“Comical” Chemistry Helping Bucs

Comedy is key on the Bucs’ O-line

Joe has been busy compiling clues that explain the renaissance of the Buccaneers’ offensive line.

One popped up the other night when rookie left tackle Donovan Smith was chatting on the Buccaneers Radio Network.

Smith talked about the extreme chemistry that has evolved within the entire O-line. He explained that it’s all about the humor and the looseness among the unit, including offensive line coach George Warhop fostering everyone having a good time — all while busting ass on the field and holding the unit to high standards in the film room.

Smith chastised host T.J. Rives for implying that Gosder Cherilus and Demar Doston are quiet guys. Smith said that’s just their public persona and they’re big parts of the fun and frolicking, too.

As a rookie, Smith said he did his best to shut up and be quiet for months upon his arrival to Tampa Bay. But that’s all changed now, he said.

“Comical” was the word used multiple times by Smith to explain the work day of the O-line. Smith said having fun coming to One Buc Palace daily is a blessing not lost on him, despite being a rookie.

I guess that’s the “gelling” that we kept hearing about last year that was supposed to start happening. Fortunately, we’ve got people on the line this year that are actually interested in working when they come to work and not just collecting a paycheck. Thanks for nothing Collins and Cousins.

  2. John McKillop Says:

I tell my employees to be loose and have fun as long as the work is being done and being done well. In my experience as a leader and boss this atmosphere has always been a benefit production wise. When you give people a place that they actually want to be it makes for a more productive workday. Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

I think we all hoped this would happen with the OL. But, not everyone believed it actually would, or this quickly.

I thought Warhop was part of the problem. I will be glad to say I was wrong. There’s still work to do, but, I’m loving the progress thus far.

  4. Mike Johnson Says:

If one enjoys coming to work then work is less mundane Our Bucs sidelines now are so animated than in some previous years. Jameis walks up and down encouraging both Offense and Defense. They seem fired up now. Unfortunately for a lot of us, we have jobs where our cast act like, The living Dead with no emotions anywhere. Its refreshing to see our Bucs believing in themselves again.

“comedy of errors” comes to mind

Wouldn’t it have been better to use D. Smith’s picture, instead of Marpet’s, when using quotes from D. Smith?

@Love and Warrick Dunn … “I thought Warhop was part of the problem. I will be glad to say I was wrong.”

Great point and I agree with you 100%. After last year’s dismal OLine showing, I was convinced the Warhop was a terrible OLine coach. Turns out he just had terrible talent to work with. Who’d a thunk it?

  8. Buc since '74 Says:

I would also like to raise my hand as a fan that thought Warhop had to go. I was wrong. Just had to run the clown posse out of town and replace with men.

  9. Clodhopper Says:

Comical? They have that pic of Marpet hanging up in the locker room Joe loves to use that looks like his “manhood” is trying to get out!!

  10. Buc1987 Says:

Clodhopper…every time I saw that pic it reminded me of this dude that was a regular at this restaurant I worked at back in the 90’s. He was in his late 60’s early 70’s and he sat in this booth right up at the front of the restaurant. I came out of the kitchen and went to say hi to him when I noticed one of his balls was hanging out of his shorts in plain sight. It took everything I had to make it back to the kitchen where I just bursted into laughter. I told the hostess and all the waitresses. So every time anyone walked passed him you couldn’t miss it. It was just there and in the lobby at that.

The guy used to hang out for hours. This time he literally hung out for hours…. with one of his balls out of his shorts.

Marpet and Dotson should grow beards…It would be a line of furry beasts…great image!

What was missing last year has all come together this year. First there was no OC, then a QB with a slow release time and a couple of bad apples mixed in. Logan Mankins was then thrown into the mix and really was not the leader he is this year. The group seemed confused with stunts and blocking assignments as a whole. Lets not forget the OL was the goat just two weeks ago in Indy. The return of Marpet brought the group back to where they were before the Colts game. The OL is critical to the success of this offense and they are so important in the next four games. When the line run blocks and protects, everything else follows.

I’m surprised some debbie downer isn’t up here crying about they should be serious not having fun and that the head coach has lost the team
