A Lovie Smith wish came true yesterday

A Lovie Smith wish came true yesterday

Lovie Smith finally got one thing he long yearned for yesterday.

It came in the form of 30-year-old journeyman cornerback Mike Jenkins making his first Buccaneers start.

It was ugly. Bucs fans were treated to a Jenkins staple: him gesturing and celebrating when he doesn’t perform. This was evident on Ted Ginn’s first touchdown catch yesterday in the drubbing by the Panthers. Jenkins slips, and then loses Ginn who caught the pass in the end zone. On Ginn’s second TD, Jenkins put on a don’t-do-this coverage clinic. (Here’s the video.) Even FOX analyst and Bucs icon Ronde Barber, who has echoed Lovie Smith’s bizarre love of Jenkins, was sickened by that play.

Joe has been scolded heartily by fans for repeating — for more than a year — that Lovie had an unhealthy obsession with Jenkins. Many fans thought Joe was exaggerating, that Lovie didn’t really want to start Jenkins.

Well, Jenkins got that start over Alterraun Verner yesterday.

It was ugly.

Alan Dell of the Bradenton Herald, in a feature on Jenkins, noted Lovie was going to start him over Johnthan Banks, even if Banks was healthy.

Joe really doesn’t know what else to say. Jenkins was not a starting NFL cornerback when he arrived in Tampa, and he’s not one now, returning from offseason surgery.

    As much as I dont want to change coaches again this is the kind of stuff I just cannot understand. This along with Ryan Delaire are just the kind of decisions that are unacceptable and cause teams to be bad year after year.

  2. Ray Rice Says:

    Is Leonard Johnson still available? How about Myron Lewis or EJ Biggers? I take back all the $hit I said about you guys. Or maybe they can play a LB on a WR. At least the LB will bump the WR at the line.

  3. unbelievable Says:

    Did Lovie state he would start Jenkins over Banks if healthy? He should be canned just for spouting that kind of stupidity!

    I really don’t want to do the coaching carousel again, but we’re not seeing any improvement. Although I can’t put yesterday’s loss on Lovie nearly as much as the other games. Defense was in a tough spot from the 5 JW turnovers. However, the results and reasons were the same: we beat ourselves.

  4. bucrightoff Says:

    Did we have the single best CB in the league on our team when Lovie got here? We did, didn’t we? And now we have Mike Jenkins playing CB instead. Moves like that give credence to the notion Lovie simply wanting a retirement contract and is actually trying to get fired ASAP.

  5. DallasBuc Says:

    When a head coach’s talent evaluation and decision making are 99.9% wrong after 2 off seasons and 21 months of employment can you still argue that he is professionally competent?

  6. The Buc Realist Says:

    Jenkins off the WR by 15 yards is a good thing, because if he gets any closer its a Pass Interference!!!!!

    and the same for Jennings!!! those two are the PI-Brothers!!!!!

    I hope Verner and Banks do the team a favor and fake a injury so Lovie can have his wish the rest of the year, and then the “real” fans will have their wish as soon as this putrid season ends!!! Fire Lovie!!!

  7. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    Adding on to bucrightoff’s comment, all you morons that were in favor of us getting rid of Revis, where are you now? It cannot be overstated how terrible of a decision it was to get rid of one of the best CB’s of all freaking time!!!!!!! And look who we’ve replaced him with. Look at what Revis has done the last two years. That debate has been settled.

  8. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @TheBucRealist,

    I’ve been pretty quiet lately, mainly because I didn’t want to say what I’m about to say. You’ve been right the entire time about Lovie. I was wrong. I’m going to go throw up now.

  9. mac Says:

    I agree with Hawaiian… Lovie Smith sucks!!!

    😉

  10. BigMacAttack Says:

    Cut your losses now and say goodbye to Lovie. He’s in complete denial and doesn’t have the right demeanor for today’s NFL. I’d let Frazier and Koetter finish out the Season. As long as Lovie is in charge I don’t see it improving. Yesterday was about 10 steps backward, and not just with Jameis and Evans. But how bout them Gators?

  11. crazy Says:

    These are the problems that come from a HC making both personnel and coordinator decisions. Put that authority back where it belongs and most of these guys wouldn’t be on the roster or on the field.

  12. bucrightoff Says:

    No one who was “right” about Lovie is happy to be right. All I (and others) ever wanted to see from Lovie was some change, some growth from his time in Chicago. So far he’s the exact same coach, but is lacking a few perfect fit, elite players for his defense and the best return man in league history. He’s not just gonna fall into those players again, and he hasn’t shown he’s a good enough coach to simply outcoach other teams.

    We’ve pretty much looked like the worst coached team in the league for almost all of the 20 weeks of regular season coaching we’ve seen. The only way Lovie is going to win games is by having Jameis develop into a top starter….but what does Lovie Smith have to do with that? Any coach can be decent with a top end QB. Lovie just isn’t a good enough football coach period. We would at least look competent if he were. But we’re not.

  13. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

    If this team comes out and lays another egg against Jacksonville….another blowout loss at home

    Then Lovie should be fired on Monday before the bye week. This is just unacceptable

  14. Ray Rice Says:

    @Hawaiian

    I take it back even further. Where are all the dumb MF’s that wanted Talib gone? We easily could have had a beast a$$ secondary. But nope! Cry baby MF’s.

  15. nate123455789 Says:

    You guys don’t realize this but coaches and owners want this team to suck it to justify playing games in other places and maybe moving the team to London… this team has been terrible for a long time and will continue to be that way. We will never have a winning season just accept it and become a lightning fan..

  16. ATrain Says:

    Jenkins what about the other side of the ball.. Both of our CB’s are horrible.. Verner is definitely better than these two clowns..

    But Lovie is the leader of the circus he LOVES the Clowns.. McClown and all the rest of the Bears who have been let go/////

  17. BucTheWorld Says:

    @Hawaiian Buc

    I still don’t think letting Revis go was a bad idea, however it’s up to the coach and the GM to get the right people in here to perform. I am content with verner and banks, the problem is the coach thinks his vision is 20/20 but he is partially blind and can’t see sh*t!!Stuff like this pisses me off so imagine how the players feel on the team watching someone one worse than them start just because the coach likes the other player better. Lovie preaches competition but he doesn’t really mean it. I believe we are about to see Raheem football all over again.

  18. FortMyersDave Says:

    Lovie has a third stringer starting; what was that definition of insanity again?????

  19. Anthony Says:

    Im not sure Joe is a bucs fan…. perhaps only uses the site to let all his negativity out… that! or Joe never takes of his blinders

  20. Buccfan37 Says:

    You said we should Trade the Farm – Move up and draft Trent Richardson. You went as far to say – the dude was gonna be better than AP..smh. And anybody that felt different was a fool -lol

    Same thing Johnny Manziel, etc , etc

    Lol – Yet time after time – after all the sh!t talk- your the one coming back saying my bad – I was wrong.

    C’mon Bruh

    Nuff said!

  23. The Buc Realist Says:

    @hawaiian buc

    No need to say anything, Anyone that comes here week in and out and does not change their names I have respect for. We are all right and wrong here!!! What we have is a big mess my friend!!!

    But I did give Lovie kudos for actually blitzing a couple times yesterday, instead of hanging his defense out to dry..

    what I will be looking to see, is if the coaches turn Jameis into captain safety and captain checkdown. I think that would be the wrong move. In fact they need Keotter to imploy his 4-vert offense instead of his bunched up Jags running offense. At this point let Jameis throw 4 Int and 2/3Tds for 350 plus yards in the air!!! and give Jameis full control of audibles. It is bad now and this will not help currently. But could pay off dividends in the future.

  24. Sean Says:

    Hawaian buc,

    Best corner back in football last year may have gotten us an extra win if he was here….you don’t pay him 16 million to be on a terrible team unless you have to…the bucs could get out from under it and they did…it was a smart business decision

  25. Buc1987 Says:

    Hawaiian Buc …..ha ha ha ha regurgitating?

  26. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    U was one of the Biggest Lovie supporters last year – U defended the dude tooth and nail. When a few of wanted the dude outta here. Where’s your Lovie needs at least 3yrs to implement his system speech now?

  27. The Buc Realist Says:

    I really don’t think that Revis and Lovie could coexist in the same building. Revis would trash Lovie in every after game interview like it was a comedy roast!!!!!

  28. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Sure Jenkins was bad……Johnson was benched…..LVD isn’t the same…..We missed sacks…..

    You can pound the defense all day lon g about yesterday’s loss…..but it was the 5 turnovers and the kicking game that lost it for us.

  29. DB55 Says:

    On the bright side McCoy had his best game of the year with 4 tackles and a sack. He even made a tackle in the 4th qrt. Missed the sack on the next play but beggars can’t be choosers.

  30. flmike Says:

    OT:::
    Dolphins just fired Philbin

  31. DB55 Says:

    Lovie is next

  32. Bucsfanman Says:

    I’m scratching my head! I mean, what is going on here?!
    Even with Jenkins getting toasted, no defense can overcome 5 turnovers.
    Realist- I disagree with letting Jameis hurl the football. That’s one of our problems; he’s not ready. Doug was running the football very effectively and should’ve gotten the rock even more. Protect the rookie QB by running the ball and controlling the tempo. Throwing picks doesn’t make him a better player AND we will lose games as a result.
    If Lovie plans on sticking around, he needs to stop gifting positions and protect Winston.

  33. Ray Rice Says:

    @TampabayBucsfan

    100% accurate. I’ve been and will continue to be a big supporter of Jameis. But he is the majority one at fault for yesterday. Hate to say it but it’s true. I do give Lovie credit for doing what I begged for him to which was blitz. The blitz got there only to be shook by Cam. Bad angles taken on those blitzes.

  34. Ray Rice Says:

    @DB55

    After having his best game did he go out for ice cream?

  35. This Guy Right Here Says:

    …The Tampa Bay Chicago Bears. Good job Lovie!

    “On the bright side McCoy had his best game of the year with 4 tackles and a sack. He even made a tackle in the 4th qrt.”

    LOL he made that tackle in the 4th and I said oh dayum there is in the 4th. He gets up smiling as if he can’t believe it himself. Too funny.

  37. DB55 Says:

    Ray

    He went to his boutique and had tea n crumpets. He getting ready for the move to London.

  38. Greg Says:

    Much like the unhealthy love Joe has for Winston. Our team was ruined so the Glaziers can move it to England. (See Major League) The knew more than half of Tampa would HATE Winston from the start for on and off field reasons that all could have been avoided by drafting a superior QB in Mariota.

  39. CC Says:

    Jenkins is just another brilliant personnel move in long list. Great talent evaluation going on over at 1 Buc!
    Go Bucs!

  40. DB55 Says:

    Then he missed the sack on the next play. Someone should tell him that he gets paid to make sacks on 3rd down but whatever who really cares.

  41. DB55 Says:

    Marpet showed again yesterday. Throwing tacklers around like garbage bags. The kid just hits whoever is around him. I was impressed by the improved run blocking the oline provided. Although DSmith messed up on a few pass play he was really solid on run plays.

    That and the reduction in penalties really stood out to be as positives. And dougie Martin of course. Hell vjax had a solid day too.

    I just wonder why tf Koetter decided to challenge Norman? That leaves me puzzled. I never like Koetter anyway. I’m a mike sully guy myself.

  42. Bucco Brice Says:

    Yeah, if Miami can fire their coach this early then why not Lovie? Don’t give me this “doesn’t do any good to fire now” crap. This team can’t be any worse. Let Koetter and Frazier finish it out…”simple as that”…

  43. Ray Rice Says:

    @BUC1987

    That MF did get up smiling didn’t he. LMFAO!

  44. Ray Rice Says:

    @DB55

    “Tea and crumpets.” LMFAO! At least we all know his etiquette is on point.

  45. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    LUVMYBUCS ,

    First of all, I’m man enough to admit when I’m wrong. I would be a terrible GM. I’m a fan, and I always keep that in perspective. However, you saying I’m always wrong is completely false. I’ve been right a few times too. I think it’s pretty much the same for everyone. I didn’t want to get rid of Talib, Revis, or Bennett. Threw a lot of fits about them along the way. I was hollering for V-Jax long before he was even a free agent. I said to stay the hell away from Claiborne. I’ll man up to every single mistake I’ve made. I haven’t seen you do the same. Am I to assume that you are always right?

  46. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    I wouldn’t shed a tear if they fired Lovie if we lose to Jax. That being said, it’s never going to happen. He’s barely into his second year with a 5 year contract. We’ve never fired a coach mid season. Doesn’t matter if it’s the right or wrong decision, it’s not going to happen, which is why you won’t see me write “fire Lovie” on any of my posts. I have lost pretty much all confidence in Lovie and I don’t think it’s going to work, but the Glazers are going to give him a chance to get this thing fixed. I wouldn’t be shocked if he comes back next year if we win 4 or 5 games. I know nobody, including myself, wants to hear that, but it’s much more realistic than him getting fired after 5 games. I don’t like it, you don’t like it, but it is what it is. Accept it.

  47. Buc1987 Says:

    Great headline Joe. Perhaps later in the season you could re-use it and just say :

    Season ticket holders feel “burned and exposed.”

  48. Buc1987 Says:

    Ray Rice…lol yes he did. I don’t miss a trick my man.

  49. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    I’ve never master the:
    • Method of Loci
    • Major System
    • PAO System

    Though my memory skills are decent – You’ll never hear me say I remember every single thing I see posted on this board. I only scan through articles that interest me.
    so that would be impossible.

    An of course I’ve been wrong plenty of times – I have no shame in that – I’ve reposted those inaccuracies several times. I went as far recently -an sprung for a $5 Buzzard (My version of crow) W/ whiskey- after making the statement about our defense. I felt it should be a Top-10 unit -boy was I wrong.

    But in the same breathe, I’m not calling another grown man out his name just to flex. I don’t roll like that in person or on this blog.

    I’ve chopped-it Up with Kats from all walks of life – and I’ve broke bread with the best & worst of them – so I know that kind of sh!t – don’t fly on the blacktop – Because you’ll be battle tested real quick.

    Outside all of that, your a gifted writer. Not many can spin their opinions like U.
    But that keyboard warrior sh!t is for the birds bruh. U better than that

  50. Clw JB Says:

    Philbin is gone…now its time for the Lovie watch…what a total joke….another home game, another excited section 219 row AA for all of about 4 minutes…its 10-0 by then and we all know it’s over already….as I stated in an earlier post, Richard Williamson (RIP), Ray Perkins and Leeman Bennett were all better than Lovie Stinking Smith, we are the joke of the league again and next week, after the Jags kick our ass, maybe the Glazers will do something….

  51. Pick6 Says:

    lovie should have ceded his authority over personnel after 1 season of doing nothing but sitting on the couch and scouting yielded the awful shopping list that was our free agency haul and released players who continue to prove they are better on other teams in order to hire them.

  52. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Any thoughts on who should be the next coach?

  53. Buc1987 Says:

    Luv and Hawaiian Buc you guys need to shake hands and make up.

  54. Buc1987 Says:

    LUV…I’m already at the point that it won’t matter who they hire. When they win they win. The next guy will probably suck too. Perhaps one day the Glazer kids might get lucky

  55. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Buc1987

    Can’t wait to see how it all plays out bruh

  56. Another J Says:

    EJ Biggers was a better cornerback than Mike Jenkins!

  57. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @LUV,

    I think you have me mistaken with someone else. I’m no keyboard warrior. I’ve called people out before and I’ve been called out. I probably have crossed the line a few times, but I don’t think too many (I’ve never once been “scolded” by Joe). I never take anything personal, because it’s the freaking internet. Hopefully people don’t take anything I say personal. There isn’t a person on this site I wouldn’t want to hang out with, because we are all passionate Bucs fans. I have a really good friend who is a Bucs fan that spouts stupidity about the team every single day (and he’s a helluva lot bigger than me). I call him on it every time, because that’s the way I am. I’m not challenging anyone to a fight, but I think we are all men and can handle a little back and forth. I’ve said stupid things in the past, as have most people. If I get called out for it, good. But I will absolutely call out others for it as well.

  58. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Hawaiian Buc

    Its all good bruh – Hopefully when I’m you neck of the woods – (I’ve got family in Laie) When can throw something on the grill, or dig a pit (however U Q) – And have a good time.

  59. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    *Hopefully when I’m in your neck of the woods

  60. LUVMYBUCS Says:

  61. mike10 Says:

    Joe ……LUV would REALLY like an edit button.

  63. Ray Rice Says:
