“Lovie Smith Has A Lot To Do With That”

September 9th, 2015
lovie and jameis

A changed Jameis?

Joe’s always interested in the national perception of the Buccaneers, and Joe’s heard a common theme this week.

Sensible media types genuinely seem stunned that Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, has acted like a professional quarterback all year long, and many credit his new head coach.

“I think Lovie Smith has a lot to do with that,” CBS Sports analyst, SiriusXM NFL Radio host former Jets coach and personnel man Pat Kirwan said yesterday.

Of course, national types remain fixated on Jameis’ off the field issues from his college days. Some lurk in the bushes waiting for Jameis to steal another sip of soda and then declare him unfit for humanity the NFL.

But Jameis has been a model rookie, even capitulating to orders from his locker room mates.

Crediting Lovie for Jameis’ behavior is an intriguing take. Joe’s not going to discount the influence of a head coach on his prized No. 1 overall pick. But Joe’s also not going to take anything away from the way Jameis has prepared around the clock for opening day.

Is it? I have been of the opinion that Lovie Smith is likely a big reason why Jameis has been a model rookie.

Calling the animosity amigos! But what could Pat Kirwan know compared to posters on a blog. In fact, given that the rest of the league has respect for Lovie why would we ever doubt any of our posters.

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve read..Lovie has NEVER developed a single player. He is the WORST coach the NFL has ever seen.

  3. tickrdr Says:

I have been one of the biggest doubters about JW3’s on field performance, however by all accounts, he has been a model citizen, an excellent teammate, and his work ethic has been exemplary. Kudos to him!

trying to remain positive here but…how can he be super intelligent and do the stupid things he did in college? contradiction going on…

  5. Ernest T. Bass Says:

You have to be an idiot not to know that Lovie isn’t a Fist Bumper! Look at that look on Lovie’s face! Lovie is no Fist Bumper Shameis!

  6. Kevin V. Says:

Intelligence is not wisdom. Wisdom takes time. 🙂

  7. pick6 Says:

on the one hand, we would be right to worry for Jameis’ professionalism and future prospects had he come into that 2009/10 Raheem Morris locker room or in a dysfunctional universe like the ones washington or the jets can’t seem to escape.

on the other hand, no coach can get a player to walk a straight line unless that player is interested in doing so for himself. lovie could not keep mike williams interested in being a great football player and teammate, and that’s no more his fault than jameis being interested in being a great football player and teammate is his doing.

somebody committed to keeping you on the path is important, but it’s irrelevant without some internal drive to do so yourself

  8. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @B.B.

how can he be super intelligent and do the stupid things he did in college?

I was all over that question during the MM JW draft debate. I questioned that so thoroughly that I thought 87 might look up my address and strangle me. LOL

There is actually a simply answer..Immaturity. Now add this to the mix. Imagine you’ve been told how great you are since middle school…backed up by a decade of folks looking the other way. You are lead to believe you can walk on water. Hard for a teenager to deal with. In many ways it would have been more of a surprise if he DIDN’T eff up like that. The only surprise is that he grew so Fameis that he could no longer get away with it. If he had been an OL projected as a late round draft pick we would not have heard anything.

Mind you this is coming from a poster that FSU and Fameis lovers loathed during the draft debate. I was largely for MM. However 87 wrote it off to immaturity…and so far I give 87 credit for being right and I was wrong.

  9. Horice Says:

I guess no one “ever in the history of America” has ever done consecutive stupid things in college.. Either the critics have never graced a college campus for more than a month, or your the worlds biggest lying hypocrite!

  10. pick6 Says:

@bucco brice, speaking from my own experience, there is no predictable relationship between intelligence and making good choices. intelligence relates to aptitude at intellectual tasks. choices can come down to values, psychology, belief in consequences, or simply boredom. highly intelligent people who are under-stimulated are particularly prone to making bad choices and have the capacity to get into deeper sorts of trouble while rationalizing or compartmentalizing behaviour.

  11. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Pick6

That is going to be the best point made on this thread. Indeed this is not the Rah locker room nor even the Gruden locker room. This is another reason why I LOVE this team. Character in the locker room. The Lovie is sure a LUCKY guy eh? It’s clear he has NOTHING to with molding the locker room character! *snark font off*

  12. tdtb2015 Says:

“But Joe’s also not going to take anything away from the way Jameis has prepared around the clock for opening day.”

Time to put into action his knowledge. If he is really about winning we will see more TDs than INT. Hopefully we will not see any Pick 6!

His mind should be ready. But will he keep his EGO in check? He now is well aware how fast the d-line, LBs and DBs are in the NFL. We are about to find out how prepare he really is.

I would love to see him be super cautious in the first 5 games and help create wins

  13. tmaxcon Says:

    StPete

no one has ever said lovie was a bad guy or not a positive influence on young men. Hell I’ll even go as far as he is not a bad defensive coach if it was say 2000 to 2006 but with rules changes and the current state of the game it has passed his out dated philosophies bye. Again, I could careless if he is a nice guy or is a noble peace prize winner. his job is to shut up and win football games. Lovie needs to stop with the bs excuses and the On the verge crap and win his first home game… If bucs were credited with wins based on nice guys this team would compete each year for super bowls but instead they compete for the basement and 1st overall draft picks.

  14. tmaxcon Says:

jameis is a fine young man learning from past indiscretions I’d prefer to give jameis and his parents the credit for the outstanding job off the field he has done. i am sure the positive influence of vjax, lovie and ice cream man has not hurt either.

  15. Bucco Brice Says:

hope to hear J.Smith, D.Smith and Evans pratice today, Joe???..very important

  16. tdtb2015 Says:

Is nice to have nice people around Jameis on the field, family members or otherwise. But it always comes down to his choices in life. We all have made mistakes but it is our choice to make better ones in the future as much as possible. He has done a great job off the field so far. I hope he continues as more challenges will come his way…

  17. Buc1987 Says:

Winston said he was done with acting like a fool off the field right after he got suspended for yelling in the student union. That was almost 1 year ago. So he stopped all the crap long before he even became a Buc. Pretty sure Lovie had nothing to do with it and it’s just another case of the national media making up something that’s not there. It’s not their fault though, no one pays attention to our team anyways so they have to make up stuff like this to talk about.

Jameis grew up on his own.

  18. OneLove Says:

All you haters(The SMALL 3) out there are hilarious. It seems that Lovie NEVER gets any credit and ALL of the blame. Well I got news for you(AND IT AINT FOX!!!!)…. Lovie Smith is going to rebuild this team AND make us relevant again WITH OR WITHOUT YOU!!!!

HE AINT GOING NO WHERE BABY!!!!!

“It’s as simple as that” – Lovie Smith aka “I’m gonna be your DADDY FOR A LONG TIME!! Who’s your Daddy!!??”

  19. Kalind Says:

This is horse poop. And it ticks me off. They’re making up a fake cure for a fake affliction. What is this crap? Jameis is a good guy, and he’s doing his job. This false narrative is doing nothing but making me wanna punch pat kirwan.

  20. Buc1987 Says:

OneLove…you keep telling us Lovie is going nowhere.

Will you come back in here if and when he gets fired and admit that you were wrong?

I’ll tell ya one thing I hope you’re right, because if you are then that means our Bucs are headed in the right direction.

  21. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Buc1987

Any direction will be the “right direction” If the team finally starts to improve! (with or without Lovie)

  22. tmaxcon Says:

would they really be talking about Lovie this way if he had lived up to expectations and won some football games last year. No they would not but lovie took a bad team and made it worse so now they have to prop him up anyway they can. it sure would be nice if he won as many games as the first year head coaches last year. these same idiots were calling tampa a playoff team and one idiot went as far as calling them super bowl contenders. how did that work out… 0-8 at home 1 win against a Pittsburgh team that clearly did not take the bucs serious and well the other win speaks for itself.

  23. The original "Kevin" Says:

Anyone ever go on the leagues website? No coverage on Winston. Daily coverage on Mariotta. And I would bet my weeks wages that had the bucs taken Mariotta it would be the other way around. Takes me back to the article joe wrote about the Glaziers being irrelevant in nfl circles. It trickles down from the top. Every year you see the refs calling bogus crap on our team that costs us the games. Thats why I am not getting overly excited. Its not 100%fixed but the officials are ovviously told to sway cerrain games in certain directions in attempt to increase the odds of one of the two teams playings odds of winning. If it were not for fantasy football I think the integrity of the game would have made me give up on watching it. I hope one day it changes but highly doubt it. Its to much of a business. The only way this team is going to win is by dominating and not giving the league a chance to take away wins.

  24. 813bucboi Says:

be glad folks…game day is around the corner…

  25. Dave Says:

    Buc1987

There is such an undertone of animosity with you. You seem to want love to fail so you can be right. I don’t get that.
You did it with Raheem and Schiano as well. Can’t remember if you were calling for Chucky’s head or not.
Regardless , this is a rebuilding process. Year 2 of it had not even started yet.

The glaziers, and everyone else like you who want love to fail, would be complete idiots to get another new coach and OC if this year doesn’t go as good as done expect. JW needs stability. The organization needs it.
Love and Licht should be given a 4 year window. More than reasonable.

I am completely of the belief that they will win 7-9 games … All depends on the OLine and QB pressure. Two things that will be adressed even more next year.

This notion of last to 1st is very unrealistic. In this division it could happen but I doubt it.

Anyway, the points the fan base needs to settle down and let year 2 play out and give the new regime a little time.

  26. The Buc Realist Says:

What stability???? the roster has had 70% turnover, Lovie is on his 3rd Offensive Coordinator and 2nd Defensive Coordinator, and we have not even snapped the football for the second season!!!!!!

  27. 813bucboi Says:

@dave..you hit it on the head.. the city, organization and jameis needs stability…if we press the restart button after this season, we will be in the running for a top 3 pick again..i know some so called fans want bosa but I don’t want any pick within the top 10…if we’re picking in the top 10,5,3 of the draft we will not have improved not one bit…we don’t need high draft picks we need the players on our roster to develope and coaches on the staff to be held accountable for what their teaching players…if the oline doesn’t improve it might be time to say good bye to the person coaching them instead of letting the head coach go…we will see..GO BUCS!!!

  28. Jeagan1999 Says:

I was one of the ones who was…worried….about Jameis’s past behavior before the draft. But I believe in giving credit where it is due. Winston has proven himself (so far) to be studious, hard working, and dedicated to becoming not just a good football player, but also a good leader…which means leading by example and NOT doing the kind of stupid stuff that gets high profile athletes into hot water. Well done Jameis! Now let’s hope he advances as quickly reading defenses, and making good decisions on the field. My fear is that a rookie QB and a subpar offensive line are a recipe for many turnovers and errors.

  29. OneLove Says:

    @87

Let’s get REAL here. Firing Lovie after 2 seasons would be the DUMBEST thing our organization could do. It would set us back even more than we already are!! You cant turn DOGSH!T into GOLD overnight people!!

“It’s as simple as that” – Lovie Smith aka “Mr. Clean” aka “The quilted fixer picker uppperrr! LOOOVVIIIEEE!!”

  30. Joe Cool Says:

We have better running backs than they do and our defense is better. Week 1 is ours. Oh…also our QB is hella lot better than that bum MM.

  31. 813bucboi Says:

relax realist…like you said we haven’t even snapped the ball for year 2 yet…the stability that myself and dave are referring to is the teams system and coaching staff…our first offensive coor. was unable to coach a down due to an illness and he was replaced by someone who never held that position before…lovie or hardy is doing the play calling with Frazier still on the staff coaching the same system so the defensive coor. position has no turn over..same coaches same system…lovie did the same thing every new hire coach does when they get the job…get the players he wants to run his system…schiano did the same thing by releasing/trading players like blount and Bennett…if we give lovie, his staff and system a chance we will be contenders again…people love to point to his offensive situation at Chicago..people say he never built an oilne but I find that hilarious…rex grossman was known for holding on to the ball too long..same with jay cutler…they hold the ball too long which would result into a sack or turnover…lovie and his defense would then have to go back out on the field a take the ball away…got to give the man more than 1 year and 1 draft to fix things…GO BUCS!!!

  32. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Another call for the Lovie Confidence Poll……before the game…..after the game it will be skewed depending on the outcome….

How ’bout it Joe…..this is a good time.

You did it with Raheem and Schiano as well. Can’t remember if you were calling for Chucky’s head or not.”

    WRONG!

You’ve got the wrong guy. I was one of the biggest defenders of Schiano, right up until the end of his demise. Hawaiian Buc and I used to fight for days over Schiano in here. He hated him more than anyone that comes into this comment board

No need to come after to me just because I’m asking OneLove a question.

I’m the last fan in here that wants to have a coaching turnover every TWO years. The team will never get anywhere like that! However it was just a question no need to pounce on me for that. I want Lovie to succeed. Just like everyone in here. Even The Buc Realist wants Lovie to succeed…he just doesn’t see it happening. DallasBuc too.

@OneLove I am being REAL. What if Lovie duplicates last seasons record? I don’t see it happening as I see 5 wins on the board for us and Lovie stays if the D looks to be improving. If he wins less and the D looks like garbage. I think he’s toast after this season.

My hope is for 10-6, 8-8ish. That’s my HOPE though and we all know what hope has gotten us Buc fans in the past. So 5-11 is what I think, I HOPE, I’m wrong!

  34. OneLove Says:

    @87

Come on bro… You and I both know that we are NOT going 2-14 this year!!! I’ll make you a deal. If we go 2-14 again(or worse), I’ll pull out my WANG and put it in tmaxcon’s mouth! AGAIN! That sound good??

“It’s as simple as that” – Lovie Smith aka “The quilted fixer picker upper!! LOOOVIEEE!”

  35. Couch Fan Says:

No amount of stability will matter if you got the wrong guy in charge. Do any of you really believe Lovie did a good job coaching last year? It’s not like we can blame all the loses on having no talent. There is talent here but horrific coaching last year is a big part of the blame. I wouldn’t fire anyone after 1 year but If Lovie doesnt show much improvement in his coaching ability, he should be fired after this season cuz he wasnt very good. Nice guy or not.

  36. Buc1987 Says:

OneLove…my prediction is 5-11. No need to bring your wang or tmaxcon into it.

  37. Buc1987 Says:

Yes Couch and I know you’re not a fan of getting rid of coaches every 2 years either. The team will never get anywhere like that, BUT we do need to see progress from last seasons debacle of a team. Anything less than 5 wins and a crappy out of place looking defense, then Lovie is TOAST!

I don’t like changing coaches every TWO years either, but reality is reality.

  38. DoNUTS Says:

I was a big supporter of drafting MM over JW primarily due to these off the field issues, I must now admit that Mr. Winston has exceeded my off season expectations this year. I am hopeful that he will continue on this path. He seems like a good kid that just made some poor choices at Free Shoes U. I look forward to Sunday and hope the Bucs beat the Titans.

87- I am right there too….hopeful for 8-8 but in reality our OL/DL line issues may only lead us to 5 wins.

  39. tmaxcon Says:

    OneLove

you sure like to talk about wangs… maybe you should be watching ice skating or gymnastics instead of football…

  40. tmaxcon Says:

Couch Fan is dead on above….

I drank the lovie kool aid when he was hired and thought it was a good hire. After listening to all the BS about hisyear in the basement crap, I bought into that he had made some changes and understood the areas he needed to improve on. Then the season started and the same ole lovie came out and bombed. He blew up the oline without a plan and the way he threw Arroyo under the bus was criminal… I never root for the bucs to lose however, I have seen enough of Lovie and his clown possee of coaches to realize it will only get worse and he did NOTHING to change my mind this offseason. Hiring Koetter was a nice move but not allowing him to select his own staff and forcing the QB coach on him which is a lovie guy not a Koetter guy was all I needed to see to confirm he is a control freak with an out dated philosophy…

  41. Yungry Says:

Although Winston wasn’t my #1 choice he has displayed mature behavior. He even visited local hospitals and lifted their spirits. Go Bucs!

  42. Buc1987 Says:

The Bucs are going to win this Sunday however to start the season off on a good note. We’ll have to wait and see if we can handle the Saints the week after that. If they get by the Saints with a W, then I’ll climb aboard the Love Train for a little while. A 2 game wining streak… it’s a miracle.

  43. Tampa Tony Says:

Lovie is a expert at losing as a Bucs coach and will teach Winston all about it. Then gmc will teach him how to accept it

  44. Ben the GA Buc Says:

Tampa Tony … why are you even here?

  45. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @bucboi

know some so called fans want bosa

I am one of those so called fans who desperatey want Joey Bosa!! Kid has a motor and we all agree we haven’t had a great DE since Simeon.

Perhaps though you’ll cut me some slack when I tell you that no, I do not want to lose enough games to earn the right to select him.

My fantasy goes like this…we keep MG8 this year for insurance…in the off season he’ll be very valuable because a team will get him for an entire off season and have one year of a cheap $675,000 contract to give him a test run.

We take our first round pick, package it with MG8, and perhaps one other asset..player or lower round draft pick and move up to get Joey!!!

If OSU rolls this year and Urban is loaded and Cardale plays lights out like he did in the championship Cardale is the top pick. If we could squeeze just another player or two ahead of Bosa, maybe another QB, then we should have a realistic shot at moving up with our #1 and MG8 and another modest player or draft pick.

  46. Pickgrin Says:

The culture and vibe of the locker room that Lovie has create can do nothing but help Jameis in his so-far successful quest to stop doing/saying foolish things. But pretty much all the credit goes to Winston – for stepping up and being a man. For putting aside childish things and focusing 100% on becoming the best QB that he can be – playing a man’s game at the young age of 21.

Winston has not exceeded my expectations – nor Lovies or Koetters – because we all expect a LOT from him. (as it SHOULD be regarding the #1 overall pick).
Jameis has met those high expectations in every way to this point.

Many seem to still have only the foggiest of notions of what we really have here. Of how fortunate the Bucs are to finally have a true franchise QB with this kid’s talent, knowledge, leadership, moxie and “difference maker” abilities.

But ALL will know soon enough. Jameis might not light the NFL world on fire this year – but within the next 2-5 years, he is going to be one of the best – if not THE best QB in the whole league.

Enjoy the ride Buccaneers fans. Even the animosity amigos will be forced to admit sometime within the next couple of years that perhaps Lovie is not the bumbling baffoon they swear he is.

  47. DoNUTS Says:

    Lets not get Cray-Cray:

“but within the next 2-5 years, he is going to be one of the best – if not THE best QB in the whole league.”

I doubt it….he has potential to be very good (top 10) but with Luck, Rodgers and Brady still playing….lets be realistic on the best QB.

  48. 813bucboi Says:

@stpetebucfan…I hear you..bosa is a great talent but I think our priority needs to be protecting Winston and running the ball…first round regardless of the pick we have to go oline…take dallas for example…they spent a few years building their oline and last year they made a huge leap and not only got to the playoffs but won a playoff game and imo should’ve beaten green bay…how did they do it? by running the ball and protecting their qb…they had an ok pass rush but nothing spectacular…this offseason they spent some draft picks and free agent signees for pass rush which is something I believe lovie understands and is trying to replicate…last time we gave up a first round pick that pick turned out to be Sheldon Richardson…I understand your logic but I would only trade a first round pick for a proven superstar that can get us over the hump…at this point bosa is still unproven..he could end up being the next shea mcclellin and not jj watt…but I hear you and enjoy your comments..GO BUCS!!!

  49. Pickgrin Says:

DoNuts – Brady, Manning and Brees will all be retired in 2-3 years. Rodgers, Luck and perhaps Mariota will be Winston’s competition for best QB in the league by then. It depends on a lot of factors obviously – and there’s really no definitive way to say THIS guy is the best QB in the league. You could make a case right now for at least 3 QBs Brady, Manning and Rodgers as “the best” with Brees and Luck running just behind them.

Point is – Winston will very likely be in that conversation in a few years so he would be at least top 5 in that case.

It may not happen – but I would be surprised if Winston falls short of that.

  50. DB55 Says:

IMHO, the turning point for most QBs occurs about the 18th to 20th game, if you look back over their careers. That is “when the lights go on” for many. It
seems you also are wanting to give JW3 this whole year to improve, and demonstrate his greatness, regardless of how this year goes for him. Suppose his first year performance is poor, and even worse than Glennon or EJ Manuel? Should he still be given the chance to prove his worth? We all know the answer is “of course” because he has that magical “it” that only a few can see. Some, because of their pedigree, are never given that consideration.

I have never seen anyone hate on a coach as bad as you…and the funny thing is, you’ve been doing it since Gruden. You are never happy with a coach.

You make ridiculous comments, like this one, and think anyone takes you seriously other than the other hating idiots?

  54. DB55 Says:

  55. LargoBuc Says:

Why the hell cant they just give credit to Jameis for staying on track. Oh yeah, cause that would mean they were WRONG! Now you dont hear a thing about Jameis. Its either overkill if he messes up or nothing when he keeps clean. Im sure they’re praying that Jameis bombs week one so he dosent out shine their golden boy Mariota!
As far as off the field, its not like a coach has a world of influence. Especially from a guy like Lovie who understands these are grown men so he will not be holfing their hand all off season. Now in the locker room, then yes, Lovie is great. But Jameis has done a good job avoiding trouble and making good judgement. Thats all him. Just like if he gets in trouble. Its all him.
