Last night on the Buccaneers Radio Network, Gerald McCoy said there were “heated moments” yesterday in a “chippy, intense” and angry practice.
The Bucs’ Pro Bowl defensive tackle said he stepped and tried to redirect the rage born from a crushing loss in Washington.
“What I told them is about frustration and anger,” McCoy said. “When you get frustrated and angry as an NFL player, you have to realize that around the NFL we’re the best at what we do. So when we see someone angry, we know how to counteract that energy of a person that’s just angry and playing like a wild man. Well, we are the best technicians at this game that we play. When you’re angry, [opponents know how to take advantage.]
“What I told the team today is, ‘It’s great that we were highly intense in practice. I love to see the fire and the anger that we had. However, you don’t want to use it the wrong way. You want to take all that energy, that anger and that fire you have, and channel it right into your technique. Channel it into your game plan. … And then, that’s when you turn into that animal people like to see. Because like a dog in a meat house, you’re all over the place. Any professional at this sport will know how to counter that.'”
McCoy explained that it was his duty to fix the practice approach.
“When I seen how chippy everybody was today, you have to see what’s going on, and as a leader, you have to take control of that and get it fixed,” McCoy said. “So that’s what I did today.”
Joe’s not quite sure to make of all this. It sounds like the Bucs carried their undisciplined play into practice. But it also sounds like the Bucs care deeply and are as devastated as the fan base.

After a lost like on Sunday, the team should be pist!
I have defended this cat way too long, but he needs to step up and shut up. When was the last game changing play he made? He got two sacks on a drive, and the Jags still scored. He has no effect on the game. McCoy his a highly skilled support player masquerading as a team leader.

That’s the problem, Whatever they’ve been doing in practice for the last two years, hasn’t worked!
Every time they say they had a good practice.

How about he shuts up and make a play when we need one! Sunday was when the Bucs needed fire and intensity , not at practice .

McCoy should just say,”Guys stop this intense physical play, this isn’t who we are. We are softer than silk and will help opposing players up then hug them while they are ripping our throat out. Got it?”

Its probably the offense getting frustrated about the defense taking a crap on the field and eating a good effort by the offense. Great team division just what we need! Maybe Koetter will punch Lovie in the face this week.

I can’t believe how often this guy calls himself a leader. Never heard brooks outright say he was a leader, but you can bet he would never let a 24 point collapse happen. McCoy needs to let Jameis take over already

McCoy’s right, but what he said is not what Bucs fans want to hear. Players need to be ‘angry’ and aggressive, but also need to play ‘in control’. If they don’t, they tend to pile up penalties and blow assignments. Gee, what team does that sound like?

Yeah, Mccoy should shut up on the radio show he is forced to do. That would make for great radio. Some of you are too stupid! If you actually listened, you would know how much he cares. He discussed how bad he felt about the offsides he committed. He talked about how disappointed he is to this day. But no, all you idiots want to do is criticize him. You call the guy soft when he’s playing with a shoulder that he can barely use. I get your frustration with the team, but he is the wrong guy to direct it at. Did he have a great game? No. No player can be great every game. Not even JJ Watt plays great every game. But this constant criticism of one of our best players is ridiculous.

If players are fighting at practice, that needs to be stopped. You can’t do it in the game, so why do it in practice? We just played a game with 16 penalties, many of the nature of not being disciplined. Passion isn’t the problem with this team. The problem is poor execution and lack of discipline. You don’t execute well when you are in a rage all the time. At least most players don’t.

He’s kinda right. If we are doing the same BS pushing matches in practice that got us like 4 penalties last week, then those players need to be put in their place. Don’t take your anger out on pushing someone after the play. Take it out on the QB, with a sack on the next play. Use that anger to focus on beating your opponent between the whistles, not after the play.

enh. chippy practices don’t make you a more effective football team. intense practices may. i don’t agree with all of GMC’s reasoning but he is right on with this. this team is football stupid and just committed 16 penalties – they’re not getting better by bringing the undisciplined play to the practice field. tough guys lose football games every week to disciplined guys

I don’t think anyone is saying McCoy does not care. It is his approach. Since when is it not the coach’s duty to fix the approach of the practice? No Gerold, you want to take all that energy, that anger and that fire you have, and channel it right into your opponents face as you “smash mouth” them on your way to crush their QB. Just “chill” man, just “chill”. With a smile…What this team really needs to do is get into a room and study film. Day and night, until they have watched every play Atlanta has ran this year. Over and over again. Then go to the field and run those plays, over and over again. Brilliant? A word of advice Gerold. Leaders lead, they don’t go around constantly reminding everyone that they are the leader.
