One benefit of Joe being in Minnesota for Saturday’s game was getting a chance to view the Bucs’ sidelines before and during the game. For example, Joe saw Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, do a Victor Cruz-like salsa dance a few minutes prior to kickoff.

Jameis was reacting to the music at TCF Bank stadium.

But there was more of interest.

When Jameis took the field, Joe watched the Bucs’ sidelines. Typically, the defense, following its first series, would have a solid handful of guys conferring with coaches and sitting on the bench. Not this time. Joe would say literally everyone on that sideline was lined up in toes-on-the-line fashion watching the offense.

That doesn’t happen if Mike Glennon under center.

“You better believe I wanted to see how Jameis was going to perform,” Alterraun Verner told Joe after the game. “You pick a quarterback No. 1 overall and it’s his first snap, I can’t speak for anyone else, but I couldn’t wait to see how Jameis and the offense would respond. They did a lot of good things out there, and I think Jameis did just fine for a rookie.”

Lavonte David felt like the defense was more on its feet and at attention in support of the offense in general, but David said he particularly wanted to see what kind of poise and command Jameis had.

“I thought he showed a lot of poise for his first time out,” David said. “A lot of poise. He took some hits and settled in after that, which is a good sign. He showed some of what he can do, too, against a good defense.”

Another thing Joe noticed was the lack of anyone protesting the presence of Jameis in the crowd, or in the party scene surrounding the stadium. Prior to the NFL Draft, Joe remembers so many folks ridiculously talking about the widespread protests and backlash that would follow Jameis. They haven’t materialized in any form.

As for perspective from inside the huddle, well, Joe will direct you to the words of Louis Murphy.

Jw was horrible and it’s funny to see all blame the online. Like mg had an o line last year!!! This guy was supposed to be the savior and he’s all talk. Nfl is gonna chew him up. Let him get ko’d so a real qb can come in.

Love and licht are morons pandering to the ratings and fans

  2. Rob Says:

Just Winston Joe, still not and never to be “America’s qb “. Stop saying it, it’s taking away your credibility

  3. Bob Digital Says:

There was a lot more backlash against the Bucs’ RED campaign than there’s ever gonna be with Jameis.

Also, Siege the Day is one of the dumbest, laziest marketing slogans that I can ever remember.

  4. jimmy53 Says:

loljw: it was one preseason game, and you know it. Troll elsewhere.

    Rob:

It is obvious that the “America’s QB” is done somewhat with tongue pressed to cheek.

What isn’t so obvious is why it bothers you so much. And if you think it hurts his credibility in any way, you need to grab a grip on reality.

  6. Joe Says:

@Rob – Sure sounds like it’s time for you to stop reading JoeBucsFan.com.

  7. Buclife Says:

Winston did ok for his first preseason he got better as the game went on he will be fine. I have not forgotten that he is a rookie and will make rookie mistakes he still has to get his timing down with receivers. Also I know that Dirk is running a basic offense in the preseason.

  8. OneLove Says:

    @Rob

I think its time for you to take my wang… and put it in YOUR MOUTH…

  9. BUC BOY Says:

How rude! OneLove should refrain from offering others love!

I have high hopes, but I believe you are a bit premature to think the protests of Porky would be high in Minnesota? Wait until he gets to RayJay!

It does not matter what the protests are, unless the entire team plays better Porky is not going to change the Buc’s in one season.

  10. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

I like the title America’s QB. per Joe’s many explanations it does makes sense.

Plus we can witness firsthand those whose panties are furiously tied in knots as they complain constantly about the title.

  11. Buccfan37 Says:

Winston played better than I actually expected he would in his first game. I think he will do fine adjusting to the pro game. MG wasn’t bad. That position seems capable depending on the O line coming together.

  12. LargoBuc Says:

Jameis actually graded out at +.01 on pff, same grade as Mariota. The offense was a little sloppy. Gilkey has no right to play like that. And shame on Lovie for him to still be on the roster.
As for the int, Evans fights for that ball had he not been held. But regardless, its still a risky throw. I dont know if he saw the safety but the safety sure knew what Jameis was going to do. Its not like Jameis had much time to look him off, but im not too worried. People that dont know about the Bucs like to compare Winston to Jsmarcus. But thats bull spit. Jameis is willing to work hard, unlike Jamacus. Jameis will keep his head and prepare even more heading into game two. I would like to see a little less experimenting and a little more of a gameplan against Cincy.

  13. Nick Says:

Came alive in the 2minute drill, which is everything that was advertised and the opposite of what we’ve had the last decade/forever.

  14. DB55 Says:

3 plays would have made a huge difference. If Vjax would have ran through the catch rather than diving that could have been an 80 yard TD. That would have changed things quite a bit. If either of Mike Evans (2) PI penalties would have been called it would have made a big difference.

Looking forward to see what adjustments Lovie makes for next weeks game.

  15. Jody Says:

All excuses aside. Does anyone believe that product on the field Saturday night can win a game this season? I dont. Lovie is washed up. This will be the hardest season to watch in the history of the franchise. Maybe not the creamsickle days I’m talk in modern football.

  16. DB55 Says:

Oh wait one more, if Sheppard could have held on to the Hail Mary pass that would have been 3 TDs for young Jameis.

    Coulda, shoulda, woulda.

  17. Arealbucsfan Says:

Yes Jameis did have a bad 1st game (pre season) and yes Mariota did do better. But if ur thinking we made the wrong pick already, its way to soon to tell. 8-8!

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The defense should have been talking to eachother after giving up huge yardage on the initial Minn drive.

I think Winston did OK….not bad…not great…..but keep in mind he has been hyped multiple times daily and the expectations were very high…..and, after all…it is the worst offense in the NFL (until it prooves it isn’t)

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    proves….

  20. Arealbucsfan Says:

And fir everyone that kept comparing him to Byron Leftwitch. Please, not even close

  21. Lol jw Says:

More excuses up in here than Hilary at a press conference . Jw looked like he wasn’t afraid of the game etc. but he sucked.

  22. Mike10 Says:

Why did his arm strength look so poor? Is it footwork, not being able to step up in the pocket?

  23. Mitch Says:

As a fan I dont believe we can use preseason game performances to predict a teams regular season success. The only value of preseason is that it allows the coaches to evaluate their roster; while, giving pseudo-game experience for new, developing, and/or previously injured players. Week One is when we start.

  24. Rrsrq Says:

One low intensity preseason game, c’mon man. Now if this continues through the third regular season game, then worry. Look how good Teddy B. looked with the game slowed down, he has had one season, one preseason game and had seen this Bucs defense before, unfortunately we have too

  25. Lol jw Says:

It may be preseason but him throwing like he’s got butter on his fingers was wicked ugly. There was a seafood sale in the paper. Just sayin

  26. scott fitzgerald Says:

Jeremiah Warren looked pretty good at center when they pulled gilkey. Even better than Josh Allen

  27. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Some of you people should seriously not be allowed to post. One preseason game and some of you are already claiming he’s terrible and we won’t win a game, lol. I didn’t like what I saw either, but it’s the first preseason game. Winston had some good moments and some bad moments, but it’s just the preseason. Some of you are too damn emotional. Had Winston played excellent you would be putting him in the Hall of Fame. He makes a couple bad throws and you idiots want Glennon, smdh. R-E-L-A-X! It’s freaking August people!!! Take your finger off the trigger and wait until the games count. We aren’t winning the Super Bowl this year, and we aren’t going 0-16.

  28. 813bucboi Says:

I agree with db55…if vjax doesn’t fall down he at least makes it a 1st &goal and had the refs called pi on the corner covering m.evans we would’ve been in good shape…jus relax folks..it preseason game #1 and some people are already throwing in the towel..lovie has this team headed in the right direction fast and we need to give him and the rookies time…im not saying give him a 3year ext. but at least let him finish this season..honestly I see the offense starting slow for the first half of the season and really turning it on in the second half jus like the defense did last year…many of our defeats came within the final 2 minutes of the first and second half..jameis showed he can run a 2minute drill effectively, something we didn’t have last year..pass rush is the biggest issue we have so far along with the depth behind our starting oline..relax people!!the days of us being under 500. are over…GO BUCS!!!

  29. Charlie7 Says:

If everyone had to post with their e-mail and real name all of these trolls and haters would go else where, just sayin’ Joe!!!!!!!!

  30. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

It’s easy to see whose panties are still bunched up from selecting Jameis.

    Keep up the crying, ladies.

  32. Lakeland Buc Says:

The Bucs made the right choice by drafting Jameis Winston. I have seen us waste 1st round picks in the past.We traded our 1979 1st round pick for washup Wally Chambers, We drafted Bo Jackson with the 1986 1st overall pick, after Bo told Hugh Culverhouse that he will not play for him. We traded our 1990 1st round pick for Chris Chandler to be our backup QB.We traded 2, 1st round picks for Keyshawn Johnson. We traded 2, 1st round picks and 2, 2nd round picks for Jon Gruden. We traded our 1st round pick and a 4th round pick for Darrelle Revis. That’s 8 1st round picks that we wasted.

  33. Kevin V. Says:

Just a comment on the VJAX incompletion. I believe the pass was thrown late. This time , the receiver was definitely NOT thrown open. Had the pass been thrown with more anticipation, the defender would not have gotten his hand on it I believe. Nothing more for VJAX to do. Hopefully, these things will sort themselves out with more reps.
