

    Interesting. Good call.

And who worked in Arizona two years ago? 🙂

  9. ChessMaster Says:

GENE CHIZIK for DC! He coached Auburn to a national championship in 2010, and while HC of UCF he studied and sat in meetings with Dungy and Kiffin. He knows the 4-3!

I agree with Billick on this topic. Usually when I see him, I remind myself this is the same guy who released his Super Bowl winning quarterback in favor of some guy named Elvis. So I guess he learned a bit about what continuity should look like had he not made one on the worst (and overlooked) roster moves of all time.

    @1nebuc

Love the out of the box thinking.

Cardinals DBs are always pretty aggressive.

Actually, Rapone is listed as the defensive backs coach and Kevin Ross is listed as the corner backs coach. I’ve seen Ross’s name thrown out as a candidate for our DC before, but one of them should be a decent pickup.

funny to hear outsiders questioning Dirk’s credentials. he has the college HC experience that seemingly spurred half the hires of the last 5 years. He has put in more time as an NFL coordinator than adam gase and maybe even hue jackson. he’s not a guarantee, but there’s not much left for Dirk to do to deepen his qualifications for a shot at a head coaching gig

@BucTrooper: “I don’t view the Lovie firing as the Bucs canning their head coach; I look at it as the Bics fired their defensive coordinator.”

i see it the same way, whatever quiet confidence\leadership Lovie exuded as a head coach, it was too quiet for me to pick up on. I think the Glazers felt like their D Coordinator (Lovie) and their de facto Director of the 53 man roster (also lovie) did a bad enough job to merit dismissal, and that losing the head coach in the process was an acceptable byproduct of that
