Tough Bucs

November 27th, 2015
Tough.

Tough.

Most defensive coaches that become head coaches want to build and mold teams in their own image. That’s a tough image.

And Lovie Smith, a former defensive guy himself, thinks the Bucs may just be becoming a tough team.

And what is a tough team? A smashmouth team on offense that strips the ball on defense often.

“To be a tough football team you need to be able to run the football,” Lovie said earlier this week. “Run it when they know you are going to run it. We’ve been able to do that which is a good thing.

“On the other side of the ball defensively, it’s just not a good defensive effort unless we can take the ball away. It’s about scoring or getting the ball back for the offense. We are getting better with those. We are not the best in the league at either one of those, but I would still say it’s trending in that direction.”

As long as the Bucs can continue to run the ball effectively, Joe will be fine with that. The run game opens up the pass game for America’s Quarterback, Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston.

The defense will come along, so long as the Bucs can control the ball and, more important, score touchdowns.

After all, this notion pushed by Eagles chieftain Chip Kelly that the number of offensive plays is more important than time of possession really is looking rather silly about now, isn’t it?

So with Lovie it was patience, patience even after 2-14, horrible free agents and even worse in game planning, scheming and management. Chip Kelly goes 10-6 in back to back years, has a bad year now he’s a dummy? Get outta here with that.

I’m no Philly fan but give respect where it’s due and apply logic to all situations not just our side

  2. Bucco Brice Says:

This is the philosophy that kills me with Lovie. All he talks about is turnovers with the defense. You can’t depend on turnovers every week to win ball games with your defense. What about dominating at the line of scrimmage or forcing 3 and outs? Turnovers are key in ball games but that’s the only focus with Lovie…

  3. The original "Kevin" Says:

He hasnt drafted anyone on defense in two years accept kwon. You cant expect drastic improvement without drafting and we have still seen improvement all around on defense. Once he and jason agree on a couple new shiny edge rushers, LOOK OUT!!! They have been playing as good as anyone ever expected them too…actually better. Id expect to see an all defensive draft unless there is someone just too good to pass up

  4. OneLove Says:

Tampa Fony, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this site is now dumber for reading it. I will continue to pray for you and may God have mercy on your soul.

  6. Newbucsfan2 Says:

Three and out is the type of defense that helps wins ballgames. Do that and the offense gets the ball soon enough. Great fundamentals and speed will keep the opponents offense off the field.

  7. Tampa Tony Says:

Onelovie-truth hurts and you receive no points for originality. Loser

  8. Dave Says:

    Tampa fony

Chip Kelly got rid of every player built for his offensive style. He’s a moron.
He brought in Bradford to run his offense. REALLY????
    Players are rebelling

Lovie, meanwhile, has a proven track record where he averaged almost 10 wins a year. Players love and respect the guy and play for him.

The Bucs had crap 2 years ago. They cleaned house of the crap and plugged in holes to see what they had to rebuild.
Why people are kind idiots to that fact is beyond me.

Now they know what they have, drafted a bunch of needs, and will do the same next year. They are set up to be a 10 + win a year for the next several years but morons like you want to complain about Lovie and praise this moron Chip.

Go learn about football and what it takes or go find a soccer website to write on.

  9. Dave Says:

The Bucs were a joke changing coaches and systems every 2 years.
It has finally stopped and they are building a contender.

So damn glad the moronic Lovie haters on here aren’t in charge of anything but their moms basement.

I knew one of the trolls would come out when I read the title and he didn’t disappoint. That’s the problem with a certain segment of the populace that thinks they know more than everyone else, when Joe writes something positive about the epitome of their hatred they only hone into one thing not being able to fully use the organ they were given for deep and analytical thought. You really think that that’s all that Lovie teaches his defense……………turnovers. You and all your Cry Me a River Gang members become what you all call him, incompetent! You can bet both of your flat cheeks Lovie preaches that to them every day duhhhh it’s kinda relevant to all defenses! Turnovers can change the momentum of a game, simply let the air out of the other teams sails.

You know what Chip Kelly is a moron because he got rid of the pieces that would make that gimmick work better. Plus he doesn’t have the right qb for it. Also when your offense puts up 3 and outs inside a minute putting his defense right back on the field he’s tiring out pthem as much as the other teams defense.

  11. Tampa Tony Says:

Dave-aren’t too many basements in Florida…

Loser Lovie 7-19 only 2 wins at home hasn’t drafted any defensive players other than Kwon, but he has had free reign in free agency to bring in his guys and players familiar with his system. But he’s whiffed and those vets we were told that were familiar with him are just as bad as the players that we had?

Again I’m not praising Chip, but any coach that goes 10-6 back to back years in this league has my respect. He still hasn’t made as many personnel mistakes as loser Lovie has though.

  12. Eric Says:

    Re: Tampa Tony……
The main problem with Chip Kelly is that he thought HIS SYSTEM was the superior component to winning in the NFL and that he didn’t need established disgruntled star players like Mccoy, Jackson, and Mathis to win. Because he let his ego and pride get in the way of logical thinking the beagles have suffered because of that. Chip Kelly is a good coach, however he isn’t good enough to will the team to win without talent like he thought he was

  13. Dave Says:

Chip went 10-6 because philly had lots of talent.
    He got rid of it.

Lovie had nothing but a few pieces and had to build from scratch. Last year was stop-gap and much failed, mainly because of McClown.
But to say he whiffed on FA is ridiculous. Look at the depth being built at O Line and DT and now WR and LB.
what they have done is built something to last and be a team that is in the playoff hunt as a division winner for years.

Blatantly obvious. Not sure why people expected a miracle after year one with no QB and no OC.

Try to stop whining about last year and sit back and enjoy the next several years.

  14. Tampa Tony Says:

Dave, as a season ticket holder who has only seen 2 wins in person I will hold 2-14 against this regime until they make me forget it.

Can’t act like it didn’t happen, especially since the fans were told “we can win now”

I love winning more than being right, so I hope Lovie turns it around for sustained winning.

  15. Buccfan37 Says:

All I can do is ride the big wave the Bucs are currently surfing. Three in a row will be glee with building confidence.

  16. godzilla13 Says:

@TampaFullofBalloney Says – The Bucs going 2-14 last year was the best result in this franchises history. If you don’t think it happened for a reason then I have some land in New Mexico I have for sale? I am just at a loss how someone calls himself a Buccaneer fan and after the success and promise this team is showing, calls the Coach a loser?

  17. The original "Kevin" Says:

Go gett em Billy! Nudie magazine day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. StPeteBucsFan Says:

So with Lovie it was patience, patience even after 2-14, horrible free agents and even worse in game planning, scheming and management.

    Tony

You need to get your head out of your…last year. Last year was freaking last year. This year is this year…the SECOND year in a turnaround.

Chip Kelly is a COLLEGE COACH who took a talented team and won 10 games two years in a row…Lovie won 11 games twice and 13 one year in a NINE year run that averaged close to 10 wins a year. Now when Chip Kelly can do that I’ll give him the same props Lovie currently has EARNED!!!

People seem to forget that there is more than talent that goes into the team.
We can all debate talent moves, which players..yadda yadda…yadda.

But the Bucs averaged LESS THAN SIX WINS a year prior to Lovie. They had just three winning seasons since the SB win and two of those were 9-7.
They had watched all the money spent on Man U for a period of about a half dozen years.

This team needed a DRAMATIC OVERHAUL!! I’m not talking talent I’m talking a LOSING CULTURE. Talent is only one part of the equation. Lovie…like Father Dungy is trying to change an entire culture and a loser mentality. A season and a half later he’s done a pretty damn good job.

Finally…the problem with both Lovie and Chip is at the QB positon. Lovie has solved his problem…Chip has not. Chip may go the way of Saban…who also blundered at QB and return to college. In the NFL you have to lose big time…the Bucs..to get a franchise QB…or get LUCKY like Belicheat in the 6th round.

Lovie has a QB…Chip does not. Chip could be coaching in college next year where he can go out and simply sign 3 or 4 great high school QB’s and mold them into his college oriented offense.

    Tampa tony

I understand the season ticket thing. Had mine for years also.
    Last year was rebuilding though.
A normal rebuild is 3-4 years. This is year 2.
Recently there have been teams that go from last to first, but those are anomalies. They’re also not teams that are good in the long run. You need to be billed properly in the bucs are doing that now, finally.
They are set at QB, OL, WR (almost), RB, DT, LB for years. A couple DEs and DBs next year and all they’ll be doing for a decade is plugging a minor hole here and there and adding depth.
This team is in the verge of fighting for the division title for 7+ years starting next year.
So bssically grt over last year man. It’s worth it in the long run.
Look at the Cowboys in late 1980’s and their record prior to building their dynasty.
    Or GB prior to Favre.
Bad records, then built through draft around a franchise QB.
    Enjoy this ride.

Just for the record – We’ve been rebuilding since Chucky was fired. I’m a fan of Lovie and like the direction the bucs are headed. They need to pay Dirk tons of cash and keep him here for a few years.
