One Buc Palace Buzzing

John Clayton, “The Professor,” provides Bucs’ back-room feedback on Jameis.

So roughly two weeks of training camp are in the books. The next item on the calendar is the first Bucs preseason game tomorrow night in Minnesota.

Prime time.

And prime time is the right time for “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, as he makes his Tampa Bay and NFL debut. The eyes of the nation will be on young Jameis via the NFL Network broadcast.

As one can expect from having “America’s Quarterback,” nearly every day someone from BSPN or NFL Network has been at training camp practice (and Joe chortles at folks who say he writes too much about Jameis). “The Professor,” John Clayton, was prowling One Buc Palace yesterday. When guys like him and Jaws and Mike Mayock and Jeff Darlington and Charley Casserly show up, they get big-time access.

(You’d have the run of the house, too, if like BSPN, you coughed up $1.9 billion annually to the NFL.)

So after talking to movers and shakers at One Buc Palace, Clayton gave Joe a few minutes. Naturally, Joe asked Clayton about the vibe behind closed doors with Bucs head honchos.

“Great feedback,” Clayton said. “Because, I think you can see how smart he is. I think you can see how hard he works at it. I mean, the attitude is right. He is all in on this whole process. I think that’s the good thing. People still misinterpret how individually smart he is. It’s almost like a photographic memory. So because of that, I think it bodes well. You know he has the throwing ability. I mean, sure, there are going to be growing pains and all of that. But I think it is off to a good start.”

Now comes game speed for Jameis. It’s one thing to mentally master the game of football. It’s quite another for Jameis to physically rise above Bucs quarterbacks past.

Let’s see how Jameis does in a game situation where he is no longer wearing an orange jersey, and the other team is allowed to rip his head off. Rhetorically, of course.

They need to have one of those big 3 second clocks in practice. Jameis won’t have that much time with this o-line….

  2. thunderchunkyPA Says:

Tom you are right. IF the O line makes improvement, IF Marpet and D Smith are the real deal, then Jameis will be awesome. But, I believe Dirk Koetter is the right man, for this job. He mad Ryan a mpro bowl QB with a terrible O line as well. At least we have a pro bowl, super bowl winning O lineman who can teach this young guys something.

  3. MAYNE ONE Says:

Lets get the first of many wins starting tomorrow on our way to 11 or more victories.v

  4. Tampa Tony Says:

Everyone keeps saying if Jameis, Marpet and Donovan are all the real deal…

When was the last time a teams first 3 picks were all good? Especially this franchise? I can see one being a really good player one a average player and one a bust. That’s just the law of averages when it comes to the draft.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The overselling continues…..let’s hope he lives up to expectations….the same goes for others…

  6. America's D-Bag Says:

None of this matters if they can’t run the ball. Give the kid a chance to succeed and he will/should. Anywho…”Chortles” sounds like a great name for a g@y bar.

    “One Buc Palace Buzzing”!!!!

I thought Coach Schiano cleaned up and got rid of those guys!!!! Or did that mysterious duffel bag that Winslow, Tjackson used to carry (allegedly) and held onto like it was their life showed up again!!!!!

  8. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I’m so afraid that Winston is going to get pummeled tomorrow night.

  9. Tom Edrington Says:

I am seeing too many “IFs” in most of these posts……

  10. Louis Friend Says:

Tom, agreed completely. These new pieces are still figuring things out. I’m going to enjoy watching this year to see improvement, not to expect a lot of wins. 2016 should hopefully be a where real impact gets made with these changes.

  11. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

    No “if’s” in this post

Jameis Winston IS a franchise quarterback

This Bucs team WILL start the season 3-0

  12. JA Says:

Rhetorically? How does one rip someone’s head off rhetorically? I believe “metaphorically” might be more apropos. Sorry, it just jumped out at me.

  13. Buccfan37 Says:

I’m anxious to see how the offense performs mostly.

  14. 813bucboi Says:

    @TampaTony

I can see one being a really good player one a average player and one a bust. That’s just the law of averages when it comes to the draft.

I certainly take your point about the law of averages. I suspect however that the data base of top three draft picks, is so small as to invite all kinds of skewed numbers.

Take the Bucs two best drafts…in 95 we haul in two Hall of Famers…that is so outside the law of averages for most teams drafts…not just two All Pros but two HOFer’s!!!

Then two years later we haul in Ronde and Warrick Dunn…two all pro caliber players

But my dad was a bookie and so I’m pretty accepting of the law of averages. I’m not hoping to get a couple of HOFer’s here, or necessarly two ALL Pros..
But if Fameis is just a “good” NFL QB not HOF..and one of the OL turn out to be Logan Mankins in his prime good…this will be a great draft.

Of course I believe in shooting for the stars. And so why discount all the incredible positives that have followed Fameis his entire athletic career. He has scoreboard! He’s a winner! Training camp seems to have EMPHASIZED that not diminished it. New OC…all the offensive weapons and the improving defense…the improvement in depth…and the fact that we’ll probably add a couple more pieces when the waiver wires start filling up.

The offense will shine, but I would like to see our D make Teddy B uncomfortable on his home turf!

  22. StRicKn Says:

Winston will lay the law tomorrow. Evans and ASJ Will be on the spotlight and the quest for a super bowl will begin. A long tough road that I look forward to watching. About damn time!
