Bucs Still On Pace For NFL Penalties Record

Strides were made yesterday, but the Bucs still must clean up their act.

Winning is such a fantastic deodorant.

For example, nobody this morning is thinking about the Bucs’ eight penalties yesterday, some of the stupid variety.

But that was a great day for Tampa Bay, which now has 72 penalties through seven games. At that rate, the Bucs will be sitting with 164 penalties when this season ends.

That total would bust the NFL mark of 158 held by the 1998 Chiefs, whose coach wasn’t their coach the following season.

The teams in second, third and fourth-place on this dubious scale also had new coaches in their respective subsequent seasons.

The Bucs did clean things up a bit in Atlanta. They cut the 16 they registered in Washington in half. It’s progress. But eight is still too many.

    What’s average/acceptable in a game?

Penalties are on the players only. Derrick Brooks said as much last week. Take a look at who leads the team in penalties:

Apart from Ali Marpet who’s a rookie the other guys who are tops on the list are not among our best players especially if you sort it by yards.

With the number of penalties and by giving up 500 yards of offense, the Bucs HAD to be +4 in turnovers to squeak this one out. Any win is a good win, and I’m thrilled. But it’s not a repeatable formula.

The Bills have committed more penalties and the Bills and Saints have more penalty yards than the Bucs. We are bad, but not the worst.

It would *seem* the average across the NFL for this season is 7.38 penalties a game.

If eight penalties a game is too many, then most teams in the NFL have penalty problems. Kudos to Lovie and the coaching staff for cleaning them up, just like they said they would. They’re doing a good job molding a young team into a lasting contender.

Thx Rome – 2 Rook lineman and a QB, I’m ok w that.

  8. James Walker Says:

Looking at the stats the refs are throwing more flags this year. It is all arbitrary.

Completely agreed James Walker. Every game I watch I see yellow flags all over the place. It’s as if bonuses are dependent on the number of flags thrown.

@JWalker – Yes, I was terrified that they were going to call GMC for a low hit on Ryan on the last play. He had him around the ankles. I’ve seen worse called.

Yeah, those penalties look like split second decisions by the refs. You only get so many challenges.

Bad coaching… Too many penalties due to undisciplined play…
