Greg Schiano Talks Bucs

Former Bucs commander Greg Schiano offers his two cents on his former team.

Former Bucs commander Greg Schiano offers his two cents on his former team.

Through 17 games under Lovie Smith, it is easy to argue the previous Bucs administration under former commander Greg Schiano had more success.

Under Lovie, the Bucs not only won the Chase for Jameis, but Lovie’s defense is allowing a full touchdown (six points) more per game than Schiano’s defense.

And Lovie can’t point to distractions like the MRSA or his franchise quarterback going mental as reasons for the team’s derailment.

In an interesting twist, in this BSPN panel discussion, Schiano was asked to weigh in on the issues of the Bucs and whether fans should take to the streets in rage or lean back with a cold adult beverage and relax.

    I don’t think I have ever seen someone swallow a smile than Coach Schiano did in that video!!!!

    And he was dead on (again)!!!!!

  2. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

    Schiano should’ve definitely gotten 1 more season.

  3. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Erik with Clean Athletics

    Maybe, But the rockstar surely did not!!! Coach Schiano did the ultimate sacrifice when he took down the rockstar!!! He will always be a hero in my book!!!

  4. Clodhopper Says:

    He’s right on. Patience with Winston, but this D is more of the same and its BS.
    At least Winston has Koetter. That’s a plus. This D is hopeless. It will never ever be able to fight its way out a wet paper sack as long as Lovie is around.

    I miss you Greg. I’m sorry for every single bad word I spoke and typed about you. 🙁

  5. mike Says:

    Remember how he couldn’t use GMC properly and GMC was going to start looking like Sapp once Lovie came in? And Winslow, Bowers and Goldston were going to do some big things once they were free from Greg. Schiano deserved better… he smelled out freeman from the start and mrsa was a serious blow that couldn’t be helped. There was just no overcoming the terrible decisions from the rockstar.

  6. FLBoyInDallas Says:

    I’m beginning to think that when Love said real football starts in November, he meant November 2017.

  7. FLBoyInDallas Says:

    ^”Lovie”, not “Love”

  8. ShameisTheFarmer Says:

    Gotta give it to Schiano, he’s pretty much a class act. Could’ve really been nasty but sat back and just told the truth.

  9. Tampa Tony Says:

    Lovie makes me miss Schiano

  10. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    Just wait on it.

    Morning Nos-Bos

    Good to see you back in the fold!!!!!

  12. DallasBuc Says:

    Joe- “…easy to argue…”
    Sorry pal, it is not debatable by any measure or perspective. Time for the Joes to start acknowledging the rank incompetence of one Lovie Smith.

  13. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    Just because Lovie is terrible doesn’t mean Schiano wasn’t too. Schiano absu

  14. Tom Edrington Says:

    Too many folks here think Koetter is really good.

    That didn’t show last Sunday.

    If he was that good, he would be somewhere besides this lame Lovie staff.

  15. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    (My phone is going crazy). Schiano absolutely deserved to be fired. Let’s stop comparing crap to crap, and trying to determine which is crappier. They both suck, and we deserve better.

  16. Bucco Brice Says:

    HOW BAD WOULD LOVIE BE WITH MRSA AND FREEMAN TO DEAL WITH? MUCH WORSE…”simpls as that”..

  17. bucrightoff Says:

    Schiano’s profile keeps rising as Lovie does worse. Shows he took a bad team farther than an 11 year NFL coach. That’ll help his future job prospects.

  18. dreamin of a win Says:

    @ShameisTheFarmer

    everyone has a story to tell, what if someone was nasty and came out with the stories about schiano? you could see he was classless by the way schiano yelled at referees who you depend on for a call here and there. lovie is incompetent just like schiano was and the only constant since the bucs won the superbowl are the Glazer boys.

    lol lovie sat there and proudly talked about the second draft (a dump of players not good enough to make the squad they were on) and fans ate it up like pathetic morons. I was a lovie fan just like I was a schiano fan until I started seeing the losing way. I hated schiano but lovie is officially worse because atleast schiano attempted to adjust his defense to his talent. lovie hasn’t defended a slant pass since he lost the superbowl and you gotta get beat 42-14 to say you’ll get it corrected.

    for every time I defended lovie smith I apologize to all buc fans…im tired of living a prehistoric football life in tampa, im not wasting my time on another losing season, we wont win 2 games with lovie now calling the plays, it was bad enough he was coming up with the game plan

  19. DallasBuc Says:

    Hawaiian- you are right about that. We do deserve better. I honestly think the Glazers thought they were doing the best thing for the organization and the fans when they hired Incompetent Lovie Smith. However, at this point it is time to recognize the gross miscalculation and start putting together a new strategy for the end of the Lovie Smith era in 16 weeks or less.
    We deserve better, that’s for sure.

  20. mjc Says:

    ** Schiano held the players accountable and probably a weaker roster.

    ** Lovie said Gosder played well. If well means committing 4 penalties and giving up 2 sacks, then I don’t know what bad is.

    ** Lovie is a joke

  21. Greg Schiano Says:

    Yes…and I was much better on Mike & Mike this morning! I am okay with being fired early…despite the fact I did not spend the entire winter in my basement plotting how to ruin a NFL franchise!!

    What I am angry about is that I was fired and the Big Poodle is still on the radio!

    All I here from Tampa is Lovie is the best…blah, blah, blah! The Big Poodle has to go and T-Kraz should replace him!! Thats all I want. Unfortunately, me and Tebow both have winning records our last year in the NFL and we are out the door….Shoot…Tebow even won a playoff game. That is far more than Lovie will ever do with the Bucs!

  22. Buccfan37 Says:

    The Bucs scraped the bottom of the barrel and out came Lovie.

  23. Destinjohnny Says:

    We would have been a hard nosed playoff team this year with Greg..
    I want a coach who has a salty relationship with his lazy players.

    The differences between his practices and Lovies were has night and day as night and day.
    Dude was a savage man

    The good news for the players is we have a coach who they love and the practices are easy

  24. kaput Says:

    The scary part is that Lovie might get the axe, Koetter takes a walks as well and then Jameis is on OC number two in year two.

    Scary.

  25. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Kaput

    No the really scary part is that a new regime comes in and decides #3 is not all that and trades him away ala the San Diego Chargers and Brees. It worked for the Chargers because of River’s talent…think we’ll ever find a truly Brees/Rivers caliber QB.

    The next guy in will have NO allegiance to #3. He will not be an FSU fan. He will look at what is really happening on the field. #3 may yet be a good QB. But if we bring in another coach it’s no slam dunk that #3 will be a great Bucs QB.

    People like Chucky are already off the Fameis bandwagon.

  26. JMN Says:

    “The scary part is that Lovie might get the axe, Koetter takes a walks as well and then Jameis is on OC number two in year two.”

    The Bucs are now in company of the Browns, Raiders and Jets. Dark days here in Tampa with no chance of sunshine anytime soon. This team would have to a complete 180 and after watching Sundays a miracle would be needed for that to happen.

  27. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Spare me the we would be anything with Schiano. He was a horrible coach.
    The fact that Lovie is worse does mean Schiano was good.

    He was another “defensive guru” who wouldn’t understand offense if it hit him in the backside. Another defensive coward who inexplicably pulled MG8 out of the hurry up offense in Seattle when we could have whipped the eventual SB champs in their own house.

    Lovie is the worst coach since Perkins…that doesn’t make Schiano worth anything. I would take my chances against an 80 year old in a 100 yard dash.
    That doesn’t make me a good or even decent sprinter.

  28. DallasBuc Says:

    StPete- at least you are starting to understand just how incompetent Lovie Smith is. It’s a start.

  29. DallasBuc Says:

    I disagree that Schiano was a terrible HC. He made a few big mistakes in style on and off the football field but he was seeing the error in his ways and growing as a rookie NFL HC. Remember that he was in charge the last time we enjoyed winning football and hope back in first half of 2012.

  30. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @DallasBuc,

    What are you talking about “growing as a rookie HC”? He went from 7-9 to 4-12 (and only after we lost the first 8). He was getting worse, and the players did not respect him. Players don’t have to like the coach, but they have to respect him. You cannot win otherwise. That’s not even debatable. He was horrible in literally every sense of the word. He was terrible x’s and o’s. terrible game management, terrible with making adjustments, terrible with adapting to the talent, and terrible in dealing with men. Is he better than Lovie? Who the hell cares?! But please, everyone, stop having revisionist history that he was even in the neighborhood of being a good coach.

  31. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

    @ St Pete

    The thing you’re not accounting for is Schiano was only in his second year as a NFL HC and was dealing with multiple (manufactured?) sh!t storms from different fronts. Honestly with all the crap he dealt with in year 2 (the bogus allegations of leaking Freeman’s medical records, the fabricated story of fixing the Team Captain voting, the MRSA outbreak, the franchise pretending QB going on ESPN after deservedly getting benched, the local media looking for any reason to drag the man through the mud, etc.) I’m actually very impressed that he kept the team playing hard and not totally imploding. I doubt there’s many experienced NFL HC’s that could have accomplished as much under those circumstances! I won’t argue that the guy needed to tweak some things (dealing with prima Donna players, using halftime to make adjustments instead of just p!ss breaks, and game management), but he had a lot of the skill set that the good HC’s have (he was pretty good overall at evaluating talent that fit his team, he was a disciplinarian..players might not like it but there’s a reason guys like Belicheat, Coughlin, Harbaugh have had success in the league…players need discipline). I have taken all sorts of sh!t on JBF for saying Schiano was a better HC than Lovie for the Bucs, but I will stand by my prediction…the Bucs will regret firing Schiano. Make no mistake once he is done taking the Glazers free money he will return to the coaching/coordinator ranks and learn from his past mistakes in Tampa. Thank the Tampa media for billboards and BS allegations, the Bucs had a guy who was capable of becoming a good HC and ran him out of town!

  32. Jeff Says:

    Bucs played with more fire for Shiano than they ever have for Lovie.

  33. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

    @ Hawaain

    Dude you and I will never see eye to eye on Schiano. I’m at least good knowing you’re finally coming to grips with what I told you last year…Schiano will end up being a better Bucs HC than Lovie…baby steps man 🙂

  34. Ernest T. Bass Says:

    Raheem had a 10-6, Schiano had a 7-9. Lovie will not even get close to their best Buc seasons! We won the Triple Crown! Dumbest Coach, GM and QB. Those who think Shameis will improve are fooling themselves! Shameis, who makes Horse sounds during a press conference!

  35. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

    Should have gotten one more year he had the defense in the game not in total disarray and he went through so much locker room crap and he is dealing with these athletes who feel they are entitled…so what he yelled at Mcoy or david to make them better…those 2 guys suck now since schiano left along with the rest of th eteam

  36. tickrdr Says:

    A question for all those who have had or are beginning to lose confidence in Lovie Smith ( for the record, I voted NO CONFIDENCE, and TRADE DOWN in every poll here) :

    If Lovie is so incompetent, how do you all reconcile his choice of JW# as the #1 overall pick? Hasn’t he shown poor judgment in practically every other player evaluation?

    Reposted from yesterday: (Please ignore)

    Some of Winston’s issues such as staring down receivers, making only “one read”, footwork and mechanics (chronic ankle instability), and elongated delivery may get better with time, more experience and coaching. The biggest concern for me for JW3 was his LACK of ACCURACY. Rewatch the game, and see passes like his throw for a completion to ASJ, which was deflected five yards off its flight path to luckily end up in ASJ’s hands. Others were bounced in there etc. Too early to tell, but I believe you play as you practice. The issues regarding picks and low completion percentage from TC and the preseason seem to presage his performance for the first game. In fact, the whole team in preseason looked alarmingly like the 2014 team in preseason. As I have asked previously, which single player, anyone, let alone their whole unit; has played better in 2014 or 2015 under Lovie et al, than under Schiano in 2013???

    tickrdr

  39. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

    Was right there with you tickrdr…though I did vote “little confidence” in Lovie…what can I say I’m an optimist 🙂

    I was part of the trade down advocates, but even though I don’t think Winston will live up to the FSU hype I’m not giving up on the kid after one regular season game. Then again I still think Glennon (on a good team) can be a good NFL starting QB…he’s shown some good (and bad) ) things on this dumpster fire of a team, so it’s tough to really pass judgement on any Bucs QB at this point

  40. tickrdr Says:

    @SPBF:

    The “hurry up” offense game in 2013 was against the 49ers, and not Seattle.

  41. DallasBuc Says:

    Hawaiian- by record and by play on the field the second season was worse than his first. My point was that he was humbled by how his second season spiraled out of control and could see that he had a plan to fix going forward. Of course we will never know if it would have worked but what we do know is that he managed to win 4 games with Mike Glennon and his defense played better than anything we have seen Incompetent Lovie Smith trot out there.
    Schiano is not coming back and it is moot to debate his merits except to point out in contrast to the sht show of head coaching we are forced to watch now. Cautionary tale about being careful what you wish for.
    As you said earlier, we deserve better

  42. tickrdr Says:

    @DallasBuc:
    And Schiano’s team faced the league’s toughest schedule that year, and Glennon played five games against the TOP FOUR defenses that year (Sea,NO,Car,49ers).
    The games late in the year were mostly against those playoff teams. I do not believe the team quit on Schiano.

    tickrdr

  43. Buc1987 Says:

    tickrdr…many such as me think JW was not Lovie’s call to make. That came from the Glazers. As far as the team looking the same in preseason as they did in last years preseason. That’s what I said during this years preseason. I tried to warn peeps in here it was an indicator of a long bad season.

  44. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @DallasBuc,

    Let me tell you something about coaches like Schiano and Lovie. They are stubborn. They don’t learn, they don’t change. They honestly believe what they are doing is right, and everyone else is wrong. They are the same people in that regard. Schiano would have never gotten us better. I say that with 100% certainty.

  45. Jon Says:

    Schiano will never have a chance to go to a Super Bowl like Lovie because his rigid/arrogant behavior rendered him radioactive and unhireable by NFL owners.
    So now he can gap-tooth grin (while the camera’s on) on ESPN.

    People sure have short memories around here. Being a poor man’s Belichick, coming out of Mediocreville, NJ, and expecting the world to genuflect, and just being a micromanaging psycho brought a ton of unwelcome attention to our franchise.

    You can surely lose in a less dickish fashion.

  46. Jon Says:

    The only litmus test that really matters for a coach is if they are under-performing or doing justice to the talent they have?
    Be honest — this is about what we deserve, as frustrating as it is.

    The larger issue is how frequently we hit the reset button on regimes and the poor caliber of coaches who are willing to come here.

  47. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

    I personally have a friend who played for both belichek and saban and anotehr that has worked for jim harbaugh….the player stated he loved playing for the coaches and he also said what a friggin jackass those 2 coaches could be but he is glad he did that…….my buddy coached with harbaugh at stanford and he cannot stand that guy as a collegue and did not go with him to the 49ers…the point is head football coaches tend to be narcisitic ego maniacs but theya re successful which i am sure it is with may successful bsuinessmen and women…..the bucs organization let schiano go to early in my opinion and now this is what we have and it may be a very long time before this organization gets ready to compete for a title

  48. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Dusthty Rhothdes,

    Those are good points, but don’t apply to Schiano. Those guys may not like Saban, Bellicheat, and Harbaugh, but you can damn sure guarantee they respected them. Schiano didn’t get respect from his players, nor did he earn it. That’s a huge difference that so many don’t seem to comprehend.

  49. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

    Falcons defense looks good

  50. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @tickdr

    Agree with your post..the repost. It is spot on.

    But I was talking about Seattle not SF. I do not recall the SF game so perhaps it happened twice. I googled stories on the Seattle game and while nobody reported why it happened it’s clear that it was because Schiano went conservative defensive coach in the 2nd half. I could swear I even remember the soundbite after the game when the media asked Schiano why he stopped using the hurry up after so much success and his response was…”because we hadn’t practiced it.”

    But here is the game report. I do not know if you’re an MGMer…I’m not that far on #8’s bandwagon but I do believe he could have been an adequate QB with the right defense, good FG kicker and a competent OC calling the plays.

    Glennon hit 10 of his first 11 passes, including touchdown passes of 12 yards to Tim Wright and 20 yards to Tiquan Underwood as the Bucs dominated the first half. Glennon’s first two TD passes capped the Bucs’ two longest touchdown drives of the season.

    Tampa Bay scored on four of its first six drives and gained 274 total yards. The Bucs gained just 76 yards on its final five drives and never ran a play in Seattle territory.

    “When you have a team down like that, you’ve got to choke them out,” Bucs cornerback Darrelle Revis said. “Because great teams come back. And they are a great team.”

    Regardless of what anybody wants to say about MG8 he has at least “flashed” some ability…should of won in N.O….did win in Pittsburgh and should’ve won in Seattle. That’s just three games that immediately come to mind.

    Oh and another tidbit from that Seattle game…

    Mike James ran for a career-best 158 yards for Tampa Bay

    Only to disappear! Has he ever been given enough carries to know how good or bad he truly is?

  51. Zoocomics Says:

    I don’t know why Schiano was so hated here… especially given the personnel he was given, both players and coaches… he wasn’t necessarily set up for success.

    We needed Schiano after Raheem. Schiano brought discipline back to this franchise. That’s right… toes on the line…biting the football, i.e. protecting the football, focusing on tackling… I felt we had some credibility when he tookover despite some of the college antics he pulled, i.e. attacking a team in victory formation, and yet you could make an argument that was his never say die personality. Let’s not forget we had I believe the best run defense in the NFL under Schiano in year one. Schiano didn’t have the best success, but I don’t recall games like Baltimore and the Falcons last year, and now this year’s opening day loss to the Titans…those losses for fans are just humiliating.

    So yeah, I kind of miss Schiano after this start from Lovie, but that’s old news, lets just hope he can turn the ship around for the sake of the fanbase.

  52. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

    Hawaain

    You’re painting with a very broad brush when you infer none of the players respected Schiano. Michael Bennett, maybe Revis, maybe a couple other guys who Schiano cut (that one dipsh!t WR who ended up going to the Saints…can’t think of his name now). I realize it’s not worth the time, but there were several JBF articles were players have props to Schiano (GMC…who became a pro bowler and hasn’t looked as good since, “the Hawk”, Davin Joseph, to name a few). Some players probably did hate the guy, they went from drinking buddy Rah to a guy who couldn’t have been more different in terms of approach. It was what they probably needed, but as other posters have pointed out its all a moot point now. I’m merely venting about the premature Greg Schiano firing/Lovie Smith hiring…hopefully the next coach is someone we can all agree is a keeper.

    @SPBF:
    Sorry to nitpick, but I believe this is the game you are talking about.

    ————————————————————————————
    Bucs unable to sustain drives on 49ers
    By going to a hurry-up attack, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers allowed the game to slow down for rookie quarterback Mike Glennon. Tampa Bay’s first five possessions against San Francisco went nowhere Sunday, with the Bucs limited to 30 total yards by the NFL’s No. 4 defense. But with the 49ers leading 17-0 late in the half, Glennon directed an 80-yard touchdown drive that used up only 78 seconds.

    Late in the third quarter, the Bucs went to hurry-up mode again and began a 92-yard march, capped by Glennon’s second scoring pass of the day. “We were going up-tempo and feeling good about how we were doing,’’ right tackle Demar Dotson said. “That’s where we had our best success, using the hurry-up offense. It was really working for us.’’
    ———————————————————————————
    Schiano’s comment after the game about not going back to the “hurry up” offense was something to the effect that they hadn’t practiced it or something. That single comment was one of the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.
    Nevertheless, I still think Schiano is a much better judge of talent, than any of the current Bucs regime, and his team played with more heart than Lovie’s has.

    tickRdr

    BTW, nice comment about Mike James. He didn’t disappear, he’s just in Lovie’s doghouse with Bobby Rainey; only Rainey sits closer to the door, so you can’t see Mike James.
