Gerald McCoy Talks Injuries

Gerald McCoy was back on the field but largely ineffective with a cast on his left hand.

Look for Gerald McCoy smiling at the Pro Bowl after this season, but it certainly hasn’t been an eat-pineapple-and-hula kind of year for No. 93.

McCoy was subdued in the postgame locker room today, and said his season has been far too “up and down” for his liking.

Asked about how his carved up and casted left hand and other ailments are limiting him, McCoy explained.

“You know, I’ve been limited all year, but I just trying to find a way to get it down, man. I’ve got a cast on my hand, it’s tough,” he said. “I tried to use my left hand more, but [didn’t] use it as much as I would have liked to. I’m still dealing with the shoulder. Injuries are injuries, though, that’s not an excuse.”

Clearly, McCoy’s hand neutered him today against a solid interior offensive line of the Saints. It was his first-game back following some sort of hand surgery 13 days ago.

There was nothing much from him in the pass rush beyond an initial burst off the line of scrimmage. The Bucs almost seemed to take a step back today with McCoy in the game.

During his pregame interview on the Buccaneers Radio Network, Lovie Smith said most players would not have come back so soon from this injury. Perhaps McCoy should have waited another week.

This needs to be a defensive draft. That side of the ball has been neglected for too dang long. But we also need 2 wr and possibly another rb. I apologize for thinking about playoffs, i got a little ahead of myself. We have some work to do.

    Go Draft

Agree with the last 2 posts.

McCoy is soft as a coffee poop. Our defensive line is absolutely soft and did take a step back this week. Who saw a second yr Mack get 5 sacks today? Watch Sunday night football and look how disruptive Watt is on every play. Give me a 1st and 2nd rounder for McCoy – I’d be more than happy to build around ANYONE else.

You are talking about a line backer and a defensive end. Whom are both healthy. Those pass rushers play a very different game than a DT. Which is why DTs dont have very many 10 sack seasons. If mccoy was soft then why has he been fighting through injuries all year? If he was soo soft, why isnt he in the trainers room all week and in his floppy hat on sundays? The guy is fighting to be out there, and doing the best he can under the circumstance. You act like you expect mccoy to have 5 sacks per game… Ifs fine to be dissappointed in the production from mccoy this year, i think everyone especially himself is. But to try and even compare mccoy to watt or mack is just asinine. Mccoy is a freaking DT. Kids these days dont understand football…

  8. GOBUCS Says:

He’s been ineffective all year long. He’s done nothing

They play two different positions, moron.

Gerald McCoy is an excellent football player, period. He’s on of the best football players in the NFL, period. Steve White is absolutely correct when he said last week the haters need to get the hate out of their hearts.

You guys don’t have a problem with McCoy. You have a problem with yourselves.

  10. BucinNC Says:

Can you imagine the heat McCoy would have received had he not played? Sheesh. The guy is a top 3 dt in te league and is almost leading in sacks. He’s our best player. Not his fault. Blamed Gerald and Jameis for taking mark Barron. Blame them for getting rid of zuttah. Blame them for mike “I wish we had Odell” evans. Blame them for our corners blowing. Blame them for dyes dropped pass. They clearly were whistling or blowing bubbles or doing something that caused Barth to miss that kick

the dline did take a step back in this game…I applaud him for trying to battle thru injuries and taking the field with his teammates but it was obvious that he was hurting his team by playing with one hand and one shoulder…even the dline coach ripped into gmc for his play…its one thing to play hurt but its another thing to play injured…I say shut him down and let him heal..no need for him to finish the season, have surgery on his shoulder, and then have to rehab for 4-6months putting his training camp return in jeopardy… GO BUCS!!!

I do think we should trade him…not because I don’t like him or thinks he’s soft but because I see him as a major asset that can be used to get more assets this coming draft…we need outside pass rush…I think spence, ghloston, mcdaniels and mcdonalds can stop the run and take care of the qb if the outside pass rush forces the qb to step up in the pocket…GO BUCS!!!
